The signal fires were not villages burning but other signal fires. Canute was demonstrating that he COULD do that if he needed to.

At 13:05 Eadric is deserting the war by signing a seperate peace treaty with Canute on the side not actually physically running away
The signal fires were also just that, signals. Canute has become quite an extremist but he wouldnt sign off on the mass burning of civilians

"he wouldnt sign off on the mass burning of civilians" He would, and he does - but he tries to avoid it as much as possible. As he said earlier in the episode "We ravaged this countryside."

We need to know what happened to Canute if we want to continue his development 😉Also, Canute did not burn the villages, but made signal fires across all of Eadric's land basically simultaneously to tell him that if needed, he'll do so and there's literally nothing he would be able to do to stop him. Canute just delivered one of the biggest flexes in anime history in the calmest most elegant way.

The thing where Cnut is talking to eadric is very weird because it was very much not uncommon for royalty to go into exile for various reasons and then return later after raising an army, I remember hearing about such several times while learning about this general period though none come to mind immediately and there’s a sense to it tactically, one must therefore consider whether Cnut himself would do the same were he in Æþelræd’s position which I think he would because he’s not stupid, unfortunately for Eadric Cnut is rather charismatic leaving him to fumble in an attempt to articulate, resulting in Cnut leading the whole conversation.

just because something happens regularly doesn't stop it from being shameful or reflecting poorly on the person doing it.

@@virtualmartini only if he loses which he does but not the point, it’s only perceived badly if he loses, usurping the throne is only perceived negatively if you don’t succeed, had he won he would instead be praised for making a smart decision, ultimately it’s judged on a case by case basis based on whether they were successful or not.

Witenagemot is the king’s council which, in that period, played an important part in electing successors from the royal family as well. To become king of England (or even before England was united), the Witan (or witenagemot) had to deem said individual capable of ruling and leading the kingdom first, or they may elect next kings based on the former king’s approval or will. The Witan was consisted of noblemen, ealdormen, bishops and those kind of people. So it was not automatically like, okay you are the eldest son, thus you ascend the throne. If, let’s say, the king’s brother was more fit to rule, there’s a good chance that the crown might fall to the brother instead of the son, if the Witan willed it.
