Joe Royle was not sacked, he resigned. He had a falling out with the chairman who refused to sign any of the players he wanted and Royle quit. I do, however, agree that hiring Kendall back for a 3rd spell was a bad idea, but the rot had started to set in before Kendall arrived.
@@MindYourOwnBeeswax i didn't resign either. He said, in his autobiography, that it was a bizarre experience where he left without resigning or being sacked. Poor wording from myself in that comment. Royle deserved time to turn things around after the great job he'd done. I was a season ticket holder at the time and saw first hand just how bad things had become. But we wrecked with injuries, we had to sell Kanchelskis and new signing Nick Barmby hadn't performed after a bright start. Things were bad but given Joe had saved us from certain relegation, won the Cup and took us to a Top 6 finish, he definitely deserved more time. Bringing Kendall back was just desperation after we missed out on the likes of Robson, Andy Gray, etc.
@@81chipper89 Yep, pretty much agree with everything you've said. Kanchelskis was a massive loss to us when he was sold, the only match winner we had in the team other than a fully fit and angry Duncan Ferguson. Are you still a season ticket holder now ? Whats your opinion of of the current state of the team, do you share my opinion that its glass half full ?
@@MindYourOwnBeeswax i haven't had a season ticket for years now, mate, but I still watch pretty much every game. I think we have the nucleus of a pretty good team. DCL, Richarlison, Digne, Pickford, Keane, Mina, Gomes are all either good or decent players. A few more quality additions and we should comfortably be back up there challenging for European places. But the real problem isn't the players or the manager...it's the mentality of the club!! Since '95 we've come close a few times to doing something worth celebrating...CL, Cup Final, Semi-Finals, etc but we bottle it every single time!! Carlo has a big job on his hands to completely overhaul the "small-club" mentality that we've had for far too long. Its almost as though we don't really believe that we deserve any better than just being 'nearly' a good team. Bit of a rant there, sorry. It just infuriates me. 25 years is a long time, I was only 13 the last time we won anything.
@@81chipper89 Hey mate, me and you are around the same age, i was only 13 when i watched us lift the cup in 95. I agree with your opinion of the mentality of the club, its the thing holding us back. Its like we have some sort of inferiority complex, especially when playing away at Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Spurs..ect.... if we can get over that we can match them. And yeah, Carlo has a massive job on his hands but he needs alot of time to change it. Moyes got 10 years, but it took him 5 years to get us regularly finishing in the top 6. Carlo might need the same amount of time. Will Evertonians (or the board) be happy to give him that time ?. Just a personal opinion, but, i think we were a better "TEAM"... 10 years ago when we were skint, than we are now as big spending club. I know David Moyes divides opinion but he created a team worth far more than the sum of its parts back then, it was a competative team that was a match for anyone. I think we need to find that mentality again in order to move forward. :)
Still can’t figure out the reason they don’t show any highlights of the Coca Cola cup first round (both legs) against Scunthorpe, yet the starting credits has a montage from that particular game, it was our biggest win of the 97/98 season. Any idea how to get this footage Greg or people who have replied to this video?
We beat them 5-0 in the second leg at Goodison. This was a mighty 1-0 win at Glanford Park, where we clearly outclassed our woeful third division opponents.
1997/98 - "bwa hahahahaha! Look how evil I am!"
2021/22 - "Hold my beer"
2022/23 - "Hold my vodka"
2023/24 - "Hold my cyanide!"
2023/24 - Down this stella, brexitball is in town
We were so poor. How Paul Gerrard got so many starts for us is beyond a joke.
The main commentator on the majority of these games is an absolute danger
Sacking Royle and bringing back Kendall was a disastrous decision.

This season was just a absolute disaster and how we stayed up I will never know and bringing Mr Kendall back what where the board thinking.
