The scissors in question completely revolutionized the perception of household scissors. In 1972, Fiskars was the first company to start mass production of left-handed ergonomic scissors. Left-handed scissors can be identified by their red color. In 1975, beveled blades were introduced and the cutting angle of the blades was optimized to be more efficient and durable. In 1980, the plastic of the handles became resistant to dishwashers, autoclaves, UV light, shocks and stress. In 1994, a new production method was developed to minimize the number of subsequent repairs. The model was the old All-metal tailor's scissors, when Fiskars designer Olof Bäckström designed a new model in the early 1960s. Bäckström emphasized the ergonomics of the handles and chose plastic as the material, which was just entering households. The scissors had to become black, red or green. However, during the manufacturing phase, the machine user decided to use up the orange color in the plastic machine, which was already used in the juicer produced by the company. The random color was surprisingly appealing, and a vote was held between orange and black. The votes of the 16-person jury were exactly 9-7 in favor of the orange.
I love how the orange scissors are iconic internationally. The orange colour was a coincidence. It was what the manufacturer happened to have in the machine when the prototypes were made.

That way you can easily take the tools out, without damaging the apron, and still wear the apron alone, if you choose. You could even make other props to fit in the pockets, and swap things in and out as you want, whenever you want.

I really appreciate this video 😊 One day I came home from shopping with a new apron. My mom was perplexed and unenthusiastic. She said no one wears aprons anymore, trying to make me feel like an idiot for wasting my money. I said, "maybe that's because they don't own one." 😂 I love my apron and don't get wet washing dishes anymore. Your apron is super cute and I love the cris cross straps 😍
My mom was the same way about aprons. But then she would complain about the stains on her clothes from cooking.🤦🏻♀️ I love and use my aprons regularly.
Aprons are wonderful! I have four that I've made and they always come out for washing dishes or baking. I'm so glad you're finding enjoyment from yours! 😊
I can walk a little, but can't stand up very long because of pain. So I use a wheel chair much of the time. I do all the dishes sitting in the wheelchair, which is a bit too low so I end up getting my shirt wet. I wear an apron all of the time while doing the dishes because it soaks up a lot of the water and my shirt doesn't get as wet that way/ I also sit while doing cooking prep. Because I have nerve damage in my hands I'm somewhat clumsy and messy. An apron really helps me keep my blouses cleaner. So yes, I wear aprons often, but like to take them off before I serve and eat dinner. I have several cute aprons. I usually use an apron for about a week before I have to throw it into the laundry.
I've often wandered about Bernadette's scissors. I think the reason for the tartan ribbon might be twofold. 1) It is easier to find them 2) padding for using against fingers. Bernadette is very lean and does not have a lot of padding. (NOT a criticism.)
It's funny you call the pin sharpener on the tomato a strawberry, since I always called it a pepper. This is probably because I grew up in the southwest, so pico de gallo was always in my household - hence the connotation!
@@presgutpela I know the phrase 'noli me tangere' from the Wyatt poem "Whoso list to hunt" written during the reign of henry the 8th. but that's a reference to Pliny the Elder, who lived ~23CE to 79CE. it also appears in the bible, when that gets translated from Greek to Latin, but i would argue the Pliny reference is older.
My husband can confirm that I said "oh wow," "clever girl," and " Morgan, this is amazing" numerous times during this video. The apron is magically whimsical. This was one of my favorite pieces that you have made. Good work. Side note: How's the garden looking?
A customizable apron is a really fun and useful project. Gotta love adding some fun to it. I love that you made such a fun apron given that it is on your SCA heraldic device. I would love to see you try other cute whimsical aprons you come across.
Your shop assistant at around 26 minutes is absolutely fascinated with your presentation, especially the handful of papers. I used to have a shop assistant too, and every aspect of my workroom was a source of endless fascination (and, when I wasn't around, amusement).
I'm a beginner in my sewing journey. I'm currently in the process of making an apron for myself. It's the first wearables thing that I am making for myself that is not just me mending or resizing some clothes. I'm really hoping to make my own clothes because the fashion world does not cater to my size, my shape, or my tastes. It's really encouraging to watch you make an apron and show how it can be done. I don't like the fit of the neck loop on an apron for me and I'm making mine with shoulder straps. I've always wondered how the ones that are crossed in the back work, so I'm delighted to get to see them in action, as it were. Thank you for uploading this video 😊
Look up one piece Japanese style aprons. The straps come out at a nice curve to the front and can either be permanently attached, or buttoned at the hips. I also recognize them as toddler dresses for over little bloomers.
Absolutely captivated by your hair in the intro, it looks so gorgeous!!! Like, the length! The bangs! The colours! The curls!!! Very goals for when I'm growing out my bob Edit: I stand by this, but damn is the whole video full of amazing hair looks!!
Aprons are the best! I have quite a few, too, and always have to stop myself getting/making more! This one is really good, the over-sized items just DOES it.
Definitely agree--more aprons! You look SO stinking cute!! And that base pattern just fits you SO WELL. I had a pinafore dress growing up that I called my Alice dress that was very very similar, just smaller and blue rather than red. It was my favorite dress for ages and I was heartbroken when I outgrew it. I think you've inspired me to explore that again (just maybe with fewer ruffles than the first one had). The only place where I think I would have differed from the audience survey is on the scissors: the ones I automatically think of are the all metal variety, but with black or gold handles on a silver body. To be fair, that's because my great-grandmother and several generations back were all tailors, and the shears just sort of got passed down along the way,. So the ones I think of also tend to be massive, and sometimes with odd cants to the blades. The orange ones are pretty iconic in their own right, though! My grandmother once suggested that instead of a tomato, the pincushion was meant to be a pepper, and the strawberry was just a newer pepper that hadn't rounded out yet, like some of the varieties we had in the garden. I was very little so I went along with it and it just sort of stuck. So I've thought of them that way pretty much ever since.
somehow i didn't understand that you were doing a barbie apron with toy-proportion items so i was somewhat confused for a good bit of this video, but i also enjoyed it so much. watching you make the items was so fun, and the apron is so cute!
I was definitely expecting something more appliqué-like that would make the whole thing machine washable, but it looks like making the props was pretty fun! I feel like you could add some pockets to the pockets, though, to actually stash your scissors and measuring tape. Maybe the next apron can be super practical like that green romper you made - the kind that's meant to get dirty and used up, with a reinforced pocket for the scissors, so they don't poke through.
Morgan, I AM becoming an elementary school teacher and this might be genius for my final exams - some of which I will be taking in sewing. Thank you so, so much!!!!😊
How cool is this. You look like you had so much fun making the tomato, scissors, and measuring tape! Love the attention to the stitching detail ❤ I am a fan of the Morgan Barbie look!
I was thinking of a gardening apron but I already have gardening cargo pants that work just fine unless I'm jumping on a shovel (in which case my phone on one side and my knife on the other side bang around and bruise my knees cause the pockets are a bit low)... however, an apron for bee-related stuff when I'm not suited up has grabbed me by the brain and telling me it gets to jump the to do queue so that next week during our next hive cleaning session, I don't have propolis and wax on my clothes...
We also mark our scissors so when we sew out in the world, our scissors are marked as ours. This is an excellent project. Love it!!!! Looks adorable on you!
The strawberry is filled with Sand. I was taught you use it to sharpen needles and pins by plunging the sharp into the strawberry multiple times to sharpen.
Back in the day - pins and needles weren't made of stainless steel - they rusted. The little strawberry was filled with emery; run the pin or needle several times through the strawberry and you "sanded" off the rust. Those tomato/strawberry pin cushions have been around for decades. I'm pushing 88 and I remember them from my childhood. Why the combination of a veggie and a fruit I have no idea.
Scientifically, they're both fruits; tomatoes were classified as vegetables for tax reasons (in the US) I forget when. 😉 As a kid I always wondered why it wasn't a cherry tomato attached to the big tomato, lol.
When my mom passed away, I got all of the aprons she had collected. There are so many different kinds. I am 67 so these are old aprons. They are beautiful. I have the apron I made in home economics in my freshman year of high school, 1969. Looks a lot like this apron but with pockets instead of them across the bottom. I still have it and use it, it has held up very well. My home economics teacher was very old and she had been teaching kids to sew with this same pattern for many years. I love this apron.
Also, the strawberry or pepper, however you look at it is actually used to sharpen your pins. In that little strawberry there is little gritty things inside that sharpen your pins just thought I would share that.
Okay, one - the apron is way too much fun and really cute. But to have you change your dress in every scene?!?! That was way too much fun. You should put a link to every dress construction video when the associated dress is worn. Love your videos and thank you
Probably becouse those projects take days of little time in between normal life stuff, so each step was made on a diferent day. And also considering that Morgan posts only once a month
I still have some of the aprons my grandma made me as a kid. I’m thinking of making some dresses to wear this summer, I should make an apron or two to go with them.
I finished making my first full from scratch dress a few weeks ago and have worn it twice, and gotten kid-related stains on it both times (I have a 1 and a 3 year old!). I definitely am feeling the need for an apron to wear with my super cute new me-made dress
I can tell you why the tomato showed up in sewing! Pincushions have been around since the Middle Ages at least, but according to the Victorians, placing a tomato on the mantle of a new home brought good luck and prosperity. If tomatoes were out of season, they’d improvise with a bundle of red cloth stuffed with sawdust! And the crafty women of the period thought it was also an excellent place to store their pins!
There’s an artisan who makes handmade ties (XOElle), and one of her long sellers is the tapemeasure tie, which of course comes in yellow. She built a custom silk screen for hers. I also love aprons and saw an amazing style on Instagram with a long set of ties that allow it to be tied loose on the side or looped around the waist and tied in the back. Of course I had to make one! 😂
As someone who's special interest is dollhouse miniatures let me tell you, the amount of sheer joy and inspiration I got from this video. I am reaching for my sketchbook as. I. Type. Thank you for sharing this wonderful idea and providing some whimsy to my Tuesday evening.
I have a collection of aprons. My favorite was a gift from my aunt and it’s is purple, with bearded irises on the trim. I wear it every time day. I have frilly vintage ones for making martinis, cow print ones for barbecuing, I have lots of kids aprons because being a mom is what I chose, I have ones for working in the garden. And lots of fun, pretty or for show aprons. They are all displayed on coat hooks in my kitchen. I love the idea of a sewing apron, a la Barbie style. I’m going to have to add one to the collection for my sewing room.
Absolutely cute. Cant get over this measuring tape. And all the possibilities to personalize it to the hobbyists craft. ❤ I do have some aprons of my mum and grandma. They have buttons and buttonholes too and are worn with crisscrossing back bands. But their buttons are sewn on the inside. This way the sometimes to long ends of the bands vanish to the inside of the apron.
My tape measures are light blue and purple. I've never owned a yellow one. I also would have thought metal scissors would have won because the orange handle Fiskars are better for crafting than sewing 🤷🏻♀️
Just noticed how much your hair has grown out. Im loving the hair ribbons. I was just thinking earlier today that i really want to try learning to sew again, and this reminded me that somewhere in my crafting stuff I had started making myself an apron froman old oversized jeans. It was the criss cross back that reminded me since that was the only style I found tolerable. Happily inspired now.
Your apron is not only a cloth, it is a masterpiece! You are not only a sewer, you are an artist. And the idea of putting three pockets, I find it original. It changes. I like that such aprons come back in fashion today. Me too, although I am a man, I like wearing such aprons.
I absolutely adore a good apron. It actually helps me to stay focused through the day. I have ADHD and wearing it helps my brain connect to the tasks at hand and therefore stay in 'work mode."
The hat pins work for the ball top style of sewing needles but for diversity: knitting needles. Single point knitting needles look like the flat top pins, and the smaller needles WILL poke through many types of fabrics. You could use the metal needles, or plastic/wood painted to look like metal. Just a thought. Great video!
I loved the apron!! I love using aprons when I cook, so I am very pleased with how this one turned out! also love to recognize the outfits you used from your past videos! so much fun to see that you actualy use the stuff you make!
the red dress you’re wearing while doing the scissors is my absolute favorite.! I would wear it every day.! 😍 I’m trying to find a way to sew one like that with this red and white print I have .. if you could, can you possibly do a tutorial on that dress please .? it’s absolutely amazing.!
your lack of standardized measurements in garment construction makes me really happy. I feel much less pressure when I don't see a million little numbers everywhere!
I love apron videos, and this one is so cool! I'm sewing a bunch of band patches on my dad's denim-ish kitchen apron, since he and I are both into heavy metal and thought it would look really cool if we made him a battle apron instead of a battle jacket or vest! After I finish, it will go back to hanging inside the pantry with my mom's rooster print apron. :)
Every shop needs an assistant. My Beloved watches auto and bike crafting RUclipsrs, and several have feline assistants, small kiddos, or both, involved in their crafting. So delightful to see some of those big machos have gentle moments with small creatures. I need more aprons in my life.
When I was teaching I actually had a teacher apron. it was a half apron I made from old jeans. I kept my dry erase markers, a remote for some technology, some candy, and had a pocket as a general catchall.I had people laugh and immediately guess I taught special education. I actually gave some to my secret snowflakes when I got them.
When I was a Head Start teacher for preschoolers I often wore aprons. I never knew when I might need a pocket for tissues, or pencils and crayons. the odd bit of playdough, a little toy car, Legos, etc.. Aprons also helped to keep stuff like finger paints, peanut butter, and boogers off of my clothes.
What a cute project! I really love the detail and finesse you put into even your "simpler" projects. Your hair is also looking so fabulous! If I shave mine off, will it grow back like that?? (kidding!)😆
I feel like another tool/ sewing object is the blue cookie bin. It is a metal tin that typically have sugar cookies in it that EVERYONE associates with sewing stuff: extra needles, clothing scraps, measuring tapes, pins, etc. Etc. But it is always the blue cookie tin.
I love that you used the DaVinci app, I use it often when making projects to give me a starting point! Also love when you were trying to remember the word for the stiff adhesive fabric, your cat was looking expectantly at you to say the word. 😀
Your Morgan Barbie apron came out very cute.😊 Speaking for some of us sewers can be difficult but you did well.Your vast experience in all forms of making and creating is awe inspiring.

The Morgan Barbie apron is whimsical perfection!
That is because Morgan is whimsically perfection🥰
Fabric tied onto the fabric scissor handles makes me think of bernadette banner's scissors with the bit of tartan tied on 💙
I've often wandered about Bernadette's scissors.
I think the reason for the tartan ribbon might be twofold.
1) It is easier to find them
2) padding for using against fingers. Bernadette is very lean and does not have a lot of padding. (NOT a criticism.)
In the shops In have worked in the fabric scrap is to denote the fabric scissors so they don't get trashed cutting paper.
It's funny you call the pin sharpener on the tomato a strawberry, since I always called it a pepper. This is probably because I grew up in the southwest, so pico de gallo was always in my household - hence the connotation!
As a person who loves clothing, history, and Morgan, and who also wears an apron every single day at her job, this video was made for me.
Also, this looks like a perfect blend of Barbie meets Miss Frizzle 🪄🚌
This is so freaking whimsical and adorable it makes my heart feel 10 sizes too big🥰
I am not a collector of hat pins, but a giant version of the tomato pincushion as the display for your collection of hat pins... That would be iconic.
Your "don't touch me" belt is awesome
Ooh I was wondering what that said!! Thanks!
Is it a dmatmoobil reference?
I love it so much! Where is it from?
@@presgutpela I know the phrase 'noli me tangere' from the Wyatt poem "Whoso list to hunt" written during the reign of henry the 8th. but that's a reference to Pliny the Elder, who lived ~23CE to 79CE. it also appears in the bible, when that gets translated from Greek to Latin, but i would argue the Pliny reference is older.
@@presgutpela I thought the same thing! I've read that fic so many times I've lost count, so when I saw her belt, I nearly screamed 😂
My husband can confirm that I said "oh wow," "clever girl," and " Morgan, this is amazing" numerous times during this video. The apron is magically whimsical. This was one of my favorite pieces that you have made. Good work. Side note: How's the garden looking?
❤️❤️❤️!
Sidenote reply: the snow has *almost* all finally melted in the garden, already have seedlings started inside 🌱
Your blue dress that you dyed with the plants and light is mesmerizing every time I see it! Super cool
I love a good apron made of sturdy duck cloth ! Ive two - one for dishes and nasty cleaning and one for baking and cooking. This outfit is so cute !
A customizable apron is a really fun and useful project. Gotta love adding some fun to it. I love that you made such a fun apron given that it is on your SCA heraldic device. I would love to see you try other cute whimsical aprons you come across.
Yay! I could also write a love letter to aprons.
Very goals for when I'm growing out my bob
Edit: I stand by this, but damn is the whole video full of amazing hair looks!!
This is so cute, its giving me Arriety/borrower vibes and its so amazing!
I love aprons!! I have 4 hanging in my kitchen, and a bunch more in my linen closet. An apron was the very first thing I made on Betty the Singer.
😂❤❤❤
Imma make a Post-menopausal Fluffy-Queen-of-the-Garden(ing)-apron!!😅
😂🤣👍
I was thinking of a gardening apron but I already have gardening cargo pants that work just fine unless I'm jumping on a shovel (in which case my phone on one side and my knife on the other side bang around and bruise my knees cause the pockets are a bit low)... however, an apron for bee-related stuff when I'm not suited up has grabbed me by the brain and telling me it gets to jump the to do queue so that next week during our next hive cleaning session, I don't have propolis and wax on my clothes...
The ability to customize this project makes me want to make my own for gardening!
We also mark our scissors so when we sew out in the world, our scissors are marked as ours. This is an excellent project. Love it!!!! Looks adorable on you!
Ive loved all of your haircuts, and today your hair is just SO stunning!
Thank you so much
Those scissors are genuinely impressive.
I love just how many red outfits Morgan rocks in this.
Aaah, now I get why you asked for our associations of the colours regarding scissors and measuring tapes.
The strawberry is filled with Sand. I was taught you use it to sharpen needles and pins by plunging the sharp into the strawberry multiple times to sharpen.
The little strawberry attached to the pincushion contains an abrasive to enable you to clean pins! 😊
I wish I’d known this earlier - it came off my tomato and I ended up throwing it away 😢
As a kid I always wondered why it wasn't a cherry tomato attached to the big tomato, lol.
@@jaded_gerManic Thanks for the info!
@jaded_gerManic I'm guessing that's like "Bees are Fish" in California now, for environmental protection reasons.
@@jaded_gerManic Oh fun! I thought that the "strawberry" was actually meant to be a chili pepper, but I prefer your explanation :D
@@jaded_gerManic oh my gosh a cherry tomato would be so cute!
A Q barbie would be interesting. This looks exciting
I’m just proud for the Q reference 😂 my Trekkie heart is happy 🖖🏻
I would so be tempted to paint the scissor handles pink. And make a pink tomato. And have a pink measuring tape. Because Barbie. ::giggle::
ADORABLE! I just watched the Barbie movie again today, how fitting 🤗🌟❤️✂️
I always thought it was a pepper rather than a strawberry. Very interesting.
Same!
I've heard people call it either. I don't think it really looks like either and usually say "strawberry like thing."
Also, the strawberry or pepper, however you look at it is actually used to sharpen your pins. In that little strawberry there is little gritty things inside that sharpen your pins just thought I would share that.
@@SoMagicalMichele
Yeah, honestly I was always a confused. As a kid I’d say strawberry 🍓 but would hear a response “it’s a pepper” so I was like 🤷🏼♀️
@@le1003ann I had heard that but never knew how to utilize it so it’s just decoration over here. Haha
I love that you rewear your favourite dresses, because they’re so cute and I love seeing them!
i would use corsage pins and embroidery, leather or yarn needles. Maybe even roller pins or those hairpin you got made for those halstatt hairstyles
Okay, one - the apron is way too much fun and really cute. But to have you change your dress in every scene?!?! That was way too much fun. You should put a link to every dress construction video when the associated dress is worn. Love your videos and thank you
Cute overload, amirite? Those dresses are all adorable!
Probably becouse those projects take days of little time in between normal life stuff, so each step was made on a diferent day. And also considering that Morgan posts only once a month
okay but Q-inspired garment project when? The encounter at farpoint robes are VERY your color scheme!
(I say also as someone very much planning on trying to make those robes to wear at night at cons, theyre just iconic)
This turned out super cute! I love it!
Ahhh that middle doctor barbie was my very first Barbie! I got her for my 4th birthday 🎀🥰
The apron turned out so charming! And I really liked that you wore outfits that you made in the past.
That is adorable! I have some stiff-ish white linen that isn't suitable for shifts or smocks, but might work really well for an apron. ❤
And the crafty women of the period thought it was also an excellent place to store their pins!
this apron is absolutely adorable
I do have some aprons of my mum and grandma.
The tomato pin cushion is so adorable 🥰
Orange handle is fiskars and reminds me of home sewists, black handle makes me think of classic tailor's shears and more industrial!
How fun would a 'flat' ball of yarn look!
@@kathyjohnson2043 It would look so stinkin' cute.
I need more aprons in my life.
morgan i'm OBSESSED with this. like you're sewing barbie!!!!!! omggggg
Such a good supurrvisor. 🐈⬛ 💜
Your apron and methods to achieve it are just amazing. I adore your finished photo op!
This is so dang cute, especially love the oversized props
Barbie 1962. I have the whole vintage outfit for a #3 Barbie 1960. I love that apron. I am thrilled to see you make this one!
I like the extra length on the ties. It looks a little more doll like.
Me clicking this: an apron? Hm. Well, it's a Morgan video, it'll be fun.
Me after watching this: Yes, I need several aprons now, yes.
Update: 4 days later and my first apron is done!
The strawberry string goes around one or two fingers to secure the tomato pin cushion sitting on the back of your hand to keep it to hand while pining fabric and keeping the palm of the hand free for pinning. My mother, aunts and grandmother taught me that when I was little and they were sewing and quilting. That info may have been lost with time. I was a young child in the 60's
This revived my desire to make a Borrower costume. I have an oversized wood key, that will be the Borrower's weapon of choice against cats.
Oh my gosh. I love Morgan Barbie and her most adorable sewing apron! So creative and so well done. ❤
