  • Watch Carla’s story. Carla is a patient with alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency. Alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency is also known as AAT deficiency, alpha-1, or genetic COPD. Carla began having breathing problems when she was young. These breathing problems persisted as she got older, but she told herself that with some behavioral and lifestyle changes, they might subside. Then a pulled back muscle turned out to be something far more serious: a collapsed lung that sent her to the hospital. While there, a chance encounter with a nurse practitioner changed Carla’s life. The nurse practitioner asked Carla about her symptoms and encouraged her to get screened for alpha-1. Carla was then screened for and diagnosed with alpha-1 and began treatment. After many years of breathing problems, she finally had an answer and a path forward. Carla faced her diagnosis with positivity and a good sense of humor. She was inspired to educate healthcare providers (HCPs) and patients about alpha-1 and to advocate for screening as part of a complete COPD diagnosis.
