  • Jackie, Juno and I continued our journey to hike the Colorado Trail tackling what was the most difficult segment yet, Collegiate Peaks West 02. This segment was 25.9 miles with over 6,100ft of elevation. The hike started at Sheep Gulch and ended at Cottonwood Pass. This was a brutally tough hike for all of us but so worth it with the amazing views that book-ended the long two days.

Its's hilarious to watch this back and see how low our spirits were. I promise you this segment is truly beautiful and worth all of the tough hiking!

Some of my fondest memories are from trips that I would have to classify as type 2 fun. Bad weather, tough hikes, lost or forgotten equipment creating difficult problems to solve, etc. I can't say I enjoyed a lot of it while it was happening, but I wouldn't give up the experience of it for anything.

That route looked deceptively difficult, just up and down and up and down. Death by a thousand paper cuts haha

Great section review, thank you. I'm hiking the entire Collegiate Loop in the fall., going clockwise. I have a friend joining me at Cottonwood Pass and departing from Sheep Gulch TH. Do you remember if there are any decent camp areas prior or at the Sheep Gulch TH?

Near the TH is your best bet - tons along the road if you aren’t hiking. Before the TH (if hiking) - almost no options since it’s miles of a descent from the pass above.

What month did you guys hike this? I'm targeting this segment in mid-July but sometimes the water sources dry up by then. Looks like they are flowing strong when you hiked this.

This was right around Labor Day and absolutely no issues with water for this or any of the other portions of the CW.

Tough slog but some beautiful scenery, you guys persevered. I’d rather be wishing I had another layer than to sweat my a__ off any day.

100% with you - would always rather be cold vs hot.

Hair and beard are much longer now, I think a good trim is due otherwise I may be dying of heat exhaustion 😂 I do think your on to something though because Juno and I were dying but Jackie was doing just fine.
