    Just wanted to say i used to think all tape measures were junk as well but that loose end actually has a use. Stole this from another site as it explains it better than I could get into words
    The loose tape measure end is not a design flaw, it's moveable because it helps properly measure edges.
    The first inch of a tape measure is short by 1/16 of an inch to account for this metal-hooked ending. Can you guess how thick the metal hook is? Yep, 1/16 of an inch.
    So when you measure, always account for that metal hook -- especially when you use it to grab onto the end of an edge and measure out. That looseness accounts for the 1/16 of an inch missing on the tape, allowing you to get the exact measurement every time. This also works the other way, too, simply push in to fill the gap and the metal end's 1/16" thickness makes up the difference.

    • @theevilbeard
      @theevilbeard Месяц назад

      I was going to post this. The end is loose on purpose. I find that if I'm trying to do center to center measurments, I use the 1" mark on one end and then allow for it for better accuracy.

    Expert measure-taper person here. The play at the end of the tape measure is purposeful. It moves the thickness of the hook. It pushes in when the end of the tape is butted up against something or pulls out when hooked. It actually makes the tape accurate in either application.

    Aaron, I used to feel the same way but that play in the end of the tape measure is there on purpose. It is theoretically the amt necessary for it to slide back and forth to give exact measurements in either direction. Ie from the inside of the hook when pulling and from the outside of it when you’re pushing the tape up against an interior corner.

    Thank you for showing all the process steps as you figure things out, even the ones you have to redo or welds that get ground off. I know sometimes just staring at it and thinking don't feel very exciting, but these steps are where the important decisions and discoveries get made, so I like to see them too. Measure twice (or ten times) and you get a car that you can drive to more places than just SEMA.
    I think this is a healthy departure from the finish-line-oriented episodes. The journey is the important part, and you get wherever you are going a little bit at a time, no matter where each episode concludes. Keep up the good work. I'm excited to keep watching.

    The play in the tape measure is equal to the thickness of the end tab. It's by design, so if you push it into a surface or hook it on an edge and pull, either way it's properly zeroed.

  • @4thstreetgarageandfab
    @4thstreetgarageandfab 25 дней назад

    Aaron, that "play" in the end of the tape is designed to be there. It is for the thickness of the hook end. It pulls tight to "zero" itself out when you pull a measurement. Then when you push it against something to take a measurement it shortens itself back to zero taking in account the thickness of the hook end. Go look at tape measures in the store and you will see the ones with the thicker hook end will more more than the thin ones. Hope this helps.

    FYI - measuring tape tab moving, I learned this from another video. The tape measure end tab is designed, intentionally, to move. it basically auto adjusts so your are measuring the item correctly. if you look down at the end when it's moving you can see that if you pull it out the tape will align with the edge of the item you're measuring. so you're not having to worry about compensating that 1/16th or 1/32nd (not sure exact thickness of the tape measure end tab) . the same goes for measuring the inside of something. the end pushes in so you can get the inside measurement of the item without having to adjust the measurement to compensate.
    Hope that helps

    Emily and Aaron you both took on a 4 link suspension without having ever done a 4 link suspension, and it turned out pretty good. You both know Derek from VGG and when he was doing a four link suspension on his build for his 32 Ford pickup I think it was he had Dave from Dirt Head Shed come and install it. Not sure if you mentioned doing a 4 link suspension when you did the front end and I missed it, because if you had mentioned it I’d have suggested watching that video as Dave showed Derek how he sets up the geometry for the truck, might’ve given you some tips. But from what I’ve seen it looks like you two have it handled. And too bad the body for the 57 is on the lift, that being free would have allowed you to weld the bottoms of those brackets.

    AARON!!! The play in the tape measure is intentional. The play equals the thickness of the metal tip. That way when you are measuring wood from the inside or the outside the play makes up for the 1/64" or 1/32" metal tip. That's why "they all do that". I'm 54 years old and I fricken only learned that about three years ago.

    The small amount of play on the tip of your tape measurer is to allow for the thickness of the tab when you push against the tab or pull against the tab.. Just noticed on your bracket measuring at 7:49, you are measuring to the inside of the bracket but the figure on your phone measures to the outside of your bracket so you are going to be out farther than you want to be.
