Jim that would come from Barn Owls. They are great mousers so you want them around for sure. If you ever get time you might build a barn owl box and put it on the outskirts of your property. They dont hunt right under the box but in the general area. Great to have around!
It's not easy doing things outside of the norm! Yet, it's hard work and determination that always gets things done. And you guys definitely have those two qualities down. You both work hard, and you're both determined. I look forward to your eventual success...
A suggestion for your drain pipe over the entrance. Instead of letting the rain pool on the cobb, why not cut the pvc pipe in half and make it like a real rain gutter. That way the Cobb wouldn't get soaked and wash away over time.
I know y'all are so ready to move in. Me personally, I'd get the inside walls, and floor finished, before I'd even consider moving in. Living in a construction zone is not fun, and it's impossible to keep anything even remotely clean... it's just a thought. Stay safe, and stay warm friends! Love y'all ❣️ ❤️🌵☀️⛈️🌈☮️🐎
Isn't the strenth of a 2X4 along the other axis? I think they would be stronger if you put them on the edge verses laying them flat. They might sag over time?
Jim and Jess, you both look more relaxed, like the work you've done has taught you so much. You've 'matured' in your creativity & your off grid living experiences. Great to hear Jess say she wants to start moving items in. She feels comfortable with the whole construction process and I love seeing both of you happy. Lluvia on the other hand looks like she wants to be in charge, and be the Alpha of the family! I think maybe that's why she will go after Crew. She looks like she wants to be dominant, over him. Lots of energy too! Merry Christmas 🎄 to you all!
You were stressing so bad about that opening your hair fell out 😂😂 I was so excited to see this upload!! Y’all made my night!! After this I gotta get to work on my solar setup. Trying to configure the batteries, inverter and charge controller!
Add an inside wire mesh on each side of the 2" pipe to keep out debris. Second add a lime/mud-cobb/stone to the channeled out drainage area. Less debris to clog the pipe. Water falling from higher than three feet can be quite destructive. Options can be a rain barrel or flower pot collection system. At the very least, create a stone/rock arrest runoff area away from the dome. Or add a further gutter runoff with elbows, tee's, 90 and 2" pipe. Another option is for the water to fall into raised plant beds, or raised enclosed rock embankment.
Liking the chicken wire. Sandwich idea. now if you could scavanged some lifestock fence panels, the galvenized. use that instead of the 2 x 4 zip tie the chicken wire on the bottom place about a four inch layer of cobb on top then set another panel on top with another layer of chicken wire. Then use a trowel and a stabilized cobb on the outside, and a fine mix of smaller straw and sifted clay troweled on the ceiling. Those lifestock panels made some great tomato and cucumber trellis, and very sturdy- I zip tied them together- once the zip ties are covered and not exposed to sun they would last a very long time. They do have a plastic chicken wire - wouldn't rust.
Excited for your move. I agree with the person who suggested a paint stripper. You can find one that's not quite as toxic. How did the drainage work, if you had all that rain?
Team supreme! Looking good. Love the mud room. Back in the Midwest we called such entrances mud rooms or a breeze way. Place to kick off the dirt and to block the wind. Good location for coats, hats and boots.
Though the materials began as humble supplies, you turned the existing door into something quite nice. Don't short change the artistic appeal of that portal. The basic rectangular doors that the rest of us are stuck with feel like a sellout to corporate mass production. Your arched door will be missed because it is unique and special. Thanks for bringing me along on this adventure.
I had solid 4 panel doors in an old house we bought and did one with a stripper and heat gun. it took me a week. So the other seven I had dipped it was worth every penny. Around the glass if the glazing is cracking I would remove it and the glass then clean up in between and reglaze when done it's a option.
Nice progress. Have you ever thought of using striping compound to remove the paint. I did this many years ago and it worked great. It may save you many hours and is not as dusty.
I needed to see how this was done, I am thinking may be have the same shingles over it like the ones round the edge of the dome? Jessica does know her stuff. I am please to see Yuv is as intelligent as my dog I often send her to get my son. Thanks for the video.
Definitely looks like an owl pellet. You can soak it in hot water for a few minutes and pull it apart - you'll find all kinds of little rodent bones in there. :)
Oh that’s right! I have seen on Amazon that they actually sell little dry owl pellets for kids to dissect! Jim & Jess can actually have that experience for free! Lol
Something is off. Y'all seem not the same. Not happy. I hope things improve and you can get your joy and enthusiasm back. Prayers for you both for a Happy New year
Of course you have to do the implementation and installation. Consult with the Wise Women and elders from Cal Earth, all the challenges you face have been previously met and solved. Carry on green dream project. We love the dynamic duo.🎆❤🤗
Yep looks like it was from an owl! I remember dissecting one in grade school science class and then we put the skeleton of the shrew back together hahaha
intrance drain idea . my My grandparents house had a huge overhang i front of livingroom and didnt wanna look at an ugly drainpipe..so instead they mounted 3 galvanised chains from the gutter..also my thoughts, mayby your recuvar sorry for my spelling..is ab minor good idea⛈
Rain chains or cups are traditional in Japanese construction, it breaks the force of the rain, and some of them ring like wind-chimes as the rain comes down. But I believe they are trying to save all the water that they can collect, so I wouldn’t be surprised if those pipes will be connected to their water containers before too long. My initial thought was that the PVC was going to be drilled and screened, and then cobbled into the lowest point, but … choices made are probably for different reasons than I know.
You know having the inner door and the outer on make a sort os an airlock and keep the heat in or out depending on the season, your choice, just saying... .
My thought as well. If a predator animal were to find their way in the 1st door, a 2nd set of doors would help slow progress into the dome. Of course, moving stuff in through 2 sets of doors is going to be challenging as well.
Wasn't there a dessert igloo in star wars? That's what I think of when I hear or see the words dessert igloo, but your dessert igloo is nice too. Love this channel, nice work. When will this place be available on Airbnb???
I thought you’d cut the pipe in half or drill holes in top Hope yours works. Any of my non metal roofing is slow draining anyway . Hope that entryway doesn’t capture too much rain as well
I stained two doors like yours then I top coated with polyurethane. The urethane was so thin it seeped under the masking tape and hardened. It took years just to correct the goof-up. Not one of my best moments.
I really thought your shirt said "Blood Don" and I thought it was some weird play on the mob. If Jess wants to get outta the house without you she can come up here and I'll teach her some metalwork stuff! Or you. Or both. Either way. Come play with metal!
I hope you close off that top because you’ll have birds and snakes getting up there between both roofs! 👍👍🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🤘🏻🤘🏻 You guys should get a game camera set out.
Why not leave your original "makeshift" doors (and touch them up a bit) which are somewhat decorative and would provide (along with the "new" door) double protection from the elements?
You have given a new meaning to mud. Like to see you cobb the interior and the possible
thrill of modern day cave drawings. You are doing great.

It’s so nice seeing you both working on the dome again can’t wait to see the progression
Like finish carpentry only finish cobbing. How cool!
A suggestion for your drain pipe over the entrance. Instead of letting the rain pool on the cobb, why not cut the pvc pipe in half and make it like a real rain gutter. That way the Cobb wouldn't get soaked and wash away over time.
What about finishing the dome and the top of the entrance before more rain washes your work away? 😄
I know y'all are so ready to move in.
Me personally, I'd get the inside walls, and floor finished, before I'd even consider moving in.

That entry is going to be amazing when you open up the inner arch. So happy to see you getting closer to moving in!
Isn't the strenth of a 2X4 along the other axis? I think they would be stronger if you put them on the edge verses laying them flat. They might sag over time?
You guys should put a trail cam up if you haven’t already! Watching the footage is so much fun! Lol ❤🎉

GOOD MORNING FROM KISS.....The DESERT IGLOO is coming along...
Very cool.
Jess is very meticulous This is where such an attribute will be most important.
Keep up the great work!
Your doing a great job guys , looking good 👍

Seems like the roof coating would be a priority
I admire the effort you put into that door.
You need to have a cob party with some fellow cob builders to get some of the inside walls covered up.
Thank you for sharing.
Resident green team killen it.
your videos are getting better.
Excited for your move. I agree with the person who suggested a paint stripper. You can find one that's not quite as toxic. How did the drainage work, if you had all that rain?
Owl "pellets" are neat!
I love these two Jim can be so goofy!

Nice flock of White-faced Ibis flying over at 21:30 min. Probably headed to Whitewater Draw. Then followed by chilled out Eurasian Collared Doves.
I'll be so excited for you guys to finally be able to move into the dome. Bless you both❤️
The Dream Team. Stay Real, healthy and safe! Cheers!
As always awesome video stay warm and merry Christmas Rosa
Nice progress 👌

Great job the both of you! MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU TWO!
Wish I was there to help Jess with the door. I love doing things like that, but my hands not so strong as it use to be. Enjoy your build.🥰💕🙏

Hallway looking good!!!
Starting to feel like a home!

I'm curious, why isn't finishing plastering the outside of the dome your first priority?
Pellets r the word yea h for u all be blessed
I have an idea, but I don’t know if you wanna go that way, but you could’ve made arch with the bags to lay on there. What do you think Jim
thank you
Definitely looks like an owl pellet. You can soak it in hot water for a few minutes and pull it apart - you'll find all kinds of little rodent bones in there. :)
agree, looks like an owl pellet.
Yep. I remember dissecting owl pellets in the 6th grade...Fun times!
Oh that’s right! I have seen on Amazon that they actually sell little dry owl pellets for kids to dissect! Jim & Jess can actually have that experience for free! Lol
@@ourdesertwonderland my daughter and I have purchased a couple from Curious Nature. It's so much fun (if you're a weird treasure hunter ha ha ha ha)
@@shelleybelly66 that is awesome I will need to try and buy some, sounds like so much fun!!

Always look forward to watching you guys love Arizona was stationed at fort huachuca back in the days, are you and Jess from Wisconsin
looks like a nice owl house between the awning and hall entry way
2x4's on edge so they don't sag.
Yeah, Jess is fearless on heights.
Owl pellet. Good omen!
Jim you are the Boss .
Of what?
Of what ever he puts his energy in to.
😂
That Jess, she knows her poop! good job. thank you ALL stay safe
Looks great
You guys are so cute. OMG 🥰
What are you going to do with the metal dome frame?👀
Love it keep it up ❣️
Hooded twins, Lol, I don't think Jess liked that.❤❤❤❤
You could leave old door there and have 2 sets of doors to control the heat better on entry
The gloves appear to be applauding asking for an encore Merry Christmas
owl pellets. so cool stay warm
Yep looks like it was from an owl! I remember dissecting one in grade school science class and then we put the skeleton of the shrew back together hahaha
HOWdy G-D-P, ...
SCAT on the ROOF = RACCOON SCAT ...
Owl Pellets make sense ...
COOP

Anatolian shepherds need at least 2 hrs of activity or playtime a day. She's cute and healthy.
YES JESS WEAR A MASK!!!!!!!! ,
Inside walls please.. because I'm so curious how you're going to make those bags and cob look nice.
Are you going with just the one dome
1 at a time
Great projects and great progress
Did a really good job Jim
Did the rain pipes work as planned in that day of rainfall?
intrance drain idea . my My grandparents house had a huge overhang i front of livingroom
and didnt wanna look at an ugly drainpipe..so instead they mounted 3 galvanised chains from the gutter..also my thoughts, mayby your recuvar sorry for my spelling..is ab minor good idea⛈

Are the boards attached to the walls also.
are you guys going to do a screen door/storm door?
Hope you guys finish soon
Sure will be glad when you all plaster the inside 🤪
Wasn't there a dessert igloo in star wars? That's what I think of when I hear or see the words dessert igloo, but your dessert igloo is nice too. Love this channel, nice work. When will this place be available on Airbnb???
Jim, I think your scat was deposited on the ground by an animal and was carried up there by a Pack Rat on its way to build a nest.
You...been playing with her all morning.
me... that explains a lot haha.
What is your plan for heat? Wood burning stove?
I thought you’d cut the pipe in half or drill holes in top
Hope yours works. Any of my non metal roofing is slow draining anyway .
Hope that entryway doesn’t capture too much rain as well
That going to be a big mistake making a pond over the doors. It will bust. You don't want any thing holding water over your head
I stained two doors like yours then I top coated with polyurethane. The urethane was so thin it seeped under the masking tape and hardened. It took years just to correct the goof-up. Not one of my best moments.
Are you guys gonna go over your cobb on the dome with plaster or stucco to seal it safe?
I really thought your shirt said "Blood Don" and I thought it was some weird play on the mob. If Jess wants to get outta the house without you she can come up here and I'll teach her some metalwork stuff! Or you. Or both. Either way. Come play with metal!

Maybe sandwich a tin in chicken wire so it can hold tin to wood supports so tin won't blow away..
An Owl loogie
Why not leave your original "makeshift" doors (and touch them up a bit) which are somewhat decorative and would provide (along with the "new" door) double protection from the elements?
Gutter flashing to protect inside of the need of the hallway top!
owl pellet
Maybe to help keep hands warm
Wear rubber gloves first
Then cob gloves
Do y'all have ringtail cats? Coatimundi? Any one of them could climb and leave presents up high. LOL
Owl regurgitation is called a pellet.
can you use the pooh to burn on fire ?
Scientist pay good money for owl pellets!
what did ya build your house out of?.....owl regurgitation! hahaha
