    The genius of the writing in this show is that no one character is ever objectively right. As with all true ethical dilemmas, the choice is not right from wrong, it’s wrong from wrong. Notice how neither character gains the upper hand conversationally. They are both right. Most scenes of this nature involve one character preaching to the other in order to eventually win them over. But in BS, both Flint and Silver know that the other isn’t going to budge. They also know that each of them makes sense. It’s just a matter of perspective and ambitions, not right or wrong. It’s brilliantly scripted. Although I’m very thankful they ended it after 4 seasons (since most shows overstay their welcome and drag on until they suck) I would still watch another 30 seasons of this show. A rare gem that is CRIMINALLY underrated.

      The one problem with doing a sequel to this show is that they left the ending ambiguous. It would be difficult to avoid spoiling that ambiguity in the sequel, unless they just completely left Flint out of it, which would be extremely disappointing.
      Not saying I don't want them to spoil the ambiguity mind you, I kinda wanted a more definitive ending to the show. I just think the writers and showrunners might consider this a potential hurdle.

    • @angusduffield-bish885
      @angusduffield-bish885 4 года назад +48

      I'm pretty sure that the writers have said that they don't believe the story of Treasure Island actually happens in the Black Sails universe. That's what Flint is talking about when he says "We will have been for nothing. Defined by their histories, distorted to fit into their narrative. Until all that is left of us are the monsters in the stories they tell their children." Flint predicts Treasure Island, and all the stories of the pirates thereafter. Essentially, the writers of the show are suggesting that Black Sails could actually exist in the real world, but the stories about the pirates which we believe in are almost certainly untrue.
      It should also be noted that according to historical records Woodes Rogers came back to reclaim Nassua, and ruled as its governor from 1728 to 1732. He was able to acquire funds for this expedition mostly due to the popularity he had gathered from a book titled 'A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the most notorious Pyrates'. Rogers was not the author, but supplied much of the information for the book, so you can imagine he painted himself and his enemies in rather deliberate lights.

    Such a simple line, but possibly my favorite delivery in the entire show, Silver saying ‘I don’t care’ sums up the entire arc of his relationship with Flint. While they understand each other better than any other could, Flint could never accept that Silver truly doesn’t believe in the sentiment of it all, and that is why their partnership was always doomed. It’s spoken almost as if Silver pleading with him to understand, after all these years.

      wrong! Though it seems that Silver was "wiser" here by not going on with the madness, Flint was always one step ahead! Flint knew the craziness of his ideas and overall endeavors. He always knew. But he had NOTHING ELSE to live for.....therefore he simply sought out someone to get him out of that mindset and finally set him free.
      Silver's character was unbelievable of course! Truly byond his years in terms of wisdom. But the chess player was definitely Flint.
      He could not bring himself to stop himself in his destruction.........so he both consciously and subconsciously aligned himself with the only person on earth that could, and that was Silver.

    I love that they're both completely right. There are always manipulative, powerful people using and creating fear to keep everyone else in the fold, and they need to be regularly challenged and held to account. But when that's undertaken heedlessly out of resentment and lust for vengeance then the cure very easily becomes worse than the disease, because if people can't live their lives in peace then it rather defeats the point. A very timely message, in my opinion, and very eloquently and honestly presented. Brilliant show.

    • @TheStraightestWhitest
      @TheStraightestWhitest 4 года назад +17

      That's why it's a cycle. There's times of peace, during which the elite creep their plans in and grab for power. Then they're challenged, war breaks out, eventually the rebellion always wins, and peace returns.
      And history repeats itself. Everybody gets comfortable, another opening for tyranny presents itself, and someone takes it. Etc, etc.
      I'd argue we're living on the brink of just one such cycle ourselves right now within the EU and the USA.

    • @noxluxe8674
      @noxluxe8674 4 года назад +8

      @@TheStraightestWhitest I have a few issues with that theory. The first is the idea that "rebellion always wins", which just isn't true. As often as not, rebellions just escalate beyond sense and knock the house down, or provoke a crackdown, and leave everybody in an even worse and more miserable situation than they started in, providing even more opportunity and leverage to abusers of power in the process.
      The second is that that 'cycle' implies both that things don't change for the better without an explosive revolution, and that progress also isn't sustained over time, neither of which jams with modern human history.
      I'd argue that what's happening in the EU and the USA right now is that Flint's side of the argument has tried to take over our culture. People have gotten drunk on progress and totally forgotten to think about the very real costs and pitfalls, and that has all sorts of destabilizing effects. Loss of mutual trust across the political spectrum, the polarization of every issue to discourage debate, people being driven disproportionately into the opposite camp in sheer protest while the remainders insulate themselves more and more in their own bubble, escalating the tension and paranoia while distracting everyone from the issues we actually agree need to be handled...
      Some sort of explosive confrontation seems possible, I agree with that. Whether it ever NEEDED to happen in the first place is another matter entirely. That progress will win, or that the aftermath will be more peaceful and just than what used to be the status quo, is something I seriously doubt.

      Maybe give the mask thing another few months before going to war over it? There are definitely instances of power being taken and then freely released, both historical and contemporary. I don't know where you got the idea that there isn't.
      My go-to approach is to first consider whether people are being dumb, and then whether they know more than I do. Sometimes it's worth trusting that things aren't as bad as someone else can make them sound, and that people are trying their best even if you expected better from them.

You know about The Great Reset? This is not a conspiracy. It's out in the open. Just Google it. World Economic Forum website. The lockdowns around the world actually don't make scientific or economic sense. They are using the virus to enact economic destruction globally. The Great Reset by the World Economic Forum has commercials saying things like "in 2030 you'll own nothing and you'll be happy." They are using leftist policies and pushing "global warming" to destroy the common man. High taxes for green energy that actually doesn't equal less carbon footprints....Covid lockdowns to destroy small businesses and make us more reliant on corporations. Why believe even a single thing someone like Silver tells Jim about the past? And why do we believe every single detail that this teenaged boy is narrating to US as having happened? The pure anguish on both their faces, in both their voices breaks my heart every single time. Rewatching this show with my mom after she expressed some interest literally just after I finished the finale and there's so many little bits of dialogue from Flint and Silver, not necessarily to each other, that take on such a different life and meaning after having watched the finale. Truly masterful storytelling; this is how you write a masterpiece of a show

    No other TV-series or FILM, that has ever been launched, comes even close to BLACK SAILS.

    One of my favorite scenes of all time. Amazing acting, stellar score, perfect physical surroundings, and some of the best dialogue I’ve ever heard on tv. The writers laid bare the complex, and often subtle or hidden, motivations of the two most important characters that defined the arc and ethos of the entire show, and were able to do it with a bow and without being condescending or overly didactic. What I love about this series is it basically combines the lore of Treasure Island with real world history. Nassau (Bahamas) was a pirate base, which was ultimately conquered by the British Royal Navy. In the novel, Captain Flint was described as a somewhat mysterious character, with no motives beyond a love for treasure. Long John Silver's motive was claiming Flint's treasure, until he grew a liking to Jim Hawkins.
    Here, Captain Flint is some kind of revolutionary who dreams of a free world for all downtrodden, be they pirates, fugitives, or slaves. John Silver however is a realist. He knows this is a war they can't win, so he tells Flint what he always wanted to hear: That his true love was waiting for him.

    The VERY ROOT of TRAGEDY in this dialogue - from my point of view - lies in the simple fact, that NONE of These two men is RIGHT with his opinion.
    Both men reached "the point of no return", and they KNOW it!! In other words: BOTH men are RIGHT or NONE of them.
    What Impressed me the most, is the BRUTAL TRUTH and timeless ACTUALITY (!) of the messages, burried underneath the Dialogue ("NWO-Agenda"!!).
    The TRUTH hurts.
    This dialogue is really "out of time and space"...
