Imagine being a marine or ODST and watching a Spartan go down in combat. The unstoppable super-soldiers, the pride of the UNSC, the only thing standing between humanity and total annihilation- and you just watched him eat it. Imagine how terrifying that would be.
Further, imagine what it feels like when they’re among civilians and realize there are no reported Spartan casualties and the UNSC propagates them as being these nigh-immortal demi-gods - when you saw one go down and another die in that cruiser.
Actually Spartans are so fast that they're described as blurs of movement by other soldiers of the UNSC on the field and given the chaotic nature of the battle I doubt the ODSTs will even recognize the Spartan body, let alone see the Spartan fell

Killing characters because it’s easier to do that then character development doesn’t make anything sad
Are you blind to the story of Reach? The whole point of the characters dying was to show that not all Spartans were unstoppable and that Reach fell so fast everyone in Noble team didn't have time to accept Thoms death alongside a new member be added so fast. There was no room for the characters to be friendly. The characters were portrayed perfectly as Spartans aswell.
This really hits different when it says "We are ODST" or " Remember Reach".

@@semmy1150 I'm talking about before he threw the bomb. The timer was still engaged the entire time. If he threw the bomb before, and then ran out, he would have had plenty of time to escape. I mean, that was Kats original plan, anyway. He would have been fine if he didn't stand there dramatically and waste valuable time.

Halo reach really grounds you as a player. Playing a chief and just wrecking all enemies in your way to playing as a Spartan arguably as deadly(noble 6 being the only other confirmed ultra lethal vector besides chief if memory serves me right) and watching him die, it's just grounding, knowing someone so deadly is just, gone.

The Covenant set this up as a trap with the factory/mine as bait. Most of the assaulting Spartans in this generation were killed. The Covenant thought they've succeeded in wiping out the Spartans. Human just made more. Lower in quality, though. Just volunteers from the marines elite units.

There's a reason that the ODST are referred to as "Hell Jumpers". They all know from when they are trained that when they drop to earth, that drop may be their last moments. Marines will keep fighting even though they all know that they are basically cannon fodder. Spartans will fight on the front line, and they know that if their comrade (I can't think of another word) dies, they can't grieve for even a moment, because that moment could be what separates life and death. That's mostly why Chief got Cortana, he suffered so many mental illnesses because of what he saw. Jun from Reach most likely had the same mental scarring since he was the only one that survived. The entire army, real life included, constantly fights even though they know that they could die. *That* is what separates a soldier from a warrior.
I have know idea why I typed all of that, I just wanted to be serious now that my daughter is asleep.
