I've been a big Bad Religion fan for years and, while I've liked their recent efforts and they've certainly had their high points, I haven't felt that those albums been quite as good as their earlier work. True North, however, changes all of that. It is easily their best album album since Against The Grain. If you've been missing the classic BR sound of the early 90s, then you wont be disappointed.
The Empire Strikes First is frickin amazing, man. Otherwise I do think they were a bit less consistent after Stranger Than Fiction. Every album has at least a handful of incredible songs, but also some I could take or leave. Unfortunately I feel that way about True North as well. But hey-- still one of my favorite bands ever and I always am interested in what they have to say. Cheers to all my fellow BR fans
Unrepentant vagabond. Plot the new coordinates and cast the map aside. Now I gotta ramble on, Navigate the pitfalls and cross the great divide. The mapmaker's legend has direction and a key. He set the declination, but what good is it to me? I can't see the rationality. The world's not my responsibility. And happiness isn't there for me, But maybe I'll inch closer to the source When I find true north. With or without a friend. Keep searching till the end. Testing fate and cheating death. No one ever told me it was gonna be like this. Contemplate the randomness. When the mind is willing, it gets downright perilous. Overburdened, underwhelmed, their ethical decrees. That's your moral compass, but what good is it to me? I can't see the rationality. The world's not my responsibility. And happiness isn't there for me, But maybe I'll inch closer to the source When I find true north. With or without a friend. Keep searching till the end. When I find true north.
Greg Graffin is easily one of the best song writers ever. I haven't listened to much Bad Religion the last few years. I did a lot in high school and I'd like to hear more songs like this one. It has a classic Bad Religion quality that cannot be immitated
Someday I'll thank these guys for putting so many thoughts into a song, that couldn't have been made in a better moment, for me. Excellent, flawless work, BR.
I made a mistake...I read the comments!! now I need to respond! I am not a "punk" in the generic term, I LISTEN to alot of punk Rock, and Bad Religion has always kept me listening because they talk about so much that speaks to me. I am soo sorry that I don't wear the Punk Uniform, hate my parents, dye my hair/ have a mohawk, paint my fingernails black etc.... of course last I checked, being a punk didn't have anything to do with fitting in either!
that said Bad Religion is Definitely a Punk Band. They have always been a Punk Band. anyone who says Punk is Dead, should Check out Rancids Indestructable album- specifically "Last one to Die" and then kindly go fuck themselves
True North is their highest charting record in the US yet. Of course, relevancy and sales don't always go hand in hand, but when a band scores its highest debut 34 years into their career, it must mean something. Their music is not the easiest to digest, but the right people know about them
why does it matter how you look? i've been listening to bad religion for 10 years and i listen to heavy metal and black metal and you could never tell by looking at me.
The song is written to make it sound like someone is traveling around as a vagabond but in reality it's about finding out who you really are deep down. Instead of trying to fit in. This is why I love punk Rock
99% of kids in the alt/punk music scene end up growing it of it. I was balls deep 22 years ago and while I still listen to the music you won't see me wearing my old leather.
It simply speaks to what still lies in every single person here. I'm 45, going to see them again next month, never grow up. Do your shit, dont let your old you kill your younger you. It's what made you who you are.
So I was talking with my friend a while ago, who's into a lot of electronic music (maybe that's relevant to the point, shit, I don't know.) He's basically saying how it's painful to watch a lot of those old men living off of old glory, and how artist should just quit after their "prime" is over. Now this band was just the best argument I could come up with to crush his. I mean look at the 16 albums they released. Trust me, I've heard them all countless times, and in my opinion there's really only one bad record.. isn't there? Now of course one bad record certainly doesn't undermine 3 'okay' records, 2 good ones, 7 really good ones and 3 that made music history.. does it now? And thank God they didn't fucking quit after their prime, 'cause I couldn't really see them live as a 4-year old. So yeah, basically.. fuck that shit is what I'm sayin'!
That's the one I meant with 'one bad album'.. which one would be the other? I'd say either No Substance or New America.. but nah, I consider them 'okay' records
Being a punk is about attitude. It is about doing things, not because you feel obligated to, but because you want to. It is about giving the finger to those who dictate what you should be, and becoming the person who you choose to be.
I'm late to the game since the past 2 albums have been pretty bad, but I finally dove into True North and THIS is the Bad Religion I remember, the song and the album. I have no idea what they were thinking with this video, though.
I liked New Maps of Hell... Wasn't a fan of Dissent of Man though. I guess that's what comes when you're a millenial who was introduced to Bad Religion from The Empire Srikes First.
+The Plebeian Cultist I actually wanted to reply to Andrew :3 I don't usually have favorite albums, I just listen to songs randomly and see what I like.
He's in his father's room getting some old school inspiration, the song IS actually about youthful thinking, finding your own way but still in search for timeless values. Did you expect 50+ BR jumping around on stage to this song? Seems like some people never understood BR's vision of "punk"
Good job Bad Religion, you got all this people talking because of the video :). I would def talk to kids like this instead judging, that is why I have been listening to this band for over a decade.
Guys, guys...you're all a buncha punks. Ok? You get to be a punk, and you, and you. There's no point in arguing about what's punk and what's not. More than the way the kid dresses, I got the point of the video to be demonstrative of the feelings one has when first listening to a new song, or liking a favorite song so much because it helps you to get on with your day. He was obviously in a hurry, yet he stuck around to finish the song. Don't you have songs like that? I think the video was simply about that. I'm gonna go now. Just remember, BR is the best band in history. Haha. It's true (to me)!
Okay, to everyone talking crap about the kid in the video: He's name is Brennan Benko from the band False Puppet. Stop taking crap. Seriously grow the fuck up. He's such a nice guy & I love him dearly.
they've had more longevity than almost anyone and definitely have delivered more consistent quality records than any punk band in history. they're still relevant. i saw them a few months ago in a sold-out venue. if your friend doesn't know BR is still around they obviously aren't fans of punk rock.
Dear christ... it's a damn video. Everyone chill. So what if the kid wants to wear that shit and is into punk. Obviously, the kid found himself in punk. That's his "true north".
punk is not really what you own, its more like what you are and how you think. you can have a phone and you can still be punk. hell, you can have a job, a wife, a kid and you can be punk all you want. :) its the freedom man.
At first I hated it too....but try to thnk again about the lyrics, the current youth in the world, the music they listen to nowaday, the search for a reason to live, the true north, and the video. It is good, man. Subtle punk !
I think you all missed the point of the song/video. I was a teenage runaway, who later went into the Naval Special Warfare Command. This song/video really struck a nerve with me.
Let me explain. Lower class family (who probably lived through the 80's or 90's punk rock wave) breeds main character in video. Main character lives and learns through this music, and is inspired when being 16, 17, 18, or whatnot. Main character is only beginning his journey. How many of you started with Green Day or Sum 41, probably the lot of you, minus those who either had smart parents, or bold parents.
I can't go on any videos of any sort without people saying "Green Day isn't punk" "Punk is dead" "This isn't punk this is whiny emo bullshit (this one was on an Anti-Flag video)" "This isn't punk it's pop punk it's different" People who complain about punk not being punk anymore are like amish--stuck in the past. The genre evolved over time and began branching off into different forms (see: Black Flag, Green Day, At The Drive-In, Devo, The Gaslight Anthem, Comeback Kid, The King Blues, basically half of the grunge scene). Like everything in this world, punk rock went through changes to keep up with the times. The sooner people accept that, the less whining and elitist bullshit there will be.
2 years old comment? Meeeh, don't care I still reply! Yes by some kind of black magic there are elitists morons even in Punk...Which basically is not compatible with elitism...Some people are just stupid...We can't do anything about it...We just have to wait that good ol' Darwin do the job for us.
It’s like all the metal heads who despised Korn and limp bizkit and nu metal as a genre. Sure not all of that is the best ever but again music evolved. I enjoy slayer and Metallica just as much as I do limp bizkit and avenged sevenfold. I enjoy old school bad Religion and black flag and social Distortion and Sex Pistols just like I enjoy Green Day and the Offspring (my favorite band of all time), Blink-182 and sum 41. I swear, the Rock genre has some of the best fans ever and some of the worst!
Some of the stuff I listen to is 100% punk but if you played it back in the 80s it just would t make sense. It needed the original stuff to exist in order to have context and a history to draw on.
Gustavo Fernandez Come on -.. You think that everybody who listening punkrock must looks like punk guy? Not even punk guys listening this music because punkrock goes to mainstream, its a good music. So people what dont like rap, hip hop and anything else... lets go to punkrock music :)
Honestly, I think people saw the video and left feeling blank because it's pretty much a mirror of what some teenagers do; nothing really. I mean, that video pretty much summed up what I do in my room during a whole day, so yeah. A video reflecting reality.
Unrepentant vagabond Plot the new coordinates and cast the map aside Now I gotta ramble on Navigate the pitfalls and cross the great divide The mapmaker's legend gave direction and a key He set the declination but what good is it to me? Mitch Wotton not judging the kid. Just the shitty uninteresting video. You'd think a band like Bad Religion would put a little more care and craft into their video content. It's just a little disappointing..
Derek Dean It’s interesting, but not invigorating. I’m just like this kid, and it’s weird seeing what’s essentially “myself” from an outside perspective. Maybe I’m just an outlier, though...
Well said. I think to Bad Religion themselves and most of it's true fans, "punk" means a way of looking at the world and reacting to it. A way of life. Not a fashion, or a superficial trend.
To me punk is a family and every punk was accepted for whatever they listen to or look like (Not Nazi Punks). Take care of your punk brothers and sisters still do what the fuck you want. It's more than just rebellion, it's family. You can be looking like Greg or you can look like members of the Casualties, punk is punk. It comes in many shapes and sizes. I found punk on my own and knowing that there's always gonna be a family to back you up when your real one wont is the best feeling EVER.
This video sucks, but the song is still Bad Religion. From 80's to now, they've lost very little of themselves. Fuck the haters, fuck the purists. Bad Religion fans know what's up.
This kid has bad record care. He obviously doesn't know that leaving an album out like that can cause dust to build up, possibly leading to the needle skipping or even scratching the vinyl. Causing it to become pretty much useless, unless you like... ''navigate the pitfalls and cross the great divides, the map makers eeekkkkkkkk my head is full of GHOSTS!''
Haha most of my old albums are so fucked up now. When you're a kid you don't care, you listen to them everyday and eventually they break or get scratched. Just part of being an ignorant teen lol.
This video makes perfect sense. The kids "true north" is old school punk, and this video obviously shows that. Music never dies, follow your heart and you can't go wrong.
I'm 41 and I've been listening to BR since No Control and Against The Grain and still do to this day. Punk rock is not in anyway about the look, is about being true to what you believe in, to keep it as real down to earth as possible. I know suit and tie ppl who love Punk rock. Now, does the suit makes 'em less Punk? Don't think so. Grow up and just enjoy music and life. My very OPO. That's it.
What's this video supposed to be about? I love punk music and I love Bad Religion, but this video made me embarrassed. Dressing like a punk isn't punk.
Edward James You're right, isnt about dressing like a punk. Its about love to punk, play punkrock a understand to reason why bands like BR sings this stuff. So whats problem?
it's a post it note in a way that is good to me. on basicalLy just about anything in the existence of any that is credible. it may b intended to say something else or aswelL. but to me it's just how I feel adhd pace works when not interrupted. and more advanced explanation on the sociological theory on the motivations n reasons deciding the manner we relate to each other, treat certain people, how the norm is set n criteria on making who to what type n the opressed group not caring on status quo. hence having better n more genuine understanding of the actual state of whstever surroundings n circumstances if so they would report from. ... n 'if happiness isn't there for me',, ... aswelL 'fuck you' n against the grain & social suicide
it's real punk. them who got no other way of being. sociology type shaped of circumstances n surroundings codependence. so it's the only way freedom reacts . natural order since 30 years back. n from anarchism 's first days
been a BR fan for 22 years after randomly picking a CD from a record store entitled 80-85. Ain't looked back since (Though New America made me think about it). Good think I like ya'll for your music and not the vids cuz this one... I'll keep those comments to myself.
I agree wit napalm 66 shows they didnt forget who they were especially the fact this album sounds like SUFFER. Definetly old punk rockers passing the torch to the younger generation.
you know what the deal is? its the record company, man.what record companies want from bands are an x amount of songs about whatever it may be,and also a certain amount of albums.if a band fails to reach any of the record company's goals, the band can kiss their record contract goodbye.thats why the dead kennedys went independent.they didn't want to be a puppet of a major record company
I can't believe people are getting so upset because the guy in the video has an iphone... is there like a rule saying that one true punk rock individual must not own any apple products? I obviously missed it.. anyway, the song is awesome. I love the new album!
PUNK ROCK MUSIC WILL ALWAYS HAVE A PLACE IN THE WORLD , AS LONG AS THERE IS SOCIAL DISCONTENT AND ANGER AND FRUSTRATION AND INJUSTICE, WE NEED SMART BANDS LIKE BAD RELIGION :)
I think criticizing some image or how a person looks like (any kind) is what make us common and boring, if you have the courage to be different is just for your self not too prove something too someone.
In my eyes Punk can be anyone. If they have the will to think and the courage to use those thoughts. BR always has and will represent thinking music that you can listen to anywhere with anyone.
I'd say it's trying to point out that Punk is still relevant and prevalent in the youth of today, hence the mix of all the old punk band posters/vinyls/memorabilia.
I have an iPhone, I'm a Biology Major and dress relatively nice. So are you saying I have to stop listening to punk music because I don't fit your categories? I don't really see what people hate about the video. I enjoyed it, because I used to be in a Punk band and played drums. So when I'm around campus I have my ear-buds in and listen to bands like BR and play the air drums/play along on my knees and stuff.
my dad brought me into punk and i completely agree i feel like although there isnt much punk backing where im from i have a family of punks who share the same opinions and are open minded and actually sane
Families disagree with one another, and lots of punks have wildly different ideas of what punk is and isn't. I personally uphold the idea that punk is just whatever you want it to be. But if a bunch of punks feel the need to try and settle a rigid definition out of something so free and unrestrained as punk, then let them quibble over it. Some people take punk really seriously, others don't. And we can disagree and talk about it, at least as long as we recognize the differences in one another.
I've been a big Bad Religion fan for years and, while I've liked their recent efforts and they've certainly had their high points, I haven't felt that those albums been quite as good as their earlier work. I feel the same thing, I haven't liked any records after The Gray Race with an exception of The Process of Belief and a few songs.

I think new maps and empire are both amazing
I think the Process of Belief is up there too but yeah. True North is great.
Yo, what up 8 years ago, hope you are doing well .
Its an awesome video! It's just a kid listening to music while getting ready to go out. Don't overthink it.

Bad Religion has been a band that impacted my life musically and in life... they r legends to me...
After 33 years still one of the greatest bands ever

Gus Taber i find it funny when you see these cookie cutter little carbon copies crying about conformity. looking like the fuckin 3rd riche.lol
Gus Taber You are fuckking right pal, this kid in the video is evrything i hate about our generation!
Punk is a mindset, not a fashion code.
lol, ur awesome Gus i love you. Last time i checked punk rock was a genre of music not a "way of life" or a "philosophy"!
Love it!!! Bad Religion sticks to TRUE punk style and will NEVER sell out!!!
True North is their highest charting record in the US yet. Of course, relevancy and sales don't always go hand in hand, but when a band scores its highest debut 34 years into their career, it must mean something. Their music is not the easiest to digest, but the right people know about them

After all these years they can still rock out.

Bad Religion or not... This is some really good PUNK ROCK!!!
very good comments
This a a weird video for BR for me. Their videos are usually just Greg Graffin pointing a lot
Lol ✌️
It spoke to me as a teen when this came out though maybe that was the point. To get Gen Y into skate punk well it kinda worked.
That is not true, for example in Sorrow....he...um...well....oh and in American Jesus...he..uh...hmm...
Does have a good point tho.
This song touches me so deep, still in search for True North wondering will I ever find it....
Deep or not, it didn't touch you in inappropriate places did it?
The song is written to make it sound like someone is traveling around as a vagabond but in reality it's about finding out who you really are deep down. Instead of trying to fit in.
This is why I love punk Rock

Hrvo182 It's entitled "Christmas Songs" and it's exactly what it sounds like.
Hrvo182 I didnt particularly enjoy 80-85 either, mostly because it sounds as though it was recorded with a thick wool blanket over the microphones
BUT IF IT WASN'T FOR US LIVING OFF OLD GLORY THEY WOULD BE JACK. WE ARE THE ONE THAT KEPT THEM GOING ....GROW UP

Спасибо Bad Religion за то что они до сих пор вкладывают столько драйва в свои песни, респект Вам! =)
Leave Mine to Me feeling in the beginning.
most bands half their age can't play with this much urgency. i can't imagine the world when bad religion finally stops making music.
This may be unrelated ...... But I love the dudes outfit .
Buck Rogers no it didn't HOLY FUCK
His outfit is hella gay
If you don´t like his outfit, that's your moral compass but what good is it to him?
Yes he looks kinda gay imo though I like it somewhat but f4ck it
You like wearing 35 coats? Lol
Aaron Gensler hes going to true north
Holy shit... So much love for these guys keeping it old school. Love BR since forever. Great song from a great band.
Hi there, good day to you and it is nice seeing you here.
those chucks are way too clean.
plot hole lol
THANK YOU! It's stupid how people are pretty much saying he's not punk because he as an iphone
So Justin Biever listens to BR, nice!
Gustavo Fernandez i thought that wa him too!
Gustavo Fernandez Come on -.. You think that everybody who listening punkrock must looks like punk guy? Not even punk guys listening this music because punkrock goes to mainstream, its a good music. So people what dont like rap, hip hop and anything else... lets go to punkrock music :)
Gustavo Fernandez Looks nothing like him though
Just a joke guys :) I don't really care at all how people look. But I think the guy looks a lot like that Beaver guy :P
He fuckin wishes..lol green day maybe..
Honestly, I think people saw the video and left feeling blank because it's pretty much a mirror of what some teenagers do; nothing really. I mean, that video pretty much summed up what I do in my room during a whole day, so yeah. A video reflecting reality.
Skinny Jeans? Check.
Reeboks? Check.
Studded Belt? Check-a-roo.
Logo T-shirt? Check-mate.
Mohawk? Check please.
What a rebel. *slow, sarcastic clap*
He's gay
Keurgui1 No gays have some elegant style, he is just a omologated teen
People stop complaining about the video. Get the message. Punk's not dead!
....When I find true NOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRTH
Unrepentant vagabond
Plot the new coordinates and cast the map aside
Now I gotta ramble on
Navigate the pitfalls and cross the great divide
The mapmaker's legend gave direction and a key
He set the declination but what good is it to me?
I can't see the rationality
The world's not my responsibility
And happiness isn't there for me
But maybe I'll inch closer to the source
When I find true north
(With or without a friend. keep searching 'til the end)
Tempting fate and cheating death
No one ever told me it was going to be like this
Contemplate the randomness
When the mind is willing it gets downright perilous
Overburdened, underwhelmed, their ethical decree
That's your moral compass but what good is it to me?
I can't see the rationality
The world's not my responsibility
And happiness isn't there for me
But maybe I'll inch closer to the source
When I find true north
(With or without a friend. keep searching 'til the end)
When I find true north
What's with everyone judging the shit out of the kid in the video?
*drums on own legs*
*texts someone*
*spends 15 minutes putting on jackets*
My summary of this music video
Matthew Jeffrey this vídeo has 2 minutes
All music videos sounds that stupid if you simplify them like that.
Fuck you
To me punk is a family and every punk was accepted for whatever they listen to or look like (Not Nazi Punks).
Hi there, good day to you and it is nice seeing you here.
Wtf, does this kid store his vinyls without sleeve? :'(
Who cares about the video anyway? the song is great and the lyrics are meaningful
Hi there, good day to you and it is nice seeing you here.
This video sucks, but the song is still Bad Religion. From 80's to now, they've lost very little of themselves. Fuck the haters, fuck the purists. Bad Religion fans know what's up.
+Nicholas Walker They lost the Into the Unknown part. :P That's about it.
+SaltpeterTaffy hence the LP released after it, Back to the Known
Great album once again. Really up there with Generator, Stranger than fiction and Suffer.
trendy punks assholes
...what?
Great video. He's jamming out to bad religion by himself, before he goes out to his day. He likes the song. He's on his own path, it fits the lyrics.
That awkward moment when you realize you just watched your emo cousin get dressed.
amazing, another great song, with that unique "bad religion touch"
When I move interstate and wave my controlling manipulative mother goodbye, you can be sure this is the first thing coming out the car stereo.
Did you ever move interstate?
up there with their best tunes. if you're one of the people who thinks br sucks after suffer, I honestly think ur missing out.
I think the music vid is about this kid trying to make a band happen
I'm 41 and I've been listening to BR since No Control and Against The Grain and still do to this day. Punk rock is not in anyway about the look, is about being true to what you believe in, to keep it as real down to earth as possible. I know suit and tie ppl who love Punk rock. Now, does the suit makes 'em less Punk? Don't think so. Grow up and just enjoy music and life. My very OPO. That's it.
¿ Why is a one direction guy in the video?
I think the video is about reflecting the permanence of the band and is perfect? BR: have a tremendous sound and your son can relate to his legacy!
So whats problem?
it's about the the modern day kids making a connection with the punks from 30 years ago I think
it's a post it note in a way that is good to me. on basicalLy just about anything in the existence of any that is credible. it may b intended to say something else or aswelL. but to me it's just how I feel adhd pace works when not interrupted. and more advanced explanation on the sociological theory on the motivations n reasons deciding the manner we relate to each other, treat certain people, how the norm is set n criteria on making who to what type n the opressed group not caring on status quo. hence having better n more genuine understanding of the actual state of whstever surroundings n circumstances if so they would report from. ... n 'if happiness isn't there for me',, ... aswelL 'fuck you' n against the grain & social suicide
it's real punk. them who got no other way of being. sociology type shaped of circumstances n surroundings codependence. so it's the only way freedom reacts . natural order since 30 years back. n from anarchism 's first days
Keep at it. Youll find your way.
been a BR fan for 22 years after randomly picking a CD from a record store entitled 80-85. Ain't looked back since (Though New America made me think about it). Good think I like ya'll for your music and not the vids cuz this one... I'll keep those comments to myself.
Punk rock Justin Bieber has never seen any of those bands he has posters for
they not alLowed
Bert Alan "Punk rock Justin Bieber" is goddamn hilarious =D
I never saw the Doors or deep purple either since i was born in 1981, yet i have there records on vynil and listen to them allot....
Just because you are born in a shitty time.
Dosn´t mean you cant love the music.
great video. love the representation of the religious kid, the symbolism which he wears, and the main concept of the song. all go very well together.
a guy with cross earring? what the fuck?
I'm so in love with this video. It just makes me feel so good
does anyone see the kid as a young Davey Havok?
NO
Great video! It's a shame most ppl don't seem to get it...
Gay video, amazing song.
I agree wit napalm 66 shows they didnt forget who they were especially the fact this album sounds like SUFFER. Definetly old punk rockers passing the torch to the younger generation.
probably wasn't the band themselves that chose this horrible video
Lord1V to each their own
you know what the deal is? its the record company, man.what record companies want from bands are an x amount of songs about whatever it may be,and also a certain amount of albums.if a band fails to reach any of the record company's goals, the band can kiss their record contract goodbye.thats why the dead kennedys went independent.they didn't want to be a puppet of a major record company
Epitaph is owned by the guitarist of this very band.. So saying it was the label's fault is essentially saying it was the band's fault
I think criticizing some image or how a person looks like (any kind) is what make us common and boring, if you have the courage to be different is just for your self not too prove something too someone.
its about finding happiness regardless of the direction others try to give you its not making fun of anyone one.
love the sound of old and new mix cant hate hate wen it has the best of both eras
if Bad Religion stopped making records, this would be a good one to go out on. but i bet they'll surprise us in due time.
The next one is already in the works getting an early 2017 release, we should see Greg's solo album just before that maybe by October
ah cool. even though i'm personally satisfied with that's they done for over 30 years, i'll be sure to check it out when it's here.
In my eyes Punk can be anyone. If they have the will to think and the courage to use those thoughts.
BR always has and will represent thinking music that you can listen to anywhere with anyone.
super stoked on this track. classic bad religion.
Thanks bro...one of my favorite bands. Seeing them live in Vancouver for the 4th time next Saturday!
Would love to jam with these guys. Wisconsin all the way! Since i was 9 these guys has shaped me!
It still bad religion like many many years ago... Love it...
my dad brought me into punk and i completely agree i feel like although there isnt much punk backing where im from i have a family of punks who share the same opinions and are open minded and actually sane
Bad religion's modern classic.
