Thank you for your LOVE in trains!. And the History and great things you provide. grew up close to Heber Utah and rode 618 a couple of times as a kid. I've procrastinated in ways cuz I've WANTED to wait for 618 to be restored - but because of your videos, we made that historical trip to pay forward for Heber. what a Great day!! PLEASE KEEP US POSTED WHEN 618 WILL ROLL OUT!!!!!
Looks like a neat ride if I ever get out west one of these days on mine bucket list! Between Colorado narrow gauge and all the other shortlines, it would keep a fella and his lady busy riding scenic railroads!
My home town is in Fort Morgan Colorado before moving to SLC. The Great Western Sugar Factory is still operating. During campaign season, you know when it is the season when you smell that burnt corn aroma coming from the factory....I am probably the only guy in Fort Morgan that likes this odd fragrance ...Your videos are always enjoyable to watch...Keep them coming..
+tjorgensen2007 Yes always corny durning campaign. But let's not talk politics! Just kidding. I too love the odd smells from childhood. My wife is from Moroni Utah. Turkey plant makes some ODD smells when they cook down the leftovers of turkey parts to feed to the turkeys. Not a bad smell, not a GOOD smell, but a "home" smell for her. Sort of like burnt soup. I like diesel stink as it reminds me of going to the train station as a kid.
I remember riding the heber valley railroad back in August 2022 it was very very fun and and very interesting railroad history of the DR&GW Provo canyon branch hopefully they get Union Pacific 618 restored to operating condition so So it can run again hope to ride it to Vivian Park someday from Heber city Utah
Excellent as usual! Thank you! Well it's March 2023! Coming soon and the best laid plans? 😃 Too bad we have to travel all the way Ely to get our steam locomotive fix! 😉 I participated in the last "HVRR" Photo Freight" in 2010. Shortly after that went to the shops to be recertified. I'm waiting for your video when 618 will be back on the rails! Since 2010 I've done 4 Winter Photo Spectacular excursions with the NNRW. Incredible experience with an incredible outstanding historic railroad! NNRW No. 40's restoration completion is projected to be in 2024. I challenge HVRR to have 618's restoration completed before then! 😃
+Toy Man Television rode behind the Shay on Georgetown Loop. A buddy and I were in w gondola right behind the engine. We were headed up a slight uphill when the fireman decided to "sand the flues." The sanding is done when the engine is under a load. The Fireman gets a scoop of sand (the same as the sanders use) and tosses it into the firebox, as far forward as possible. Thi idea is that the sand gets drawn through the flue pipes and loosens some of the ash that sticks to the pipes. The draft then draws it into the smoke box and some of it gets blown past the spark arrester. It hit us like a million tiny sting bugs. Oh well, all part of the experience. :)
Back in my O'le Oil Field days lived right behind it , Everyone that came up to visit, got to ride the Heber-Creeper", Best Memory was Grandpa explaining how He ran the Shay, I was a boiler/Fireman for a few yrs We moved before the "Jordanelle got started..Boy the stoires..
Great Video.Love old passenger cars.Love old Depots. When I was a kid I would watch the steam engines on the Soo line and the Chicago and northwestern.the ground would shake.Good times.
Schultz is actually a 3rd generation railway men at the HVRR his granddad also ran the line for a bit back when the line first started as a historic railway.
+Toy Man Television I did pick up one of your business cards at the local hobby shop while I was there. Asked the guy at the counter if you were local. He said you were. I would have loved to have known ahead of time, gotten together, and talked trains!
I hope one day, Union Pacific 618 would be returned to operation. There were many attempts to getting it back to service in each year, but it didn’t happen.
Been there, done that. In 1987 my wife and I headed out to our home states of Nev and Colo. and we rode 9 different trains and visited 10 museums. Need to go back and see "new" stuff. Lost of stuff was "dead" and not organized like now..
Thank you so much. You brought back so much memory's for me and my wife Marie. Like you it will always be the Heber Creeper to us. We road it in 1974. At that time it had an old rail yard, station, old rail cars and out buildings. I filmed the Heber Creeper on 16 MM film. At that time they had a Shay that they I be leave ran on there line to. The film has been put away for years. I will look for it and have it put into a CD. I will then try to get a copy to you. I hope this will work out for you. It should bring back many memories for us and you. Lou P.S. how far back did you ride the Heber.
Toy man television. I am going to the Heber Valley Railroad on October 5th 2017 soon, and well I am not going to ride the Union Pacific 618 or Great Western 75. I am going to ride a diesel train, I don't know if I am going to be riding the MRS-1 Diesel Locomotive No. 1813, but I will like that ride.
Sadly I think around the end of 2022 would be a good guess. Steam locomotives are a lot of work and money to rebuild, and the crew also has to maintain the operational locomotives and passenger cars and keep the railroad running. The shop crew is limited so we cannot say an exact date it'll be done. But it will see the rails again!
No kidding. Could have been finished a year ago. But not in the cards. I figured if they had in ready this summer with all the gatherings they could make a mint and get great press coverage. Sucks they are not ready. But someday I assume
Uh huh it looks like we’ll have to do some more waiting for 618 to return to service and steam to come back on the heber valley railroad also thanks for responding to my comment Toy man television I seen a few of your videos over the past few weeks and I’ve been enjoying them whenever I see you in them you remember of my uncle he’s a fan of trains and the last two visits I saw him in the past few years he gave me a few train items from his train collection like a photo of N&W 611 from 1986 in 2016, a Bachmann model of a class j locomotive along with a auxiliary water tender, Chessie system locomotive that has stickers, a dvd Caset tapes from the 90s and a chessie stystem caboose. I hope you do well in the future and good luck with your channel
Awesome. I drive Provo canyon weekly if not more, but didn't know a lot of this. I'm surprised you didn't talk about it being the sheep shipping capitol of the world.
I've been in there before were the steam engines are getting rebuilt we'll I was lucky to get in there because I was aloud to go in there with my grandpa during Christmas
Good program/story! You do a clear and concise narration. Also, you must be using a good camera as the images are very crisp showing the fine details in each show even on overcast days. The story you did showing the ride from Chama to Antonita during the fall was very impressive. It is also great to see husband and wife with the same interests and having lots of fun together.
i heard that eventually that they want to restore the 0-6-0 to operation. for excursion service and to demonstrate what it was like back then to see them do yard switching and such. when this will happen.... they have not said. but they have said that they want to see her operate.
I’m not sure if this is true or not because we know that No. 300 currently has been cosmetically restored back to it’s old Columbia Steel Corporation livery again. And it’s probably too small to pull the heavy passenger trains.
It’s a nice railroad, but it isn’t the same without UP 618 or Great Western 75 rumbling across the tracks. Hopefully soon they’ll get those too locos back up and running again
Sort of. Been in film from the 60's but as a sound guy. But been in films at times and had much fun with all of that. Taught film for 25 years too and teaching is sort of like presenting. Sort of.
i remember seeing the heeber railroad when in utah for a family wedding. super cool railroad, although for time reasons i was not able to ride on it :(
+Calvin Witt When you get back... Salt Lake is unavoidable, God knows some people try. But a true crossroads. ANYWAY, 618 will be back in the fall. Come back!!
Oh gosh don't get me started on SLC... that said it would be pretty cool to go back! I know The Piano Guys used the Heber Creeper (...) in their bourne music mashup.
INTERESTING STORY behind the Piano Guys. John is from the hood here, and "jambed" with my mom at the "ward". I want to do their story as a show, but can't get rights. Sony... BUT what a story!! The Piano Guys was a piano store in St George and John wandered in to see if he could get a piano for the day to practice for a gig he had there that evening. One of the guys there wrote music. One made videos. One played cello. By that evening the 4 were "The Piano Guys". First video went viral.
No way! That is seriously awesome. Curious where your "hood" is :P? I remember when i was introduced to their videos I found it super interesting how they were a small group of guys yet they can do some insane musical creations!
Foothill area in Salt Lake. 1700 so Foothill. The "ward" is Monument Park 8th. About 500 people. John moved. St george is their base, yet they get around.
The Heber Creeper was run as "The Deer Creek Scenic Railroad" during the bankruptcy hearings by a friend of ours and he was very successful, but the courts gave it back to the Heber Creeper group despite several people fighting that decision. SP 1744 which was run by the Deer Creek group sold that engine and a few other locomotives they had purchased and restored to keep the Heber Creeper group from destroying that equipment. It was sad to see the Corrine Depot looking so sad, the Deer Creek group had totally restored it and was using it as their base of operations. Carl
i think 1744 is on the Rio grande scenic railroad with the former Grand Canyon 2-8-0 18 and 20. they are restoring the 1744... ( last time i checked... but that was in 2012.) they want to see her and 20 in operation. but main concern is 1744 first.
Toy Man Television yeah I would love to see her back. She is the only representing SP 2-6-0 to operate in my life time and I am 23. She also has a good track record of being restored to operation. No pun intended.
+RaritanRiverRailroadFan4 That would be great. I'm always blown away by the fact that steam was still being used in normal service right up to the time when man walked on the moon.
+ScottyRockTrains It is a FM Trainmaster. I have ridden behind it and looked it over closely at the Vivian Park turn around point. Also had the opportunity to ride behind 618 several years back pulling the train in reverse.
That was the last I had seen her as well. Before that it was on the New Orleans and Gulf Coast owned by Rio Grande And Pacific. Iowa Pacific owns the San Luis and Rio Grande
I have been trying to find information about that little switch locomotive, and there is practically nothing on the internet. Shame that it will probably never run.
+Parker Wilson they actually want to restore her to operation eventually. but it is gonna be some time. they want to use her as a demonstration for what it was like switching in the yard and to do excursions but no time frame has been given.
+Jacob Morgan Anything is posable. Whale its in HORID shape, anything can be fixed. But the time and money are an issue. And if they had both, I think they would spend both on 75. Or buy something else to run on the line. Not a switcher. YET, the interest is there, AND if a group formed jut to do this it would get done.
Can’t wait for the 75 to be brought back. I wish the 90 was with it. As much as I love what the Strasbourg is doing, they should have kept the extra-length smoke box. It looked better that way.
you know, its fun looking back at these videos. It gives me much nostalgia and I cant wait for 618 to return into service
Some day…

+sillywesties Fun in the summer when they take steam down the canyon.
This has been on my bucket list list I was 7 yrs old, once again great video!
618 will be back SOON! and we will cover that here. Stay tuned and then find a way to get there!!

We rode the Creeper up the canyon back in 1978. My wife drove up and met us at the top. It was steam powered back then.

Glad to see they're using the old Rio Grande "Speed Lettering" on their rolling stock and power.
+tom7601 And UP on 618. UP required them to keep UP paint as a part of giving the engine back in the 60's
+Toy Man Television: Seems like a fair request. It helps to maintain its heritage...
looks good too

Yes, SP 1744. Wonderful little locomotive
+Carl Sorensen Miss 1744. I have some good VHS of here at Heber. With 618.
That locomotive is at the Niles Canyon Railway undergoing restoration back to operation.
I was in Salt Lake last month and so wanted to take that Monday night excursion. I just didn't have time to work it in. Thanks for sharing!!
