White Christmas is definitely my favorite Black Mirror episode. I loved how elegantly all the stories connected and Jon Hamm was was amazing as Matt. I love that it features prominently in this video. Props to pointing out the foreshadowing about the snoring, by the way. Have to admit I didn't catch that. Oh, and as for the newest season: "Crocodile" is without a doubt my favorite episode of the bunch. Anyone else loved that one?
Well but I like to not know what the twist will be. I like to just sit back, get involved in the story, relate to the main character and then just all of the sudden get my mind blown. That's kind of the whole point
There are two episodes in season 4 that don't have twists; Crocodile and Metalhead. They are very engaging and well-made episodes, but they ended exactly how they looked like they would end from early on. Maybe I missed something, or maybe I'm just too used to expecting a twist ending.
Crocodile had two twists. At tje end of the episode, we found out that the baby was blind that she killed and that animals also have the option to have memories saved
I thought Metalhead had a twist. The whole time the I thought they broke into that factory for life saving medicine and in the end they were risking their lives for a teddy bear. It’s not a big one but it said a lot about humanity.
@@ItsLyndon although I still say that Crocodile had a little bit of a plot hole. They seemed to establish early on that the machine just entirely on its own didn't work to clearly output memories for a 3rd party operating the machine to see. There needed to be someone operating the box who could guide the person along thru what was being rehashed to get a truly clear view of the memory, there's an amount of give and take. I don't see any person being able to do that with hamster. But maybe i'm just being nitpicky.
*mild non-explicit spoiler ahead for season 4* I’m just so happy we got another San Junipero type episode this season. With a happy ending for the characters I was just so relieved 😊 The twist was just so horrible and sad.
I think this is the reason Man Against Fire is probably the episode I dislike the most, it's just too obvious, anyone could read right through those clues. I doubt anyone could ever, ever read through White Bear or White Christmas, some of my favorite eps of the show.
white bear I thought something was off because it was too one note, a survival story played too straight. White christmas I saw most reveals coming a few minutes before they are confirmed. Still a great episode.
ChubbyChecker182 grumpy and quite anxious with a melancholic temperament knob, from his own admission. That's why he got so much insight, and why Black Mirror is totally bingeable, and even soothing, if you're already melancholic.
This channel never fails to make amazing and thoughtful content!! The amount of effort and time you must put in to write each video's script and find the proper clips, wow. Thank you for what you do.
I never thought of Black Mirror as a 'twisty' show, that seems to me the least interesting part of the show. But as you've proved it's only a the hook as you did in this video essay to talk about larger themes and issues. Thanx as always, great video! Waldo 2019 (afterTrump's impeachment)
I think Hang the DJ was also a pretty happy ending. The people leave the simulation, finding out that they're soulmates, and leave together. Also, there is a bit of hope in The Black Museum that the mother from the second story might get a new body that will allow her to express more than two emotions, and the mother from the framing device might get the same, or she might just be able to rest in peace.
I think we all falling the trap. We should not glorified humanity.Humanity is just the way it is. this show is not about corruption of the humanity, its just about humanity. It is about our faces behind masks its about the things that we are capable of doing to others when the circumstances are right or power is given.
I love how insightful you guys are!! Can we donate in crypto like Digibyte? It would be faster, cheaper, easier and more secure. You can just post your receive address at the bottom of your videos and we can donate to that.
According to creators of the show. The title "Black Mirror" comes from the literal black mirror on our phones and electronic devices. It is not a philosophical metaphor for the reflection of darkness of society as stated in the video.
The twists in black mirror (at least the episodes" Shut up and dance", and "White Bear") make me feel guilty and stupid at the same time! To think the show fooled me into feeling sorry for a villain and root for them: Twice in the same season! Talk about unreliable narrator! Damn!
There's nothing wrong with just letting the show do it's thing and not TRYING to spot twists. I always have way more fun just letting the show tell a story and take me along for the ride.
I actually figured out Shut Up and Dance based on his reaction to his sister taking his computer and how he talked to the little girl. I knew there had to be a twist so it couldn't be that simple.
I still don't think I'll be able to guess the twist and I don't think I want to! No episode of tv has ever shocked me more than "White Bear", yikes. Bring on season 4!!
The "the baby was not his" twist in white christmas wa the most obvious twist in Black Mirror imo... You could understand that like 20 minutes before it is "revealed"...
6:35 it's said in this video that in Entire History of You; it turned out the baby wasn't his. Did I happen to miss this somewhere? In fact, during the final confrontation, close to the beginning of it, the wife seems appalled when the husband asked if the baby was his. Later on she assures him that she used protection (although its possible this was a lie, since she never showed him the footage of the condom being put on.). My question is where do we find out the baby wasn't his?
KingofHearts i think it's implied, because from what i remember, when the guy (liam, right??) insisted on seeing the memory of her with the other dude to check if they used one, she tried to delete it. i feel like that implies that she was lying and the baby is likely to be the other guy's and not liam's.
It is only implied as we hear the playback from the encounter she was trying to delete, and there is clearly no condom. It's not exactly a DNA test, as that one encounter wasn't necessarily the one that caused the baby. Either way, their relationship wasn't happy and both she and the baby are gone from his life at the end of the episode.
He mentions they were struggling to get pregnant and were trying for a period of time but with no luck. It’s implied that she didn’t use a condom when she had sex with her ex. So we can infer that the baby isn’t his, because why else would the writers bring up them trying and failing to have a baby and her not using a condom with her ex? It’s clear that he had fertility issues and her ex didn’t, which is why she got pregnant.
Once the evidence is out there, Brooker can't take it back and say, "what I meant to say is..." Communication is collaborative. Once the episode is out in the world, it's not only his anymore. If someone can point to evidence in the episode to support a theory and it helps them make meaning, what Brooker says now is irrelevant. But obviously, you're acquainted with Death of the Author and semiotics and so on. I know I'm preaching to the choir.
Black Mirror is that amazing show I want to recommend to everyone, but then have to give a disclaimer that the first episode is about a man having sex with a pig.
Sweet Caroline94 if you have seen all three seasons of black mirror, then this episode of ScreenPrism, won't take anything away. It's more of a refresher course, to get you excited for the upcoming season.
Honestly San Junipero was my least favorite episode. I thought it was going to be a time travel related story for the first half but the end made me so angry because they actively chose the path of the empty hedonistic eternity which is portrayed throughout by the lifers. It's happy ending didn't feel earned.
I may be wrong, but I think that's also the point. We don't know if this was really the right 'good' ending. With consideration, it becomes more and more problematic. But many of us want to feel good about them...
That could be the case but my emotional connection to them never gelled. Especially right before the end when she snaps over a comment about starting a new life and forgetting their old ones. Then she goes through the process anyway.
My point is your sense of discomfort and disapproval of them is intentional. As said by one of the actresses, "I think it is joyful, but there’s all these little undercurrents communicating that there’s darkness under this joy.” Darkness partially because this is all a supposed experience kept in a databank. The wild abandon of the ending is not *necessarily* positive, its just much of the audience is made to hope it is, due to the life circumstances of the characters. It is euthanasia, but is it?, but it is, but...
I feel like the episode is very good at giving the characters a happy ending, while making us aware of the dark undercurrents. They'll last forever in that thing, so they'll outlive their mutual love. They'll have other relationships, but they might eventually feel empty and tortured by this eternity... Or maybe it doesn't last forever: the data is erased by a malfunction of the servers. Maybe the company just wants to delete some data to make fresh space. And all of these experiences are just erased, thousands of people with all their memories dies a second time. Overall the show is great at keeping the gate open for further implications that bring nuance to the story.
Blocking people a la black mirror, regardless of the reason, is messed up. Justifying that the kid wasnt his doesnt make it better. In fact its worse because not knowing was a needles torture. He could have moved on.
Okay the "Shut up and Dance" twist was painfully obvious from the very first minutes where Kenny interacts with a child. That scene was shot so ominously.
Yeah, it was a bold move on Brooker's part to make that the pilot. He's described it as a sort of "litmus test" too weed out the people who find his writing too nihilistic and/or depressing.
Technology doesn't make it harder to empathize with "people at the other end" of it. During the Obama administration, when the white house wasn't gridlocked by scandal, there where some papers released that showed a drone strike went bad and killed like 15 innocents. Crocodile. Motherfucking crocodile. Fucked up.

Please do a seperate Analysis of San Junipero I love that Episode so much! (Btw I love your Channel and you are doing amazing work!)
Maite L. P. Yes pleaseee
I seconded that. One of my favs episodes!
After I finished watching it I thought, "I like this episode..."

Which episode did you mean?
Black museum?
Hang the DJ?

Most likely Hang the DJ. It has the most similarities to San Junipero

Kylee J I'm sure they intended it to be a double-entendre of sorts. Both can be correct.
The reason this seasons twist are so predictable is because all 3 seasons have twists and so we’re used to having twists in this show
