  • Meet Mitchell. Mitchell is a painted turtle with horrible shell deformities from lack of UVB in his previous home. We recently adopted him and hopefully we can prevent it from getting worse with proper lighting!

It's always so weird seeing small freshwater turtles because my female eastern painted is an absolute unit..then again she's been in a possibly excessively large tank for years and has always had her lights and spoiled turtle life. Vivian is an only child because she hates others.

I know that this is an older video, but I just found it and wanted to share my experience with a red-eared slider I got when I was 4 years old.
My mom was gifted this little tiny thing that was only a quarter in size, and my family had no clue how large these turtles can get, especially since our girl Midori is over the size of a dinner plate now that she's 24 years old.
My parents spent hundreds upon hundreds of dollars on various sized tanks during her growth, perches for her, food, and filters to keep up with her waste production. Overall this quarter-sized turtle my mom's friend brought from Mexico (I believe) was a thousands of dollars investment by now.
We absolutely love her, and she's in her forever home. She'll ours as long as she lives and even if my parents can no longer care for her, I will. People need to realize though that turtles aren't just some cute little toy, and that it takes a lot of time and money to properly care for them, and a lot of educating yourself about what type of turtle you have, their needs, etc. Luckily the only expense you don't have to worry about is a college fund for these little guys lol. Otherwise I'd compare it to bringing a baby into the home; they can be that expensive to take care of in the long run.
I'm thankful for channels like yours what explain this, and make this more common knowledge.

His shape is from MBD (metabolic bone disease) which is far too common because people don’t do research when getting a turtle. MBD is caused by improper diet, improper lighting, and poor water quality. Turtles need a lot of care and it gets expensive. Turtles live upwards of 50+ years and if yours died as a baby than most likely you did not take proper care.
Btw- that is a full grown map turtle, that’s as big as they get. She’s not stunted or anything the species is just a smaller species than normal sliders.

Used to work at a petstore and now I have a personal vendetta against the guy at the flea market who sells red eared slider hatchlings in quart sized acrylic boxes (I hear there is one in most towns). People would bring them to the store looking to just buy food. I am going to send this video to my former coworkers to spread the link around, maybe save some people having to give "the turtle speech," as we came to call it to disgruntled customers unwilling to fork out the necessary cash.

Turtles are one of the most neglected pets. I own a res myself, it was a surprise gift years ago (don't give pets as gifts!!!) but luckily I care enough about him so he is now 10 and living in a 150 gallon!
A few months ago I was in a park and found a female res with only 1 leg and no tail, either someone had let their dog get to her and then abandoned her or she had been abandoned and then the other turtles abandoned in the pond had beaten her up so badly she could barely swim. I was able to rescue her and get her checked out and the next day took her to an amazing turtle rescue in San Diego, but who knows what had happened to her, she was also out of water and had very dry skin and was very skinny so I can only assume she hadn't eaten in a while. Please please do your research before getting a turtle, and either get one that will stay small like a musk turtle, or adopt an older turtle if you have the space. So many turtles die early and/or get dumped in ponds and ruin the ecosystem. They're awesome animals and deserve so much

Thank you for being so informative in your videos! It’s really fun to listen to and I can see it’s helping/informing others! I especially appreciate you encouraging people to get smaller turtle species than sliders and the like because those big puppers need lots of room!
I have two three stripped mud turtles of my own and chose them simply for the fact that I don’t have the space for the turtle of my dreams (Snake necked turtle) but still wanted turtles. (And their species is adorable I mean come on. Lol) I heavily researched what they would need for over a month just to make sure I could provide everything for them. Now they’ll be six years old this year but realized I didn’t truly know the sex of my turtles. I knew it depended on the tails, but I’m a visual learner and since I hadn’t found any place with good examples, I was stumped. Despite your musks being a different species, you showing their tails off helped me, so thank you for that. I know for sure now that one of my babies is male but need to check the other still. Lol

I used to have a turtle. I bought her from a pet shop with my own money when i was like 6. The small gimmicky enclosure quickly proves not efficient. We had two artificial ponds connected by a cycling stream and she loved it in there. I had her for years, she was the size of a dinner plate. She always came up to say hi if you tapped on the pond. She was a savage hunter though, saw her eat a cuban anole that was swimming across the surface once. Sadly, one winter she disappeared. We found her back the next spring ( the dog found her!) but then next year she disappeared again for winter and we didn't see her.
The real tragedy is I now know she was a red-eared slider and they're now invasive in my state ( FL). I just became part of the problem and didn't even know it because I was only 6-9 years old.

I held my first snake ever the other day at Petsmart. He was still a baby and he was very calm. Which is 2 things i needed. I was so nervous but extremely proud of myself when i gave him back! I would like to own one someday to really conquer my fear. Baby steps though. :) Just wanted to say thank you!

Damn I feel so guilty now. I had a friend who got two tiny turtles when she was 6 or 7. They were always out in the sunlight in a small, open tank. Eventually they had to be taken in by another owner bc they were getting too big (they were probably stunted). It’s usually the case that the people who get these pets are probably young or are actually kids. I don’t think my friend’s parents knew much better either :(
Edit: I just found out that sunlight contains UVB light and is good for your turtles. So their treatment is not as bad as I feared. But still good to invest in a UVB lamp anyway, if they’re going to be indoors.

I have rescued some animals and most owners I spoke to where not aware they did something wrong and where very eager to learn and either surrender their animal or do better. Of course there are the people who genuinely dont care and use their animals as status or as entertainment for kids. But those who care are out there. If they only did some research, sigh.

@@Edible_Kittens I feel like a lot of pet shops don't make great examples for pet ownership either. Pet shop enclosures are intended to be short-term and only for young animals, but customers don't know that, and so they recreate the inadequate enclosure at home. The staff is often unable to give the right advice on all the species they keep, if the buyer even asks in the first place. Some of the shadier businesses might even decide not to disclose the more bothersome aspects of husbandry because it might incentivise people not to buy.

I grew up in Sweden and my parents agreed to get my brother and I a turtle each when I was 11 and it was western painteds! I super fell in love with them and in adulthood I got myself a new pair. I'm super happy they were my beginner species because of how kind, pretty and active they are. That pair was handled so often by myself that they relaxed into ragdoll mode when I picked them up and they let me pet the head (one of them) and give gentle foot massages, rub my finger on their neck etc which was such a great experience. Fun fact 1, I had the opportunity to move to Minnesota in 2012 and talk about shock when I saw one next to the road as a wild one because I had no idea they were in the US! It's how I knew I needed them in my life again, I super love them. I got a rehomed pair and they called them boys but both were girls :) I had to separate them when they hit puberty because one started to hunt the other and bit a flesh wound in the foot of the other and if I had ignored the wound I think it may have looked similar to that foot and it was in a similar spot too but thankfully it healed well. I definitely recommend people to keep a spare tank if they get more than one in case separation needs to happen and I'm so glad we had the tank still set up after they had upgraded less than a month before because I had intended to create a plantarium tank letting edible plants grow undisturbed but that fell through. Fun fact 2, we have the same canister filters as you do! And same diet pretty much, though we haven't gotten minnows yet however it has been a discussion many times! When these 2 moved here the shells had a gooey film of probably bacteria so shell rot was not far off and then they grew so quickly when they moved into a decent sized tank that I was a bit scared at the growth rate potentially being harmful. I'm proud of them though. 😍 I wish I could have more turtles but 2 tanks (and lights and filters and cleanings) is way plenty for me! Sadly 😅 I love how surprisingly intelligent the western painteds are. They can tell my mom and I apart and for a reptile to tell 2 humans apart with similar everything is pretty amazing to me. The more social one has taught herself to wave at us when she asks for food, she greets us in the morning or when we enter the room, and my childhood pair which used to get to exercise on the floor (because they were our only pets and stuff) and they learned what areas were prohibited and they used to lift their shell and literally sneak soundlessly until caught in the act then they knew when they were the one's caught and would click clock their way elsewhere at just a question "where do you think you're going?". They and these will recognize voices and phrases too and overall just so fascinating. 💜 I'm definitely toying around with their trainability!

I'd love to have a turtle. I told my mom, "Either a turtle or a dog." I told her how expensive it can get to have a turtle, so she agreed to get a doggo (he's gonna be 9 on Halloween, and he's a super anxious rescue who chose me as his hooman).
Still want a turtle though. Maybe once my mom, younger brother, and I move into a house (with a basement, I'm a basement dweller). Even when I lived in a house, we had a 40 gallon tank, full of fish..Coulda had a turtle. We had a green tree iguana, who was missing part of his tail. We had a really good set up for him, heat lamp, stone slab that collected the heat, he slept in a small cat tree thing (his choice), had a bunch of plants around him, had a way down to the floor (he did his business in the kitchen, potty trained himself), he liked to chill in our many plant pots(we had a lot of plants, thanks to my dad). Tony (the iguana) had a veiw of the outside world, he'd roam around the house (mainly during mating season), the cats liked him, and he loved being around the kittens. He had a good, and slightly odd diet...Green tree iguanas are, from my understanding, supposed to be basically vegans as adults..Tony ate mainly fruit and veggies (including leafy greens), but he loved Vienna Sausages, spaghetti, and other things a green tree iguana shouldn't eat..
He loved being rubbed, and liked it when we (my mom and I) helped him with his shedding skin. I never got to hold him (I was scared of his claws), but I wanted to. My grandma (who is terrified of reptiles and amphibians), even warmed up to him and eventually pet him. She used to stay a good five feet or more from him at first.
I miss Tony..My mom said that we might get another green tree iguana when we move..I'd honestly like that..I'd like a snake as well, but my mom doesn't like snakes, or their diet..
