@@johnnysweekends Have you tested sine wave production of these generators? I've seen that the Honda produces very clean electricity. I would love to know about the pulsar before purchase.
I bought the 2200w dual fuel for my in-laws. It was around $400 on sale. Came with much more than my Hondas in the box, slightly louder, but a great bang for the buck.
Ive had mine a little over a year now i use it with propane while camping...i use a 30lb propane tank and it will run my camper for 4 days straight and have propane left to spare and yhats running the ac at 62 degrees on eco mode the microwave when needed and lights coffee pot and chargers for the kids ipads...best dual fual generator on the market i change the oil after 48hrs of use and havent had a problem at all after intial break in there hasnt been any metal residue on the dip stick magnet and its been well over 100 degeees when we were camping in the summer i give 2 thumbs up 5 stars rating
Propane is generally rated at about 1/2 hour per pound. So 30 pound tanks generally only get about 15 hours of run time depending on load. Even the super efficient tiny propane only generators get about 1 hour per pound. There is no chance this is running 96 hours on the 30lb tank.
@wolfe1978nm more than welcome to come time it yourself just telling like it is from Friday afternoon til Monday til I turned it off wouldn't say a full 96 hrs
That's running everything you could ask for....I'm considering the same for my camper. ..I was also considering the WEN 3600....I wasn't sure about Pulsar reliability? Also, Do you find this Pulsar to be quiet? The WEN does seem louder but has good reliability reviews. Thanks.
@stevenmaniscalco1439 heard good and bad about Wen buddy of mine has one and it's broke down twice now first the head went bad now he's burnt up the motor we've had the generators the same amount of time both were purchased last Christmas
I was struggling with my Onan4k for most of the last 10 years that I've owned my current 20yr old RV. I hesitated to remove it since it might detract from resale but finally I got tired of the grief and saw for the first time a suitcase generator rated 4k and dual fuel as a bonus and it would fit the same spot with space to spare. I bought the Pulsar one year ago carefully broke it in, also made a Tee fitting and cutoff for the propane on my RV. It seemed to have no problem with my rooftop 13.5k AC although I'm in Alaska and dont use AC much. Thank you so much for this review which I suppose I especially like since it validates my experience so far with my Pulsar. It's nice to see it tested under different loads with meters and test equipment.
I bought 3 of these in 2023. I believe I paid like 425 for one and 499 for the other two. They are fantastic and you will struggle to find a more powerful dual fuel unit at 47lbs. That's the key they are easy for myself and my wife to handle or deploy. Just ran 3 days no electric in Houston for the Hurricane. One ran 2 refrigerators and two freezers and my garage doors the other ran my main refrigerator and a 8500 btu portable ac. They worked fantastic and I changed the oil every morning has it only takes about 10 minutes. Just note some literature doesn't reflect the proper amount of oil. They take 15.8 ounces. I use a magnetic dip stick. I think I will sell my pulsar 2200 and use that money to get a fourth unit. They are great backups to a larger system.
@busterhyman6633 -- can you shed any light on what the fuel consumption is like for these things? For my little van I really only need something like a 2200 watt unit (running a 5k BTU AC and a 20 amp 12v house battery charger at the most, typically) -- but this one is such a good deal and the idea of running it on propane sounds nice and clean. But if it also means it's a bigger engine that's going to require more gas to run even at a smaller load, I'm not sure if I'm actually going to save or lose more on fuel costs to run it every day in the summer.
I have an older Honda 2000i generator from about 2011, and I think is reaching life expentancy and have been looking around for a replacement, though Hondas are just getting more costly. I've seen several of these videos comparing noise levels, and though the instrumentaion is great, the human ear cannot hear the 1,2, or 3 decibles differences. I do like this Pulsar 30A plug, and the dual fuel feature, though I'd like to see a valid propane usage video or documentation. Great comparison anyway. Having the meters side by side, really made the point.
That's a sweet price point on that. Pulsar sounds like the Pecron of the solar world. Good product with a affordable price point. Honda needs to wake up. 2024 they should have dual fuel at this point especially with the prices they have.
@@johnnysweekendsI own a Yamaha ef2000i and installed a propane kit on it about 6 years ago and love it. But I need a little more power. I thought about buying another 2000w gen and adding a propane kit again but for the price of the pulsar I have the power of 2 small gens in 1, for less than half the price
Living off grid will tell you if a generator is good or not. I’ll put it to you like this. I won’t waste my money on another Honda after owning 4 eu2000’s.
I dont know why I have to explain to so many that Honda just isn’t what it was. They had there reign but so much competition to where now if you can get 60-70% the hours of a Honda then you are ahead on the next one. Sure you can buy parts for the Honda, but your rebuilding a used up machine unless your doing internals. Then it’s not even worth it. Thanks for the feedback. I know you put a lot of hours on your units. What are you currently using?
@@johnnysweekends I have switched to Champion. The Honda’s are way to difficult to work on and parts are expensive. Carburetor issues and low oil sensor issues. To get an oil sensor repaired costs just as much or more then buying a new Champion. It’s inside the case of the engine so the whole motor has to be disassembled and basically resealed. It was totally my fault and left fuel in my 2016 model year Champion. Jump on their website and ordered a new carburetor and gasket kit for less then $50 shipped. 20 min later back up and running. I still have it but in storage. Since then I have purchased a pair of duel fuel generators and have never put a drop of gasoline in them. They have hundreds of hours on them with zero issues. I belong to DIY solar forum. There are off gridders logging up to 5000 hours out of Chinese generators like Champion and Harbor Freight before replacing them.
This generator is a workhorse! I ran the house for two days and it didn’t miss a beat. It ran a portable A/C, fridge, freezer, lights, and tv. I’m guessing I was running a continuous 20 to 25 amps and surging up to 30 at times.
That’s a nifty little generator! Can’t beat that price! I did order the propane leak detector because I run a propane heater both in my man cave and trailer. 🤠👍🇺🇸
I have always liked this size. Much like the Honda but now dual fuel and honestly when running both around the higher ranges like 1200 watts to 1800 watts, even though the meter shows less DB its pretty hard to tell because it was only about 2 db less around those which is pretty tough to tell.
@Sanity586 The eco function has nothing to do with making it quieter. The eco simply throttles the engine speed down from 4000rpm to 3200rpm roughly. But as loads increase so does rpm, hence sure the unit will get louder. This is how inverter gens work, well one of the features. Both units were set on eco and both units increased in engine rpm through the test.
Two issues with this generator. Recently did a 7K trip with our camper. This was our power source many nights. I fought this thing for a few days. Issue one and NOT a pulsar issue more a generator issue is the floating neutral. This caused a few issues with high loads and GFCI. Added a neutral plug all issues went away. The only issue with this generator is the stupid strainer in the fuel tank.if not perfectly lined up it will block the fuel vent hose which does not allow gas to flow. I removed this strainer and it now runs like a champ.

I bought the Honda 2200 and the companion years ago and converted both to dual fuel. Love them but I assure you if the Pulsar 4000 was available back when I bought my Honda's I would not have looked at the Honda generator. Was wondering what the voltage drop is between the Pulsar and the Honda with a similar load. That could be an idea for another video. Thanks for the video and for sharing, great video.
This is a GREAT generator...will run and run and run, the ONLY things is that you have to be religious about changing the oil, if you're not, the generator will start to falter...
Great video! I actually just bought that Pulsar myself in December. On sale for $489 at Walmart! I did a full break in and I’m still putting it through its paces. When you have eco mode on and you block load with 1500w, does your unit seem to “step” up a 2-3 times to increase rpm? As opposed to just a smooth ramp up? Mine does. With eco off, it block loads smoothly. Honestly for the $489 I wanted to find faults with the Pulsar but it’s been running great with no issues at all. The only complaint is the noise, but that is expected with a 145cc engine stuffed into the same package at the 80cc. I’ve run a bunch of inverter gens and can often tell a brand by the sound of the unit running and exhaust. I also compared the Pulsar to a Champion 2000 dual fuel inverter gen and with the sound test, the Champion was about 2-3db quieter no load eco on. What was interesting is that the Pulsar ended up quieter at 1500w by about 2-3 db since it’s a bigger engine with higher output. The champion has a very raspy exhaust sound and higher pitch. The pulsar has a much lower percussive sound which seems to pass through house walls unfortunately. I’m planning to build a deck box enclosure for it, to try and block some of that noise. But overall it seems solid. Just like you said, for the cost of buying another Honda and then adding a $250 propane kit, the Pulsar has the power of 2 Hondas and propane built in. So saving $1500, I could build a deck box enclosure for maybe $200 for the sound
The little 80cc Yamaha clones in many gens sound great at the low rpm but once past about 30% load they start getting louder and around the peak they are pretty raspy like you said and I much prefer the lower tones like the Honda and the 145cc unit. But yes many people like this series of gens with the 145cc engine.
@@tristanschaper281 sounds like you have a lot of experience with generators. Any advice on the best budget generator in the 2300 to 2500 watt range? Of course the 4kw sounds like a great deal, especially if it goes on sale - but since all I'm usually running is a 5K BTU AC unit and a 20 amp battery charger, I don't think I really need that much.
@@tristanschaper281 I mean ideally I would love to have dual fuel with electric/remote start capability. I would also really love to have easy access doors to the oil change and air filter that don't require unscrewing multiple screws on a big panel. I'm also really hoping to not have to spend more than $500. This week seems like the best week to figure this out because of all the Black Friday deals.
Every 3db is twice as loud. I'll stick with my Honda eu2000i, it's quieter, easier to maintain and it has that famous Honda reliability. I purchased mine used and have had it for 8 years, still going strong.
I've never understood why it is that when these comparisons are done a 2k watt Honda is used versus a 4k generic generator. Why would you not compare the 4k Pulsar to a 4k Honda. From what I saw on Honda's website their 4k generator would produce 66-67 decibels of noise, comparable to what the Pulsar is producing. Or, is my ignorance of things keeping me from understanding?
When ever I review products, number one question is how loud it is, how is it compared to a Honda. No one seems to care or think about the fact this has a larger engine than the Honda which will produce more noise. There is no enclosed Honda unit that is 4000 watts that I know of. The little Honda is good but many times people are wanting the same size unit with just a little more power. And by only 2-300 watts. And that’s where these are filling the gap. I wish Honda would make something like this in a dual fuel front he factory. The eu3200i is just not appealing honestly. Way bigger and heavier and the price is crazy. So these have been fitting the bill.
Funny u say that, exact reason im on here. Leaving for trip tomorrow, and my Champion 2500 just cant run my 14.5 AC. Itll sometimes run for minute or two then crap out. Very dissapointed considering i paid $700 for dam thing. I think im gonna head to home depot and pick up one of these.
Just got my Pulsar GD400BN. Am I understanding that you can buy an extension propane hose with 3/8 female flare and 1/4 male plug and use it to connect generator to RV quick connect port without any other modifications? You were talking about the regulator on this one being different. Other videos on you tube show regulators for other brand generators being taken off, adapter modifications, etc so I'm understanding none of that will have to be done?
The load regulator on the Pulsar is inside the generator. Which is good, and what you want for easy RV how up. A 3/8th flare for the gen side and a quick connect for the other side. Much like a BBQ or fore pit and you are good to go but you want the larger hose like this one…..amzn.to/3wsSnv6
Is the Ecoflow generator your preferred power source to supplement your Ecoflow Pro OR are you finding advantages to switching to a suitcase generator like the Pulsar?
There are several benefits and drawbacks backs to the smart gen from Ecoflow. One is I have a battery in all slots, so now if I want to use smart gen I have to disconnect a battery from my power kit. And that battery won’t get charged. And when you have a 15kwh battery bank 1650 watts from the smaller smart gen can take a long time. 2500 watts would be a little more ideal. But the pulsar is able to run my 13.5k AC or my 15k ac. It could do both but it’s maxed and won’t last long. But when just running the main AC unit I’m drawing about 1700-1800 watts and dumping 200-400 watts back into PL plus what ever might be left from solar. That way if I wanna use AC through the night, I have enough battery and don’t have to run the generator. But I focus on using my front AC a lot and a fan to circulate the air and then I’m only using about 1000-1200 watts at most. That’s a problem with Ecoflow is if you have a delta pro or delta pro 3 and have it full with extra batteries you can’t plug in smart Gen for DC charging. So then it’s AC charging and pass through Butttttttt……….stay tuned 😁
@@johnnysweekends Thanks. I watched a bunch of your other videos this afternoon (just found your channel which is a great resource!) and jumped on the good deal for the Pecron E3600LFP (thanks for the additional discount!). The Pulsar seems like a good compliment to run things while charging thanks to the pass thru capabilities. I was going to go down the Victron route (have one BB GC3) but you’ve convinced me on the benefits (speed and cost) or going down the solar generator route. Thanks for all the great content!
Best seller but after a while , have to throw away, broke. Honda is pricy but one of my friend had it over 10 years, used on site almost daily, still no sign of going down. Run on first pull. True 20A circuit. This is what we talk about; LONG TERN RELIABILITY 😊
You are talking about a generator that’s not even in this class. If it’s ten years old or more it’s an older design that was probably designed and built 15 years ago or more. When Honda still build quality…..read the forums and group pages. See the recalls on the eu2220i when it was first released in spring of 2018. The eu7000 failures of fuel pumps and more or recalls this past year due to fire. Honda was and still is a good generator, but they are stagnant, and the price is high for whats available for the common user and they are missing a big big market. And they also realize no money is made on units that last 20 years. II couldn’t even get an inverter board for my eu3000is…it was DCed and no SS number. So if it died…it’s a paper weight. Spendy paper weight
I ended up getting the newer model Pulsar GX4000, not GD4000 mainly just due to availability at the time of purchase. While I haven't sound meter tested, I have heard it is a tad quieter than the GD model. The GX model is still a bit rough around the edges. Had to fix up the valve lash clearances right away as it was way off and causing the generator to run really rough. Had to change the spark plug because it was a counterfeit piece of junk that also ruined the day when I tried to run on it. After all of the work I have done on it basically straight out of the box, it still doesn't sound as nice under low idle as the older GD model, but it does hum nicely now under load. Just looking at things like this, I doubt this is a generator made to last. So then you look into engine RPMs under load and it certainly sounds a lot faster than 3,600 RPM. You kind of want 3,600 RPM or less for a reason because it is a lot less wear and tear on the engine. Some people have said generators like this pull 4,500 RPM and to my ear that sounds about right. It is also quieter to run an engine at or below 3,600 RPM and as you are finding, this generator is not as quiet as some of the competition. Not bad, but certainly not the greatest. I had to run all day due to a power outage right after I finished breaking in the engine and even with this slightly higher sound level, my neighbors were fine. They said they couldn't hear it at all inside their place. I know at least for car engines, which are bigger, my dad for example setup his Suzuki Samari to have the engine pull 4,500 RPM at regular freeway speed. That engine was constantly breaking down. My parents also had a 4-cylinder minivan right before the 6-cylinder model came out and that engine also constantly broke down from the higher loads on it, probably pulling well over 4,000 RPM at regular freeway speeds. I had a high mileage used Escort at one point in college pulling something more like 3,000 RPM at the same freeway speeds and it was far more reliable while being a high mileage Ford to give you an idea of how poor the reliability of these higher running RPM engines were. A big competitor I see in this space is the Predator 5000. The Predator 5000 does propane and gasoline like this one and I even found someone making a natural gas kit for it, which is just new hoses and external regulators. As a little side point with the demand regulator being external on the Predator 5000, it allows a demand regulator adjusted for natural gas to be used with the generator. The Predator 5000 only goes up to 3,600 RPM. It has electric start. It is significantly quieter than this generator. But then you are looking at twice the weight of the GX model Pulsar and over twice the weight of the older GD model, it is twice the size, and nearly twice the price. Granted battery electric start adds a lot of size and mass to a generator, so stripping that out makes the generator significantly lighter and smaller on its own. You look at it and you think I want something that is small, an easy one man job to move around, and inexpensive and you end up with something like the Pulsar GD model. You can try something like the GX model, which has more features, but as I mentioned this model has some issues you need to work on straight out of the box and it is a little bit bigger and heavier. These little Pulsar generators are probably not going to last a very long time with regular use and staying on top of maintenance. Just the engine slamming away as hard as it does to do so much in a compact package alone screams this thing is not meant to last forever. And with my GX model, when you have to do a bunch of stuff to it just to get it to run reasonably well straight out of the box like I did, this seems like an even more dubious proposition to pin hopes on it lasting a long time under regular use. Granted, propane burns more cleanly and leaves less deposits, so this should help the engine last longer I would think. If you want a generator that lasts a long time, you are probably looking at a Honda or even Predator where it is built to higher standards and the generator is much bigger and bulkier for its rated power output. I suppose it depends on what your priority is. I was more after compact and cheap for occasional use. If you are after regular use and size and weight is not so much a priority and are willing to spend more for your workhorse generator, I don't think the Pulsar is for you. As every db makes a difference, getting to as quiet as possible, the Pulsar is also not for you. If you prioritize more like I have, then sure, the Pulsar is a rare gem. It is getting an important job done and its sound level is good enough. And anyways when it comes to making a generator last, you will need to be handy enough to do the things I did to my GX model generator.
So what hose are you using to go from the generator to your RV quick connect? I'm wanting to get mine set up for connecting to the RV quick connect (where a gas stove would normally connect) and then to the generator.
There's nothing in this video that has any testing about fuel consumption. It's just noise level. Most people don't really care about the noise because they're inside and they want to know more about fuel consumption and what load uses the most and the least so compare it to 25% load 50% load, 75% load and 100% load some people do care about noise level but I'm probably just going to throw it in a box and I'm done. I don't know fuel consumption. Edit: I just saw that you have a video for that
Great video. Just what I've been looking for. I want to hook the Pulsar unit to the low pressure propane outlet on my RV. I see you did that. Great! Did you need to get a special hose for this hookup? If so, where can I get one?
I dont know what your setup is at all. But I also have a high volume regulator so I can run many items in the rv and the gen at the same time if needed. Which is a 345k btu auto switch regulator. Pretty common but some may be as low as 160k btu. You will need to T out of the bottom of the regulator to add a new line over for the generator which should be at least 3/8th inch. Mine is 3/8 so I can have a longer line and also test future products. But can use the 5/16th for the smaller gens. Here is a list of some items you may need. High volume regulator amzn.to/3vZQfdT Maybe take regulator to Home Depot and build your setup but something like this. Brass T:amzn.to/3OwtKnr 3/8th hose amzn.to/492dfrp Or if you have a propane outlet for a BBQ you can use those for the small to medium generators most times. Simple hook up by using this hose..: amzn.to/4bj44V3
Hey @Johnny’s weekends hope all is well. Amazing videos as always. How do you feel between the pulsar 4000 vs the genmax 3500iad. In addition to that , is the gen max 3500iaed. Are they comparable ? Pro/cons ?? Also, Is the added cost of electric start worth it or would you say they are pretty reliable recoil starts ? Any advice would help for a fellow camper. Thanks again in advance. Keep doing what you’re doing brother.
Electric start defiantly has its pros and cons. The early versions of the 3500iad has a small parasitic drain so the battery would drain enough to where if you dont start it or charge it in about 1.5 months it may not have enough battery to start. The new ones are now better. I myself prefer the size of the pulsar unit. Little smaller and honestly I dont know why it is quieter overall even though same engine and Im pretty sure same muffler. So must be the the housing design helps muffle engine noise. Although I just bought the new pulsar …maxpeedingrods just sent me there new unit….uhhh and its real nice!! That will be out next weekend as I have been playing with it still. See here amzn.to/3wbiYfJ
To me the price makes this an easy choice if you only need a small generator once in a while. Don’t be deceived by the dB different of 3-4 dB. An increase of 6 dB represented double the amplitude. For myself It’s an easy call. I call my friend and borrow his.
When you say use onboard propane, does that mean that you can use the quick connect propane outlet for gas grills since it is a regulated propane source? Thanks
Yes!! If you have a generator that has the on demand regulator already inside the generator then you can use basically the bbq outlet and a 20ft line from there. 😀👍🏼
@@johnnysweekends from your video I thought you said that the Pulsar does have the on demand regulator already inside so all I would need would be a male quick connect and a 29ft line. Thanks
@johnnysweekends - in terms of perception to your ear, is there a big difference between the Pulsar and the Honda? I can see the difference on the db meter but not sure how that translates to real world perception.
The Honda is still quieter over all in the low and mid range. When Honda is maxed the pulsar still has more to go and that’s when they are closer but Honda still edges it out barely. But are you gonna stand there and just look and listen to it? Also the pulsar easily handles 2000-2200 watts which is perfect for most everyone who wants to run up to a 15k ac unit that uses a max 1800 watts. Put in the back of you pick up bed and even quieter 👍🏼
@@johnnysweekends so one more question (and to answer yours no I’m not going to just stand there and listen to it - well not for long anyway 😂). I saw you respond affirmatively to a comment wishing the Genmax 4600 was quieter. Is it noticeably (annoyingly) louder than the Pulsar? I could live with a noise increase over my Honda 2200 and it sounds like the Pulsar is reasonable in that category - does the Genmax jump into a another category sound-wise or is it just an incremental bump? I’m thinking of upgrading my 2200 to either the Pulsar or the Genmax before the start of hurricane season, hence all the questions. And the Genmax 4600 is on sale at Amazon right now.
@dondgc2298 the genmax for some reason just seems louder especially at around the 60% load and above. More so than the pulsar. It’s also using a larger engine at 159cc verses 145cc. Overall pretty close but yea I was surprised as it got up to around 50% and then more and it was just not as quiet as I would have liked it. I suggested to genmax that the new units have to be quieter. Because even the pulsar at the 75% load area is louder than say a 4500 champion or predator. But size difference and weight is a thing to consider. But I didn’t buy it to run more than about 2200-2300 watts. Most times it wont see more than 2000 and it loves it there. If you are always needing more than step up to a larger. I think the EFi is good but at the 50% range and below. Even the Honda eu3200 doesnt do well above 2100 watts on fuel efficiency. Such a small tank at 2100 watts lasts about 4 hrs. About 5.5-6 hrs at 1700 watts or so. I prefer the pulsar for the duel fuel and size and again it will mostly live at 2200 watts and below which is perfect.
I just found this review, and thanks! Thinking seriously about getting this generator over the comparable Champion. What type of gas fitting is on the Pulsar? It’s not a quick connect it seems. Did you have to make a custom hose to connect to your RV’s propane port? Thanks !
Thanks for the excellent review. Your facts convinced me the Pulsar is for us. BTW, what's the red device attached to your turning point hitch? Thanks...
They can be different brands as long as they are both inverter and kinda close in power. Something like 30 amp total and 15 amp total I think is too much of a spread. 30 and 25…25 and 20amp or so would be better.
do you have the issue with spark plug boot grommet doesn’t fit in the hole?? my spark plug boot slips off after hours of running because the grommet isn't going into the hole.
No, someone else mentioned this and not sure why some have a metal boot. Mine is rubber insulated. Which is how most are. So not sure why yours is like that.
You can but i normally parallel Hondas with Hondas and then Chinese with Chinese lol. Weird as it is but it works and I have done it and many others have as well. So if needing more amps you can.
This has an internal load regulator? So others with an external can't hook up to onboard propane? I thought you can't double regulate so any generator with internal was a no go...??? Others with an external regulator you can just run a straight hose?? Is that not correct?
Since this generator has a floating neutral it is probably wise and safe to use a grounding plug, which would take up the one 120v outlet or learn how to bond the generator neutral to ground, which might void the warranty. Most portable generators have bonded neutrals for safety and code requirements. Read up on it!
This is actually completely wrong. Most portable generators do not have a bonded neutral when looking at inverter units. As per NEC code you should not have two points of bonding hence a bonded generator going to a bonded home, only one should be bonded when using a portable inverter unit. Same with a RV a bond is not necessary as you will use the trailers bond. A bonding plug for RVs is typically only needed when the RV has an onboard PMS or EMS or if using say a power watchdog. And yes I have read up on it. 🤷🏼♂️
@@johnnysweekends Hi, actually is was a suggestion and not personal. Most folks be they Rvers, van dwellers and even homeowners will want to use their portable generators for projects where they are away from a grid connection, which is often for full-timers. In this instance it is recommended to have the generator bonded to ground for safety. Contractors that work at sites without power usually know this. As you know it is an easy fix with a bonded grounding plug. RUclips has many short videos showing how easy it is to do or simply buy one for a small price. Thought it was in the best interest to let others know that they should look into it.

We're shopping for a dual-fuel generator and are intrigued by your recommendation. The AZ reviews have nearly 10% one star with many complaints that they didn't work or worked briefly and then stopped and the customer support was poor. That gives us pause. Now that you've had yours for a few months, what has your experience been?
So my experience first. Now this gen and its engine has now been around for a little while and used in several models. I used it in the genmax 3500 dual fuel, the Maxpeeding rods 3200,3300 and 3500 which I still have the 3500 and about 11 hrs i think 🤔. The newer pulsar 4000 has I think 9 hours on it as I rotate a lot of units or lend them out when someone needs one. With all the solar now it’s becoming rare I use my gen for more than a couple hours. Mainly to keep the batteries close to top to run ac on and off through the night on the battery bank. Which even then its only the first 3-5 hours. I also avoid 100+ areas when possible. Now for negative reviews. I read many many reviews good and bad. Why??? I have no idea, but like many most are people who come back to complain and the ones who never have problems you never hear from. And people dont want to hear it, but sometimes they are the problem and the ones at fault why the unit doesnt work right or it failed or its hard starting. Especially using propane which is probably why Honda stays away from it. Air in the line, low supply from an old regulator and more. So sometimes it’s not the gen but the supply or the person using it. Propane can cause issues if anything is faulty or old on the supply side. I can only go off my experience and what people say who have come to leave a comment on my channel. Then the reviews i have to read and judge what they say. Is it more the user or the unit ? I love how people compare, or it’s louder than the Yamaha 2000is or Honda eu2000is. OK the Yamaha has a 80cc engine, the Honda has a 98.5 cc engine. This is 145cc engine. Unfortunately the bigger you get the harder it is to keep quiet. But if only using it around 2200 watts and less especially around 1800 or less it’s more than acceptable. Now will it last as long as the Honda, no. Will it get close..? Maybe. But its factory dual fuel, many parts can be found, and it’s the same size and weight and has more power. And if an internal part on the Honda dies at 1500 hours, am I going to pay a shop or take my time to repair an old unit and then maybe get 200 hours before it dies again. It’s like putting money into a really old car. When is the point to let it go…? Idk. I think if you are using it a ton and repeatative use then the Honda may be better. If very occasional use and only for camping which you may only do for a year or two, save the money. Buy a warranty and happy trails. Sorry for the unload there lol. Hope this helps
Our Pulsar 4000 dual fuel generator just arrived today. We followed the directions and have it hooked up to our full propane tank. The generator won't start. No leaks. Any suggestions?
Add oil, flip switch to propane. Open propane tank, bleed air if you can will make it start quicker. Make sure eco switch is off. Also out into run position ….do not turn it to choke while using propane. Hope this helps
I decided to try to run it on gasoline. It works great on gasoline. I’m thinking maybe after it’s had a chance to run a while. I can try the propane again and see if it works then. I know my propane tank works because it’s attached to my grill and I was able to fire up the grill. I’m thinking the issue must be with the propane hose connecting to the generator.
@lindafadner4319 ahh interesting. Well not uncommon for regulators to be bad on arrival for anything… My new BbQ last year didn’t work because of one lol. Contact customer service for a replacement or where ever you got it
It’s just basically this…..I also cut a 3rd off for the gen. The other 2/3rds sits at the base of my RV steps amzn.to/3TZY8s6 There are different sizes though if you want bigger or smaller. Or if you want to cut it or not
@@andrewpoloni4197 Tractor supple has those mats also - we have several, and I now use a cut off piece for my generators since seeing Johnny using it. Great idea.
12:00 of someone walking around with a decibel meter. Send the oil drained from these two units off to a lab to see how much metal is in the Pulsar's oil. Then go buy two of the Honda generators and pair them together, if you need that much output.
Are you asking me to be like Todd? I dont mind sending off the oil. In fact why not. I’ll get more hours on both the pulsar and my other Honda. Which I do have 3 but I dont use them much.
@@johnnysweekends - I'm not asking you to be anything, just pointing out that a product which is half the price may be half the value. The Honda unit you (unfairly) compared this to has an incredible track record of service and reliability. They're expensive, and probably worth every penny you pay for one, if you ever actually need to use it.
@jasonbroom7147 the Honda is fine, but you have to compare several factors. Price…..pulsar Power output…pulsar Types of fuel…pulsar Larger tank and longer run times…pulsar Can you get parts for both….yes Can you get enough parts to rebuild both…Honda wins… Would I put money into a Honda that’s already at its 60-70 % service life….nope Read several forums, group pages and more. Heck even the comment from @offgridliving he had 4 eu2000is models and uses generators all the time. As in every day. He’s done with Honda. Not worth the price, the down time, and the runaround that Honda does to get out of anything warranty. They dont fix non start issues for free. There is a diagnostic charge then if it’s a failed item/part that’s covered they “might” cover it under warranty. I hear these stories more and more. I just dont throw a video together out of no where. This was months in the making to make sure it is a best seller. Some are simple reviews of hey whats new. Other vids are hey this is whats proven. Take it for what ya will, I love my little eu2200i models booth are great and quiet. But so many others are doing so good now, it’s hard not to look at something else for the average user especially when you need more than what the Honda can put out.
If I send you picture valves can you tell me issue? Exhaust and intake inner pins ones valves rock on inside center missing metal 4 hours? Valves set tighter than factory specs. @dondgc2298 yesss! Don’t know if you have seen this short video but I show some pros and cons and how a dual fuel carb works. Dual Fuel Generators Are Better! ruclips.net/video/_TldkEDRNv8/видео.html
I need some advice. I just got this generate and tried running my 13.5k A/C on my pop-up and the generator trips. Shouldn’t it run this A/C with no problem??
I would say your AC has some issues. It should easily run and start that unit. The capacitor or condenser may need replacement or the whole unit needs to be serviced. I would load check if you can from a AC plug. Or have someone look at it
Now that's a silly statement. There are still those among us who take pride in ownership of quality gear. If these cheap units appeal to you, great; buy them. But don't think for a moment they're as good as a Honda or Yamaha.
Never said they were as good. But …when it comes to dollars spent verses hours, verses output, verses downtime to have a unit repaired and the parts only goes back into a used/worn unit. That is where some cheaper units make a lot more sense when adding time and money. Hence construction guys, they will buy the cheapest piece of crap gen, and let there’s guys abuse it. A Honda has to be repaired and taken to a shop unless they wanna do it. At a Honda shop you are $150 a hour. Doesn’t make a lot of sense now when these cheaper units are starting to do pretty well. Will they get as many hours back to back…..no. But i will get more hours, have a spare with two that is still cheaper than one Honda and when your single unit breaks I have a spare and still am going. There are pros and cons to everything out there. Unfortunately Honda is missing a big big market hence we have finally seen a sale. And maybe will see more sales or a fixed lower price. And a new unit that doesn’t need $350 to make it run propane adding to the cost. Again now 3 units verses one. It made sense along time ago. Much like it didn’t make since to buy anything form over seas in the 70-80s….honda…ewww junk. But after some time….well the rest is history until someone takes over with something cheaper and performing almost as good for half the price. And then the cycle repeats it self again. I had 4 Hondas now down to 3…which soon will be 2 because the EFI will go…. That makes no sense to me especially if something happens warranty will be void very quick. And my companion already doesn’t seem to be the same as my eu2200i. I use the companion a little more but I need to check it out.
So are you saying that your AC does not need a soft start using the Pulsar 4000? Some guy an a FB group said that every AC needs a soft start when using a generator. I thinks that’s Bad is why I ask.
Have You reviewed the ALP generator? If you do I would Love it! If you would test it at 25% load. 50% load 75% load and 100% load. All of the people that I've been looking for review for do not test it at 100% load. That makes me mad
If you are looking at only what is more efficient or has more power then gasoline is. It has more btu’s per gallon. But depending where you live propane can be much cheaper so then propane may be a better option. Not to mention cleaner burning and better for everything all around
Really nice video/review. Do you know what the sign wave looks like? Is it a pure sign or modified? Just wondering if it’s one of the ”inverter” / really clean power generator? Thank you.
The “sine” wave on these are the same as the genmax gens and maxpeedingrods as they run the same inverter board and engine. Well pretty sure it’s the same inverter board or very close. I will do a load test on it soon but cool temps are really easy for gen units to perform well. But the other units have done well in those tests. Plus if it doesn’t put out a clean sine wave I wont recommend it and it would get eaten alive from reviews.
Why no real load test? I would be very surprised if this unit comes anywhere close to its rated continuous and surge output claims. At the ambient temperatures you were testing at, the Honda will run all day at 2000 Watts and at 2200 Watts the overload light will likely not even be flashing yet. Honda is very conservative on their continuous and surge ratings. Unlike these cheap knockoffs that are more often than not, very optimistic and untruthful. These cheap generators are nice toys, but if you need something you can absolutely rely on, buy a Honda or Yamaha. As the saying goes, “buy once, cry once”. Just my experience and opinions of course!
I didn’t do a load test as in those conditions it’s pretty easy for any gen to perform well. But I have also tested several with this almost exact configuration like the genmax or maxpeedingrods 3500 models. They use the same engine and so far they have performed well. The little maxpeedingrods is very identical to the pulsar 4000 but in a 3500 unit and has also been a popular seller. They also just came out with two new models I should have soon. Yamaha is now made in china and Honda has figured out generators and equipment that last 20 years does not make money. So even they dont last like they used to. Join enough forum pages and you’ll see many complaints with the newer units. And if you get 60-70% of the hours of an off brand and can buy 2 of them well you are ahead of what the Honda does. And as a business are you going to put money into a Honda that’s already produced 70% of its working life to only have it fail again in a year? Plus the down time to have the Honda fixed? People are realizing its easier to just go buy a champion or other like brand and it’s available everywhere and its cheaper. I like my little Hondas and even the 3200 is nice but it’s heavy and again people want a propane or NG option. So an added expense again.
Honda is only 4 hrs …. But you have to make sure you pay attention to what load they are giving you that spec. Honda @50% load 4 hrs roughly Pulsar @50% load 4.5 hrs roughly 👍🏼
Typical household hammer to the spark plug will quiet down that non Honda brand., So don’t run it near other campers unless you have a stockpile of plugs.
Who does actually make it. Pulsar ? Maxpeedingrods? They are all the same, different names and colours. Or are they just sold to companies and they put their own brand name on it?
I like your vids,But,you lost me saying this is a "best selling" gen!! Your link has 136 reviews with 10 % negative! Champion,Honda have thousands of reviews with much lower negatives.... Just sayin,best....
On Amazon there are many sellers, not just the pulsar store. Plus eBay and Walmart and more. Sometimes its more of the seller who is the issue or sure there are bad units from any manufacturer just like the response on here a few minutes ago from someone buying a new eu2200i Honda and runs like crap right out of the box. It happens. That’s the problem is people look at one page, one post and make a decision. versus I have been looking at this generator responses reviews, asking people about it for about eight months.
Did I miss the output load test? Too much video time playing with decibel meter & propane leak tester and not enough video time talking about the actual generator.
I will do the load test on a different video. So many care about noise…how loud…how loud?? So figured I would give some footage on how loud it is. Which its not. But also most any gen performs great when 60 degrees. 95 degree days are for load and stress testing. But i have tested many others and shown these same units perform well, have a clean sine wave, and run up to spec loads. But you shouldn’t be running it at full loads anyway. If you are you need a bigger generator.
That’s not entirely true anymore. Maybe 15-20 years ago but Honda figured out products that last for ever doesn’t make money. These figures have been gone over before. Hence the saying goes, are you going to but a new transmission into a vehicle with 275k miles? Or is it time to move on? Unless it’s a Toyota 4 runner….those run for ever 😂
Data for which part? The Toyota ..? Or the generators…. Which doesn’t matter because if you read enough comments from my page, several other RUclipsr pages, thousands of reviews and comments dig into bringing sales of units and more you can gather a lot of info. If you spend about several hundred hours in data search you to can find the answers. Oh talking to people while out camping and more also provides lots of good info. I will leave it at that. And yes the 4 runners run for ever lol
First off how do you know it's not best selling right now?? 2nd chill with the honda stuff they are over priced for what!! Predator has already showed it can be done with out bending over their customers for a 2200 generator.
I have had this generator for about 6 months. It has been outstanding - No regrets with the purchase. Runs equally excellent on both propane and gas.
Thanks for the feed back…..how many hours..?
@johnnysweekends Not many, around 40 so far. Will do a followup video soon once I get more time on it.
@@MR_Garage definitely interested in updates. Only drawback seems to be small fuel tank compared to some of the other options.
Awesome glad it’s working for ya. And thanks for the feedback. 😀👍🏼
👍🏼😀👊🏼
thanks My question was going to be Can you run the Rv AC on this generator. Thanks
Just note some literature doesn't reflect the proper
amount of oil. They take 15.8 ounces. I use a magnetic dip stick. I think I will sell my pulsar 2200 and use that money to get a fourth unit. They are great backups to a larger system.
Awesome! Thanks for the feedback. I like this unit a lot. Simple and perfect for 2500 watt loads and less. Does great at 1800!
@@busterhyman6633 exactly the comment I was looking for! Thanks for the info.
Bought the leak detector for my self and children to stay safe thanks 15$ on Amazon during Black Friday week
Great Review!!! I did the same research and came to the same conclusion. Purchased the Pulsar dual fuel and I am very pleased with it.
Thanks for the feedback 😀👍🏼👊🏼
Hutch mountain solved that problem with my Honda.
@@rebellucy6200yeah for another $250 kit
Agree come on Honda a dual fuel is needed from the factory…!
Did you install it Lucy, just gathering data
I can’t complain even the maxpeedingrods 3500 and new Mxr units should do good as well since it has the same engine. 👍🏼
Isn’t there an eco feature on the Honda that makes it quieter?
@@Sanity586I think it runs slower and quieter on eco mode but I should let Johnny answer that.
Interesting on the fuel strainer. Thanks for the heads up. Although most all these portable units are floating neutral.
Thanks for another great review! I have a Pulsar GD4000BN. Haven't used it a lot yet but it's good to know you're impressed with it as I am.
The 145 engine dinking power made for several of the units is proving so far to do pretty darn well.
Well, thanks to your detailed review about Pulsar generators I am buying one to send overseas.
That's a cool little generator for a camper with the dual fuel and accessories thanks for the video
You bet 👍🏼 😀
The predator gens have been reliable for the last few years that I’ve owned them. It all depends on your level of maintaining them.

I never knew to check Wal Mart for generators, they have the Camo all gasoline model on sale for 499, I think Amazon is 200 dollars more.
@ do you want dual fuel ? Electric start or just pull start ?
@@tristanschaper281 I mean ideally I would love to have dual fuel with electric/remote start capability. I would also really love to have easy access doors to the oil change and air filter that don't require unscrewing multiple screws on a big panel. I'm also really hoping to not have to spend more than $500. This week seems like the best week to figure this out because of all the Black Friday deals.
The gas detector is a good idea.
Thanks.
I bought the gas version and I love it!
That one and the maxpeedingrods are the same. People love this design. Compact and enough power for a large AC unit
I did the load break in as you suggested. I also used the Honda 10-30 oil for the oil changes.
@robertburckert8567 you can save some money and not use the Honda labeled oil. Honda doesn’t make oil but they do make stickers..👍🏼
Wow, you should share more videos like this, very informative.
You got it…defiantly more stuff on solar and gens coming!
The Maxpedingrods are looking good, but this came up on sale this morning for $510 minus a $30 coupon - $480, I couldn't resist it.
That’s an awesome price!!
Keep up the great videos buddy.
Thanks 👍🏼👊🏼
I like the idea of an external fuel tank, but could you do a video on how to connect a generator to a very large propane tank? Thanks Johnny!
Ill have to look into that since I dont have a large tank to use anymore. 🤔
Great video, thanks. Looks like I might have to rethink the dual fuel Champion 2500 that I have.
Walmart has it for $529. Super tempted.
How plumb up Rv with quick connect propane fitting? My rv has two tanks front valve selects tanks draw. Is there reg in that?
Your RV has regulators onboard after the tank switch valve which there should also be a T. You need to plumb in after the regulator.
So then it’s AC charging and pass through
Butttttttt……….stay tuned 😁
@@johnnysweekends Thanks. I watched a bunch of your other videos this afternoon (just found your channel which is a great resource!) and jumped on the good deal for the Pecron E3600LFP (thanks for the additional discount!). The Pulsar seems like a good compliment to run things while charging thanks to the pass thru capabilities.
I was going to go down the Victron route (have one BB GC3) but you’ve convinced me on the benefits (speed and cost) or going down the solar generator route.
Thanks for all the great content!
@erictheobald3861 awesome and welcome to the channel 😀👍🏼
A combo of solar and a generator for your needs is a perfect setup
You’ll need this amzn.to/4asJFLm
what app was on the phone monitoring power in/out ? thanks & maybe include a link in ur descrip..
It’s a Ecoflow app for my power system.
I think I added links in description and comment sections for the generator and a couple other products ..🤔
High volume regulator amzn.to/3vZQfdT
Maybe take regulator to Home Depot and build your setup but something like this. Brass T:amzn.to/3OwtKnr
3/8th hose amzn.to/492dfrp
Or if you have a propane outlet for a BBQ you can use those for the small to medium generators most times.
What is a win for pulsar 4000w dual fuel gd400bn is can also run nature gas without any conversion to nature gas, just hook up nature gas and run.
Ok I’ll try it !!!
@@johnnysweekends select propane, put on run, eco mode off, and pulls. I was surprised that is can run on natural gas directly no regulator at all.
Thanks
@robinbrumfield9288 yes this one does! amzn.to/4aFMppm
I don’t know about the other newer model which doesn’t have much reviews yet
Great video! Thanks so much.
You’re welcome 👍🏼😀
great video! is the gas cap thread on the polsar the same as the Honda EU2200?
No unfortunately it won’t work but the Honda already has a fuel pump inside so you can run a extension kit easy
I just found this review, and thanks! Thinking seriously about getting this generator over the comparable Champion. What type of gas fitting is on the Pulsar? It’s not a quick connect it seems. Did you have to make a custom hose to connect to your RV’s propane port? Thanks !
3/8th flare super common 👍🏼
@@johnnysweekends thanks for the information!
Thanks for the excellent review. Your facts convinced me the Pulsar is for us. BTW, what's the red device attached to your turning point hitch? Thanks...
It’s the Anderson hitch coupler. Although I’ll be moving to the newer updated model.
Can to hook it up to a another generator that's 2500 watts and run them both 30amp or do they both need to be the same brand?
They can be different brands as long as they are both inverter and kinda close in power. Something like 30 amp total and 15 amp total I think is too much of a spread. 30 and 25…25 and 20amp or so would be better.
do you have the issue with spark plug boot grommet doesn’t fit in the hole?? my spark plug boot slips off after hours of running because the grommet isn't going into the hole.
No, someone else mentioned this and not sure why some have a metal boot.
Mine is rubber insulated. Which is how most are. So not sure why yours is like that.
How long does it run off a 20 lb propane tank?
Does the gas detector, detect propane, and natural gas?
Yes like over 20 different gases !! 👍🏼
Can you parallel the Pulsar to the Honda EU2200i? Great video!
@judsimonson9087 sorry, hard to know sometimes what’s a attack or not 😂

@@johnnysweekends I added oil. Fuel switch is on propane.
I can’t find a way to bleed air and I don’t see and eco switch on the unit. I’m on run.
The problem is with the propane regulator that was sent with the generator.
@lindafadner4319 ahh interesting. Well not uncommon for regulators to be bad on arrival for anything…

@jasonbroom7147 the Honda is fine, but you have to compare several factors.
Price…..pulsar
Power output…pulsar
Types of fuel…pulsar
Larger tank and longer run times…pulsar

Can you get enough parts to rebuild both…Honda wins…

Read several forums, group pages and more.

I would say your AC has some issues. It should easily run and start that unit. The capacitor or condenser may need replacement or the whole unit needs to be serviced. I would load check if you can from a AC plug. Or have someone look at it
why no one talks about fuel consumption?ok we get it runs on both fuel source but whats the capacity on tank how long it last.
Because lots of variables
Loads, temps, altitude so results can vary a lot
Honda isn't worth consideration anymore.
Nice generator. 👍👍
You talk to enough people and they agree.. the eu2000i was the last of the Mohicans
I thinks that’s Bad is why I ask.
has any one looked at the Wen DF360iX. or the Champion 2500 watt dual fuel compared to the Pulsar.
Not once in over 20 years has a Honda product ever failed me including generator, lawn mower, or vehicle, why would I choose an unknown for a few $?
I wouldn’t touch any newer Honda vehicle from about 2016 up
Toyota for the win 🥇
Have You reviewed the ALP generator? If you do I would Love it! If you would test it at 25% load. 50% load 75% load and 100% load. All of the people that I've been looking for review for do not test it at 100% load. That makes me mad
I have been curious about it
gasoline vs propane, what is more efficient?
If you are looking at only what is more efficient or has more power then gasoline is. It has more btu’s per gallon.
But depending where you live propane can be much cheaper so then propane may be a better option. Not to mention cleaner burning and better for everything all around
Sniff Sniff I am in Ca. so I cannot have these shipped to my house. I have to drive to Az. and pick it up.
So an added expense again.
think he did and it beat Honda 3000. Look up his video
I ran this thing at 75% to 80% for 3 days it works. Yes, it's a Chonda but for the money I'm very happy.
@busterhyman6633 thanks again for the update 👍🏼
Where to find the pulsar?
Here amzn.to/3A7OoWG
Affiliate link
According to the Wal-Mart web site it only has a 4.5 hour run time on its one gallon gas tank? That’s an issue…
Get the extended run kit. Problem solved
Honda is only 4 hrs ….
But you have to make sure you pay attention to what load they are giving you that spec.
Honda @50% load 4 hrs roughly
Pulsar @50% load 4.5 hrs roughly
👍🏼
What is that app on your phone? Did I miss something?
My power bank in the rv
Typical household hammer to the spark plug will quiet down that non Honda brand., So don’t run it near other campers unless you have a stockpile of plugs.
where u at?
Quartzsite AZ
Who does actually make it. Pulsar ? Maxpeedingrods?
They are all the same, different names and colours. Or are they just sold to companies and they put their own brand name on it?
Dinking power/GenMax makes the engine and most of it
Only 1 110 vokt outlet ? That's a big negatory for me.
You can add a pigtail if you want dual plugs. Either way you only get 20 amps with a single or dual plug. So easy fix if you wanted to
I like your vids,But,you lost me saying this is a "best selling" gen!!
Thanks for your response,still subcrribrded.
No problem…and thanks 👍🏼😀👊🏼
Did I miss the output load test? Too much video time playing with decibel meter & propane leak tester and not enough video time talking about the actual generator.
I will do the load test on a different video. So many care about noise…how loud…how loud?? So figured I would give some footage on how loud it is. Which its not. But also most any gen performs great when 60 degrees. 95 degree days are for load and stress testing. But i have tested many others and shown these same units perform well, have a clean sine wave, and run up to spec loads. But you shouldn’t be running it at full loads anyway. If you are you need a bigger generator.
He owns a Honda for backup 😅
I hardly use a generator at all now but when I do I prefer to use propane. The Hondas just sit. Only use now to show sound difference.
it loud
Compared to what with the same size power output and engine size?
It All comes down to build quality and longevity
The Honda will outlast that pulsar 20 times over. That's why the big cost difference.
Do you have data to back that up? Thank you
@johnnysweekends
That product screen covering 1/3 of the screen is going to get me to unsubscribe. Irritating AF.
Just show us about sound and power meter reading. No product connection test. Really a waste of time video my view.
Ill be doing a follow up video because some of my test stuff was at home
It is not the best selling generator nor is it as reliable as a Honda
“One of the best”………according to the ratings on Amazon.
First off how do you know it's not best selling right now??
2nd chill with the honda stuff they are over priced for what!! Predator has already showed it can be done with out bending over their customers for a 2200 generator.
In your research what have you found to be a best seller in this class?
His momma when she brought him his sammich in the basement.
I could, be wrong.
@@BrokeGuyBBQ not Honda lol we don't use baby gens
The Honda is half as noisy!
The pulsar has an obnoxious noise tone to it. That noise is a deal breaker
