I believe it's Randy on banjo on this. (I still have the album somewhere.) He played a few instruments - all of them well - but is best known as a stellar guitarist and record producer.
The nice cover of the Nitti Gritti Band made me curious. The "feel" of this version here is very different, more "pathos", which blends perfectly with the lyrics. I couldn't decide, I love both versions, but for different reasons....
This Scruggs Brothers recording is the original. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band version came out 30-or-so years later. Both are great. Gary on vocal and guitar here, Randy playing banjo.
@@jamescastle1287 as a dirt band fan. I think this version is definitive. Both brothers we're exceptional. When it gets watered down in other versions it becomes too easy to listen to
Yeah, just heard of his death, RIP. The melody of song is kind of a slowed-down minor version of the fiddle tune "Sally Ann/Sail Away Ladies " that Earl and Lester used to play.
Beautiful tune.❤❤❤❤
Best version ever of this one.
Great song.
Love this song
I've been trying to find this song for three decades !!!!!
Me too. And the vinyl sounds as scratched as my old one probably was.
Earl’s pickin still excites me 50 years after first hearing it!
One of the saddest songs ever ~ A masterpiece .
Only because it's so relevant to so many of us.
❤love this song 🎶
Fantastic song - love this - the original but man, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's cover is also amazing!!
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's version is not as good as this one.
@@markwroblewski6500 Matter of opinion. They are both real good.
@@MJ-dq8ik It never ceases to amaze me how many people present an opinion as a fact..

I found it on Amazon a year or two ago in CD. It is a terrific album. ❤❤
Classic
I wonder if that's Randy on the banjo,or his Dad? I heard he was really good at both guitar and banjo

Dirt bands version is best but Scruggs wrote it. Go figure

Love this song. The Scruggs brothers generally suck but the dirt band really nailed this one.
