Bro gloomy galleon made me so depressed as a kid. Especially when I had limited video game time per day, if it was spent in gloomy galleon with awful swimming mechanics I’d get so sad that I’d wasted my time. But the suffering is what made me a man.
13:21 the theory of tiny kongs depression stems from the DK rap saying that she can change size to suit her mood and she chooses to stay small because of that.
I really don't get the hate, yes it's long and has a lot of collectibles, but the atmosphere, music and characters are amazing, I don't think the curated 8 hour experiences we have today are so much better that they make this game's deviation from that formula is so abhorrent
It's easier to hate on a game than to actually play it and appreciate it. I'm sure the same people who are complaining about "too much content" in DK64 are the same ones who say "too little content" about modern games. It's just inconsistent.
Exactly this game is really fun and enjoyable and the people who hate on it are followers who try to get popular and be apart of the crowd instead of actually playing the game and see how much of a blast the game is
@@johnhare7522 I have played the game, and even back then when I was a kid I thought there was something wrong with it, and even though I wasn't able to quite put my finger on what it was I definitely found myself enjoying it way less than many others of it's contemporaries and finding it to be an overall disappointment. As time passes I've come tot he conclusion that in my case it's not as much that it has way too much stuff, it's that it feels unnecessarily and artificially padded, to the point it breaks atmosphere and immersion.
The issue that you choose not to observe is that: yes, we have long ass games now BUT they don't have you walking through the same 7 areas 5 times each
@user-Tod-The-Toad I was actually saying 8 hours as a comparatively short experience, I agree that reusing environments is not generally great but that's not the common criticism of DK64
As someone who was poor growing up and had parents who couldn't buy new games, I loved my copy of DK64. Being long was one of the best things about this game for me. Hahaha
I 'hate' dk64 in the sense that I hate that it could have been better. I like dk64, I've fully completed the fucking game 3 times, which is 3 times more than anyone should. It definitely feels hard for me to want to go back to it, because if I do, I know I'm going to want to complete it fully, which is just, a daunting task.
Nah man its definitely a decent game. Its not terrible, its just not great. Especially not compared to masterpieces like Banjo Kazooie. I get the point about hating its wasted potential. Feel you deeply. Though i have played games with ten times more missed potential so its not a specifically bad case.
Looking through this and see you talk about the percentage counter a fair bit. It's because each item in DK64 is worth a certain percentage. Most of the anomalies derive from two elements: - The game percentage is read as a signed 8-bit integer. This means that if it goes over 127%, it'll start looping back around to -128%. The -124% screen you showed is as a result of collecting the most items you can in the game with glitches (280 Golden Bananas + the rest of the things required for regular 101%). This equals 132% with the formula, but because that's more than 127%, it loops around past -128% to -124% - The developers wanted the Golden Banana behind the 20-fairy door to be the last one. The way they programmed it is that if you had 201 Golden Bananas, it'd remove 0.4% from your percentage. It would then check whether your new percentage was exactly 100%. If you did and you had the 20-fairy golden banana, it would add an extra 1% to your file. It's a very convoluted way of handling their intentions, but it is what it is
While getting a negative percent completion is clearly a glitch; you are actually supposed to be able to get 101% as that's what you get when you collect the final bonus 201st gold banana.
18:10 Maybe this is referring to actual game assets? Like some of them were borrowed from some of the Mario games to build the Creepy Castle level? That's the only logical conclusion I can come up with for this entry. (Great video, btw. I spent years wondering about that darn pillar in the museum LOL)
DK64 is in fact a life changing experience. After doing a 101% playthrough on original hardware by choice with my friends last year we can all agree we have PTSD and permanent damage
2:12 Naw, I was scared too dude! And frankly, I agree on the too big part too... Always gave me the sense Krool had some giant horror monster he was just WAITING to unleash!
So my theory about Tiny becoming not tiny, is that I believe in the manual and game guides it says that she looks up to Candy who is said to be a model. And that Tiny also wants to pursue a career in modeling. And well sometimes models do extreme things to get their modeling physique. And it makes sense cause she does look a lot more like Candy in those newer designs.
I never played Conker when I was a kid (for obvious reasons) so I would like to play it all the way through first to get an idea for the game before I dive deeper. I'm not opposed at all to this idea because its one of the rare games on N64 I never got to, and have wanted to play for a while. An Iceberg would be the perfect excuse lol
I’m glad you brought up how the whole game just has this negative aura about it. I’ve always felt this game to just feel very dark and gloomy as a whole. So many of the secluded rooms that just have an empty/liminal space feeling. That and the very ominous music most of these rooms have just makes you feel so lonely. The catacombs in creepy castle actually scared me as a kid so much that I had to mute the audio on my TV to get all the golden bananas during that segment.

I'm surprised that people aren't impressed by the amount of stuff in an N64 game of all things. I think the only bad thing is significant variations of things and how specific Kongs can only pick up certain color-coded and does not account for color-blindness for the chosen colors. People keep saying that they wish there was a simple button to switch between the Kongs. Wouldn't that make the Kongs feel more akin to switching abilities in a MegaMan game instead of separate characters?

E.g. when he told me about the second level, I was quite eager to reach it myself. I also remember that I enjoyed Jungle Japes so much that I once got up early to have some playtime before getting ready for school. By the way, being a casual gamer, not a glitch seeker, I never found any game breaking strategy, so this wouldn' t spoil anything at least for me. Lastly, a few personal comments on the game, how did you experience them (?) : The soundtrack is hilarious, without an exception, the bug and the minecart races were simply great, two of the three Beaver Bother minigames (those in the later game) had a score annoyingly difficult to break... well, there were so many awesome moments, hopeless to list them up in their entirety. I'd beat the score required but I wouldn't get the prize and you have to beat that and the original Donkey Kong game's core to progress. So here I am trying it a 3rd time.
- I think the re-design for Tiny came from the fact that DK64's character designs were done by Rare, a UK developer and the later designs were done in-house at Nintendo Japan. God I hope that doesn't mean someone wanted to clap monkey cheeks... 😖 - The American release was buggier probably because Nintendo wanted the game out in America first and Rare had time to fix bugs for the European and Japanese versions.
Tiny reappeared to replace Banjo in Diddy Kong Racing DS. Since Banjo is a big boi and Tiny is… well… tiny, having her with his stats wouldn’t have made sense, so they redesigned her to make her older in order for the replacement to make sense. That’s at least my theory.
