It looks lovely. I have got a couple of little Airfix locos and they look so good. I think Airfix started the ball rolling with quality finishes and detail. Their coaches are very nice. They just didn't quite stay in business long enough to finesse their mechanisms. Even so, they are pretty good I think. Great bargain. 😊
Hello Pauline, an interesting point you make about the coaches, I've too have heard they are nice, I'll keep an eye out for some I think. All the best to you
What a bargain. It looks and runs great on the layout. Definitely worth keeping an eye out for the older items. New prices are getting a little eye watering now. The view of both trains snaking around the layout is a joy to watch. Thanks for sharing.
My Airfix Royal Scot is a beauty. I bought her for £35 and when I got home I found she stuck or derailed on curves and squeeled as she did so. Eventually I discovered and cured her over-wide gauging and serviced and lubricated the motor assembly, and she runs really really sweetly, like she was only manufactured last week.
Hello there. I've just come across your channel. An Aston Martin & some vintage trains: just up my street! I hasten to add that I own a few of the latter but none of the former. As a young boy my dad bought me Triang Freightmaster set, which included what I now know is a class 31. Blue livered with white lining she looked - and still does - just great! Several other Triang locos followed, including the "8H22" headcoded class 37, a couple of Jinty-ees and a Hymek. I also have a couple of Mainline / Airfix locos. They were certainly before their time with regards detail, but I'm always weary of the fragility of the motors. Anyway, nice to be on board! Stephen
Thanks for looking at the channel, I hope you enjoy some of the other videos that have been uploaded. I appreciate the kind comments. Take care, all the best to you
Airfix locos are beautiful, they're just so ahead of anything at the time. I'm not fussed about motor bogies having to rely on the loco end or another bogie in the class 31 being the pickup because they still run excellent without a fault, all wheel drive on the tenders are spot on. The couplings connections they made with the clip-in boxes to clip the coupling in are so revolutionary, very much up there with the modern NEM couplings, but not a fan of the Fleishman type couplings they use for being too flappy. If they were sold today in their current build conditions, minus Hornby using the wagons and coaches these days, and had improved richer looking paintwork they'd be fast sellers, I love the range a lot.
It's good to hear you like these Airfix items. I am really pleased with it and as you say they certainly were good for their time. Thanks for looking, take care, all the best to you
Looks like an excellent value purchase. It's always satisfying to get something as nice as that. I've just acquired a close to mint Triang Princess in LMS maroon which I'm working on now; mechanicals are original with smoke unit. It was £30 from the familiar auction site and included a Jinty with a broken funnel but complete and original mechanicals also including smoke unit. You could just about be asked to pay that for 2 x X04s! Best wishes. Tom.
it sounds like you've had a good buy there Tom, X04 and X03 motors seem to be getting a little dearer these days and some of those advertised look like they have had a lot of use. Take care, all the best to you
Good morning, Jonathan that was a great purchase, motor sounds very interesting with its set of gears and an amazing level of detail they have managed to include for this period, really step in the game up a bit with the other manufacturers of the time. Thanks again for the great running take care . Oscar
Hello Oscar, thanks for watching. The other good thing about these locos is decent flanges on the wheels which makes them good on older Tri-ang track. Take care, all the best to you
I have the same model that I got for the same price and agree they are excellent locomotives for their age. I like them so much I now have the complete Airfix locomotive collection which is easily achievable as they only ever produced 12 in total, that’s not including the 2 HO American style models. Peters spares makes metal replacement buffers and pipes for the Scots in case they get damaged. I have applied epoxy to the motor case screw holes to give them a bit more strength where cracks have started to form, you should dismantle the motor more as the gear box will need a bit of grease from time to time there’s another 5 gears in there. All in all with some careful tlc they are great runners and yes they run on code 100 just fine as that was the standard when these were made. All the best, cheers Rob.
It's good to hear you have a fine collection of Airfix items. Thanks for the tip about the spares and gearbox, I'll get round to putting a little grease in. All the best to you
Bargain!! Lovely to see it running, had no idea they draw such little current. I would advise getting it apart and filing the gears flat, the flashing does make noise and wear. Also filling up the initial reduction gears with grease makes it smoother and quieter (even though it seems hard to think it could be) I have found the lubricant like tar on previous Airfix locos so you never know, it might have more in it and it’s being held back! A widely criticised motor bogie but I think it’s well worth it. It is fantastic in the 4F, pulling loads of wagons with ease. I suspect once you have overhauled it and done your magic, the royal Scot would pull 8 comfortably. I shall have to pop along to the model shops of Northampton by the sounds of it! Great to see Airfix on the layout Kind regards Will
Thanks for the tips William, I'll definitely check the unit out at some point. I'm going to give it a bit more of a work out soon so will report back. Take care, all the best to you
Hi I have a Black LMS version of this that I bought in a set from Hattons as they were clearing Airfix stock out back in 1985 in Liverpool, still going strong and they were ahead of their time back then but still a good model. Especially for 20 quid. Tim Knight NZ
Superb purchase Jonathan. Good bargains are still out there. It runs very smoothly and likely would haul two or three more coaches with ease. The 31's seem very much at home with that very long rake of Hornby Dublo oil wagons. All in all, another relaxing video to watch. Regards, David.
Hello David, I'm glad you liked the running. I'm sure the Airfix loco could haul many more coaches with it's traction tyres, I'll maybe give it a try with some heavy Hornby Dublo coaches. All the best to you
I have videos on my little channel of these scots hauling 50 wagons with ease. Watch out for missing buffer beams. They are used to hold the body on and easily left off.
@@MrSnooze thanks for your reply. I never seem to find the time to record many videos nowadays, but I am a fan of airfix locos and stock. They all can easily be made to run incredibly smoothly with ease. Thank you for your constant stream of entertainment. I'm hoping to meet Oscar soon, I know you have both met. Regards from Swanage.
Hello Nick, thanks for looking at the video, I think things have changed now, there was friendly conversation during our visit. Take care, all the best to you
Thanks for looking, the layout is 16 feet long and 8 feet wide. Its built on an extremely strong base, if I need to get to the back I have steps up and walk over on the baseboard. Take care, all the best to you
On that well-known auction site, they're more than £ 20 Royal Scots running really well too. I think these modern-day companies that make these newer models I've got to start realizing they can't charge these ridiculous prices if they're not careful the price to sells out of business younger people just won't take the hobby on because it's too expensive.
You make some excellent points. I suppose some people can pay £200 + for a loco but youngsters getting into the hobby will really struggle with the higher prices, thanks for looking, all the best to you

Yeah, that's a lovely loco, and a great price. Nice video too.

£20 and minimal work to get her back to a good looking, functional model.
Well done.

I'm surprised a mainline railways engine hasn't been tried on super 4 points
If I can borrow one from my brother, I'll be testing one soon. Thanks for looking, all the best to you
@@MrSnooze the other options are the jubilees or rebuilt Patriot's alongside the royal Scots
