I was heavy into reviewing for a website at the time and we attended many a press event for several studios at the time of the format war. We had the chance to experience all of it. HD-DVD was not a higher quality product in the vidieo and audio presentation departments. The video was softer and slightly fuzzy in comparison while the audio lacked definition. Where the HD-DVD format did excel though was in the extra features and seamless interactive bonus content functionality. Blu-ray offered the best presentation of the main feature, and that's what people wanted most. You are mostly correct about Hollywood determining the outcome though. Pornography did definitely play a role, but it was far less influential than in previous battles for media supremacy.
They both had the same audio and video standards at the time... so any quality difference was on equipment or selection bias. Bluray had a theoretical capacity edge while HD-DVD had a lower manufacturing cost (both had plans to solve these respective issues). Bluray and HD-DVD were physical standards, not compression standards. HD-DVDs more open standard and had the possibility of both better and lower quality. That lower manufacturing cost actually was what "won" the war for porn in general, HD-DVD got most HD adult releases early and then came to Bluray after the Warner Brothers switch. Playstation won the war... Warner Brothers was releasing to both formats but the install base of the PS3 gave the justification needed to cut mastering and distribution costs by going with a single format. It's actually one of the few cases where porn didn't pick the winner, shrewd business tactics did. Sony took a larger than typical profit loss per unit on the PS3 while still charging more for it than almost any other console in history adjusted for inflation... but it payed off once manufacturing costs came in line as expected and they won the licensing fees on what will probably be the last physical spinning disk format.
