    If I wanted to send you one of my vintage hats to reshape and freshen up, is there a long waiting list? And how much does something like this normal run? Ballpark figures

      I’m a day or two away from being ready, I needed some materials, and a brass stretcher is on its way from Europe for me, so any day now. You can contact me quadrogong@gmail.com
      Introductory fees will stay at:
      $30+ shipping for first hat
      $20 for each additional hat.
      shipping fee is always different, I’ll just pass whatever shipping fee I pay on to you.
      That’s cheaper in just a box w tissue. But with a hat box,double boxed is more.
      The worst I ever paid was $34 to Philippines.
      More typically CONUS shipping is $12-20 depending on size,and weight.
      Shipping 2 hats on,y cost slightly more if in the same box,
      but twice as much when shipping in two boxes.

    I hope the son (current owner) enjoys wearing this after your restoration Kevin. Old hats are like old tools and old cars. They were meant to be worn/used. If they just sit around, they're nothing more than fancy dust collectors. Wearing the same hat Grandpa and Dad wore has to be a great feeling!!

      All the vintage hat nerds are arguing over its age, etc. from what I know, the name,”open road” came out in 1948, so this seems to be a 1946 Stratoliner by Stetson like Jerry said. I had a few vintage buffs tell me it was mid 50’s too, but I think Jerry’s info checks out.

  • @danziegner
    @danziegner Год назад +2

    The style term Open Road was invented by Stetson in 1948. Prior, from 1937 the hat was named Stratoliner, which was a western weight hat with a cattleman crease crown and shortened three-inch brim. Your hat there had it’s crown reshaped. And as noted before with a similar hat that came to you, it’s a museum piece that shouldn’t be altered. But, if it is to be altered, I’m glad that you’re doing it.

    • @KTGHATS

    I collect vintage Stetson hats including Open Roads. I also have one from before they were named Open Road. To me the hat in this video appears to be a Stetson cowboy hat, not an Open Road. Open Roads have a flat hatband ribbon while cowboy hats have the multi-line ribbon. Also cowboy hats have 3+ inch brim while Open Roads are 2 5/8 to 2 3/4. How big is this hat's brim? The embroidered liner is a great feature.

    Great hat, great work!
    Question and I apologize if everyone already knows this except me.
    Kevin, is it possible to change the size of an old hat - as an example modify a 7 3/4 hat size to a 7 1/8 by removing the old sweat band and replacing it?

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  Год назад +1

      Turning a XXL to a medium?
      That’s done with padding the hat correctly. Replacing a sweatband doesn’t affect size.
      U can tighten a hat almost as much as u need using a “cap ban nu” pad (Amazon)or various padding applied in the right places. Not through any sort of repair or reblocking
      Now stretching a hat is difficult and near impossible. I don’t recommend it

    My idea was getting a camp draft and having you make it look like this. Thought about getting a premier strat but not sure want to chance wasting money on so that could crule up or wear out like my regular strat.

    • @KTGHATS

      If you intend on wearing it in any rain, I would suggest NOT getting it, You can get the exact same look but way more ruggedness from an Akubra Campdraft www.davidmorgan.com/shop/product/2119/campdraft-hat-open-crown/ or be some with it and just get a soft hat like my green one..Borsalino Allessandria model. They’re identical looking and way more reliable, like night and day.. www.delmonicohatter.com/product/IT452.htm

      Vintage hats take rain like a champ.
      Rain won’t affect a 50’s stratoliner while it will totally destroy a modern one. These hats are very thick and 100% beaver, it’s equivalent to a $500-1000 hat in todays market.

    • @KTGHATS

      Newer hats from this brand will be extremely difficult to refurbish after rain, but not a 75 year old one like this.. it’s about as good as felt can get
