This version was only a big hit in Australia. I remember it; unfortunately I was too young to appreciate what a classic song it is. Long John and K sing the hell out of it here!
Reached No. 2 nationally in Australia(1 wk), kept from No.1 by The Village People "You Can't Stop The Music". Was also No.3 for 5 weeks. It is still my favourite version of the song....at the time l thought it was an original....l had so much to learn. This song (amongst others) would be played every day in the morning for months in between cartoons in Australia. I was under 10 years old and because I heard it so many times, it always stayed with me and never heard it again until recently after searching for it. Best version of this song I've ever heard. The other song I remember they always played continuously was Shandi (by KISS). I remember in concert, Paul Stanley would say we always play Shandi in Australia because it's so loved here and they wouldn't play it anywhere else. If they knew why it was such a hit, lol.
I was about 12 when this was a hit in Australia and was unaware that it was a remake of a classic.......but I did realise that this was a quality track

@@scottyh8494 Sensational song sung by two beautiful voices, she has such a powerful voice you don't expect & his so deep & sultry. Love Love from Australia 🇦🇺😎💖💜💚💛🎤🎶🎶🎶 3.07.2020.
No one mentions how hilarious this clip is! LJB is on the point of laughing ‘oh baby’ and when Kathi points to his groin in tight black pants and sings ‘you’re trying hard not to show it’ they can both barely contain themselves. Brilliant!
A great version of this classic, reminds me of my teenage years. The original is fantastic too of course. But when Kathi almost sings out a lung it brings goosebumps to my arms. Such a huge voice out of such a little person...
I hate singing 'screamers' but Kathi McDonald is a name I repeated over and over in my head so I'd never forget that woman who sang with Baldry when I saw them opening a show for John Mayall. She had "good pipes" but she wasn't a 'screamer' - I never forgot her. I never will. She was that good.
The greatest performance in the history of music. Leading into the 3rd verse your soul is like a plane as they lead up the runway then Kathi Mcdonald takes you to lift off then Long John Baldry joins in then your flying and everything outside ceasts to exist
Kathi McDonald and the Unusuals at Country Corners Dance Hall in Chimicum 1966. Kathi could sing like an angel and me and every other kid in the county couldn't take their eyes off of her with her boa constrictor! Freaking to much!!!!! RIP Kathi and John
Brilliant. The best version of this song ever. This has been a favourite of mine since I was a kid. It was a massive hit in Australia but unfortunately, not too many other places. Both Kathi and Long John's voices capture the essence of this song. My mum still has the old 45 record. Heaven.
I actually got to meet John in the mid 80's at a night club in Chilliwack BC i was working at a local cable Tv station at the time we did interview had the opportunity to BS with him after.
Outstanding.. I saw Kathi and John perform in Edmonton sometime about this same time.. In a small club. The electricity between these 2 was so apparent. May they both Rock in Peace.
They hated each other. In 86 we had to send 2 cars to pick them up from Vancouver to Whistler. Would have nothing to do with each other but on stage.....electric.
She was a bit of a pompus diva. Her voice says she could have been it in todays world but wrong place and wrong time. She screwed herself with her attitude. She had the voice.
I saw LJB and KM at The Chaudiere Club (AKA The Chaud) back when Gatineau, Quebec was still named Hull. That was probably in the mid 70's, It was a memorable show.
Kathi sang with Big Brother and the Holding Company, after Janis left. She also was an Ikette. Her and Claudia Lennear were Leon Russell's backup singers, along with his band, know as the The Shelter People. She was with him for several years, including his tour in Japan where she sang Superstar (Groupie). She had an amazing voice.
really love this song, remember it in the 70's, me and my mates sitting there drinking in front of da tv and this came on,we were running around town trying to get the record, two days later we had it, and played it non stop for weeks, until the missus nutted out at me and smashed it with the telephone, so i left her, and then afew days later i ended up with another missus and another record of this, long john, and kathi always got a soft spot in my heart for them, sfh, Arruuhh, all the way from...napier, new zealand,

This is by far, the best version of the song. Their voices mix so well together. They really seem to have genuine chemistry between them. I love Long John Baldry's deep masculine voice.....and his sexy beard which Kathi seemed very glad to touch at 5:06 I would have done the same ;-)

Like you, I bought the single (45) back in 1979 and I could not stop playing it. This is by far, my favorite version of the song. Their voices (Long John and Kathi) are perfect together. They both have wonderful voices. It is the first time that I see them performing together on stage and I can feel they appreciate one another. What a wonderful sight....thanks so much for posting the video!
I was lucky and saw him twice: first time was in Nanaimo, BC at a tiny club near city center, and Alan Murphy was on guitar. What a show! Second time was in Vancouver, BC at a barn-like club over the ocean at the end of a pier ( I think it was called "Harrah's"…?). Kathi McDonald was in that band, and she was just as great as she is in this video. LJB was a very likeable, charismatic performer with an unforgettable image, and his live singing was always exciting, emotional and perfectly delivered.
