I’m 76+ years old … I started hybridizing rollers when I was in the 4th grade … nothing fancy, but I was lucky enough to run into two roller guys that had many of Bill Pensome’s birds … I crossed many of those Pensome rollers with some other Birmingham’s for a man named Bill Hague who traveled to England and hand picked his own breeder stock … when I was in junior high my dad drove me up to Bill Pensome’s home in Reseda, Ca. … well Bill took a liking to me and my roller Philosophy … Bill would sell me birds for next to nothing … many came from his own newer brood stock to be… With the understanding that I’d never sell them … those birds soon became my new strain … But I got drafted out of college in 1967 and I gave all of my rollers to a good friend … Sometimes I wish I still flew birds … I used to kick them out in the mornings before I walked to the high school bus stop some 4 short blocks away from my folks home … gave me something to think about. This old guy knows of what he speaks … may he RIP … OH … Bill Pensome knew I liked mostly white birds so he’d save them for me … I still couldn’t resist his silver red barred badge headed birds … and some blue checked badge almost bald headed birds … super tight spinners … I didn’t care much for his red checked strain … they flew too high … and when they did roll it was too deep … I knew Bill’s birds pretty well … I knew him in late 1964-65 ? when he’d returned from another trip to England and returned with many new rollers that he was incorporating into his Pensome strain … memories … he loaned me two of those birds … after I brought a couple of his original rollers I’d acquired to his home to show him … We looked at his record books and matched up the band numbers … that pairing became some of my new brood stock … it’s a great hobby … but I live in Southern California now and just too many close neighbors to fly birds …
I have and bird that keeps falling out the kit but he rolls like a sumbitch... and he is actually too frequent but the kit is stil young. Not even yearlings the from my 1st round.
Anyone in the comments can point me in the right direction to find some good birds. Young kit birds as well as breeding pairs. Getting back into the wing of things and cant seem to get a line on any body that has birds for sale. Serious inquiry
Hey chacon this video I really really enjoyed RIP RICHARD MILLER
I really enjoyed this video. It reminded me of my first mentor. Old and wise
One of my Favorites, Always loved seeing him at the Fremont Pigeon Show. RIP my Friend
It's a shame guys like this have to pass on especially when his bigest hopes were to get others involved in the sport. Thanks for the nice video.
Great video. One of the best I've seen. Words of wisdom to help the novice enthusiast.
