Oh hey this happened to me too with a reel to reel recorder I have, (one with only 6 transistors) and it caught FM stations when I pointed my microphone upwards (not capacitive, the other kind) absolutely something wrong with some sort of band pass filter or amplifier??? Idk honestly, wild
Maybe, I'm not sure. Since it picks up fm and not am I don't know what's going on. If it was am I would have assumed something was acting like a diode. Really all you need to pick up am radio is a diode. The trash radio is an LC circuit made of trash and a single diode

How many things do you need to unplug from it to stop that happening? Is it only connected to power and line in?
