@Chris H it's a heating element powered by electric current and uses a convection fan. So yes..... it is nothing different than a convection oven... use a cooling rack when you "fry" to allow air to travel underneath. Most new models even are labled air frier/convection/ toaster oven. Fun fact, most of the airfryers that are around 30 dollars or so, if you take out the basket and look up at the heating element. it's literally just a stove burner that gets air blown across it. And the heating element is just a piece of metal with electricity going through it to heat it up. Magic~

Because its a marketing scam.
@@flowmastaflam Yes baking is healtheir than deep frying. So is pan frying, grilling, roasting, almost every way you can prepare food. So why do they call it "air frying"? Because they are pretending it is some new innovative techology that fries food with hot air. Frying is an actual word, and it has a meaning, and an air frier does not match the word. They literally just made up a term to trick people and it worked. It took off like crazy and it was literally just a small oven with a fan in it. Something that has been around for decades. Still an excellent invention. Now, people don't have to pay 700-1200 dollars for a basic appliance. This is a technology that will actually help lower income peoples and still work in 3-5 years.
I like Mr deGrasse he’s so funny this is a speaker that should be paid to speak at colleges that should help redesign medical equipment and facilities for the handicapped/diferently abled people.
He's so right about spraying your food with oil! Because it is basically heating the oil which cooks the food that's covered with oil. And you only needed this a light coating. 👍
When I was little I had a Scooby Doo air fryer for just popcorn. Offically named The Scooby Doo Hot Air Popcorn Popper. The popcorn tasted weird but the concept was cool.
An air fryer and a convection oven share similarities in their cooking methods, as both use a fan to circulate hot air for faster and more even cooking. However, they are not exactly the same. An air fryer is a compact appliance designed specifically for efficient and crispy frying with less oil, while a convection oven is a larger appliance that can be used for a variety of cooking methods, including baking and roasting.
I always spray OLIVE oil on my french fries before I put them into the air fryer! It makes their surface a tiny-tiny bit crispy, and not just dry. Also, I ALWAYS preheat the basket for 3 minutes at 400F, BEFORE I put the cut fries, (sprinkled and mixed with OLIVE oil), into the air fryer. After you put the fries into the preheated basket, move them around the basket, (without touching the basket walls, of course), to "oil" the bottom and the walls of the basket. It'll help them not to get stuck to the bottom and/or walls. Also, the french fries setting is for 400F, however, through trial and error, I've found out that setting it to 360F, and frying them first for 6 min., then, shake them, use a wood spoon to separate some few that did stick to the bottom, then frying for 8 minutes at 360F, then, shaking and "stirring" with a wood spoon again, then repeating that for another 8 minutes at 360F, and stirring, and, finally, adding the last 3 minutes at 300F makes them done really well. I love it this way. Yum!
People saying air fryers are just ovens have clearly never used an air fryer. They're infinitely better than ovens. Ovens don't make them crispy like that.
I have both. They ARE ovens. You can make food crisper in an oven by using a grilling rack instead of a tray so hot air circulates better around the food. Drip tray underneath to catch the fat. Air fryers are fast because they heat up very quickly, using a lot of electricity in a short time. THAT is the only difference. And of course, smaller.
The original model, which I think was dangerous enough they had to change, held the basket in the housing unit like a fry basket. _and when enough residual fat accumulated... you could carefully manipulate that_
Air bake some large frozen ravioli. Soooo gooood. I like crisping dried pasta, esp. those tiny tortellini. With the tortellini, the cheese fries from inside and they get crunchy. Yum mixed in with popcorn, nuts n pretzels
An air fryer is a portable oven, there is not much into it, it has the same components as a conventional oven, the only difference is it is smaller and easy to use
