Pre-Christian times the year began in the spring. Special songs were
dedicated to this holiday in which they glorified the awakening of
nature. "Noise" is like the famous "Shchedryk"(Carol of the Bells) about
it. In Ukraine, these songs are called shchedrivky ( glorification).
When, in Christian time, the calendar was changed and the year began in
winter, the chants continued to sing as a glorification of the coming
new year. I understand this is difficult. It is especially difficult to
understand why in winter they sing about birds, grasses and flowers.
"Shum" is a treatment of an old scheduling about noisy celebration and
the noise of leaves in the wind. It is also a song about sowing hemp, a
very necessary plant for life. Hemp was used to make cloth, and strong
ropes were woven and butter for food. In Ukraine, this plant were used
for food and to make clothes. Same about poppy. In the villages until
the twentieth century, hemp was grown in order to weave fabric. In other
regions, linen was used for fabrics. Everything depended on the
    climate.

Noise is a spring game, a spring round dance game, a spring game of the same name. "Noise" is an appeal to the god of the forest Noise (or Noisy), so that nature wakes up in the spring.
In some South Slavic languages, including Serbian, the word "noise" ("noise") still means "forest".
Frequent repetitions in the text of words with the letter "w" ("Noise", "Noise", "fur coat") are magic spells, for example, to make the trees bloom faster.
Much later, already in Christian times, the spring "Noise" turned into just a round dance, which was performed on Easter.

  • @mentalic
    @mentalic 3 года назад +13

THE TEXT OF THE SONG has deep folk roots, 1000 years long.
This is an electrofolk reworked spring song(VESNYANKA).
VESNYANKA - a ritual song for invoking spring after a long winter,
and at the same time an allegory of getting rid of the coronavirus.
People welcomed spring and rejoiced in the warmth.
The more and faster you dance
    - the sooner Spring will come.
The very active dancer is the first of the crowd,
who began to come to life and pass the spring mood to the rest.
SIYU VIYU KONOPELECHKI - sow and blow CANNABIS.
CLOTHES of the ancient Slavs were created from CANNABIS

In fact, "Noise" (Shum) is a very old Ukrainian spring song, which dates back to pre-Christian times and rituals associated with nature.
This performance was filmed in two hours, on a smartphone IPhone, at a temperature of - 3 C. Look, around the fog, and about a dancer. He is just a fan , man , who Go_A invited for this video.
"The basis of this song is a rite that Ukrainians performed in the spring: they called for spring with noise. It was all done collectively. It was believed that if we did something together, the common desire would come true," vocalist Kateryna Pavlenko.
All Ukrainian rituals are based on the fact that people gathered together and believed that songs have magical powers. In particular, the call of spring was a very important ritual. People went out, sang and so they believed that spring would come sooner.

In general, the content of this song is difficult to translate. As a native speaker of the Ukrainian language, it is also difficult for me to understand certain words that are ancient Ukrainian or dialectal, especially since it is a traditional Ukrainian song with which our people celebrate spring from ancient times and rejoice in it. The Ukrainian word "Shum" translates as "Noise", but the old Ukrainian word "Shum" means "Forest". Somehow everything is so confusing))). "Noisy Forest" - a forest that has woken up and makes thousands of sounds. The main content will look like this: Our Noisy Forest has beautiful green clothes. The girls were walking in that forest and accidentally damaged the green clothes of the forest. Noticing this, they decided to correct their mistake and restore the beauty of the green clothes of the forest to admire it again. In addition, many hemp was sown. :) like this.

The song, indeed, about the Spring returning (that is 'Green Noise', metaphorically) and celebrating it, you may reference to the Nekrasov's poem "Зелёный шум" that, in its turn, referencing to the same ancient roots:

The reason why this song gives a party mood and still feels cultural and ethnic is that it is inspired by pre-Christian pagan spring ritual songs. They were about welcoming a spring. The pagans had fun, sang, danced, and apparently had orgies. Those spooky pagan undertones feel familiar yet alien.
And the reason they released such a song now is to remind people to have fun even during a pandemic.

About that the song really means :) The oiriginal song is very old - from 15 century. Shum is an ancient Ukrainian spring dancing game, which consists of two stages: weaving and unweaving of Shum (witch also one of spring demigods, dedicated to plants growth). When Shum is "weaving", pairs of dancers staying in semicircle, one pair forming "gates" with their hands and all other pairs crossing the "gates". When last one passed, "gates" changed direction of pairs moving, this is called "unweaving" shum: "gates" pair creat new "gates" with opposites hands and all pairs crossing it again and game continues, but faster and faster.
This is an ancient rithual songs, what in ancient times the peasants were singing when shum continuously weaving and unweaving - this is a kind of Ukrainian folk songs, dedicated to Spring and Rebirth of Nature. So many of them about sift and winnow, because all grasses planting during warm spring days. Hemps and vinka - two of them. Hemps is the herb, using for weaving and symbol of female fertility, vinka is ancient symbol of rebith and male fertility, so that's why they together in this song😉
Hope, this poetry translation (not mine!) helps a bit to understand what is the song about!
    Shum
Here is our Shum, coated in green
Girls play with it, made it holey and thin.
Sift and winnow, sift and winnow hemps
Sift and winnow, sift and winnow greenish.
Hey go on, go on, let our Shum will weaving
    Weaving our Shum, let's playing!
Sift and winnow, sift and winnow hemps
Sift and winnow, sift and winnow greenish.
    Hey, weaving, Shum, weaving
    With green vinka spreading thrive!
Sift and winnow, sift and winnow hemps
Sift and winnow, sift and winnow greenish.
Here is our Shum, coated in green
Girls play with it, made it holey and thin.

Shum - ancient Ukrainian spring dancing game, which consists of two stages: weaving and unweaving of Shum (which also one of spring demigods, dedicated to plants growth).
Songs, singing when shum continuously weaving and unweaving is one of vesniankas - Ukrainian folk songs, dedicated to Spring and Rebirth of Nature. So many of them about sift and winnow, because all grasses planting during warm spring days. Hemps and vinka - two of them. Hemps is the herb, using for weaving and symbol of female fertility, vinka is ancient symbol of rebith and male fertility, so that's why they together in this song😉

Amazing track, been listening to it repeatedly (LOUD!!!) since they released it (before it got added into the possible selection for ESC..)
If you didn't already know, the fantastic video ended up being filmed on one of their phones, as the Steadicam had some problem (not sure what, my Ukrainian language isn't good enough!).
Absolutely love the feel of the song, and the video fits perfectly, I hope they can re-create the same vibe on the stage, with a group of people, lighting, fog, it should look amazing !! (already know it will *SOUND* amazing!)
