Just glad to see Jonas walk out of the hospital on his own two feet. Everything else is secondary. Hoping he has a speedy recovery.
I agree. His injuries sounded serious. He can come back in a year or two depending on how he heals.
That's very thoughtful of you. We all assume nowadays that these guys will automatically bounce right back but the truth is they often have a hard road to recovery.
A speedy and full recovery…🙏
👊🦋🤞
I thought the same for Jay Vine, who seems even more badly injured.
I'm a UAE, Pogi fan.. BUT, I wish Jonas all the luck in the world, hope he can come back 100%... and have another colossal TDF....
naaah, we've seen what pogi went through because of his wrist, it's impossible to be "tour de france fit" in 70 days after such a shock to the body, but that's just my humble opinion, i wish jonas all the best!
Jonas probably can't even take in a deep breath without pain while sitting down right now. If he's in the TdF, it'll be solely to ride into form for future races
Pog has quality rehab for his wrist.
I hope it is an issue for him this year.
With all respect, but it is simply impossible to compare both injuries.... Pogacar was already back on the bike two weeks after his crash to train on altitude camp. And he pushed his best watts ever in last years Tour, as we could all witness when he posted his statts online. (And when he said it in multiple interviews.) 😉
Pogi WAS on form last year. Jonas was just better. And remember Pogi crashed on stage 17 which could be why he had a bad day
I don’t agree that the wrist cost Pog the TdF. But either way Jonas will need some luck falling his way to be in the same shape as last year. Jonas’ TT stage 16 was something we have not witnessed often if ever in a rider of his size on a course like that. 🤔🦋🔥🤞
I had a similar lung injury a few years back. These guys have incredible powers of recovery, but this is a bridge too far.
Thanks Chris. Always enjoy your insights.
Dont see it happening. Its a bloody shame would have been an epic tour, with all the best riders on each their team.
same for remco
Today there are special treatments to reduce the recovery time by 50% when it comes to broken Bones.
Contador was one of the first to get that treatment when i remember right.
Physically it might be possible so it depends on the mental status of these riders
And on top of that he's missing weeks of important training hours, he definitely won't be anywhere near his topform even if he would be able to compete
There is still two at least two weeks (maybe three) before Jonas has to be on the bike. So burn some candles 🕯️ 🤞🦋
Nor do I. There's not enough time to heal and get to peak condition. Unfortunate.
Great show Chris, yeah man, pins n needles Bro!!
Great insight Chris 👍
Appreciate your perspective. Definitely the most unique and of highest quality content being delivered to us. Thank you!
thanks for the analysis Chris.
👊🦋
so exiting. always like a thriller. really informative and entertaining
Chris, Thanks for the breakdown. Always learn from your analysis.
👊🦋
Having a finger dislocation pulled - I can relate, not fun. I don’t think Jonas will start the TDF this year. 12 days in hospital these days is a looong time. Hospital stay lengths have decreased for a bunch of reasons but one is better recovery outcomes when patients can go home as soon as they are stable and improving. Every case is different but fact they had to keep him in that long to me indicates serious injuries.
i don t know if chris horner s gona make it for tdf with 2dislocated fingers
Spain Hospital bill is a lot cheaper then States!
Hospital time in the states has decreased because insurance won’t pay. Get out! 🙃
@@leduchChris can make the comeback.
12 is a long time. Yikes. 🤔🤞🤞🤞🤞🦋
Well said.
Godspeed Jonas.
Fingers crossed that Jonas can ramp up and be in top shape. He makes the sport exciting!
Yes he does 🦋👊
I agree, this is going to be close!
my first Ride after getting shot through the legs ('87) was 2 hours but in my lowest gear about a 42x23, an Old Lady passed me near Lubbock High School (Buddy Holly!!) & she was idling past in her 1st gear, I swear that old 50's Ford Black&White is still a block from work in the neighborhood to remind me how good "Coming Back" truly and sweetly is O/O°
Great shirt today!
👊🦋
Yeah the Kuss thing, hurts to hear but true. He hasn't dropped the big players to win a stage. He's consistent and gains time just be default, but if he's close and tries to go, they'll cover it.
Would be awesome for sure, but he's gotta drop some big players.
Last year he was good. I agreed with JB on Armstrong's podcast who said that Sepp was the best rider in that tour. He was good but I just don't think he can win all 3 of Roglic, Remco and Pogacar in the same tour. For beating one of them, there is a chance
Wout does need circumstances he makes circumstances… loved it chris
I cannot even imagine the pressure ....ugh... it is hard enough having everyday life struggles..... I wish Wout and Jonas a speedy recovery!!! You too Chris! Sorry about your finger! 🫣
Try to remember that these top riders are being paid millions of dollars per year, whether they win or not. Yes, there is pressure, but whatever happens with the rest of their careers, they're going to be fine. Chances are that your daily life struggles have higher stakes than what these guys are going through.
That Would dude sat on the indoor trainer for 114km so he seems motivated for something... Wishing Jonas the best and it would be a awesome showdown...
Thanx as usual to Chris - the voice of cycling!
No offers yet to be a DS or something?
According to Strava, Wout Van Aert road outside for the first time today - 18 miles in a little over an hour. That's a good sign!
I'm going to die of boredom if Pogi cake walks the Giro into the TDF
*when
Yea there’s no if lol it’s for sure when
@@Murda2615 @JohnDoe-ch3qz I dont wish anybody bad luck, but nothing is certain in cycling
@@J-berg that’s very true I can’t argue that this video is proof
I'm already bored this season. And I'm sorry, but if Pogi takes two tours, or even all three, I just won't be able to take it seriously. No competitors means no competition, he's just out for a 21 day bike trip.
Chris, really miss listening to you on the Tour telecast and love your stories on here but buddy, please just take a breath here and there and slow down a little bit cause by the time you're finished by blood pressure is up and I'm exhausted. LOL..... But keep delivering the great content!
He can get ready for the Vuelta . . . Not a bad plan for Jonas. Jonas will not be able to start in TDF. Nobody is going to compete with Tadej this year, which is a shame because just 2 weeks ago the cycling world was salivating over possibility of the Vingegaard, Pogi, Roglic, Remco duel.
So true - it's a shame that one ugly crash at that Basque Country race will have such a powerful knock-on effect for the rest of the season. If TDF turns into another Pogi Show, it won't be very interesting.
First things first, good to see Jonas walk out of the hospital and hope his recovery goes well.
As for Visma, they have some time but not a lot of it. I think their plans for the Giro are mostly set by now. Getting to the Tour is a different situation. I say by the time the peloton gets through the Dauphine (I'd even throw in the Tour de Suisse), their ambitions for the Tour need to be set and build the squad around that person. There's some time but the discussions need to start happening soon.
True that 🦋👍⏰
Sadly I doubt Jonas can be fit enough to win the Tour and he wouldn't want to go there just for a top 10, so maybe he will target the Vuelta. I'd like to see a super strong VismaLAB team at the tour with no GC ambition, just go there to light up the race and win some stages. With the strength in depth they have they could set new records for most stage wins in the Tour by one team, that would be fun to watch.
This kind of optimism excites me AND depresses me lol
But i really hope to see all four top GC riders racing against each other in the tour de France. Roglic is getting old and he may not stay at the absolute pinnacle for very long
Plan B 👊🦋
agree with you! Not sure why Kooij isn’t getting more traction to make is TDF debut. Best chance to take a stage. Sepp should go for polka dots in preparation for the Veulta
If im Visma i bring a stage hunting machine of a team plus Kuss for maybe a top 5 top 10 G.C placement. Bring Olaf, Wout, Jorgenson, Kuss, Benoot, Laporte, another high level climber and a guy like DVB to ride flats and hills all day and can still be a threat in a break. Just a team that can blow up any stage if they so choose to.
If Jonas is out obviously.
Chris, how grading on Tadej will racing the Giro be in terms of how it would effect his Tour? curious to get your take on this
in my head it will be a great tune up for the tour but im not a professional lol and i understand its a grand tour!
Glad that he was discharged from the hospital, I hope he can have a quick recovery and take part in the tour,I think he will manage to make it
Would love to see visma ride for wout van aert though that could be fun.
@@josephsong8911 likely true but would stil be fun.
With Wout, the goal would have to change from yellow to green.
@@ericvonhellens8822and that's not an easy task given Alpecins performance in that regard the last few years
Wout could start going for Eddie’s stage win record if he’s given a free card.🦋👊
It seems clear that Pogi is in the catbird seat (fitness and team) but it would be very cool to see what Sepp could do as VLB’s GC rider. I think folks underestimate what he´s capable of if he’s not dragging Jonas or Primoz up any of those climbs and isn´t being told by his DS to slow down. Punch your ticket..vamos!
Jonas Vingegaard is lucky to have a contract untill 2028.
You always have to remember that the team managers have their best interests as a priority. Not his.
Your employer are never your friend. No matter what they'll tell you.
In this case, the team only wants to maximize the three year left to his contract. The good thing is that a premature return might be as costly to them but still, they'll be pushing hard for his comeback.
He should be careful and put in the balance the time that is left to his career after the contract.
Who knows, he might end up being the next Chris Froome.
The team only cares about the cost of the remaining of his contract while he's not on the road potentially bringing victory for the sponsors.
Just look at how much consideration the team has shown for Primož Roglič last year.
Many professional athletes are not wise enough in these situations.
He already earned more millions that most of us could ever dream of, so even if he had lost a contract, I really couldn't care much...
Kooj as a sprinter can do both Giro and Tour... although I don't see him as a guarantee to win a stage on TDF...
But it's more a question of focus...GC or stages...
Kuss to the rescue! 🎉
Thanks for the videos❤. How good is a rider if he finished first two stages about 25mins(13+12) down on the GC leader in tour the ALPS ? What’s his level? Thanks Chris.
agreed its a tough call for Visma. I think Olav Kooij should be their main sprinter and if Wout makes its the mountain hybred domestique leadout man.
I doubt Vindegaard will make it though to survive the mountains without being humid by Pogy.
Kooij and Wout would surely bring some stage wins. 👊🦋💪
Well...Kuss had two tours in his legs prior to the Vuelta... He also pretty much dropped everyone else... I have a feeling this year's tour is wide open.
Glado to see all the riders involved in crash recovering so quickly. In terms of Jonas I simply do not see how he can possibly get in to the Tour-wining shape this year. He can go for stages but GC is out of the game. This crash just present a unique opportunity for Primož Roglič to win the Tour. Of cours Pogi has to be number one favourite, but after the Giro it will be really hard to keep it up all the way till the end of the Tour. Go Rogla! 🇸🇮❤👏🏻
At some time or other, all riders, regardless of talent level, must have a say in whether they participate in certain events. For Jonas, when or how do the terms "CAN'T" participate in the Tour or "WON'T" interrelate when ultimate decisions that include Jonas, his DS and other members of his team are made? Under what circumstances does the decision become solely his? Thanks, MarkHTurlock
it would be great if Jonas (and Remco) makes it on time being fit for the TDF.....I want to see all the greats competing with eachother on the biggest stage possible!!!!
🤞🤞🤞🤞👊🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋👊🦋👊🦋👊
Hey Chris, or anyone who knows, years ago I watched a VHS with you in it racing in Philadelphia up the wall. What race was that??
I like this topic. Lance did 7 TDFs, but I don’t recall him having a schedule like these guys. He almost was solely reserved for the TDF. With Jonas, why don’t they do the same? Does he need to be racing at this level for these B races? If PR was still on the squad I could see it, but they are hamstrung. UAE is gonna come out on top of them I think. I kinda wanna see Bernal and ineos podium. That’s just me.
I would love to see an epic comeback by Bernal as well!
If we are honest, how does this compare to Tadej's injury last year? Tadej had only had like 2-3 weeks on the cycle on real roads before the tour and we are talking about a potential much longer period of preperation for Jonas?
Tadej obviously weren't in optimal form last year, especially seen in week 3.
12 days in hospital! I guess it's hard to judge anything from that really. He's up and walking around now. I had a car accident in 2008 and broke my kneecap and a bunch of bones and punctured a lung. I was in and out of the hospital in 2 days including surgery on the knee. I lost quite a bit of blood and was 10+ years older than JV. I think I felt pretty normal after maybe 4-5 weeks--ribs healed and back healed. If my leg wasn't in an immobilizer, I probably could have been back on the bike... maybe 74 days is doable.
They should bring Prim… oh.
They could buy out his contract
🤣🤣🤣
Hehehe. Exactly. Ooops. Who’s idea was that again. 🤪🦋👊
WvA has been spotted on Zwift putting down the watts.
I wonder what Cian Uijtdebroeks could achieve in the current circumstances if Visma bring him to the TDF this year.
And what about Sepp Kuss?
I love Seppy so much, but I don't consider him a real GC when it comes to competing against the current favorites, and especially TDF which is a much bigger ride than the Vuelta. I so enjoyed him in the Vuelta and I 100% think his win was legitimate, but I don't see him competing as a GC in many other circumstances.
He is going to the Giro at the moment. 🤔🦋🙏
Chris, admit that you taped your finger just because you saw Jonas's right hand!😂
Dog?!?! We need to see your dog on camera, please! 🙏💕🐶💕
I'm not a pro cyclist, however, take 74 days and narrow that to 60 if two more weeks before full training days. Now narrow that to 45-50 if you include an appropriate taper prior to tour, because he can't go straight into tour coming off of hard training and expect optimal results. He's an elite athlete who was pretty close to peaking into his top form prior to the crash. I think he can make the tour and be pretty CLOSE to top form. VLAB will have to do a lot more as a TEAM to protect and position him to get the desired results. It's a 21 stage race, which I would like to think works in his favor given who we are talking about. 🤞🤞🤞🤞 Also, I don't believe he would've had the extended hospital stay if he were being cared for closer to home and there weren't concerns with lung pressure complications associated with flying. Best to Jonas and glad to see him recovering, regardless.
Jonas is smart and already a GOAT of his generation. No need to risk further injury or show up for the Tour in a weakened state.
Do you even know what GOAT means? GOAT-my ass.
100% keep him back for 2025
@@tonyg3091 I said A GOAT of this, his, generation. And he is one, no question. And I'm okay if you think my observation makes me a kook. 🤣
@robbchastain3036 MVDP mean nothing to you ?
Greatest of all time of his generation? Ok.
So Olaf Kooij or WVA for the green Jersey? ....
Chris will FINALLY see Primoz Roglic win the Tour 😊. Doing the Giro, Tour double will be a little much for Tadej. Of course I am rooting hard for Tadej to pull off the double.
Jonas is out of the hospital, but he still has broken bones. Fractures are really painful. I can’t imagine training for the Tour in that kind of pain. 😮😮
What's up with Natnael Testafion who was the first to slide in front causing the crash, is he still competing?
Some are pointing disc brakes, too easy to lock the wheel in emergency situations...
Oh he can make it, but how do think his form will be? Compared to TP? No contest, sorry.
Given the current situation, might Pog target all three tours this year? If I'm not mistaken, he's already planning to do a double... if he were to win those, a Veuta win would be historic. I'd certainly be temped if I were Pog.
I get it is about making content but there's basically no chance of Vingegaard making the TdF in shape for a good general classification.
If Visma cannot bring WVA or Jonas to the Tour, I’d like to see them go all in with Kooij and Jorgensen.
It also goes without saying that the cycling community at large is thrilled to see Jonas walking out of the hospital on his own.
Jonas will have to overcome a few hurdles to get his full mo jo and confidence back 100% before the start. But he is under less pressure to win this time with the crash thing as a reasonable reason if he fails to perform to the max in the Race when it kicks off big time.
I don't see Jonas recovering in time for the Tour. He might make the Vuelta but even that is probably unnecessary for this season now - better to make a full recovery for next year. It is a real shame because he looked to be in amazing shape and it could have been an incredible race. I can't see anyone getting close to Pogi, unless he also crashes of course.
I think the Tour will come to soon for Vingegaard to compete in top form. The Vuelta might be a more reachable goal for a GQ rider like Jonas.
WVA is said to be still not interested in the Tour this year. His program was to compete the spring classiucs, then the Giro, and then built up for the Olympics. After that he would ride the Vuelta. It's said in the Belgian media that even after his severe injuries after DdV he doesn't intend to change that shedule and goals, and thus will probably still skip the Tour.
As to Kooij: for a sprinter it's very possible to ride both the Giro and the Tour. Because often those guys don't ride the full three weeks, so if Visma has to change tactics because they can't compete for the GC and want to hunt stages I see such a scenario unfold.
Any psychological problems getting back on the bike and on the road after a wicked crash like this?
What was your longest stay and what was it for?
A sprinter can do both Giro & Tour and win in both if he rides smartly.
2024 TDF may be a Slovenian 1...... 2 podium. Tadej is the odds on fav for #1 but Primos might surprise. Vino will likely not even start.
Due all respect Chris, I think the calculation is a bit different for Jonas compared to you in 2014. Why would he want to go to the Tour at less than 100% form?
He would go there to win, not to just ride. If he could recover without lingering effects, the more likely scenario is that he would use the opportunity to tick Vuelta off his bucket list this year.
I hope VismaGiveMeYourBkie will let Jonas rest and recover. He deserves it. One think I diverge from ur point of view, Sepp I believe can make it happen on the back of his Vuelta superjetpack!
Il problema sono i medicinali che ha assunto.x quest ‘anno se fa la vuelta è un miracolo. In gamba Giovannino sei il mio campione. Ciao
It was a decent start to the season for them but I do think Visma is kinda done for this season. I am definitely watching to see what the rest of the team and new signings do but I don't see any grand tour wins happening. In my mind, after all the crash, Tadej is by far the favorite for every grand tour he races this year. I was really excited for the season but all the injuries put the clamps on that.
If Jonas, Remco can’t make it and Pogacar does the Giro before the Tour, Roglic has to be hands down the favorite to win the tour. But, can Roglic stay on his bike? 🤔
ngl I want Pogacar to win the TDF again, but against Vingegaard not without him, kinda sad we will not
Why no mention of Matteo Jorgensen? I would think he has a decent chance of winning a stage for VLB
Jeez I thought I was accident prone haha! thanks for the update
👊🦋
This injury has everything it takes, to be career threatening. Broken rips leavin an unstable thorax and punctured lungs that were collapsing several times ? How long have Chris Froome and Egan Bernal in hospital after their accidents ?
P.S. I don't even think that Wout van Aerts injury may vanish without leaving traces. So will Jumbo-Visma go from Hero to... ? normal ?
Seems like role reversal from last year
What about Jorgenson ? If he had Visma supporting him I would bet he can win more than one stage...
The important thing is he is going to recover..
He will skip the tour
That or he'll show up for Vuelta fitness with crossing fingers for a stage win or two.
Let’s hope not. 🤞🦋🙏
would be bad for everyone if he has to skip, especially for pogi
Has a rider of this level ever fully recovered from an injury of this severity and made it back to top form? Examples? I havent been watching pro cycling for very long. But I keep hearing about tope level riders who were "never the same again" like Froome or Bernal.
Okay I know thats a hot take BUT Jorgenson is on fire and I think if they build up a Team that can support him when it matters they can get podium and if Pogacar crashes maybe even 1st place . Because I dont think Primoz survives this tour without crashing once maybe not bad but alteast once wiich is not ideal and Evenepoel was also effected pretty badly from the crash more so than roglic so I dont think he is going to be on top form maybe like pogacar last year but cracking in the thirt week.
Ediit: He also beat Evenepoel and Roglic at Paris-Nice
Chris, can you make a episode about wether Tadej should try to go for all three GTs? Its sad with Jonas, but i think this gives Tadej a once in a lifetime opportunity to go for all three.
You know I will have if/when Pog wins the Giro. 👊🦋
#99 ya buddy😂. I hope Jonas doesn't rush it just for one race. I to want to see him race but I care more about his health and his future. I think Jorgensen can win a stage or 2. I don't understand why you didn't talk about Mateo at all he is on great fourm. Chris.. I would like to know your reasoning why you didn't pick him?🤔🤔🤔
TdF is a bit more than "just one race" .... he should make it.. his whole year is focused on the TdF..
@@timliscum2861 If Jonas can win Vuelta Espana he will save the season.
I did talk about Jorgensen, I just didn’t say his name directly. I said Visma have no one else other then the three that can win regardless of the competition. Matteo I believe can win if he has the right conditions. Jonas, Wout, and Kooij are the only Visma riders that win when the peloton is all against them. Matteo has said himself that he is not on their level. Come July possibly Jorg is even better but at this moment he will need the right situation to win. 🤔🦋👊
Wow wow wow Chris C'mon what about our boy Sep KUSS! 🤌🏽
I asked this on another channel but could a 70% jonas be a domestique to help get some stage wins? It would not mean he has to dominate to make a big difference in helping the team out.
Could this finally be Primos ... Tour de France 🤞🚴♀️🤞
Why can't Olac Kooij do both the Giro and the Tour? On everything but the sprint stages, he just has to make the time cut.
I hope pogi takes advantage and wins everything in the most boating fashion possible
They all will be ad the start of the TDF ! BUT on how much % of there capacety they will be there ??? To win the TDF you need to be ad least 90% ! ! remeber there is a Pogacar who also can ride a TT ...
Visma still has Kuss, Van Aert and Jorgenson if Vingegaard doesn't make it. It may not be enough to cope with Pogacar and Roglic, so a sprinter in the team like Kooij will make a difference but not for the GC.
you keep saying that they 'got ride of Primoz'....but is that true? Sounds more like he walked away
Sepp Kuss!!!!!!
Glad to see Jonas head up again. 12 days without training must have a negative impact on his performance.
“Lease a bike” is a cursed surname for a team…. Jumbo” is good luck just like a jumbo shrimp
Hmmm? I wonder where this puts Matteo Jorgenson?
They can still 'pull out' olaav kooij from the giro after stage 13. Gives him at least a few(3/4) chances at a giro stage. Classic sprinter grandtour racing. Stage 14 is a ITT and up next are three hard mountain stages. Olav kooij is defnitely not the worst climbing sprinter.
