Hey Warren, years ago I had a water pump go out on vacation. The only tools I had was the tool kit that came with the car. (1972 Opel Manta) It took three hours in the Napa parking lot to get the job done only to have the antifreeze pour out the bottom after I had it all together. Because I couldn't break the tranny cooler lines loose I had to do everything in close quarters. The gasket got folded over when I was squeezing the new pump into place so I got to do it all over again. As my favorite mechanic says, " Good Times!"

I know it's extra work for you to mess with a camera on everything that you are doing and it likely isn't worth the extra money you might make from RUclips, but there's a bunch of us out here that get great enjoyment and education from watching your videos. I agree with you 100% on the tools, Warren. Snap on and most of the "tool truck" brands have about lost their luster in my world. I am the son of a HD mechanic who was a Mac/Proto/Snap-on guy back in the 70s, and who bought me my first se tof tools when I was 12 (in about 1970.) they were Craftsman, in a Kennedy box. I still have them all, and his stuff too, and have added over the years, but I simply can't afford the "professional" stuff any more, and the pros I know who are still working have bought a lot of ICON tools. I am gonna get some flex head ratchets, and will be looking at the ICON stuff.
I always had to keep a full second set of boxes and tools at home when i was a machinist / mechanic. Even when I had access to the work place after hours, it was such a pain not having tools at home when I needed them. When i finally hung up the wrenches as my career, I sold off one set to a new apprentice just starting out, for like 10 cents on the dollar. That hurt. One thing I really regretted selling, especially now, was a new 0-6" set of 0.0001" Mitutoyo micrometers. Cost $1200 new back in 1993, sold them for half that in 2003, now buying them used one at a time from e-bay and have acquired up to the 4", but have paid $450 already for used ones not nearly as nice as the ones I sold....:(
Great work as always. It's kinda fun once in awhile to challenge yourself to fix something with a $5 tool set and pliers, just not real fun😁. As a 6.0 owner myself, yes I do pack a fan clutch wrench, quick coupler release tools, and special socket In my toolbox just because 😂. If you ever need to again, those belt tensioners have a cool feature to pull them back, and push down a button on top to hold it in place. Then you can use 2 hands to run the belt and give the belt a sling shot snap when done to release the lockout. Take care
Hello Warren. It's funny we have just replaced our pickup. The old one had been around the clock and still a good runner. But the chassie was rotten and wouldn't go through the MOT test. So we have got a second hand one. Much the same as the last one, but the Engine is a bit smaller. It's a 2: 8, and the old one was 3.1. Ho they are izuzu. We have a lot of MACK Tools. The guy who we deal with has a Excellent back up Service. He really looks After his Customers. We have a mixture of tools. Some are really old British tools, of mainly big imp Spanners witch surprisingly we use quite a lot, on the old machinery that we repair.
we had an old 8V53 detroit genset that we ran on 10% deisel and 90% used engine oil. had to put a heater and fillters on the supply tank worked very well for some years. at times we would phase it to the line power crank it up and back feed the meter ..(not recomended)
I agree. I have a socket set specifically for the guns(tightening stock bolts and such) and I have an 06 6.0 I did the hpop at 220k but now my glow plugs aren't working, so another project.

I have placed fiberglass door screen material in front of the radiators at the time of purchase on every vehicle that I've ever owned, from 1970+. Works well, it's in there loose and seems to be self cleaning as the mesh flexes in the wind or lack there of.

My advice for Warren is to pick up a degas reservoir and have it in stock. May be he already has one. I use my Ford to haul freight when I parked it no leaks. The next trip I when I was loading I noticed coolant on the ground under the master cylinder. It was not leaking much and it was a local load so I delivered the load I got to the delivery location I noticed the leak had stopped. I thought it was the hose on the bottom of the degas reservoir so I added a hose clamp. But I found on my next load it was still leaking but when I released the pressure the leak stopped. So I pressure tested the cooling system and found a crack in the degas reservoir. It took me 3 weeks to get an oem degas reservoir. And yes I know mentioned degas reservoir many times here. And yes when I changed my water pump I did break that nipple off of the radiator. When I had things opened up I replaced the front main seal and the lpop cover as it was cracked from the prior mechanics. I found 2 slivers of steel imbedded in the aluminum that caused it to crack when it was torqued down. I was worried about it but that was about 4 years ago and I have not had any problems. My 6.0 is always working pulling a gooseneck trailer.
Oh btw, on the fan clutch you might ought to swap it over to an old fashioned manual thermostatic fan clutch, (non-powered), powerstrokehelp has a whole video on the why you do that, which is more than the novel I'm willing to type here hahaha. The very short version is the electronic fan clutches stop locking up and slip real bad, the ECM isn't smart enough to know that but the truck won't overheat too bad; AC won't work worth a shit in traffic on a hot day, then coolant pressure builds up and drops rapidly, eventually takes out a pump seal or a tank or a radiator - just something to be aware of that not many people seem to know about on any of the Fords with an electronic fan clutch. Technically they list it as a $350 100,000 mile consumable service item. You'll get a fan clutch code if you swap to an older manual type but it's worth the trouble
Had a friend of mine who's a mechanic in at a shop on Fargo ND, had a 2012 6.7 diesel come in from bnsf railroad with the primary water pump leaking. No other shop in Fargo would tackle the job other than Ford dealer & they said 3 weeks out. Anyway long story longer he did the job
Great video. I love when you work on the 6.0's. I have an 04 and I like knowing how to diagnose and fix my truck before I have to figure it out myself in a pinch.
Great Video, Warren. My Friend has a couple 6.0L Fords and they have been decent trucks. He bought a used 550 that was a problem for a while. More power than a 7.3.
30 years ago I bought a small set of ratchets, sockets, combination wrenches, screw drivers Allen keys and a set of needle nose pliers and side cutters from Northern Tool made by crescent... Handiest tool set ever... I think back then I paid $60.. I think it's about $120 now... I still think it's a damn good buy

I would highly recommend replacing the head gaskets with the upgraded version and while your in there change those efn ford head bolts with ARP studs. I learned that lesson on the first two that I owned
Had an 04 F550 and it never missed a beat, did the updates on it, clean the cooler once every couple years, replaced injectors as they needed, fuel pressure mod but it was derated (C/C feature) and never missed a beat for 250k miles, then a volvo missile took out the frame. It did spin the HPOP, but all that needed was a new plug installed and a few pilot point set screws to line it all back up.
Glad you didn’t get stranded on the road buddy you can’t get a break that’s how my life works too bust my butt working on others stuff and every free minute I gotta fix my stuff lol thanks for sharing
Love my 6.0, body is rotted out now though. 03 with 305,000 never touched the motor till it had 200,000 (hpop blew seal) then injectors at 230,000. Motor is stock except egr delete when we did the hpop (no trouble ever with the egr we were just there). Never chipped it, still has original head gaskets and bolts, original turbo and trans too. Been a good farm truck bought it brand new!
I like the ICON stuff as well. The only problem I have had is the soft handle ratchets aren't quite good enough. the steel doesn't run all the way up and I split the handle. :-) I did have a cheater pipe extension on it but . . . Took it back, said can I have a steel handle one instead as a replacement. No argument, just swapped them out.
Those Chief air hammer chisels are actually pretty good, I was surprised. I have had good luck with the mayhew old forge air hammer accessories and they are made in the usa. Most of autozone duracrap waterpumps are made by GNB and I have never had one last more then 2 years on any vehicle I have installed them on.
I have an 06 6.0 F350 and it's only done 130k but the problem is a) the rust, and b) the eternally seizing rear calipers. Changed out the flexible tubes and no help. Been through 3 calipers per side and they last less than a year before sticking. Fresh fluid of course. Looking at ssbc calipers so long as they warranty them not to seize
Some of those gloves are frustratingly weak. I find putting another straight over the top works again for a while. As you know changing it completely is almost impossible once your hand gets sweaty!
Used to see a lot of those plastic impellors fail on the BMWs a few years ago once you had fitted a factors metal one you could forget about it. Snap On is so dependant on the dealer we used to have a ace one you broke it you got a new one but then he sold his franchise and the new bloke was terrible didn't want to replace anything, the Mac Tools bloke couldn't believe his luck, we ended up with quite a bit of Mac Tools gear and he was sound too.

I have a 2003 that was right at the beginning of production. I've put a TON of money in it to update everything because its not worth anything not running and you can't replace it for what you can fix it for so you just bend over and take it but it does good now. I pull the guts out of it hauling equipment and she keeps chugging along but I know what you mean when you talk about junk 03s
I got to the point that I had done so much , with so little , for so long , I felt like I could do anything with nothing. Semi joking there but I understand doing jobs like that, FYI , if you own or at least have access to a leaf blower you'd be amazed at how much clean up you can do on radiators , oil coolers , A/C condensers/evaporators , large air filters , and heater cores. I've even used one to blow out the cab of a truck , under the seat and dash. Mac makes better tools than snap-on does. Tougher ratchets for sure.
Hey Warren, I like it when you fix your vehicle. I was always told that you should never buy a vehicle off of a mechanic as they were never fixed and I’ve known a couple that way. But I just think it’s because they are always fixing other peoples pieces of shit and don’t have time to properly work on their own. Great job getting that fixed. Thanks for sharing this video.

Warren, I was an aviation machinist mate 3rd class. I didn’t work in my rate. I was a plane captain in VA-42, A6 Intruders, NAS Oceana, Va. Beach, Va. I was on 3 carriers for carrier qualifications for pilots, CVA 62 Independence , CVA 42 Franklin Delano Roosevelt & CVS 16 Lexington. I was in from Oct. 18, 1971 to Aug. 15, 1975. Got an early out to go to votech school (carpentry).
I have my main garage with every tool you could need but I have two more garages attached to the house upstairs and downstairs. Slowly i have outfitted the house garages with compressors and tool sets. I hate walking to the main garage for one tool. I kinda have a lazy streak but my main garage has all Snap On Tools and I told the dealer everything in that monster box is a hammer except the screwdrivers and they are punches and chisels. He never questions anything I present for warranty. 😂
The second time the heads came off my 06 6.0, I sent it down the road. EGR delete, new turbo, ARP head studs, head gaskets twice. If you don't tow heavy loads, they are probably fine.
ive probably spent 10k on keeping my 6.0 going. Lucky to find a couple of people in the Portland area who know them. Beats DEF and emissions, thats for sure.
I would like a quiet big air compressor in my shop. I would like two sets os Stanley hammers; that they do not make any more. My father said not to buy a wrench set without a 3/4". I like Milton for air pressure gauge and air fittings.
The last time I broke the gears out of my 1/2 ratchet, the Snap On man asked how I was using it when it broke? I told him I was standing on it and jumped up and down. He looked at me and put it back together. I told him I would buy the gear set. He said N/C.

I got to give sears credit where credit is due. I had the plastic crack on a set of T-Allen wrenches that were about 30 years old. I called sears and they sent me out a new set. I still can't believe that.
Not trying to bust your hump here brother but it looks like you only tighten three of the four water pump bolts. I could be mistaken you may want to rewatch your video to make sure but anyway this was fun...
On the second bolt he dropped the socket while tightening. After he picks it up, he finishes number two and slides right to number three. You may want to watch that sequence again.
Had a 05 6.0 f350. Was a decent truck. Still suffered from ficm, hpop, injector issues but it lasted a long time. Then bought a 06 f250 6.0 and it didnt make it to 160000km. Which is less then 100000 miles. Was absolutely garbage. In my opinion if you get a lariat 05-07 they are way better trucks, if you get a xlt or xl 6.0 they are just no matter what year. Idk what the trim package has to do with the motor but i swear its the truth. If you want a good 6.0 get a lariat trim.
I drive a 6.0 too Warren. It’s an 06 with 263000. I just got done doing an injector last week. They really aren’t bad if you do the maintenance on them and understand them. I’d love a newer diesel pickup but they’re just too pricey right now.
Working on a 6.0, not impressive, working on a 6.0 one handed, very impressive! I did come to like my 6.0, the maintenance wasn't too involved or impossible.
Warren you say the 03s were junk. I’m not so sure I have 1 with 160,000 in a f250 and 1 with 259,000 in a f550. Been good engines for me. Just had the head studs done. And a couple injectors and been very lucky so far.
I thought i heard one of the engineers from snap-on is working for icon now. I think snap-on was trying to sue them because of one of icon floor jacks was exactly like snap-on exept for a couple little things. I bought some wrenches and the lettering looks exactly like the old snap-on wrenches.
Hay you need a socket set in each vehicle I do and it;s save my but serval times For 60 bucks you get a lot of the sockets you use on a job. Mine are 209 set SO get a set and you will never need to use it LOL Hay late M x mas & happy new year
My gmc 2500hd 6 liter vortec had the water pump go out at about 175,000. Then the ebay junk water pump started leaking again at 205,000. I’ll never buy eBay parts again. It was very easy to fix though. Hour and a half or so.

I've had good luck with all 5of mine I just keep up with maintenance , I got an 04 now with 250k stock, everything including egr valve and head gaskets , my dad got one to plow with when he retired and had every single problem that you hear about 🤷♂️ luck of the draw I guess
I have a 05 Ford and had to replace the tensioner mechanism. I bought a aftermarket one. It was off on the belt alignment. So had to go to Ford and get factory one. Worked perfectly. Probably could have ground off the high spot but was pissed that I had to tear it apart second time!!! Wondering if you’ve ever experienced that?!!!!!!

for the first timer would you say remove radiator for safety fan blades can get sharp. I had to work on a 6.7 dodge last week cooling fan bad got the fan lose everything was fine i drop the damn thing 500.00 later new rad and coolant seems like the same design
Hey Warren if you have a shop vac you can switch the hose to the exhaust side and use it to blow out the radiator I have done that a few times just sayn"
I love 6.0s. They have way more power than a 7.3 that's for sure. I've owned both a zf6 7.3 and zf6 6.0, no comparison really. Thanks for the fun video. I did my water pump a few months ago. I also upgraded to the mechanical cooling fan clutch instead of stock electric

Good thing you replaced that POS OEM pump. The plastic fins broke off mine and took out the radiator when it overheated. Got it bullet proofed now.

i have an 05 excursion 6.0 , love it. the 6.0 gets a bad wrap, but your right the 03/04s were junk.

Love my 6.0, body is rotted out now though. 03 with 305,000 never touched the motor till it had 200,000 (hpop blew seal) then injectors at 230,000. Motor is stock except egr delete when we did the hpop (no trouble ever with the egr we were just there). Never chipped it, still has original head gaskets and bolts, original turbo and trans too. Been a good farm truck bought it brand new!
03 was the best year. Mine has 235,000 no major issues. All stock except for egr delete.
I would agree. My employer has several 04,5,6’s and nothing but trouble. I’m sure the operators have a lot to do with it.
I like the ICON stuff as well. The only problem I have had is the soft handle ratchets aren't quite good enough. the steel doesn't run all the way up and I split the handle. :-) I did have a cheater pipe extension on it but . . . Took it back, said can I have a steel handle one instead as a replacement. No argument, just swapped them out.
Those Chief air hammer chisels are actually pretty good, I was surprised. I have had good luck with the mayhew old forge air hammer accessories and they are made in the usa.
Most of autozone duracrap waterpumps are made by GNB and I have never had one last more then 2 years on any vehicle I have installed them on.
I have an 06 6.0 F350 and it's only done 130k but the problem is a) the rust, and b) the eternally seizing rear calipers. Changed out the flexible tubes and no help. Been through 3 calipers per side and they last less than a year before sticking. Fresh fluid of course. Looking at ssbc calipers so long as they warranty them not to seize
Some of those gloves are frustratingly weak. I find putting another straight over the top works again for a while. As you know changing it completely is almost impossible once your hand gets sweaty!

Used to see a lot of those plastic impellors fail on the BMWs a few years ago once you had fitted a factors metal one you could forget about it. Snap On is so dependant on the dealer we used to have a ace one you broke it you got a new one but then he sold his franchise and the new bloke was terrible didn't want to replace anything, the Mac Tools bloke couldn't believe his luck, we ended up with quite a bit of Mac Tools gear and he was sound too.

I have a 2003 that was right at the beginning of production. I've put a TON of money in it to update everything because its not worth anything not running and you can't replace it for what you can fix it for so you just bend over and take it but it does good now. I pull the guts out of it hauling equipment and she keeps chugging along but I know what you mean when you talk about junk 03s

I got to the point that I had done so much , with so little , for so long , I felt like I could do anything with nothing. Semi joking there but I understand doing jobs like that, FYI , if you own or at least have access to a leaf blower you'd be amazed at how much clean up you can do on radiators , oil coolers , A/C condensers/evaporators , large air filters , and heater cores. I've even used one to blow out the cab of a truck , under the seat and dash. Mac makes better tools than snap-on does. Tougher ratchets for sure.
Hey Warren, I like it when you fix your vehicle. I was always told that you should never buy a vehicle off of a mechanic as they were never fixed and I’ve known a couple that way. But I just think it’s because they are always fixing other peoples pieces of shit and don’t have time to properly work on their own. Great job getting that fixed. Thanks for sharing this video.

Warren, I was an aviation machinist mate 3rd class. I didn’t work in my rate. I was a plane captain in VA-42, A6 Intruders, NAS Oceana, Va. Beach, Va. I was on 3 carriers for carrier qualifications for pilots, CVA 62 Independence , CVA 42 Franklin Delano Roosevelt & CVS 16 Lexington. I was in from Oct. 18, 1971 to Aug. 15, 1975. Got an early out to go to votech school (carpentry).
I have my main garage with every tool you could need but I have two more garages attached to the house upstairs and downstairs. Slowly i have outfitted the house garages with compressors and tool sets. I hate walking to the main garage for one tool. I kinda have a lazy streak but my main garage has all Snap On Tools and I told the dealer everything in that monster box is a hammer except the screwdrivers and they are punches and chisels. He never questions anything I present for warranty. 😂
If you're ever "in-between" with a breaker bar, flop the head over 180. It usually changes the position of the handle.
The second time the heads came off my 06 6.0, I sent it down the road. EGR delete, new turbo, ARP head studs, head gaskets twice. If you don't tow heavy loads, they are probably fine.
ive probably spent 10k on keeping my 6.0 going. Lucky to find a couple of people in the Portland area who know them.

The last time I broke the gears out of my 1/2 ratchet, the Snap On man asked how I was using it when it broke? I told him I was standing on it and jumped up and down. He looked at me and put it back together. I told him I would buy the gear set. He said N/C.

I got to give sears credit where credit is due. I had the plastic crack on a set of T-Allen wrenches that were about 30 years old. I called sears and they sent me out a new set. I still can't believe that.

On the second bolt he dropped the socket while tightening. After he picks it up, he finishes number two and slides right to number three. You may want to watch that sequence again.

Had a 05 6.0 f350. Was a decent truck. Still suffered from ficm, hpop, injector issues but it lasted a long time. Then bought a 06 f250 6.0 and it didnt make it to 160000km. Which is less then 100000 miles. Was absolutely garbage. In my opinion if you get a lariat 05-07 they are way better trucks, if you get a xlt or xl 6.0 they are just no matter what year. Idk what the trim package has to do with the motor but i swear its the truth. If you want a good 6.0 get a lariat trim.
I drive a 6.0 too Warren. It’s an 06 with 263000. I just got done doing an injector last week. They really aren’t bad if you do the maintenance on them and understand them. I’d love a newer diesel pickup but they’re just too pricey right now.
What I did when I worked at a dealer I would break free all four bolts on the water pump pulley before I take the belt loose
every vehicle I own has a harbor freight tool kit in it, just hoping I'll never need to use them, but there if I have too.

Get a 1/8 brass nipple with thread and you can heat the plastic and screw it in to rad when you break it off .

Warren you say the 03s were junk. I’m not so sure I have 1 with 160,000 in a f250 and 1 with 259,000 in a f550. Been good engines for me. Just had the head studs done. And a couple injectors and been very lucky so far.

I thought i heard one of the engineers from snap-on is working for icon now. I think snap-on was trying to sue them because of one of icon floor jacks was exactly like snap-on exept for a couple little things. I bought some wrenches and the lettering looks exactly like the old snap-on wrenches.
Hay you need a socket set in each vehicle I do and it;s save my but serval times For 60 bucks you get a lot of the sockets you use on a job. Mine are 209 set SO get a set and you will never need to use it LOL Hay late M x mas & happy new year
My gmc 2500hd 6 liter vortec had the water pump go out at about 175,000. Then the ebay junk water pump started leaking again at 205,000. I’ll never buy eBay parts again. It was very easy to fix though. Hour and a half or so.
Only AC Delco water pumps for LS engines I've done. Every other brand I've used failed quickly.

I've had good luck with all 5of mine I just keep up with maintenance , I got an 04 now with 250k stock, everything including egr valve and head gaskets , my dad got one to plow with when he retired and had every single problem that you hear about 🤷♂️ luck of the draw I guess
I have a 05 Ford and had to replace the tensioner mechanism. I bought a aftermarket one. It was off on the belt alignment. So had to go to Ford and get factory one. Worked perfectly. Probably could have ground off the high spot but was pissed that I had to tear it apart second time!!! Wondering if you’ve ever experienced that?!!!!!!
snap on is just not worth it for most folks. you break 10 icons and theyll replace it instantly and your still cheaper than snap on
break 10 icons before you break 1 snap on and time spent replacing tools isn't time making money

for the first timer would you say remove radiator for safety fan blades can get sharp. I had to work on a 6.7 dodge last week cooling fan bad got the fan lose everything was fine i drop the damn thing 500.00 later new rad and coolant seems like the same design
Hey Warren if you have a shop vac you can switch the hose to the exhaust side and use it to blow out the radiator I have done that a few times just sayn"

I've owned both a zf6 7.3 and zf6 6.0, no comparison really.
