Hi again Ron, that was a great adventure and what a find when you came across the tunnel entrance. The engineering for the bridge and the tunnel is extraordinary. This will be on my bucket list for the next time I get back to Blighty and visit my brother. He lives maybe 4-5 miles away from Tintern as the crow flies. Years go, I hiked from Chepstow to Tintern along the east side of the River Wye and along stretches of Offa's Dyke, and passing the Devil's Pulpit. Should have ended up crossing that railway bridge that you crossed over when you started. Except I took a wrong turn and ended up crossing the river at Brockweir., and probably almost doubled the mileage!!! It was getting quite dark and I was absolutely knackered by the time I hobbled into Tintern. But a fabulous walk none the less. And yes, it did take quite a while to live this down!!!! Take care.....Ian

Well done Ron yet another success, I was very surprised to see remains of sleepers given the Wire Works Branch line was taken up some time later than the 6th May 1945 the date it was taken out of use. The tunnel which is 182 yards long was on a sharp curve hence the reason it had refuges so close to the entrance. The other tunnel mouth was only 53 yards from the end of the river bridge and as has been mentioned by Kelvin Phelps is almost impossible to access. The Wire Works Branch was a financial disaster for the railway as the wire works had closed just before the line was completed it did however serve some mills in the area. Well done in finding the site of Wire Works Junction which is 66 yards in advance of the tunnel. From Wire Works Junction the line crossed the bridge as you stated then went on an incline to the wire works which was 1320 yards from Wire Works Junction. Just after the river bride on the Wire Works Branch a siding from a mill trailed in on the right approximately 880 yards from Wire Works Junction, between there and the Wire Works another trailing junction came in on the right from another mill the line terminating into two sidings at the wire works the second shorter one was a facing junction to the left before the Branch terminated. There was aground Frame at Wire Works Junction to the left of the facing point to control the Wire Works Branch no Signal Box was provided as traffic levels would not have warrened one. The 47 yard Black Morgan Viaduct which has three arches is 1628 yards from Wire Works Junction and could be a good place for you to visit on another walk. Take Care, Andrew.

@@ParkinsonsWalks Hi Ron, From what Kelvin Phelps said I think I would give the other tunnel mouth a miss, we don't want you injuring yourself, you're too valuable for that. I have been giving much thought to your comment about altering the format of your channel as mentioned last week. I am sure I speak for all your viewers when I say "If you need to change the format for yourself and in doing so keep the channel going for longer then do so". If that is the case then a suggestion I have is a 3 week cycle, A video, A flog, Film Club, that I think would work. I know from the comments viewers like things as they are but I think they would prefer your channel in a format that suits you rather than no Parkinson's Walks. Why not discuss it with HRH she may well have an opinion that is worth listening too. Take Care, Andrew.

Hello Ron, that was quite a hike...never mind "virtually", I actually felt it when you were going up that rocky incline...well done. Thanks for persevering, the stonework on that tunnel portal is a real credit to the stone masons and they did it all by hand. Every time I see one of your venues that points out how hard the workers must have had it but how they produced such superior results without computers, calculators or power equipment, it always impresses me to no end. Things here have gone from winter to summer in the past week...spring? oh that's something that stores elastic potential energy, it sure isn't a season around here anymore. The tunnel entrance nearest the river crossing isn't visible from the path above it. You would have to scale down through the thick bushes and tree to get to it. I certainly wouldn't advise it though as it is extremely slippy in places. I didanage to get to a spot where I could see the arch of the entrance though.

    Ron you’re a hero!
This video beats most thrillers hands down for edge of seat viewing and false jeopardy…I really didn’t think you were going to make the tunnel mouth…but was thankfully proved incorrect. I was so exhausted walking along that path and mountaineering alongside you that I had to pause, get a cuppa, and lie down for a bit.
I wonder if the rubble in the tunnel mouth was the remains of the original blocking off until a later date when it was realised that access might me required to monitor stability?
Also I think you may have been correct about the iron work being a means of holding a vertical pipe to the left hand side as there was the stub of a horizontal pipe just above the top bracket.
Anyway I’ve recovered now and hope you have too!

Yes the tunnel was blocked up for a period of time. I am from Tintern. We would run from our pitch near the abbey up and through the tunnel as part of our football training regime in the 1970’s. The tunnel was blocked up mid/ late 70’s. Obviously that has been taken down since.

Superb! I've walked that way a good few times, including to the tunnel entrance, and further on to the quarry and Tidenham tunnel. It's one of my favourites, but the rocky climb to the track above the tunnel with the Wye far below, is tricky in places, especially if wet. So well done! Once reached, the track affords a delightful walk to Brockweir, whence you can return over the bridge and along the former railway track, to Tintern. I did once attempt to descend the very steep bank to try and locate the other tunnel entrance above the Wye, but judged it rather too hazardous a task. No doubt others have succeeded. Your images of the inside of the tunnel were amazing, considering there is no access. But, wouldn't it be great to see it opened-up once again, with a footbridge over the Wye into Tintern station! I hope to visit the area later this year, and maybe have another look at that tunnel entrance. Thank you for reminding me what I have missed - largely due to the pandemic!
