Yes this is true. The reviews of this movie and the box office were terrible for Raise the Titanic when it was released. Everyone who has seen this film though said this scene alone was worth it. The slow motion camerawork was amazing when they tried to raise the ship from the ocean bottom. And the scene when the intact Titanic slowly breaks the surface of the Atlantic and is refloated on top of the ocean again was incredible.
Yup, definitely a slightly cheesy movie, but when her bow breaks the water and the theme starts playing, even now, knowing the truth of the wreck, that "what if" thought always crosses my mind.

It most definitely didn't occur in the manner depicted in the film Titanic as this would've been readily observed and widely reported by the survivors. All the theories on how and when this occurred are purely hypothetical rather than conclusive.

There were also accounts of 'explosions' before the ship submerged, which the media at the time chalked up to exploding boilers (a not unreasonable assumption at the time). The 'explosions' survivors heard were almost certainly the sounds of the ship tearing apart. Since the sinking of such a leviathan and technological wonder was so unexpected and hard to comprehend, the idea of it's being torn apart was even further from people's minds, so it's no wonder that so few people elected to take the notion seriously at the time. This movie really went out on a limb and was fairly liberal with poetic license. It's funny to think that when the bow of the ship was structurally strong enough to be lifted from the sea bed, the technology didn't exist to raise it. Now the technology exists, but if an attempt were made to raise the bow, it would likely just crumble.

If only she was in as good of a condition in real life as she was in this movie. Unfortunately, both the model used for this movie and the real ship is both no longer salvageable and deteriorated. However, it's great to see how the Pre-Discovery movies liked to eave the hope that if found she could be salvaged as it shows how much we have been able to peel back the curtain on the history of the ship and to separate fact from fiction as well as get deeper into the human side of the tragedy.
This movie was merely a hollyweird theory. Nobody is raising a ship a mile off the ocean floor, or for that matter, a ship over 60 years old that was HEAVILY deteriorated due to saltwater rust erosion. That, and the fact multiple survivors said that Titanic snapped in half before going down.
While sad, it's really interesting what happened to the model. I'm not sure if it's where it was produced but they put the model up on outdoor display and it looks like a realistic deteriorating shipwreck as it's decaying. Kind of like that SS America that's stranded on the rocks. While it would've been cool to save it it still doesn't lack for realism. Practical effects are fantastic.

The main cause of deterioration is because of an iron eating bacteria called Halomonas titanicae. The bacteria has gradually weakened and consumed the steel and iron of the ships structure. Normally at that depth there isn't enough oxygenated water to cause a normal rate of natural rust like you would see on/ near the surface like some shallower wrecks. On the surface water is oxygenated either by the movement of the water in reaction to air or through photosynthesis by marine plants like algae. Titanic however is located roughly 12,500 feet below sea level in the dark abyssal plain.Other materials such as soft woods and plaster haver deteriorated on the wreck due to interaction with water and marine life such as shipworm, but denser wood types like teak and mahogany have survived and have been found within the wreck (Ex: Turkish baths on F deck, or remains of 1st class staterooms ).
At the time of the book’s publishing (and of this film’s making), the wreck of the Titanic had not been discovered yet, so the fact that the ship had broken in two as it sank and lost a stack was not yet known.

Even if they didnt know the ship had split in two its pretty clear it would’ve been pretty badly damaged upon impact with the sea floor and that after all the years under water the wood wouldve rotted and the metal would have rusted. The long shots are not bad, but the moment you get in close, that old pre-CGI bugaboo rears its ugly head; you _can't_ miniaturize water. Just look at those gigantic droplets.
I've read the book by Clive Cussler, great book. Saw the movie and thought it very forgetable, half the story was left out. Cussler made the comment that never again would he allow one of his books to be made into a movie.
Sahara was a long way from the novel, but it was much better as a film than raise the Titanic. I still enjoy watching Sarah from time to time. I haven’t watched raise the Titanic since it first came out on laser disk.
So, you folks who want to pass judgement without even seeing the full movie need to be filled in on the story. It is the cold war era, America vs. USSR, and the US has found a way to make a forcefield that will shield the US from nuclear attack. The device must be powered by a rare mineral that is only known to exist in sufficient quantity in a shipment that was placed on the Titanic. They must raise the ship to find this mineral. This movie was made BEFORE the real wreck was found so the true condition was totally unknown. Most popular theories of the time held that it sank intact. The second funnel is missing instead of the first because the producers wanted to preserve the beautiful profile of the ship--purely aesthetic reasons. There are kingposts and bulwark added to the bow of the model to match a real ship they did some location shooting on. The wreck is refloated by her hull being filled with foam and huge cages with hydrazine gas balloons welded to her lower sides. Watch the full movie and you will see all of this.

Everytime I see this it gives me goosebumps. In my wildest fantasy I wished this could have happened. I'd love to have it raised and be able to see it in person and just learn about it all day. Of course though it would also have been disrespectful in a way to those who died and any survivors. A sunken ship should stay where it is. But Titanic is one of those historical objects that I xan never get enough of. It would be so cool to see the real Titanic both halves put on display. It would for sure have been preserved for decades to come. It's sad to see it slowly being turned into nothing but it's better than having it raised when first discovered and disrupting the final resting places of those killed. I'll never get tired of hearing about Titanic. I'd love to study it's schematics. I'd spend hours if I had the chance to look over the designs and prints of the Titianic from just being an idea to the build, and the final touches.
Researchers did raise one small section coming from the port or starboard area with an intact port hole, they did not disturb the bow or stern to get it it was a loose bit among the mile long debree field and is now in a museum with a small selection of reclaimed plates and dishes and a few other little items for the world to see so we dont forget about this tragedy..

@Dark Wizard Very little actual corrosion has occurred due to the depth and temperature of the water at the wreck site, most of the deterioration has been caused by 'rusticles' which are hitherto unknown living organisms that are devouring the ship at an escalating pace.
Even if it were possible to raise the Titanic like in the movie, I would see two major problems: 1.) You could somewhat reverse history and bring back this wonderful ship as if it never had sunk, but you could not make the catastrophy itself unhappen, all those people who lost their lives. 2.) As you can even see in the model of the raised ship in this movie, the ship would be in a horrible state, totally damaged, and imagine also the interior of the ship after the water is drained: all the wooden furniture destroyed or full of moisture, moldered etc. You could leave it as that and expose it in a harbour as a ruin but never restore it to its former splendid appearance.

Even though this film was made before the actual discovery of Titanic, and at the time, we didn't know she'd broke apart, she would not have been in that good a condition
She would have been bent at the bow from hitting the seabed first due to the angle she sank at. Plus the Aegean sea where the Britannic sank is much more salty than the Atlantic so it's basically acted as a preserving agent

She had little soft cover editions of Raise the Titanic; Vixen 03; Night Probe; Iceberg... but she had hard cover editions of his later books like Treasrue and Cyclops. Although the movie is from 1980 and they didn't know how the wreck really looks like, did the really believe, masts and rigging are still intact after sinking and rotting for 68 years then?
Dr. Ballard thought it was possible when they flew their first unmanned craft over the wreck. They were very careful not to get it tangled up in any rigging that might still be present. They really did not know what to expect.

My dad took my to see that movie at the theater. Then the Ballard new broke my heart, the reports from passengers were true, she did split in two. And was almost 3 miles down on the sea floor. Glade they found her but sad they found her to.
Technically, it makes no sense for there to air bubbles rising ahead of the ship. All air in flotation devices would ned to stay in them, so the only thing to see would be water being displaced.
If they raised the Titanic today it would just Disintegrate once it hits the surface due to amount of rust and due amount of time it has been in the oceans floor I say just leave it it's a burial site and just leave it where it is basically it will be gone meaning it will be just nothing at some point it will lost

Everytime I see this it gives me goosebumps. In my wildest fantasy I wished this could have happened. I'd love to have it raised and be able to see it in person and just learn about it all day. Of course though it would also have been disrespectful in a way to those who died and any survivors. A sunken ship should stay where it is. But Titanic is one of those historical objects that I xan never get enough of. It would be so cool to see the real Titanic both halves put on display. It would for sure have been preserved for decades to come. It's sad to see it slowly being turned into nothing but it's better than having it raised when first discovered and disrupting the final resting places of those killed. I'll never get tired of hearing about Titanic. I'd love to study it's schematics. I'd spend hours if I had the chance to look over the designs and prints of the Titianic from just being an idea to the build, and the final touches.
Researchers did raise one small section coming from the port or starboard area with an intact port hole, they did not disturb the bow or stern to get it it was a loose bit among the mile long debree field and is now in a museum with a small selection of reclaimed plates and dishes and a few other little items for the world to see so we dont forget about this tragedy..
@Dark Wizard It's not corrosion that's destroying her, it's actually a bacteria called Halomonas titanicae that's "eating" the iron the ship was made of, and in time she will be no more, and her remains will be recycled back into the ocean's ecosystem.
@Dark Wizard Very little actual corrosion has occurred due to the depth and temperature of the water at the wreck site, most of the deterioration has been caused by 'rusticles' which are hitherto unknown living organisms that are devouring the ship at an escalating pace.
Even if it were possible to raise the Titanic like in the movie, I would see two major problems: 1.) You could somewhat reverse history and bring back this wonderful ship as if it never had sunk, but you could not make the catastrophy itself unhappen, all those people who lost their lives. 2.) As you can even see in the model of the raised ship in this movie, the ship would be in a horrible state, totally damaged, and imagine also the interior of the ship after the water is drained: all the wooden furniture destroyed or full of moisture, moldered etc. You could leave it as that and expose it in a harbour as a ruin but never restore it to its former splendid appearance.

One redeeming factor for this movie which certainly adds to this scene is John Barry's amazing soundtrack.

@@raven4k998 There's no actual categorical evidence that the ship broke in half prior to it becoming submerged nor of most direct contradictory relevance to that theory, any eyewitness accounts of that occurring. Speculation about how this occurred only in fact began once the wreck was located. When this film was made the wreck still hadn't been located and there was therefore no knowledge of its state. What was it Sir Lew Grade said about this film? "It would have been cheaper to lower the Atlantic" referring to the money it lost when it bombed at the box office. Other than the bow being broken, her sister Britannic is in about that condition, just covered in coral.
She would have been bent at the bow from hitting the seabed first due to the angle she sank at. Plus the Aegean sea where the Britannic sank is much more salty than the Atlantic so it's basically acted as a preserving agent

She had little soft cover editions of Raise the Titanic; Vixen 03; Night Probe; Iceberg... but she had hard cover editions of his later books like Treasrue and Cyclops. Those later books where definitely not as light because the were bigger and thicker. 😉

Although the movie is from 1980 and they didn't know how the wreck really looks like, did the really believe, masts and rigging are still intact after sinking and rotting for 68 years then?
Dr. Ballard thought it was possible when they flew their first unmanned craft over the wreck. They were very careful not to get it tangled up in any rigging that might still be present. They really did not know what to expect.
Raise the titanic is one of the most boring movies I have ever seen.
5-years after this movie came out: All hope was dashed after it was confirmed from eyewitnesses survivors, that Titanic was indeed broken in two and raising her would never be possible.
Survivors of the Titanic even stated that she broke in half before going down. I don't have a clue how anyone wouldn't believe them, they were ON Titanic the night she sank!

My dad took my to see that movie at the theater. Then the Ballard new broke my heart, the reports from passengers were true, she did split in two. And was almost 3 miles down on the sea floor. Glade they found her but sad they found her to.
Technically, it makes no sense for there to air bubbles rising ahead of the ship. All air in flotation devices would ned to stay in them, so the only thing to see would be water being displaced.
