1:01:55 That chef is named Kenji Fujimoto, and he still operates a restaurant in Pyongyang. He would often be sent abroad to buy endangered fish for $50k for one meal for Kim Jong-Il. I recently saw a video uploaded on Zoe Discover's channel showing Kenji just cooking some stuff in Pyongyang
China Show sent me a while ago, listened to many podcasts, but forgot to subscribe to the RUclips. Very insightfull and entertaining great job one of my favorites !
Jaka Parker is the Malaysian guy who films around North Korea. His videos are great, they show a more human side to the average (though still privileged by NK standards) North Korean.
"A fearful place, a place of fear, of glory...There is bragging, there is boasting; there are haughtiness, pride, presumption, arrogance. There is self-praise, there is...gaudiness...it is a place where one is intoxicated, flattered, perverted." Description of Montezuma's cannible court. Parallels with Kim's?
That's where the parallel ends. North Korea has far less food and no warrior culture to terrorize their neighbors with. It's really just the Kim Dynasty and their inner circle who get the real luxuries besides fruit baskets, televisions and cigarettes.
I just found this episode after watching the China Show, though I listen to Jordan on Apple Podcast. I’m always so intrigued by North Korea so I had to buy Bradley’s book on Audible adjust off of the first few minutes of this episode . It will be my listen this afternoon.
Ask any north korean defect what they have to say about americans and they'll tell you that they are good hardy people with arms and food wide open! There's a south korean channel "Dimple" that gives a couple NK defects the opportunity to experience american food and care packages and they were shocked with thankfulness. That lady would be mind blown to find out how non-cannibal her "enemies" actually are.
Jordan , I remember that heroin shipment to Australia, close to Melbourne. 130kgs if I remember correctly. 20 years ago or longer. Ship named Pong Su or similar
I had to do some quick research on my countries relations with North Korea. It looks like Australia does not have a North Korean embassy and they left in 2008 citing financial reasons for closing their embassy.
Lol I knew people that infiltrated N Korea to provide free supplies to the local people and went back through China I even know how they got in trouble 😅😅😅😅 i was in Damg Dong before and technically went in N Korea territory. It was so weird they all knew that our group wasn’t from there and just stared at us…. Crazy times indeed 😅😅😅
😮 this was definitely fascinating Am definitely curious to know just how much Effort is actually going in to pressuring these dictatorships to collapse?
Knowing what North Korea was like, they should never have been enabled to obtain nuclear materials. But since they do now have that, it means that more resources are now permanently needed to counter them. It would have been better if North Korea had just been left to implode years ago, instead their people are now semi-permanently in a very bad position. At some point the North Korea situation will need to be resolved, quite how that’s going to be achieved is unknown. Else will North Korea be just as bad in 100 years time ?
But, how much does the North have to worry about Chinese influence and interference? It has to be a headache for Xi. If there is a succession struggle or regime collapse and China has to step in, the DPRK's nuclear arsenal would be a wild card. On the flip side, if the DPRK entered into a detente with the ROK, improved ties with the EU and started operating more like a neutral party (think Indonesia), how might China respond? Would they allow North Korea to open up to the West and be less dependent. I think the DPRK's nuclear ambitions are equally as threatening to China, maybe more...
"On the flip side, if the DPRK entered into a detente with the ROK, improved ties with the EU and started operating more like a neutral party (think Indonesia), how might China respond? " That would put Beijing within distance of NATO short-range nuclear missiles from North Korea so it would definitely be a national security risk for them.
@@MK_ULTRA420 I'm thinking a more neutral player. I don't see reunification happening any time soon. But the North is sending lots of workers abroad to work to make money. This is going to have an impact on the culture.
@@chance2716 ?? Not sure of your point here. No one claimed they were not a nuclear power. You are either trolling or perhaps English is your second language.
35:15 I loved this podcast but to imply that we should have stayed in Korea is to unilaterally say Washington should’ve ordered the death of tens of thousands of troops ( an estimated 200 thousand) I think it’s maybe a thought today but to ask that we did that back in the Korean civil war is a bit.. heartless and out of touch.
Okay how do you not know that Adrian might not be in witness protection with the US Marshalls? Sounds like Netflix movies. Don't feel too sorry for grown ass men who make life choices. Save your pity for the innocent children born into these crap regiemes everday of the week...
Jordan, thank you as always for your thoughts and the brains you invite to the conversation. But on the North Korea thing, I’m not sure you are “on the money” . I think China loves NK as a tool it uses to keep the world focused where it wants them to focus, it uses them as a test bed for some tech, it uses them as a blackmail type product to get their way in other fields. In other words NK is used as “the dirty work” crew.
what?go learn history. Nk and Vietnam was soviet vassal state. after the sino soviet split, NK and Vietnam all on the soviet side. Vietnam went to war with China. If their relationship is good with China, you think they'd be in such bad position? You think China wants a nuclear neighbor? grow a brain.
"Potemkin Bubble" is created about certain visitors; your 'tour' is meticulously planned. What people say, the way they behave, what you experience, the food you eat, everything is scritped. ..
It just makes me think like there is no hope for those who happen to be born in such country other than just look for ways of quick least painful death. There will be never enough resources for them to free them self and there is no one outside with enough resources willing to help them. That would eventually lead to most of countries turn into sort of North Korea eventually.
The man has balls of steel though.. give him that 🏆. The only injuries from the incident were self inflicted -that lady flipped out... Which, yeah, Josan should've came up with a less asinine plan.. 🤷 his hearts in the right place!
China supported and created the nukes for an impoverished NK. Which had no resources for an advanced nuclear weapons program. This is coming home to roost. What worked for China was the export trade to the West that grew the Chinese economy and made China a super power. Not the Nukes they developed or their massive army. Basically the West made China powerful and great not their weapons capability fir mass murder and destruction. Russia is now learning that power does not come from the muzzle of a gun as they say in us during elections it’s the economy stupid. Chou en Lai recognized this decades ago and guided China to its great economic expansion and power around the world. This is so obvious that Xi must be an idiot not to learn this being mean does not make you a great leader. Helping your people does. So make peace with your Western Brothers and stop the war mongering with Taiwan and it’s austronesian people of centuries ago.
