Great idea. Add a wifi module to the Arduino and you can get it to email you and alert, that your phone will alert you about via your email app. You could go overboard and add add a GSM SMS module and a cheap text only SIM card and have the box text you via SMS when a delivery is made. Off to watch more of your videos.
The HOA sucks anyways the price of wood is so expensive rite now it just won't work for us but it looks great and you have all the tools a person could ever need that's so awesome
Her name is Ms Bellum and I want one of these lol Joking aside I live in an area where package deliveries are almost impossible to successfully deliver because Porch Pirates always steal my packages before I get to them. A box like this would be really useful.
The box works, when they actually put the packages in the box. We're getting about 60% in the box and the rest on the porch. But at least some of our stuff is being protected.
Thank you very much! The LCD is a 2X20 LCD Character Display Module. Google that term and you will find a variety of display colors and dozens of places to buy them. Pretty easy to set up with an Arduino and fun to program too!
I like it. I would like to do something similar but install a magnetic latch - like used for security doors in a building. Control the latch with a NFC reader in my phone. Wave the phone by the door and it opens. Or tell Siri to open it.
@@AtomicDairy yeah in chicago these people are thevies. They will follow the delivery drivers and steal the packages even if a camera is pointing right at them.
No shorting. Each pair of LEDs uses a single resistor, so the two similar leads on each LED were soldered together. One twisted pair goes to the Arduino ground and the other goes to one of the digital pins. There are five pairs of eyes and each pair has it's own PIN, which allows us to individually control each of the five faces and make the eyes blink.
Yes, correct! These were the spares from the Alderaan Shard garage door project. The one we used in the video turned out to be bad but we swapped it for another after we figured out where the problem was.
I would have expected that the visual would indicate the number (or wight) of the packages: one package, the lowest pair of LEDs light up; two packages, the bottom two; etc Very nice work Did you consider security pocket-screws? Not because it's better, just because it's more complicated
We could do that. We thought of a few other things to add but decided to get the system built with the necessary pieces and then see which way it goes with usage. The box is 2x4 sticks so building another one will be practically free, but we will wait until we get some experience with this one.
Hello Ryan ,love your project , i have watched tour video a number of times , since radio shack is closed now , I wanted to know what is the name of the electronic gadget you made and where can I buy one like that ..I got 3 kids too 😂😂😂
That actually happens more often that I'd like to admit. At this point we are seeing about 60% of deliveries actually go into the box. The rest are either on the box or simply left on the open porch. So we're going to rebuild the box with something more obvious, and maybe make it talk to people about how packages should go into the box. We'll see...
True, but we are in a low crime area and we figured this was all we needed to deter porch pirates. But we are also planning to build an improved version of the box that will be even more secure.

All great ideas. Now that we have it working we may do exactly as you describe. That would be a great upgrade!
"That's three feet. That's exhausting!" Had me cracking up!
We freely admit that we are lazy, and therefore go to great lengths to have machines do things for us!
So glad I found this channel. You two are so much fun!
Thank you! We act just like that in real life too!

Thanks! We agree about wood costs right now. We try to use scraps whenever we can to keep expenses down.
OMG! I love you guys. Best build video ever!
Many thanks! We act like this off camera too!
@@AtomicDairy Oh yeah -- that's very clear. :-). If you are ever in Michigan, come hang out. We will have a blast!
Loved it! I extremely love how big the drop box is. Do you have a video of you building it?
Not yet! Now that we have built this one we have some ideas for improvements. So we are planning to build a second version and will document that one.

NICE WORK!! I would like to know what's called that sensor with LCD display, plz. and where I can get it? Thsnks!!

Very nicely done!
Thank you! It was a fun build!
Fantastic !!!
Thanks!
Cool build!
Thanks! Glad you like it!
Ok I'm inspired. Outside dimensions?
Excellent! The measurements are 27" wide, 25" deep, 44" tall.
I love it!! Awesome job!!
Thank you! We had fun making it and now realize that we apparently have a talent for building creepy things!
Great video. So entertaining. Clever device. Mahalo for sharing! : )
Thanks for watching!

Good ideas. We are planning on rebuilding our box to make it shorter, and with a more obvious lid.
There's a pizza driver joke here, but it flops in delivery.
great project!
Thanks! And I used to be a pizza driver!
Interesting, educational, and entertaining :)
Many thanks! We try to be funny and useful!
I just bought a Keter Delivery box just like that one and thinking of doing something like that in my house maybe instead of me baby yoda? Thanks guys
That's a great idea! We love this thing so much because it is so weird. And we never miss a package anymore now that we have the creepy eye alert!

How did those uninsulated leads going to the LEDs not short together under the heat-shrink?

Nicely done! Magnetic window-style sensor?
Yes, correct! These were the spares from the Alderaan Shard garage door project. The one we used in the video turned out to be bad but we swapped it for another after we figured out where the problem was.
@@AtomicDairy Neat, thanks!
Such a huge hike to the front porch! 😂
Definitely! And then you have to open the box to look inside after that hike. Who wants to do that every day?
@@AtomicDairy exactly!...the horror! 🤣
You still have to go outside and walk 3ft to get your package. Too much work.
Exactly! I need to find a way to update this project and cut all those extra steps out!
I would have expected that the visual would indicate the number (or wight) of the packages: one package, the lowest pair of LEDs light up; two packages, the bottom two; etc

We made it. Unfortunately you can't purchase something like this.
What are the materials then you used 🙏
That's a cool idea. I had thought of something similar, but putting an Amazon lock on it. Your idea is a bit better in my opinion.
Thanks! It was definitely a learning experience for us and we now have some ideas for the next one.
@@AtomicDairy Isn't that how it always goes. :)
What if the delivery guy just place the parcel on top of the wooden box? 🤣

Can you be my father in law? If she’s single. 😅 teach me stuff lol
Glad you liked it!
Re We will know, you won't
I gave my door bell a twitter account
we could know too
;)
True. But we have so many people ordering things we would never know who the tweet was for!
Third grade teachers steal stuff from our porch?
Why do I feel so lucky right now
They've been a problem....
your lock is not secured loll, u need metal box, not timber aS JUNKEIS, THEY BREAK ANYTHING, ALSO A COMBINATION LOCK WITH NUMBERS EEEEH
