1903 Holsman Highwheeler

Most people might not understand what a high wheeler automobile is. Essentially a horse buggy with an engine and steering on it. And most people might not understand the why either. But we have to remember before the good roads movement and Lincoln Highway paved roads were extremely rare and "improved" roads, meaning gravel usually, were very uncommon as well. This resulted in very poor and difficult driving conditions with sand and mud that frustrated early motorists. These high wheelers could get over these obstacles better. The cars were not comfortable, quick, or stylish. But they got the job done and were an interesting American design that reflected the reality of rural motorists.
