I always assume they’re on some form of public transportation when they say something like that.
They're usually on trains and their society frowns on public phone convos.
A lot of new cars also have speech to text features to avoid that issue as well

For some people, it depends on how long ago things happened and what their memory is like. It's not uncommon to forget certain things especially if it didn't involve them directly. My mom's memory is bad and sometimes forgets people names or either their first or last name and other details. She doesn't have dementia or anything. A part of it is because of the abuse she endured, she has blocked some things out.
Anita definitely takes after her mother and both are nasty. It's unsettling that there are people like them in real life!

All too often the characters in these are chronic levels of stupid. If the story doesn't work without the characters being so unrealistically stupid then they should consider changing how it's written
