    I'm 70 years old and have been riding bicycles since I was in my teens. Back then, bicycle helmets didn't exist. In 1975 I was hit by a car and ended up in a coma. In 1980 I received a settlement and used the money to ride a bicycle around the world. I have since been riding regularly. About 5+ years ago, I was diagnosed with Parkinson's, which has affected my balance. It was then that I switched to a recumbent trike and have upgraded to one with electric boost. Although my riding has changed over the years, I still love to ride. When my life comes to an end, I want to look back at it and say "Wow, What a Ride!"

    Mr. Russ, thank you for your honesty and being sincere with all your comments, I honestly look forward to viewing all your ebike videos, I’m a big follower of your RUclips videos.. it’s really enjoyable for me to watch you riding around your city of Chicago on the bike path as well as occasional street rides. Most of all I like very much your humor and your laughter, it sounds and looks like your having a good time while riding your Honda gold wing , I like the way you have your bike setup with your front and rear racks with all your gear needed with you…
    I’m having a rad 6 plus delivery on May 2 2022, I’m a 67 plus young man and I’m hoping that I’ll be able to handle it once I start riding it, I’ve never been on a ebike before.. this will be my first time riding one,, wish me luck!!! Thank you again for all your informative and advice when riding a bike, you have inspired me to buy one an I hope I have as much fun as you are riding yours, Mr Russ.😊
    Keep up the enjoyable RUclips videos 😊
    Sincerely yours, Rickey Morrison, Austin Texas

      Good luck with your new ebike - I'm 70 (next month - May) and I'm thinking of getting an ebike too. Russ's comments have helped me alot - thanks Russ - and I'd like to hear about your experience, too - Rickey. Also - thanks for the positive encouraging comment to Russ about his videos - it's good to see nowadays - (what with sooo many negative nitpicky comments that emerge here 'n there.)

    One of the 11% subscribers here :) . The problem these days is there are far too many "karens" (often called SAPs: Self Appointed important Person), always offering their two bits about anything and everything they dislike, or don't understand, just for the sake of complaining. They're also known as keyboard warriors or commandos. Ignore them and make your videos. And keep laughing, the world needs more of it, imo.

    Russ, it's the internet, the place where everyone's opinion is welcome, whether you like it or not. Cue sarcastic eyes rolling...
    Like you, I'm a man of a 'certain age', but I'm fortunate (so far) not to have surgeries or other limitations as such, just out of shape and aging. I decided to buy an e-bike because I need to get out of the house (lockdown sux) and get more exercise than just walking to and from my truck. I decided on a cruiser/Fat tire bike that I can take off road as well as on city bike lanes. I'm less than a mile away from a state and national park with fire roads and trails that are spectacular. It's an 18 mile round-trip ride to the Pacific coast and back. C'mon!
    I got the bike a week 1/2 ago and put 45 miles on it the first day 1/2! So fun and easy to ride I got carried away. Took me out for 3 days recovery though. I went out again the next couple days into the nearby off-road trails and had a blast. The bike is going to fit the bill just fine once I dial it all in. So excited! However, I definitely got attitude from a few MTB's for simply existing in their space. Even laughed at out loud by one knuckle-dragger. I am apparently one of the 'unclean' in their world. Like a lot of people today, it seems some haven't noticed the world has changed and they will need to share the fun. There is a bias against me (on an e-bike) that I did not see coming. It's not everyone, but it is very noticeable. Have you experienced this too? I'm preparing for more, but remain happily committed to not letting the negative nabobs harsh my bliss. I'm back on a bicycle for the first time in decades and It's awesome.
    I appreciate your advice and insights, especially because we've experienced the same decades. Keep it real, keep it Russ, and this channel will do just fine.

    I am amazed that people comment things like "you have too much stuff". It is none of their business what you carry. I think most ebike riders are conscientious and reasonable and aware. I enjoy your videos when you ride along and talk to us. It is nice that you answer folks questions. I don't think I would bother if I had a RUclips channel. Lol. For the record I ride about 11 to 15 miles per hour. I ride with someone who has an ebike with no throttle and low wattage. I end up coasting a lot while she pedals! My bike has a throttle and a 500 watt motor. I am going to ride at whatever speed is comfortable for me! You DO NOT give ebike riders a bad name. For goodness sakes. I roll through stops too if possible. Happy riding, Russ.

      I'm going to be a rider with too much stuff on his bike like Russ does. My last motorcycle was a Yamaha Venture 1300. It's like a Goldwing. The Magicycle Deer I got just before Christmas is already starting to look like one. Two mirrors that came off my spare Venture. There isn't any more room on the handlebar so I will need an extender or perhaps a BMX handlebar just to add a phone mount. That's just for the cockpit.
      I bought front and rear baskets with the bike but still need panniers and cargo bags. After buying necessities like tools and inner tubes, etc I can't afford a proper cycle helmet so l expect to be wearing my HJC fullface modular helmet until at least the summer. Or perhaps until I can't stand the comments. 😂

    What do you think of some ways to speed up an ebike:
    -Add a front motor.
    -Modify the controller (solder board hot wires and shunts.
    -Upgrade/replace the controller
    -Change to higher voltage batteries.
    -Thicken the main wire from hub to controller.
    -Change to actual motorcycle tire, more weight but much higher pressure.
    New ebike owner looking to speed up.

      If you want to go super fast (and illegal in most places), there are a bunch of higher end ebikes that you can fairly trivially jailbrake to make them illegal (they sell legal, you do your thing). People get Sur Rons, Onyxs, or grizzlies to go stupid fast. There are also a ton of fun scooters that'll fly.

    Hi from Australia! Here, we’re at the start of a winter, so riding is off the agenda for a few months. I’m 74 and have decided to replace the push bike with an electric one. This winter is for research - I’m aiming for a step-through (balance issues when throwing a get over the seat to mount and dismount) and for as big a battery as I can afford. Your videos have been highly motivational. Most of the concerns you address are universal. Here we are speed limited to 25kph on an e-bike and most bikes as sold don’t have a twist throttle. We’re allowed (in my State at least) to ride on footpaths (sidewalks to you!) but not in city centre areas). As to riding speed, safety is the over-riding consideration, and our stamina (and ability to make timely decision) is related to our level of fitness - but a video will always make you appear to be going faster than you actually are. Please keep the videos coming and continue to be patient with those who might feel the urge to be critical 😊 Mike

      Thanks for the information and the encouragement! I seem to be getting a number of subscribers and viewers from Australia! That's so cool to me to know my videos are reaching beyond the USA! The step-through ebikes are a good idea to consider. Much easier to mount and unmount these bikes than a standard bike with a top tube! Definitely do some research and find one that seems best suited for yourself! Thanks for watching!

    I am a new ebike rider. I got into it because a former co worker of mine started making RUclips videos of himself riding. I am taking it very slow as my right knee was very painful for awhile. Taking medicine and not being on it all the time has helped. I stumbled across your video for seniors, as I am creeping up on that age, and found it very informative, entertaining and very funny. Puts the human back in fun. I hope to start riding more and pedaling, have only used throttle since I haven't been on a bike in a very long time. One day I hope to ride for longer than 30 minutes at a time. Keep up the videos and just be yourself. Those that don't like you or what you have to say can just keep scrolling by. 😄

    I was a regular bicycle commuter for years, all the ebike helps me with is up hills for the most part. I would never buy a uniform to bike, and I was a several thousand miles a year biker in my heyday. I've done a fully analog 20-25 mph for long stretches. People just want to complain. I still regular bike, but the ebike opens it up, I've replaced lots of car trips.

I got tired at watching a 20 something spandex wearing know-it-all spitting nonsense about what 60+ riders need to be doing. That’s all I have to say about that. I have one safety issue. Indirectly regarding the comments about your Bluetooth speaker, I want to comment on in helmet communication devices such as the Sena unit you mentioned in several other videos. As I mentioned in previous comments, I rode a motorcycle as my only transportation for over 20 years and for the last 10 years with a Sena headset. There is absolutely no issue with not being able to hear outside sounds. That, of course, depends on keeping a reasonable volume level. The headset enabled good communication with my passenger making trips much more enjoyable. Although I never tested it, my Sena could connect up to 500-1000 feet bike to bike. The newer ones likely have better range and more capabilities. I suggest anyone who rides with someone or likes listening to good music should check them out.
    They are on the expensive end but will add significant enjoyment to your ride.

    I think you are safe riding on the sidewalk well if your state or city says ride on the sidewalk , well you are following the law. Just like I do in my state and in my city and get this bicycles are supposed to ride on the side of the road with the traffic close to the curb as you can get I made a video about it riding with but what I would encourage anyone that makes these comments is that they check their state and federal law on bicycles and on e-bikes then they get their answer. I still think you're safe you do a California stop nothing wrong with that but I think you're safe it's not like you're blowing red lights or going 35 or 45 miles an hour where in no state in the United States is considered to be able to ride on the road without registration license plates but the kind of bike that you have and I have we don't have to register our bikes because yours is a class and correct me if I'm wrong class two. You're right mine's a class 3 it goes 28 miles an hour continuous I have gone faster on it but as soon as it goes past 28 I feel the motor cut off thank you for another great video Russ.

    I think you're doing a great job! Your content is every well thought out! Fun and enjoyable to watch.
    Your lucky, in Nebraska we have a ebike speed limit of 20 mph.
    On thing I think we need to change is the size of the motor. For most people 750 watts is not enough for going up hills safely. We need a larger motor to deliver more torque. But that's up to the politicians and what they deem safe.

    • @RussIsRight
      @RussIsRight  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for the vote of confidence! Technically, our speed limit for Class 2 ebikes is 20mph as well, but that is just for the assist level. We can still pedal as fast as we want (if we can, of course)! Class 3 ebikes can ride on the streets at an assist level of 28 mph here as well. As for the 750 watts, I think it's more an issue of torque. There are some bikes that have a lot more torque than my current Rad Rover 5 bike that could easily go over the hills, yet they are also rated at 750 watts. But, it's pretty much the consensus that Rad ebikes really don't have true 750 watt motors as they claim. Many feel they have 500 watt motors that peak out at 750 watts. If that is true, then the claim of 750 is really misleading. Still, I have seen other brands do the same thing in terms of marketing. And, the true 750 watt bikes only call them 750 watts because that's the legal limit to have and to sell here in the USA. But, some of these 750 watt ebikes peak out at over 1000 watts! So... who's right in this? The manufacturer that claims 750 with a 500 watt motor, or the manufacturer that claims 750 but really can do a lot higher, but doesn't say that because of the legal limit? All of this wattage stuff kind of reminds me of Stereo Equipment ratings back in the 1970's. These high fidelity companies would try to rate their amplifiers as 200 watts, but that was "peak" power, not continuous RMS power. Continuously, those amps were probably only 100 watts per channel, but they wanted to make their amps look like they were more powerful than reality. Sure, 200 watts per channel at a lot higher total harmonic distortion ratings most likely! The industry cracked down on this type of marketing and so we all finally got true ratings on the specs. Sorry for the long message and going off topic! My family used to own and run a high-end stereo store back in the day. :)

    • @RussIsRight
      @RussIsRight  2 года назад +1

      No license required! It's treated like any other bike, but you do have limitations on which kinds of ebikes are allowed on some trails. Most will allow Class 1 or Class 2 ebikes. Class 1 is pedal assisted up to 20 mph. Class 2 are bikes that can be pedal assisted or throttle assisted to 20 mph. Class 3 bikes are pedal assisted to 28 mph. These class 3 bikes are not all allowed on every trail. But either way, none of these bikes require a license. Just good common sense when riding. :)

    Russ just love your vid productions and totally relate to you! I am resurrecting an old 24inch step thru frame and just got a 2Kwatt/52volt motor for it.
    Looking for a battery now and found a blue PVC wrapped/24amp/bms+ charger (brick in a bag type) from UPP. The color controller rated volts are 36/48v, rated current 20a and max of current of 40amp. I know your not riding kits but with your experience with the triangle ones I was wondering if you could comment on my thoughts with it. These are the 24amp ones and I thought you might have considered this for your rear rack given you were looking for more range than speed? My frame and the battery will weigh about 90lbs, I am at 210 and there are a lot of long hills here. It would seem like if I got 2ea and use them like you do I could keep up with you on your most recent trip!! Thanks so much for sharing your rides and thoughts with us all!!

    • @RussIsRight
      @RussIsRight  2 года назад +1

      Thanks! As for the UPP batteries, you might know that I had a problem with one of the batteries and eventually they had to send me another battery to fix the issue. So far, it's still working ok. But it sounds like you are figuring it out just fine with the batteries. Just know that safety is a concern for this brand because some have said the batteries caught fire. But I tend to find this is when they are run in parallel or when they aren't safe in connecting the batteries. Now some do know what they are doing and still, they have had fires. Because of this, I'm now very cautious as I charge the batteries. I think if you are cautious and know the risks, then proceed with your plan! Ride safe!

      @@RussIsRight 🚲Yes I got it! Heard you speak of it and love the easy way you are dealing with dual batteries. Vibration and hits to the battery do not help either. Your method has way less complicated/sparking issues etc when it is not needed in our app. Since it’s my first kit on 10+ year old ebike Frame there is still plenty to think about and plan for when upgrading. ie the PVC wrap blue batteries don’t have on off switch, indicators or locks but still love the extra range! UPP said they had a 52V 25.6amp one but need to find the link and price for it. Thanks for your response and will keep looking forward to more of your fun videos!

    Hey Russ, thanks for the informative videos from your experience riding E-bikes. I'm new to the channel and hoping to purchase a E-bike here shortly. Right now I have a 29" Schwinn Midway.
    If you had to pick 1 bike which one would you chose? We do a lot of camping and we don't have any local bike trails near the house, so we have to transport the bikes to ride. Thanks for your time

    • @RussIsRight
      @RussIsRight  2 года назад

      Thanks for watching! To answer your question, there's a couple of factors in making the decision as to which bike is best. Since you do camping and must transport your bikes, you have to decide whether a folding bike for putting inside your vehicle is something you want to do or if you want to add a hitch to your vehicle and also a rear bike carrier. The latter option is expensive. The hitch installation could cost you in the $300 to $400 ranges and the bike carrier could cost you in the $500 range. So that's added expense. If you decide on the folding bike option, you can simply fold it and put it inside an SUV. This is what I hope to do. My wife has the Rad Mini Step Thru 2 (now replaced by RAD with the Rad Expand 5 model) but I'm still waiting to get some kind of folding bike so we can put both in her SUV and skip the rear vehicle rack. The folding bikes are nice, but they aren't like a full sized bike. The bigger bikes just ride nicer in my opinion... larger tires at 26 inches vs 20 inches just make the ride different. But the folding bikes are very capable and you can't beat the convenience. But if the transportation aspect of it was not a concern for you, then you just open yourself up to a lot of options for bike brands and models. Based on what I currently have for bikes, I'd pick the Magicycle Cruiser Step Thru over the Rad Rover based on its ability to climb hills so easily, but I would augment it with a second battery to put on the rear rack to give me additional range. At this point however, I don't have two batteries for the Magicycle, so because of this, I'd choose the Rad Rover 5 with the two Unit Pack Power batteries so I can go further. This doesn't have the power of the Magicycle, but I chose it when I want to go to farther places. The upcoming series of videos this week will be riding at Busse Woods which is farther for me. I chose the RAD to do it because of the two batteries. So yeah, it's hard to even answer the question because both bike have pros and cons! But if you level the playing field with an additional battery for the Magicycle, I'd pick that.

      @@RussIsRight Again thanks for your time and the information you give us Senior's on your experiences on ebikes. I decided to go with a 26" commuter bike "Velotric" so I can ride with my wife. She doesn't want a ebike because she wants the exercise but that's ok. It's hard to do 8 to 10 mph with her. I bought a ebike rack but I don't think I'm going to put a hitch on the camper but I'm looking into a front hitch for the truck.

    • @RussIsRight
      @RussIsRight  2 года назад +1

      Which bike? For the RAD Rover 5, I have two Unit Pack Power batteries. Each are 52 volts, 20 ah. For the Magicycle Cruiser, it is 52 volts, 15 ah. For the KBO Breeze Step Thru, it is 48 volts, 16 ah. For the RAD Mini Step-Thru 2, it is 48 volts, 14 ah. The range varies on each battery. The Unit Pack Power Batteries can do 45 miles if I don't hardly throttle and ride at PAS 2 for each battery. But if I ride as I usually do (PAS 3 and medium amounts of throttle), I can probably do around 36 miles or so per battery. The others vary as well for mileage.

    The following quotation from the New York State DMV says ebikes cannot be ridden in New York State on roads with posted speed limits over 30 MPH. So, unlike Illinois, where you live, an ebike can't go as fast as you can physically pedal.
    "You can operate an electric scooter or bicycle with electric assist on some streets and highways in New York State:
    you can operate these devices on highways with a posted speed limit of 30 MPH or less"
    from: dmv.ny.gov/registration/electric-scooters-and-bicycles-and-other-unregistered-vehicles
    Yikes, I couldn't go very far from my house if I followed that rule, which I don't.
