What Happens to The Duke of Edinburgh Title Now?

- Prince Philip immortalised the Duke of Edinburgh title with over 70 years of service.
The Duke lent his title to the awards scheme which has benefited millions of young people since it was created in 1956, as well as becoming the patron of countless charities.
The title of the Duke of Edinburgh will eventually pass on to Prince Edward, but not until the Queen dies and Prince Charles becomes King.
Charles is the current Duke of Edinburgh and holds the title in keeping with the Letters Patent issued when George VI gave Philip the title in 1947.

The more l see of Edward and Sophie, the more l am impressed with them. They are modest, sincere and hard-working.
Sophie in particular is a gem
Cant edward take on the name?as he is already working on the charity also??
@@Phillips_284 the title had to revert to the Crown when the Duke died with Charles holding it for now. When Charles becomes King, he can then pass it to Edward. Edward is the only child of the Duke who has been awarded a Gold Award in the D of E Scheme. Kate is another family member.
@@kismetau You do know that the royal family cold have circumnavigated all this before the Duke died? I find it unfair that Prince Charles gets to delegate this!
@@fredrika27 they couldnt, an Act of Parliament would have to be passed to change the Letters Patent and make Edward the heir
The Queen said years ago the title would go to Prince Edward & Sophie they will become the Duke & Duchess of Edinburgh.

Excellent choice.
@@thebestchemicalelement4455 That probably won’t be happening because if Prince Charles has become Duke of Edinburgh that would make him Prince of Wales plastic available plus Duke of Cornwall And there is no possibility you can have two dukedoms
@@anthonykennedy5069 : Sure you can have multiple dukedoms. Charles, for example, has been both Duke of Cornwall and Duke of Rothesay since 1952; he became Duke of Edinburgh automatically upon his father's death this month. When he becomes king, Edinburgh will "merge in the Crown" and be available for regrant, and they announced back in 1999 that it would be regranted to Edward. (Meanwhile, Cornwall and Rothesay both automatically go to the eldest son of the sovereign, so William will be Duke of Cornwall, Cambridge, and Rothesay, and will likely be created Prince of Wales sometime after that.) For another example, his very distant cousin Charles Gordon-Lennox is Duke of Richmond, Duke of Lennox, Duke of Gordon, and Duke of Aubigny, thereby holding dukedoms in the peerages of England, Scotland, the United Kingdom, and France.
@@christinewolfe5481 The title of Duke of Edinburgh would go back to the crown after Prince Philip’s death, and then would go to the next-in-line to the throne, so that would be Prince Charles. But the Queen could reissue the title to Prince Edward instead.
I feel Prince Edward and his gracious wife the Duchess of Wessex are such an asset to the BRF. Sorry Countess
COUNTESS...but you are correct on the rest
If only William (or Edward) could inherit the throne instead of colossal failure Charles. If Charles had the slightest sense of propriety he'd abdicate in favor of his son as Spain's King Emeritus Juan Carlos did for his son Felipe in 2014, but in view of his family life it's obvious that propriety is not characteristic.

Prince Philip will always be THE (one and only) Duke of Edinburgh.... although I do see Prince Edward as an admirable candidate for the title. Extremely impressed both by him and his wife, Sophie 😘🥰🌺
He was actually the fourth man to be Duke of Edinburgh, and Prince Charles is now the 5th. The crown is bigger than any one man or woman.
@@comet1227 It was first created by George I for his grandson Prince Frederick, the eldest son of the future George II and the father of the future George III, in 1726. Frederick died and the title fell to the future George III himself, and it merged in the Crown in 1760 upon his accession.
It was also created in 1866 for Prince Alfred, the second son of Queen Victoria, who later became the sovereign Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and who died without a male heir.

The nice thing about the 1999 plan is that the title of Duke of Edinburgh will be hereditary once it is awarded to the Earl of Wessex.
That's ultimately up to Charles, but likely in consultation with Edward and possibly William. He can recreate it as it was as an hereditary male-line peerage, an hereditary eldest born peerage, a life peerage or as just about any arrangement imaginable.
A life peerage honestly wouldn't be surprising as it would allow the title of Duke of Edinburgh to become available again for a future royal rather than having it become a title like the Duke of Kent or Gloucester that possibly gradually drifts away from the Crown (as might well be the case with Duke of Sussex). Edward's son James is due to become Earl of Wessex anyway, so it's not even like he'd be shortchanged.
@@davidjames4915 it's entirely possible that James will choose to be styled as HRH Prince James of Edinburgh when he reaches his 18th birthday. I can't imagine that Charles and/or William would deny James the right to assume the title upon the passing of Edward.
I like clear and concise explanations. These explanations leave no room for doubt or speculation.

My goodness, that first picture of all their profiles, they are all his - family resemblance is amazing.
I don't think P.Edward and C.Sophie will inherit the title until after HM passes away. Duchess of Edinburgh is one of her many titles. The titles are not just given, they're passed down after one passes.
Once it has joined with the crown it can be recreated by Charles for Edward.
@@comet1227 she can't recreate it, because Charles already has it. It will cease to exist when Charles becomes king and then he can grant it to his brother.
@@comet1227 : No she can't. The creation of royal titles is within her power, but the inheritance is governed by British law, and Parliament decided many years ago that the monarch cannot unilaterally deprive somebody of a title or other inheritance/property.
@@comet1227 Technically I suppose it is theoretically possible that there could be two distinct creations of the title existing at the same time, so that both Charles and Edward would rightfully be called Duke of Edinburgh, Charles being the 2nd Duke under the 1947 creation and Edward simultaneously being the 1st Duke under the 2021 creation.
Well she would be technically the dowager duchess if Edward inherits the title. I think the dukedom will be bestowed on Edward before his mother dies. She doesn’t use the title just as Charles doesn’t officially use the Cornwall dukedom

Charles has the title till he becomes king, because the Queen holds the title Duchess of Edinburgh, so that can't be released till her death. Then Edward and Sophie can take the titles.
Incorrect. Camilla is now the Duchess of Edinburgh.
@@jesusthroughmary if that was correct why would Edward have to wait for the queen to die. The Queen is the Duchess of Edinburgh, she got given the title from her father King George when she married Philip, and remains so till her death. The title can't be passed down till she dies. Check facts and history. Just because Phillip has died doesn't meant she gives her title away, only Phillip's title is passed down.

Music is "the prince portrait" by Francis Wells
Prince Edward and Sophie have stepped up and done a remarkable job since Harry & Meghan left the Royal Family last year. They deserve this recognition. I wish them well.
Edward & Sophie will not receive the Edinburgh ducal titles for any work they have done since the Sussexes stepped down, as it was decided long before and at the time of their marriage that they eventually would receive the Edinburgh titles when Prince Philip and the Queen died, which is why they were given the Earl/Countess titles when they married. Had they been given ducal titles when they married (for example, Duke/Duchess of Clarence), they would not have been able to receive the Edinburgh ducal titles in the future. Edward felt it was worth the wait to receive the Edinburgh ducal title at some point in the future because of the meaning his father gave that title and the resulting honor that title affords.

Hello from Tokyo Japan ❤️
Prince Philip is indeed goodlooking during his younger years. RIP Your RH.
Prince Edward and Princess Sophia should become Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh. It's only right, the title shouldn't end with Prince Philip.
So glad the title will go to Prince Edward and not Prince Andrew!
He already has one of the most prestigious titles available, the Duke of York. No less than six dukes of York have become kings, among them the Queen's father and grandfather. He really has disgraced that illustrious title.
@@Vampirewolfking how many got divorced?
@@lizziebkennedy7505 one of them was Henry VIII, the one who was married six times.
@@Vampirewolfking it is quite nice Andrew has daughters only; the title will fall back to the crown after his death.
per tradition Harry would get it soon-ish after, but perhaps the title will be on hold for today's little Louis.
@@rivenoak : No, Harry won't get it, because he already has Sussex, and there is no tradition of granting York to somebody who already has another dukedom. George or Louis would be candidates, if Andrew is dead by the time they are old enough to be considered for titles. (In 1892, for example, that era's Prince George was already the only surviving son when he was created Duke of York, although he'd had an older brother, and the first Duke of York was the fourth surviving son, so it doesn't always go to the second son.)
I understood Prince Edward would inherit the title. I hope he does. He and Sophie are a great couple
they would if Philip died after the queen, king charles III. (or whatever his regal name will be) would in due time bestow it upon his brother.
inheritance is still the wrong word, as the line of succession for the dukedom is charles-> william-> george and broken only if one of the three is king, so the title merges with the crown and becomes a giveaway to whoever the acting monarch wants.
Who?
It is already said that Charles and queen announced together few years ago that they will regrant with new creation bypass to Edward to become duke of Edinburgh when Charles comes a king. William, George, Louis will be bypassed to Edward.
Current duke of Edinburgh is Charles, prince of Wales
Once Charles becomes king, the dukedom of Edinburgh will "merge in the Crown" and cease to exist, because a monarch cannot hold a feudal title from himself. William, George, and Louis aren't actually being bypassed. (William, of course, already has his own dukedom, Cambridge, and George and Louis will most likely receive similar titles in adulthood. In recent generations, titles are usually given at the time of marriage.)
By this (incorrect) logic, Harry, Archie, and Andrew are also being "bypassed".
@coin lover 123 My excuse is I care about people being educated and understanding why things are done the way they are done.
And I hope his children also take the HRH Prince/ss title... Since they are now Lady and Viscount
what are you on about? the Duke of edinburgh's children already carry the HRH
