Sarangi in Dhrupad seems a bit unorthodox. How common was it really?

I dont think it was that common but no reason why not. Sarangi is an ancient Indian classical instrument and can be legitimately used for dhrupad accompaniment in my opinion (as a dhrupad singer).

      The senior dagars also
      sang with harmonium at times.
