  • Congratulations, you have clicked on the best FALLOUT video on RUclips !
you should totally click down here btw:
Hey everyone ! I hope you are all doing well. I haven't posted a video in quite a while, and I wanted my first video back from hiatus to be pretty decent. I'd say we achieved that here ! In this video, we'll go over the Fallout Amazon TV show, which came out a couple of weeks ago, and that I bingewatched through the two days from release. It was really great, and I enjoyed my experience a ton. However, I did see a lot of people criticize Fallout on multiple counts, and I think it's quite unfair to do so, so I decided to make a video tackling the main issues people have with the show while also touching upon the points that make the show great in my opinion.

The problem is some things in the show seems retconning the games and that needs explaining. In example people cry about the fall of shady sands in 2277 at the chalkboard. My only problem is Shady Sands being placed in LA although LA should be Boneyard based on games. I dunno maybe Shady Sands moved from their original region to Boneyard. This needs further explanation by the showrunner.

    • @a.graham_arts7359
      @a.graham_arts7359 28 дней назад

      @@ngybridsimple explanation is this.
Fall of shady sands = 2277
      Current year = 2296
Lucy age = early 20's (lets say 21)
Shady sands nuked when lucy is likely around 5-6 years old judging on flashbacks.
      21-5 = 16
      2296 - 16 = 2280 when shady sands was nuked.
Also because lucys age is not confirmed this could also have happened as late as 2285 if she was 26 at the time of the show.
Also a simple map released of the "in show area" shows shady sands actually quite a ways north of the boneyard the scene was more for perspective but canonically it still lies a few miles north of the boneyard.

Okay, hold up. Those "Govermint" people weren't NCR, and neither were the raiders who invaded the vault. There are shown to be very few truly loyal NCR holdouts, like the Griffith Park Observatory. The others are just living in the power vacuum left after the decapitation of the NCR.

  • @SeriousPinoyGamer

I honestly think the show was able to get the Fallout feel. It managed to capture the feel of a post-apocalyptic adventure with dark humor. The writing seems to be a reference of and inspired by former Fallout games but it actually has proper cohesion and makes sense because the writers actually care about it unlike some live action adaptations which decided to ignore the lore and source materials. My only concern with this show is the location of Shady Sands being in the Boneyard (Unless they reveal there are actually multiple towns named Shady Sands within California in Season 2)
People hating on this show just because it's live action and written by Bethesda are far too deep in their own bias.

Not that I mind having badass female characters beating the snot out of their male counterparts. That said, I liked Lucy a whole bunch I adored how she still stuck to her beliefs but made the necessary adjustments in order to survive. I'm glad to see that Maximus got all the credit he deserved, as that actor is really good at playing someone with the *idiot savant* perk, lol. Something that should be mentioned, one of the restrictions for the TV series was "don't canonize an ending" Aka until Bethesda makes it official which ending is canon the show can't do it. So yea the fate of Caesar even though 90% of the endings and it's variations kill them off or kill him off. The show can't show who actually won the battle of hooverdam until Todd Howard essentially approves of it. Not to mention some of the discourse seems to mostly come from people that skipped the dialogue and never questioned anything in games especially NV. Like so many people I've seen claim the NCR is the best faction because they gave the most quests and really don't question the logic of why would a well oiled military and government need a mercenary to do things like donate medical supplies or rescue soldiers.

@@VernierChannel No, that's...literally canon that October 23rd, 2077 was the date the bombs fell as you can see that the world of Fallout was more like retrofuturism, and the show takes place in 2296, 219 YEARS after the bombs fell in 2077.

    • @BUMMY105

@@therobustempyrean1436 there's some small nit picky details like how the Nuka Cola bottles used in the show are suppose to be rare prototypes sold in specific locations, BoS ranking, Vaults 31-33 being REALLY close to The Cathedral's location, etc etc. They're not grand, just small nitpicks.
Also, I don't really consider the destruction of Shady Sands to be at any point a retcon, especially with conformation with Lil' Toddy Hoddy that the big boom happened after the events of FNV. During the events of New Vegas, it has stated multiple times how much the NCR had over extended their military to the point that they couldn't even protect key vital positions like the Hoover Dam and the roads outside the 188 trading post, and were often overly reliant on Brahmin Barons to keep their operations running. if a Mr House ending or Independent Vegas ending were to be the reveal for S2, then the Fall of Hoover Dam would've sparked an avalanche of mutinies and distrust towards the NCR Federal Government. Most likely the events of 2277 was the earliest agreed record to the citizens of Vault 4 that lead to the collapse of NCR power-- which resulted in the failure to stop the annihilation of their capital.
The Chalkboard pointing to the mushroom cloud would've been just an indicator to a result rather than a cause, As Maximus and Lucy are hinted at the show to being in their 20's -- making the event fairly recent in their history. There is really no need to put a year or date to when the big boom happened, since the people who witnessed it are still alive and know full well what year it is -- similar to how we call the events of September 11, 2001 simply as "9/11", since there's still a large generation of people that were capable of digesting the disaster and are able to talk about it without writing the dates down. The NCR is fairly present in the show, but exist in small groups due to the destruction of what was essentially the Federal Government. Moldaver is probably one of the multiple different Generals or Politicians that took control of the surviving NCR Army in California following the collapse, but that's all speculation until the show further hints to the state of the NCR.
I see it similarly to how we see the Fall of Rome. We saw Rome get fucking suplexed and folded by German invaders in 476 CE, but Rome and the Roman Senate continued operations after the fact, and it wasn't until a couple decades later from the loss of key economically important territories and poor maintenance to both the military and their territories had the city completely capitulate.

    • @janetd5121
      @janetd5121 29 дней назад +3

@@BUMMY105 To add to Rome thing long before it finally fell it had gotten so bad in the region economically they created the new imperial capital in Constantinople as most of the empires wealth was in the eastern half so they moved the capital there. No doubt the show creators took this as inspiration as the sign in the show says Shady Sands was the first capital of the NCR, meaning there was and is a second one.

Re: Race mixing in the 1950s.
I think you're downplaying the issue a little bit, but hat the people making this comment are still also wrong.
Basically Fallout is retro-futurism based on what people in the 1950s would think the future looked like according to the pulp scifi and B movies of the time. Genuine 1950s stuff wouldn't have mixed races unless it was a plot point. That is is California or the US has nothing to do with it. The Supreme Court case that made interracial marriage okay wasn't until 1967. It was ironically enough called the Loving case if you want to look it up. There were mixed race marriages before that because not all states prohibited them. But they weren't common and they were frowned upon.
    HOWEVER:
    1) Fallout isn't set in the 1950s. Even the bomb drop was set in 2077.
    2) Being retro-futuristic doesn't mean you need to incorporate retro-racism. I've never noticed racism among the Fallout NPCs before except towards people who were irradiated (ghouls, super-mutants). Fallout has fantasy racism, not real racism,.
    3) With all the inbreeding in the vaults and small populations, in 200 years trapped with such a small population, everyone is coming up to the surface some shade of milky brown at the end of that time.
So if Fallout doesn't want 2077 to have been racist (or maybe just racist against the Chinese who are the stated enemy so it's kind of comedy racism at this point), then I'm good with it. It's not a matter of being woke. It a matter of them never really writing stories about racism using real races. I'm okay with them if they think the future of America is a melting pot.
What's the reason we can't imagine that people would have managed racial equality by 2077, other than the fact that this is retro-futurism so they think it should reflect the actual 1950s rather than the better 1950s scifi writers would have dreamed of?

Writing is key along with understanding the source material. It's true with book, comic book, and video game adaptations. Yes, it had It's check box of diversity. And normally, I'd turn it off for that. But the story and characters were so well written, that it wasn't as noticeable. Lucy is the perfect example of HOW to write a "strong female". She has the hero's journey, so to speak. She is believable and adorable. She is a sweetheart at heart that in the right situation, will do what must be done to survive. She isn't bad ass from the jump, and LEARNS to do what she does.

As for world not being able to rebuild itself, to me I justify it with there *ALWAYS* being conflict among the factions who all try to do the right things the wrong way. So basically, war never changes, so whatever is re-built was also destroyed. Again and again.
New Vegas looks overrun with Death Claws, meaning all endings *could* be canon and skit hit the fan in between. It didn't bother me at all. Same with the overall writing; it could be serious when it had to, but enough of the cheesy lines and silliness that I think is required. If this writing style was used in The Wire, I'd be more concerned... Pregnant lady with a fork in her eye shooting up the place to the tune of happy 50s music? Doesn't get more Fallout than that.
"Being woke" argument nowadays is just ridiculous, and not just for this show. It's one of the most woke franchises there ever was. The whole point is being political satire and criticizing large corporations and what runaway capitalism leads to; woke means "being aware of social injustices" touching many camps. They always loved it for what it was, but nowadays they've been told to "hate the woke". And yet we're supposed to be the sheep. The projection is just insane. Guess I'm just woke and proud about it then.
When The Ghoul is introduced, they mention "...from California, where you're originally from", as being kinda far away. Meaning there is a lot of travel time in the show we don't get to see. So, fast travel? 😂We do notice skill checks, perks, and VATS being used, so why not? Sure, it's weird to have in a real life show, but it still fits perfectly. And just like the stimpak, they don't need to explain it further - speculating in post is a major part of the fun.
Yeah, not everything is fleshed out or explained in the first season. Nor would I want it to be. NCR and Enclave is still around even if we so far haven't seen much of them. A "collapse" never means utter destruction, and not in a short amount of time. Roman empire took ages to "collapse", but Italy and Rome is still a thing last I checked.
If anything, the show and watching responses to it reminds me more of Daggerfall than anything produced later by Bethesda; all reactors pick up on different references that I never spotted. Like, how many spotted the reference to the "Legion"? In quotes for a reason. Similarly in Daggerfall; the world is so huge every gamers experience would be vastly different compared to the smaller Bethesda worlds where everybody gets to have very similar experiences where you've seen everything before.
I love the characters. All of them. I obviously expected character development and explanation as things went on for the main characters. But I didn't expect so much development for many of the side characters. I frigging love Norm and how he developed and where this is heading.
I went into this extremely skeptical, but ended up binging it all in a single seating and my jaw hurt from grinning all the way. Score? I'm giving it a 101 or 111... That's not to say I'm not afraid they're gonna mess up down the line. Some CGI looked a bit off at times, but not to the point of being really distracting from the story or fun, and we all know there is this thing called budget, so.

It seems weird the big brain nerd panels wanna shit all over the lore or the realism in it ,sure i can suspend my believe, its a show based on games ,it gives little tidbits of all the games ,im fine with the story they told using the references available.i understand it breaks some things but the rules are different for tv and games etc, batman was not comic book accurate it was still good.i see them trying to dive deeper into some things.i like how the ghouls need something to keep them from going feral,it makes sense to take something to keep thier brains from degrading more causing them to go feral, the "woke" cast didn't bother me at all .and i gotta say i love the fourth character norm and even liked the side quest to vault 4.i say sure it has it flaws but i had alot a fun watching it .even the stuff i didn't like was funny to discuss amoung a less serious crowd .

Well sadly despite how good this show is the hate was unavoidable. Why?
Simple. The SHEER toxicity of bethesda obsidian split within the fanbase. It mostly comes down to Bethesdas reputation as a company slowly going to sh*t over the last.... 15 years? Just watch "Fall of Fallout 76" with it's milions of views to realize that bethesda is slowly falling apart While at the same time being driven up the wall by gready shareholders.
Add to that less inspired writing and you have recipe for disaster.😑
To sum it up fanbase is split beetwen supporters of Obsidian and supporters of bethesda(people who are incrisingly known as gready, incompetent morons). As a result you get the francly abnormall AND absurde toxicity on display.
But the show is very good. It perfectly catches this Fallout vibe of dart humor, gory action, and intresting ever evolving factions and societies. 10/10👍

7:50 you responded a wrong argument with another wrong argument.
The bombs dropped in 2077, not 1977.
This society mirrors the 1950's in everything but technology, so it would be safe to assume it didn't fully resolve issues like this, but that was never presented in any fallout games, so you are right in that regard.
But people are going to use the fact that you presented the wrong dates to cast shade upon your opinion, so you should be careful when doing research for the video.
Like you said, it took you 5 minutes of googling to find that info, and yet you didn't take 5 minutes to search for the correct dates?
Don't take me negatively, I like your videos, but I want you to improve your channel, so I have to criticize you when you get something wrong.

Fun moment about Dane - in my home language we have genderfied verbs regarding to person's gender (or given gender to objects - we have general "it" for cases where gender is not clear or irrelevant but when touching humans, it's considered to be EXTREMELY derogatory and dehumanizing, so we have adopted "they/them" as default pronounce for unknown gender or non-binary people). And Dane is always referred as "they" in official translation, which made me believe that instead of being a transgender this person is non-binary.

I saw some critiques of people saying that the civilization should've been rebuilt on west coast by NCR - but it makes me think , if Lucy stepped out of the vault and instead of barren wasteland she saw a functioning society would that really be a good introduction to the Fallout world for TV audiences? Isnt it kind of selfish to rob viewers of that iconic first feel of fallout, like really, players in each game get to feel that "step out the vault" moment into a barren shithole of a wasteland, but for the show aimed at newcomers they wanted it to just jump ahead to a fully functioning civilization this time. I get the desire to move past the 'nukes and rubble' of post apocalypse, towards rebuilding , towards post-post-apocalypse, but imo S1 is not the place for it, maybe S2 should delve into those messages but not the introduction.

    • @VernierChannel
      @VernierChannel  Месяц назад +3

YES, absolutely true. The first time viewers and the playerbase are two different distributions of people, they aren't the same. You need a proper introduction to the world of Fallout for these people also

Excuse me, but in no way shape or form is it brought up in the show that the character of Dane is trans. The actor is, but the character ? We have no idea as they never mention it. Which leads to believe that people who bring it up as a sign that the show is "woke" have a problem with the actor and not the character and that says a lot about them.

lore and maps from the old games need to be respected to call it fallout, there are certain things that pull you out of the show, like the location of shady sands and how in the fight scene the power armor flaps around like hollow plastic (it is), but that can be fixed in s2, show them going to the og shady sands under a new name after SS relocated with the geck to build shady sands (bombed) in a more suitable place. get a rigid power armor model that just stays open for scenes where it is being interacted with. the brotherhood being religious makes perfect since since maxxons felt betrayed by the country they served, you cant be a military without a country, the brotherhood have no set teritory to make their own like the ncr, they chase tech and hide it away in bunkers literally worshiping it.

to be fair lore doesn’t really exist in fallout to a certain extent anyway it never really has besides certain things i think there should be a happy middle and although i haven’t seen the show so long as its not woke and it is in fact fallout enough for me all will be fine mostly.also you can not blame anyone for not likening it if its not lore accurate anymore than i can call fallout4 any more or less a fallout game it is technically a fallout game but not really i often keep the bar low for anything that’s trying to get the normal people involved as they are not gamers and thats fine but there should be a middle ground with this stuff no matter what it is.if its lord of the rings for example there need to be rings you get what i mean?overall though have not seen it yet but i hear it’s good and not in the fad kinda way and if it lets them keep making stuff for both hard core and normal fans i see that as a win in my book.
