  • We return to the Heber Valley Railroad for a fun day trip in early spring with snow capped mountains and grassy valleys. The Heber Valley railroad, once known as the Heber Creeper, runs on the old Heber branch of the Denver and Rio Grande Western between Provo Canyon and the alpine town of Heber.

    Love winter on the line, a photo freight with 618 on the front is spectacular. I only wish they could contract someone to build them a “new” D&RGW C-48 loco

    Y'all are right there isn't a prettier state in the Union,,,,,except Tennessee. I traveled through Utah back in the Spring of 1988. I passed from I-70 down through Moab and Arches National Park down into southern Utah. I spent a few days in Mexican Hat and there about studying mesas, river systems and Geography /Geology. There sure is a world of geological resources in that area. I was really impressed with the Gooseneck of the San Juan River. That river is a tributary of the Colorado River just like the Green River. Like I said I fell in love with Utah and really want to come back to it some day.

      THeres a great cave in the big mountain. National monument or something. BUt one of the best dang caves. THeres a crater too that you can swim in. Last time I was there they wouldn't let us take pictures. WHAT??? Anyway deep in a hill, warm lake about 80 feet deep. Little hole near the top lets in a bit of light.

      Such an amazing place. The lower canyon is the greatest place. The railroad ends where the turnoff goes up a small canyon to the Sundance Resort. Bob Redfords joint. Such a place!

    Your Western mountainous location adventures are always grand to view; whether they are on a rail excursion, or driving the backroads. I haven't been in this type of atmosphere since 1976. I was traveling as a photographer with a Junior Babe Ruth Allstars baseball team (ages 14-15) during their National Tournament, and the final leg of the tournament was in Pueblo, Colorado. We were only there for 3 days before we were unceremoniously bounced out and shown our way to the airport because the team had lost their second game in a row. While there, I and some of the parents had rented a 15 passenger van for a little bit of a road tour West of Pueblo, and back by driving a large loop of State highways. We saw high snowcapped mountains in the distance, and beautiful, but very shallow trout streams, and communities from the old prospecting days, such as Silvercreek. What a sleepy little community it was then. I suppose it hasn't changed much since. We went through Canon City, the Western movie street scene set, and passed by state prison. Spent some time at the Royal Gorge. And then lastly made a quick tour of a very large place of real estate, which was already Surveyor staked out, and some roads had been cut in for a community called Pueblo West. As we drove along, I just had to laugh out loud. We've all heard this saying; It was raining so hard, it was like a cow peeing on a flat rock. Well, there it was in a field of grassland, numerous bovines grazing, but the weather was clear. Sure enough, there was a large flat rock, and among other boulders in a setting of this pasture, was one cow was backed up to the proverbial flat rock and peeing on it with a very strong stream of urine. Surly, you should find the humor!

    The engine is an ALCO DL-109 which was made to be easily converted to narrow gauge. The narrow and standard gauge locos had the same dimensions, the only difference was the width of the wheels.

      Didn't know!!! Interesting horn and lights. Looks SP.

    • @trainzguy2472
      @trainzguy2472 6 лет назад

      Sorry, but that is actually an EMD/ALCO MRS-1, which was once built for the US Army. It was designed for potential use in foreign countries, so it was built to a smaller loading gauge and could be easily converted to different track gauges.

    • @CoalChrome
      @CoalChrome 6 лет назад

      Trainzguy 2472 ohh, I know that ALCO won the contract for the loco, and I know that ALCO/Montreal made a similar loco called the DL-109

      The4014Gamer ForTheWin I believe the DL 109 was streamlined though.

    Greetings from Poland! :)
    Guys just to tell you. The Heber Valley railroad just bought 3 former Boston & Maine GP9,s! (Currently Pan Am owned them)
    trn.trains.com/news/news-wire/2018/05/17-heber-valley-purchases-pan-am-gp9s. Read It! :) :D
    One is in the Maine Central paint, the second one is in the phase 1 Boston & Maine paint scheme & the last one is in the Guilford paint scheme. :) There still in Massachusetts waiting for transport. But you guys get ready for three beautiful Massachusetts GP9,s in Utah! Eventially they will paint it in the D&RGW colors.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  6 лет назад +2

      Sort of. 618 is s-l-o-w-l-y coming together. They say later this year. So I figure early next year. One would HOPE well before the 4014 Big Boy comes in May.

    Do they still run steam?

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  6 лет назад +2

      Yes, and no. Both locomotives are torn down, 618 is almost back. Should be back in July or so. The Big Boy, 4014 will be in Salt Lake for the May 10 2019 150th anniversary of the UP golden spike, so they really need to have 618 ready for that. The Great Western loco is all torn down as well, still needs its fire box rebuilt, but everything else is done on that one too. But still a year or two away. Be GREAT to have that one ready for May 10 as well, but I doubt it.
