Hardware/3D Acceleration

  • Of all the options that are common across most Popcap games, Hardware Acceleration is one of them. But what exactly does it do? AKA im just ripping off pannenkoek's style, but whatever.
Clarification: At 00:20 the looping videos are not actually the described actions happening, they're just kinda random-easy-to-understand-visual-representations-of-sorts of what is meant by those three terms.
Thanks to the following people for helping with footage:
    courtemanche437#0437 (Twist)
    Frikkinfriks14#5442 (Chuzzle)
    TheMadWasp#9887 (Zuma, although mostly unused)
    Thanks for watching!
I hope at least someone that used to work at the Popcap I love likes the effort I put into this video :)

There's another thing having it on changes in Bejeweled 2: If you die, with hardware acceleration off, the gems will leave the board just like they did in Bejeweled 1, but with it on, the gems will fly towards the screen instead.
Also thanks for asking me to be in this video :D

Seriously you thought the wire frame animations from megaman X2 & X3 were cool but PopCap took this level to even more cool while also having a option to turn off to increase speed & framerate performance.

A bit of parallax i think, if well made can really give that 3d effect

I've unpacked the game's files, and the game takes a rectangular .png file, applies a circular mask, and applies a distortion to make the object look spherical. A glow .gif is overlaid behind the planet alongside another .gif which manages the movement and stitching of the image to create a fake 3D object with illusory rotation. Pretty cool use of resources to make a universal graphics implementation!

its probably just animated assets that move in a way that they look 3D

The original Bejeweled started its' life as a Flash game. Back then, the mode we had was the "Time Trial", though it was called something else, and not Blitz, that came later. So, no surprise that there's no HW Acceleration, because the effects are simple enough that the CPU can handle them. The only reason that "SexyApp" (laaaame 😆) fails to recognize far superior GPUs is because the API was not written with uh, future-proofing in mind. Any dedicated GPU from 2008 onward could run these games with max settings no problem.

Worse, any multi threaded CPU of 2010 onward, quadcore or superior can run these games.

Thank you for your explanation. I really had no idea about it, I'd always turn it on by the time I played popcap games on my computer thinking I'd enjoy the experience. Unfortunately, it made the games so slow and buggy on my laptop. I had to disable it to reduce the lag, increase the speed and have the games run smoothly. Even though my pc was older than my laptop, it could run them more smoothly.

@@notkj017 another to point out is the Fog levels and sometimes the pool levels.
When accelerated, the pool has an animation, the Fog looks realistic and The plantern has a light radius.
As for not accelerated, the fog looks cartoony, the pool is not animated and the plantern does not have the light radius around it

I must be blind. I see no difference. I have watched this video twice, and don't notice any difference. It says I should have it on if it is an option, but, with only 4 Gigs of RAM, Ima leave it off, cuz it can only slow me down. You may want to show more side by side comparisons instead of expecting us to memorize what it looked like to compare.

So this is what I was able to gather:
For copies that do support Hardware or 3d acceleration: if you're on Windows 10 and windows 11, a lot of games failed to initialize because the system resolution isn't set to 1600 X 1200.
Apparently they have to be set to that on each monitor in order for that to turn on automatically.
There are also copies that do not support this via the app constructor with mAutoEnable3D= true. This was the member that auto turned it on if your chipset supports it. Which most, should.
For those that don't support it:
This is usually due to the fact that third party distributors whether they come from Amazon, ea, or other companies selling it, do not give a rat's ass about gamers or users themselves.
Win11 has a completely different runtime system than any other operating system. They are also trying very hard to rid of x86 32 bit gaming which PopCap has been known for for so long.
      Quite ashame honestly.

@@yalekthelembine0391 Yeah, the only solution to this is to use a fixed .exe file, with the risk of a virus. Even Bejeweled 3, the newest has this problem.
