Greatest third baseman I ever saw!
Over a seven year period from ages 30-36, Schmidt slashed .281/.387/.561, won 3 MVPs, 6 Gold Gloves, and 6 Silver Sluggers and was a World Series MVP.
For non traditional stats:
-His lowest OPS+ during that stretch was 149, the only year he didn't lead the league in OPS+
-Led all third basemen in Total Zone Runs twice and was top-4 four times
-Led the league in WAR once and was top-5 six times (for position players only, he led the league in WAR twice and was top-4 6 times)
Geez. Those barehanded grabs. I remember so many of those. The greatest!
My first glove as a little leaguer was a Mike Schmidt Rawlings. Loved him ever since.
Great Hitter. Great Fielder. Great 'stache!
Need more footage of Harry and Whitey calling the action. Need more footage of Schmidt‘s best plays. This has to be a small sample.
He was a awesome 3rd baseman .And was a great hitter .Remember watching him when I was a kid .He always giving a 100 percent when he played .
When I was a kid Schmidt was the best player in baseball
He is the greatest all-around third baseman in baseball history
Equal to Matthews offensively and his better defensively ✌️
Bunting down the third base line was not much of an option with Schmidt at Third
No disrespect meant for Brooks: Robinson was indeed the best defensive at third base over his career.
Or ditto Brett : He’s great f course - But his good medium power plus batting titles as great as all that is
Doesn’t outdo the combo of lots of walks and lots of homers of Matthews and Schmidt.
Schmidt was the GOAT but some of these highlights are meh
agree
You mean they aren’t INCREDIBLE? Capital letters and all?
The pop of fly is a great example.
But some of them are great.
Mike Schmidt and Bo Jackson were my favorite players growing up
Dude Bo Jackson played like 2 years
@@matthewmitcham5218 he played like 8 years bro
Mike Schmidt was great player for Philadelphia Phillies there nobody like him boy from Dayton, Ohio. Best😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
That first play was a good play, and it was very close. But it looks to me like Randolph was safe.
hands down the greatest third baseman in mlb history.
Brooks Robinson
@@samw2586Brooks was the best defensively, but not by a mile. At the plate, though, it's no comparison.
@@samw2586 Schmidts' career WAR is 28.6 higher than Robinson. Brooks doesn't even come close to being anywhere near his level, no one does.
Without question
@@samw2586 Offensively and defensively Schmidt is the best third baseman ever its no contest
Incredible Talent
I liked hearing Richie calling the play again. I haven't heard him in so long...
This highlight package was disappointing lol
To say the least
There were a few great plays in there, but a lot of the plays looked fairly routine.
Schmidt had bad knees, he couldn't make the acrobatic plays Graig Nettles and Brooks Robinson could make. This is the best you'll probably see from Schmidt. Schmidt did have a strong arm and good range, but he gets too much credit for his defense.
I remember a lot of these especially when he caught the kite against the Mets he made the bare handed play look easy obviously Michael Jack is the greatest all around 3rd baseman ever.
I’ve heard both Pete Rose and Jim Kaat say that Schmidt was the best athlete they ever played with.
The most incredible thing in this video is Dave Kingman trying to bunt for a hit
The sound effects 😂
One God made a ball player he made Mike Schmidt.
That first play the runner was safe
⚾️💥Schmitty is the GOAT🐐of 3rd basemen. Nobody is close!⚾️💥
When I was a little boy I used to get hik confused eith Chuck Norris.
He was the GOAT at 3rd
pretty good.
Michael Jack. Greatest 3rd Basemen an Phillies of all time..
2:13 Herandez should have tagged up at 3rd
half of these on artificial turf, another 25% are completely routine plays
If they were both 20 years old and in the same draft, who would you take between Mike Schmidt or Pete Rose?
And can also MASH!!!
Dave Kingman bunting?? Never seen that before. Good bunt, though.
Grew up in Pittsburgh in the 70s... hated Scmidt. Lived in Philly late in his career and began appreciating he was the best all-around third baseman in history. Ended up living in the same town as him in Florida now, see him out places from time to time. Fun fact tying in Philly fans insanity, late in his final season I'm at a game. Phillies ending bad season, won't make playoffs, losing late in the game. Schmidt pops up, out, and the Philly fans booed. Greatest 3B ever, greatest Phillie player ever, and they booed him for popping up late in a blowout game at the end of a bad season.
"...late in his final season I'm at a game. Phillies ending bad season..." Mike Schmidt retired late in May of 1989, not at the end of a bad season.
@@larrycopeland2413 Yes, and it was in 1988 his final real season. As I correctly stated, and also correct the Phils were deep in last place. Wow, how sad your life must be to be patrolling comment sections waiting for chances to say someone is wrong. Congrats - you can google but not comprehend. BTW... I lived downtown on Walnut St. Used to take the Broad Street train to the Vet after work. Often get there mid-game and box seats could be had for a few bucks. That game I was on the first level above the field by the visitor's dugout, front row on the railing with a buddy, drinking a Schmidts and eating a soft pretzel.
@@a1aprospects470 "Wow, how sad your life must be to be patrolling comment sections waiting for chances to say someone is wrong."
No, my life is not sad at all actually. Too bad you can't take someone pointing out that you were incorrect on something you said. For the record - I grew up in Chester County and remember the shocking day when Schmidt retired (i.e. no Google required). Have a nice day.
@@larrycopeland2413 His last full season was 88 and why you felt the need to try to prove someone wrong about their own memory... beyond lame. Feel bad for you. And chester county ain't philly. Much of it is another world. Your attitude wouldn't have lasted long in my part of philly.
@@a1aprospects470 I don't disagree that Schmidt's last full season was '88 - but that's not what you said in your original post. But whatever, it's ok.
Brooks by far
First play was a great play but if you pause and go frame by frame, the runner just beat the throw
He wasn’t always a great fielder. He worked his ass off to become a great fielder
Had trouble at the plate early in his career, too. Remember when he came up, lots of strikeouts and .190, .200. But once he warmed up, wow!
0:18 Randolph was safe.
Remember. Schmidt was elected as an All-Star starter after he retired.
He was definitely safe in the first one
Just looked at it frame by frame. He got the runner by one frame of video, based on the center field camera. But I can see why someone on the first base side would say the runner beat the throw. It was THAT close.
Who was running? Was he carrying a refrigerator and washer dryer combo on his back.
@@DjStorm-1 i love when idiots make comments like this, from the stands.
"manny mota doesn't say anything..." standing right there as first base coach, Mota didnt argue. but yes, we'll take your negativity as a serious point
It is super close, but yeah, I think he’s safe.
He wanted a triple play on the one at third
Nice play, but first guy was safe
Bartolo Colon could make all these plays
remove your head from your butt before joining a mature conversation
Really mike is Horse
Love Mike….but half of these are regular ass plays lol
Brooks Robinson the best
I Mike Schmidt my pants.
Ken Caminiti was the greatest 3rd Baseman ever!
Willie was safe first play 😂😂😂
No replay in those days.
That's an easy out call
Great player. This video isn't that good
Meh
Ron Santo was better for longer.
Not according to the statistics. Santo did have a higher career batting average, but Schmidt had more HR and RBI. He also had a higher on-base percentage, slugging percentage and OPS+. Schmidt played more games and more seasons, while edging Santo in fielding percentage .955-.954.
Schmidt was great, but I have to place Brooks Robinson over him in fielding. Hitting is another discussion.
Having watched his entire career, I still say Schmidt was the equal of Brooks Robinson as a defensive third baseman. But this video is a joke. Many of the plays shown were just routine plays and only a couple of them were among his greatest defensive plays.
richie allen was the phillies greatest third baseman mike schmidt was the greatest overrated third baseman and phillie
one of the best hitters, no doubt.....most over-rated defensive player ever?
