- How to Sew a Necktie Skirt!
This is a great project to make with a friend or a student.
It's fun to choose the neckties, it requires no pattern and it is easy to sew!
Supplies:
About 15-20 ties - you won't use them all, but it's nice to have options!
One skinny tie for waistband,
Measuring tape,
Scissors,
Sewing Machine,
Black thread,
Straight pins,
Heavy white thread for basting,
Heavy black thread for hand sewing,
Hand-sewing needles,
Thimble (optional)

Thank you, Cornelia! You Can Make This!
Thank you. I needed to know how to do the stitching.
S K, You Can Make This!!!!
I tried it!! I sewed the ties from the wide pointy end though as I found it easier to match them up and then just trimmed the waist so that they were all the same length. I did have to redo some of the stiches holding the basting thread down after that but it worked out really well!! I also sewed some ties so that they overlapped to make triangles (if that makes sense) as I needed the waist to be a bit smaller. Thanks for the video it was a really great tutorial!! :]
Oh Jasmine! This is wonderful to hear! Thank you for letting me know. Enjoy your skirt!!! XO

Beautifully made, do you think I can make a table topper the same way? Fabulous tutorial. Thanks heaps for sharing your talent. 👏🇦🇺
Hi Helen! I have never made a necktie
table topper - give it a try! Thank you for watching! XO
If a tie is gorgeous but stinks of cologne or febreze etc, before you give up on it, hang outdoors for a few days ideally in direct sun as much as possible. Doesn't always work but sometimes it works wonders.
I love this tutorial - the skirt ends up so cute!!! I just found a TON of my dad's old ties from the 80s/90s and he said I could have them, so I'm gonna make this! But, I only have my grandma's sewing machine from the 1950's and it doesn't have a basting or zig zag stitch, only a straight stitch. Do you have any advice?
Yes! It is possible to narrow-seam the edges of the ties. (Right sides together, stitch and unfold.) You will then have the seam allowances on the inside of the skirt. This is not ideal, but possible! Also you can overlap one OVER the next and topstitch them side by side. Of course, my best suggestion is to ask around for a zigzag-capable machine to borrow from a friend or neighbor! Good luck with your design!
Thank you so much!! @@rickrackruby3500
Thank you so much for this tutorial! My skirt is a little too big on my waist and I wondered if you had any advice on tailoring it post sewing to fit?
@@maecrampton8232 Hi Mae! Neckties are very limited in sizes - you can have 14 ties and it’s too small, but adding only one tie makes it too big! Try to collect ties of varying widths. Before adding the last tie and the waistband, try on the skirt (the best you can!) Estimate the measurement for the final tie and search for it in your stash to finish your skirt. If it’s a little tight it sits higher on your waist. A little loose fits lower. You can also try styling with a sweater or other layers to improve the fit. Have fun sewing, and thank you for watching my video!
Also they had a picture of it.....I wonder where it is....her cousins still around...she passed last year...good people❤
@@laurastewart2418 what a sweet memory. I’m sorry for your loss.
@@rickrackruby3500 thanks 😊
I can’t seem to send a photo. Sorry
I absolutely love this idea! I’ve been collecting ties and have a nice variety now. My immediate goal is to make a Christmas skirt. I’m having some challenges, though that I’d like to ask for your opinion. I’d love the idea of alternating the wide end of the tie with the narrow end of the tie. However, it’s curving. I’ll try to send you a picture. Is it just my sewing or could this not work? I love the look of wide then narrow, wide then narrow, etc. Do you think this could work? I’m practicing on the ties I don’t care for. Thank you.
Hi JoAnn. Ties are tricky because (I’m sure you know…) they are cut on the bias. The longer the piece, the more likely they are to curve. Also, the more pieces you add, the greater the tendency to curve. I would recommend starting with the basic skirt. For the next one, try adding just two or three narrow ends randomly into the mix. See how it goes…! I have a necktie purse design that uses ALL narrow ends and it definitely curves but I have compensated by only stitching about eleven-inch lengths together. It’s hard to describe! I do have a 2-part tutorial for the bag design. Have a look and perhaps inspiration will strike!
Thank you for watching my video! XO
If one came with your machine, try using a walking foot instead of a regular presser foot. Walking foot lifts itself up with every stitch so it doesn't drag on the top fabric, and goes back down just in time for the needle to make the stitch. This repeats for every single stitch, so start slowly on some test pieces to get used to the feel and the extra sounds the foot makes.
Can you tell me what type of thread I should use?
Hi Sara. Just regular sewing thread is fine. I usually use serger thread. Thank you for watching my tutorial!
Enjoyed this video! About the lining..
How did you remove the backing on the ties? Was it before you sewed?
Hi Carolyn! I left the lining in!
@@rickrackruby3500 thanks. You did a great job.
I haven't finished mine yet.
I started a few years ago. I'm inspired now!

I have a question. I am a crafter and want to make these to sell BUT can you wash them in the washer when dirty?
I use “Dryel” the home dry-cleaning product. It works!
such a fun idea :)))
Thank you Ashlynn - and what a pretty name!

Your video is terrible. Why are you taping form the top of your machine? The viewer can not what you are doing.
Thank you for watching my video. I continue to learn and to try new things. Next time I will work on the angles and perhaps improve the view.
don't be rude sybil. she made this video to help people not to win a film award
Thumbs down for missing metric measures.👎
Don’t be rude! It doesn’t matter if she includes metric measurements or not. You still have to adjust for your own size anyway. It has to fit YOU, not her. 😠
@@joanngeer Dear friend,
The americans can use whatever measure system they please, I really don't care at all.
It just so happens that the rest of the world is metric and when people make videos like this, they usually wish as many views as possible.
So by not adding metric measures they exclude people outside the US and miss many many views.
That considered, I think providing metric measures is about the least you can do.
It helps them and it helps us
