Hey, I'm Donald Bell and in this Cool Tools video I am going to take a look at automatic center punches. Maybe you have a cheap one like this for marking drill holes in wood or metal. I'll show you how this performs against two higher end options. I've got Amazon links for all of these in the description.
So here's what we're looking at. This is a generic brass handle punch, the cheapest I could find. Costs around $5.
For $10, I bought the Neiko. It's well liked on Amazon and has a different type of handle.
And for the top of the line, I got this $30 punch from Rennsteig. Highly rated. There are pricier options people rave about, but paying more than $30 for a punch is probably silly for most of us.
So here's the generic punch you've probably used before. Up here you can adjust the striking force. Loose is less, tight is more. You push it into the material you want to make a dimple on until it clicks, and you've made your mark.
There may be an amazing version of this style of punch, but because they're visually indistinguishable, there's no good way I know of to tell the good from the bad without handling one.
As I understand it, what you're looking for in a punch is a useful amount of striking force to dent the material you're marking, and durability. Bad punches will get dull quickly. A lot of people just resign themselves to replacing these every year or so with a new cheap punch. Considering the price, it makes sense.
But even on it's best day, new from the package, tightened up for maximum impact. Here's the divot this makes on steel. A decent starting point for a drill bit, but it's going to go downhill quick.

I've had the Neiko for a couple years of occasional use, and it's continued to work really well. If this one wears out, I'll probably go for the Rennsteig. I've been incredibly impressed with all of my German tools, and have been steadily growing my collection of NWS, Felo, Wera, etc.
Starett probably makes the "best" center punch (and other measuring tools), but the price point really makes it feasible only for professional machinists (or those with unlimited tool funds.)

I have a cheap one I just run a hand diamond file over the point to keep it Sharp now and again, it's still going strong 5 years later!

I just bought the cheapest one style at Harbor Freight for $1.99. It is sold under the Pittsburgh Tool name and has a lifetime warranty. If it wears out, I’ll just exchange it for a new one. HF is a mile from my house so it is no bother to return anything really.
Thank you for introducing me to the Rennsteig Adjustable Automatic Center Punch. I bought one and it is Fantastic. Very well built. I do alot of punching of metal at work. This is way better than a hammer and cold centerpunch. May be overkill for those who do not need to use it frequently. I have used the other two and worn out the harbor freight Chinese version.

Besides striking force and build quality the punch it self must be the most important piece of this tool. What I would look for is what steel/material it is made of and if there are replacement to be bought. I would guess Tungsten carbide would be a great choice for the punch.
Tungsten is brittle, if you don't want to punch holes in HSS you will be better with HSS punch
He didn't check it as obviously this guy does not use center punches. He made a review about something he has very little knowledge about and that is the reason I gave him a thumbs down.
I have a Neiko and a set (4) of the Rennsteig. The Neiko is my goto simply because it is small and convenient. The Rennsteig I use if I need to punch through.They are power monsters. There are four models and range from I'm not sure to 250 newtons. A newton is a measure of kinetic energy (or force) roughly it is the amount of force to accelerate (or move) 2.2 lbs (1 Kilo) 39 inches (a meter) in one second. Lets say that the 250 newton punch will punch a hole in your head no problem. As far as the punches go I like that I can use them one handed while hanging on a ladder, Sometimes using the Rennsteig I have to lean into it and throw my weight into it to make the punch, the Neiko, much easier to use. So far in the past fives years none have disappointed me. Also a good basic survival tool; I carry one in my car in case I have to get myself or someone else out in a hurry.

The Rennsteig model you link to has a 60-130 N Striking Force, but for around the same price they have two other models: 20-50 N and 180-250 N. Are there advantages to getting this 'Goldilocks' model, or are there no good reasons not to get the more powerful model?
It depends on what you punch in. If you are using it on soft aluminum or brass all the time there is no sense in wearing your hand out using something powerful. If you are punching stainless steel all day the weak one won't do you any good. If you work on everything but mostly just mild steel the mid grade will be the best. From time to time it will make due on stainless or the few time you work on aluminum.
I work on mild steel 99% of the time and used to use the $2 brass harbor freight ones. They worked fine but the tips dulled and after a year had to be replaced. Ponied up for the general model 79 and it's great. Best yet the tips are replaceable. For $16 hard to beat.
If the larger head is a selling point and turning you away from a better tool just go get a cheap automotive shifter knob and epoxy it to the end. The knob on mine is off a fork lift. Bit smaller than the ones on store bought models but fits in my pocket better while still giving comfort.

I have a tool that came with the drilling bits set. Looks like a center punch tool but the pointed part is hollow and the rest of it looks like a sanding file. What is that tool for?

How long do these potentially last? I've been getting cheapos from Lowe's and they seem to stop working after like 10-15 times. The spring gets messed up or something and the mechanism stops working. Doesn't actually punch.
Or my favorite part, after few seconds of drilling, the drill still wonders off anyway so hole is never that accurate. I can't remember how many years ago was the last time I used a center punch
Mine stopped working / got jammed too. I then grinded a very small bevel on the end of the pin so that it was not getting jammed were it's supposed to be released into the hole.

There's also Cool Tools podcast, but it unfortunately has not kept up the paradigm. It's a weekly show with the fantastic Kevin Kelly and another guy, where a guest comes on and talks about a few of their favorite tools. Sounds great! Unfortunately, almost all the guests--while occasionally interesting--are writers and such, who suggest the exact writing software/journals/etc. over and over. It's only on a rare occasion that a guest is experienced with and discusses _physical_ tools. :/
I use the harbor freight one just about every day but it quit working so I took it apart and lost a piece so I need a new one and I would buy the harbor freight one again but now I’m wondering where you bought the middle one from so I can purchase one and I would like to get the German made one witch I’m sure is better but they are to proud of there shit , I mean 30 f-ing dollars? Would love to know where the second one was purchased
Is there another type of tool which can be used to make a center punch?
My vehicle is out of commission due to an 8mm bolt snapping off while fastening my transmission pan, and I don't necessarily have another way to get to an auto parts store.
I have all the necessary tools for the job I need to do tomorrow, but am lacking a center punch tool.
If anyone has some valid suggestions, I would greatly appreciated.

If you want to sacrifice a nail set by grinding it into a point, then there's a possibility.
I got the HF center punch- super stiff, can’t get it to spring and have to use a huge amount of force ( granted, I’m a scrawny female) - is that normal?
Nope, sorry. Being a scrawny female is NOT normal. However, you may be able to unscrew the top a bit to lessen the force required.
I wouldn't recommend the mid price $10 punch.
I've had two, after only about 50 cycles they becomes erratic and occasionally won't 'auto punch'. After 100 cycles it's becomes so frustrating trying to get them to punch that they went into the trash!
Typical of so many modern budget, tools - OK for very limited use only.
Yeah, for this reason I stick with my scratch awl and a good push from my palm to make starting notches (I mostly work with wood which is easy to make a dent).
You can sharpen it so it doesn't matter!

For aluminum, can't you just take an old star screw driver and push + twist until there's a small start hole for drilling?
I mean aluminum is quite soft, so I doubt I need this tool at all.
Maybe, unless you're using a harder, heat-treated aluminum like 6061.
You're describing a traditional center punch, which is used with a hammer. They work just fine, but the benefit of automatic center punches like these, is they're much faster and can be used with one hand.

I think Newton's divided by 9.81 m/s^2 (acceleration due to gravity) and you get kilograms of force! So 60N to 130N is 6.12 to 13.25 kilograms of force!
I.e. approx. simply divide with 10
I was very disappointed with my purchase of the cheapest type of the three, it only actually punches when its in the right mood and never when I am trying to do something critical, so its back to the old punch and hammer.
I am reluctant to spend any more money in case more expensive does not equate to more reliable.
You should check out center punches by SpringTools. They are reliable and American-made.
If the pin becomes rounded why not sharpen it?
will be used out quickly - so a rounded pin, can give up the energy in a better way, check the strength of eggs

Depends on the type, but for most--cracks it.

creating "dents" that will help a drill bit go in straight. if you started on a flat surface, there is a good chance it will move from the spot you want.

They're currently about $36. I'm still using one my father purchased over fifty years ago (about 1967).
@@commentatron Starrett's are currently $47 at Amazon, and CamelCamelCamel says they haven't historically been sold for less than about $40 since 2011. They are indeed excellent, but he mentions in the video that he wasn't interested in spending more than about $30 for occasional use, so the Starrett's about 40% more. They're definitely one of the best choices for actual machinists, though!

I bought a Starrett 18A on the basis of my experience of an excellent combination square of the same brand. The Starrett centre punch arrived today. Looks beautiful but it doesn't trigger the hammer at all. Doesn't anyone even test these things, before they bung 'em in a fancy box and hold out their hand for the dosh? I have disassembled, oiled and greased the device several times, fully understand how they're supposed to work, checked out RUclips videos for what might be wrong, and it still refuses to perform. At all. Back it goes. Buying a Facom instead, which is even more expensive than the Starrett!

I say this because truly unbiased reviewers do not accept payment by the products or sellers that they review. That said, I don't see any misleading statements or lies, however I don't find it silly for someone to pay the extra money for a better brand such as Starrett, which doesn't cost much more than the model promoted here, and yet it's long-term trusted and true. Snap-on models cost same or less; and they're also tried and true by real professionals. If you plan on using a tool often, it's less distracting, more productive, and usually more cost efficient over time to just "buy once, cry once" and get the best. Then you have a tool you feel good about that can be passed down generations.

I'll let you in on something. Tools like this that are so called snap on are rebadged. They do make their wrenches and many other tools but not most of the smaller or specialty tools. As for being used by professionals, yeah if you hand deliver to their place of business so they don't have to leave work to go buy something then yes they will buy from you. If it wasn't for their method of selling off a truck charge now and pay out forever they wouldn't be as big as they are today. I like my snap on wrenches and ratchets but there are just as good and better out there.
@@user-neo71665 The German tool is *definitely* not a rebadged tool. They are legit manufacturer that makes well engineered and designed tools. FWIW, Snap On generally contracts their manufacturing out to random companies (which is the reason a lot of their power tools lately have been of sub-par quality. The ones AvE (a self-avowed Snap On fan boy) have torn apart have been dismal.)
