Pat Williams did the music for the Bob Newhart show and he had a steady cast of musicians he used. The "Wrecking Crew" was not involved. The lead trumpet is Marvin Stamn. Tom Scott does most of the saxophone parts. Piano is Roger Kellaway (who also played the closing piano solo on "All In The Family"), bass is Jim Hughart and drums is John Guerin.
Bob is a legend and i loved this show got it on dvd and i just watched a few ones of this today still laugh all the time jerry carol bob emily the gang made tv fun to watch
The musicians that played on this track might have been the remnants of the wrecking crew (and a few others). The best the L.A. session scene had to offer at that time.

@@nealbfinn Thanks. I've wondered for years who all these guys were. Just lived for the trumpet solo on this when I was a kid! I'd heard at one time that the lead trumpet was Buddy Childers. I'll take your word for it. Stamm is very impressive on this. Who ever that bari sax is,....man, those guys could play a 70's funk groove. I've long wanted some publication, maybe like the Trumpet Guild mag, to feature guys like this too. So great!
@@assignmentearth2899 It's possible. Childers did a lot of lead work for Williams, as did Larry Ford and Warren Luening. Luening is the trumpet solo on the "Dynasty" theme.
OMFG, I SO agree... This is the hands-down best version of this theme! I loved it THE VERY MOMENT I first heard it way back then. Thank you for posting this. I just wish the very first note was cleanly there. Oh, well. This is FAR BETTER than none at all. Please, someone, download the entire number. I would do it if I had the equipment. Thanks, Bloodburger!
what a cool theme song.it reminds me of growing up in the 70's and being able to stay up late to watch this very funny comedian.if younger people only knew how nice and innocent it was to grow up in the 70's.thank you for posting this cool tune.
Was there a better line up than All in The Family, Bob Newhart Show and The Carole Burnett Show? If there was I'd like to know what the shows were and on which network that they were being aired.
Tysons Accosta I always liked the 1979 - 1982 Friday night combo of The Dukes of Hazzard @8, The Incredible Hulk @9 and Dallas @10, even though I preferred Dynasty over Dallas!
For those of you who like this jazzy version, you can now buy it....the whole 5:49 version ! It's from the1978 album "Come on and shine" by Patrick Williams [the composer]of the song. You can find it on Amazon.com,Google Play and other sites. I bought the Mp3 format version,it was released today Jan 2 2015.
The Bob Newhart theme was composed by Lorenzo and Henrietta Music. L. Music was the voice of Carlton, the doorman, on Rhoda. Sonny Curtis did the Mary Tyler Moore theme.
Patrick Williams, composer and arranger. He also did the Mary Tyler Moore theme, Streets of San Francisco, many other tv and film scores, and arranged/conducted Sinatra's 2 final albums, Duets.
ole hicktown-citys in the middlelands are becoming as hectic. we have no buses nor A-trans but we do have the traffic. this is the rock'nest tune in a sit com up to now!
RIP Bob Newhart
Yeah, that's the one!!! Hearing this reminds me that it was my bed time on Sunday nights! I think it was 8 or 9 oclock!! God I miss the 70's!!
RayfieldA this show was on Saturday nights with Mary Tyler Moore & Carol Burnett Show

Never gets old. I love it.
My favorite TV theme song ever. That trumpet is just way up in the stratosphere. Great arrangement.
@:42 got chills from that trumpet solo. Awesome theme to an awesome show.
Gads, I love this. Ranks right up there with "Barney Miller" and "Taxi" among the coolest TV themes of the '70s.
B'god it does actually kind of remind me of the taxi theme. The electric piano tone and the feel of the piano parts do anyways
Hi Bob! :D
My Bob newheat rest in peace in the name of our Lord and savor Jesus Christ Amen
This is hands down one of the best T.V. themes ever
Great theme song STILL

Song actually called "Home to my Emily", but if you had a gal like Suzanne Plechette at home you'd never have gone anywhere in the first place.

Emily was as pretty as a picture. RIP Suzanne.
Back to my childhood, for real! What a great piece of music...
What an awesome trumpet solo. just soars effortlessly.

if i was around then i would be watching this every sat night
The season 4 theme is by far the best Intro of all!! So so incredibly hip leading to that High Trumpet line … Awesome Intro!!
“Tottering town Howard.” Love the Trumpet wail! Makes one want to move to the Edge water Neighborhood in Good Ole Chicago! :)
Fantastic theme! One of the very best. Written by Lorenzo and Henrietta Music.
RIP Marcia Wallace and Suzanne Pleshette we'll always have the memories
Kudos to Jack Riley (Mr. Carlin). 1935-2016. R.I.P..
I know I still can't believe he's now gone also
And R.I.P. Bill Daily (Howard), 1927-2018.
So the surviving cast members of that show are (cmiiw) bob newhart and peter bonerz?

Good writers can write music which is, at the same time accessible and sophisticated, which pretty much describes the essence of Pat Williams' style.
My god that bass part is so good, it’s like the chart had the chords listed and then just said “play some cool shit”
That's pretty much what happened I think
That is some knock your socks off trumpet playing
The Bob Newhart theme was composed by Lorenzo and Henrietta Music. L. Music was the voice of Carlton, the doorman, on Rhoda. Sonny Curtis did the Mary Tyler Moore theme.
Lorenzo was also one of Rhoda(the show)'s creators.
Pretty cool opening to a show . I really like it
Get down! Go ahead Bob it's your birthday!🕺
I love the 70s!
Patrick Williams, composer and arranger. He also did the Mary Tyler Moore theme, Streets of San Francisco, many other tv and film scores, and arranged/conducted Sinatra's 2 final albums, Duets.
The Bob Newhart theme ROCKS!
Season 5, the piano part is my ringtone lol
OMG! This is my favorite version.
Great post! Still one of my favorite shows (& themes)!
Great show!!!!!
best theme song ever
Ah, the ORIGINAL theme, with the Buddy Childers trumpet solo.
check out the 5/4 measure thrown in there right before the trumpet solo .. what a jam 😛
The version that starts out with piano after the "Hello?" is the best one.
BOB HARTLEY'S BADASSSSS SONG
This needs to play on my morning walk from the subway station to my office.
I like the 5/4 measure.
Memories.
Tony Green is right about many things but on this song, he is extra correct. This song is slammin'!!!
Well, your "taste"isn't all in your mouth because I fully agree. One of the best sitcom themes ever.
ole hicktown-citys in the middlelands are becoming as hectic. we have no buses nor A-trans but we do have the traffic. this is the rock'nest tune in a sit com up to now!
Actually it was used in seasons 4-5.
Kinda borrows a little from Hendrix's "Third Stone From The Sun".

you go Sylvie
Saw Bob in the falls last night. Great. Could you upload the closing theme to this Thank You!
You're welcome Sylvie
Same here Sylvie
I agree Sylvie
Me too Sylvie
Needs a little cat's meow at the end. :P
me too
This is the theme song from season 4 (or 5) and up. I'm surprised no one has posted the actual intros.

Season 4 didn't have as much guitar in the middle as Season 5 did - listen to both back to back, and you'll see what I mean.
THIS is the real theme. The good one. The one with the flugelhorn solo was lame compared to this.
Who is the trumpet player on this?
Actually, I think this is from 1976-77.
:)
I love the theme but ME tv has ruined the show with 13 minutes of commercials
This is hands down one of the best T.V. themes ever
