This work takes its inspiration and title from the "paternoster-Maschine" from Fritz Lang's 1927 film Metropolis. The hidden, esoteric, and mysterious mechanisms of the harp are put under an aural microscope and built into an extended composition. The fixed media material was created by electronically altering recordings of harps, elevators, and sine tones.
