It took me 6 weeks to pass all three exams, tech, gen, extra. Watch the videos and if you pass the chapter exams with an 80% +/-5%, keep going. After the final chapter, start taking the practice exams, and once you hit a plateau, go back and retake the questions missed. The practice test scores will jump 10+%. 3/3 first time pass rate. Took my general and extra exam exactly 7 days apart.

I've got the general course for a year made it mostly through the course, but then they changed the testing for it... one thing cool is that i didn't have to pay for the new course as it updated to the new version. Free so once you buy the course.. it updates for free sadly still working on it .... haven't devoted enogh time...

A lot of the theory stuff would be correct for the Australian exam - particularly at the Technician course level. But the regulations would be different - they have different band plans, rules etc that don't apply to Australia. But I'll have to float the idea of branching out internationally for courses!

    G'day Hayden.
I'm a great follower of your channel & love your videos, I have a couple of questions if I may please.
So I take it that this video is more aimed at your U.S. viewers V's Australian viewers as apart from having a "U.S." amateur license to use when / if travelling in the U.S. I'm not quiet sure what good a U.S. licence is otherwise to someone in Australia, all be I welcome you to bring me up to speed.
Having said the above I think the idea of Ham Radio Prep is a stunning idea & I wish there was something like it in Australia because the license training in Australia is very hit & miss to say the very least.
My last question is around the U.S. Technician License V's the Australian Foundation Licence.
So as a U.S. Technician licensed amateur you have way more privileges than an Australian Foundation Licence including bit not limited to
The privileges of a Technician Class operator license include operating an amateur station that may transmit on channels in any of 17 frequency bands above 50 MHz with up to 1,500 watts of power.
& so technically speaking what stops an Australian amateur getting a U.S. Technician License & using it in Australia as such, yes I know not technically right & maybe even morally wrong but Foundation licensed amateurs in Australia are so held back its just ridiculous.
Keep up the great content & I very much welcome your feedback.

Hi Wayne. To answer your questions:
Yes. Over 50% of my viewership is from the US. A US license could also be used to get a reciprocal license arrangement in Australia - but the changes with the ACMA might make this cost prohibitive to just sitting the Australian exam.
A US technician license does allow you to operate as specified, but is limited on HF (just the top end of the 10m band). Nothing is stopping anyone from getting a US technician license and using it in Australia however there are two problems with that. They'd be limited in time of it's use (I think it's 90 days) and they'd be subject to our regulations and band conditions/power - same as any other visitor from the US.

    • @HamRadioDX
      @HamRadioDX  4 месяца назад

I did forget to mention that to get an Australian license they'd need to pass the regulations.

Thanks for the reply@@HamRadioDX ( Hayden ) much appreciative of tje detailed reply I just think 10 watts & no 6m's etc is a bit rough for foundation ( considering even " unlicensed " 11m (27Mhz) CBers ) can use 12 watts on ssb, now could a foundation license holder use ( get away with ) "12 Watts undetected" most likley yes but its still illegal under the terms of the license.
Personally I think the & as someone who has a lot to do with tje ACMA through my job I sort of already know the answer to this but all the same there is more that the ACMA could do to "encourage" more people to sit their license, pass & join the ranks.
Aa a licensed amateur myself I absolutely love the hobby & im a proud licensed amateur operator but it really annoys me that there are so any things that people could do to improve the over all experience & enjoyment of amateur radio in Australia & it starts with just training to get a license & goes right up to a club level.
      Keep up the great work.

So 30 year back had an interest in getting license but finding out you had to learn morse code killed that idea for me.
Now in the future my interest has sparked up again and no morse code :)
So as far as i figure, you have to do the writen course but also a pratical visual assesment of you ability to use the radio? is this true and who would do this (Perth WA)
Reading some comments, is Prep relavent to the Australain rules? or should we be looking to another link (not provided)?

      Hey mate,
Yes you do a theory and regulations assessment, and a practical - i.e. how to use the radio as you say.
Prep is currently USA only. For Australia I recommend you look at the WIA Foundation Manual, www.wia.org.au/licenses/foundation/foundationmanual/

So 3 months later from my first post.
Ok you talk about ham prep 0:31
I bought this and i find it is American based, ive gotten an email from the people behind this and say with us Australians it covers most stuff but not all for the Australian rules.
Quote "Our course is targeted for the United States license course format, so it's focused towards the steps needed to get that license. The fundamentals are the same; antenna theory, radio information, etc. But the Australian course deviates off of the US curriculum. I'd reckon you'll be happy with what you learn in our course, but you'd have to study a bit more to get the Australian specific license questions."
So i dont understand why you promote this when people have to delve deeper for the Australian/NZ rules..
Some what misleading for Australian viewers..
Keep ya money in Australia i say...
Getting a Refund and will look into WIA sight.
