Glad you all appreciated this. It was edited down a little for the show and actually, I could have made a half hour programme with the material we had.
Brilliant. I used to travel across from Cov with a mate in my convertible Triumph Herald, hand painted black 🖤 Start off in town, The Parisienne? and the pub opposite. Loved those big barrels with the seating inside. Went to the Holy City Zoo a couple of times too but nothing has ever been a patch on the Rum Runner in my eyes.
My god, it's been a long long time since I saw that photo of me with Roger and Nick!! My hair changed a lot more colors since then, still pink now!! Those were such fun days. xxx
You are 60+ and still dye your hair pink? I wonder what kind of reactions you get from others. There's a time for everything, lady and you're stuck in the early 80's, that's 40 years ago 😦
My God was just sent this from an old friend in Brum, I appear twice and know almost everyone on the photos.....Barbarellas, Rumrunner, Zoo, Rebeccas, the Grosvenor, the wine bars all those memories just flooding back Fabulous video so glad you uploaded it from an ex punk new romantic who had a great time in those days
Get your facts right woman. Roger Taylor is the drummer not guitarist of Duran and coincidentally (did they not realise!) he's in fact captured in that picture at 1.48...gorgeous dark hair and matinee looks.
The Rum Runner has its beginnings a lot earlier than the eighties scene. I can remember having to queue up to get in, in the early 70's and if you turned up without a smart jacket and trousers and no tie the bouncers would not let you in. There was a cafe opposite called The Tow rope next to Bingley hall in Broad street where you could get a great breakfast for five bob at one in the morning when you came out. Also at the top of Broad St there was another cafe called the Saints and Sinners which was next door to the strip club. That was a 24 hour cafe with an illicit disco in the basement. In those days there were no kebab shops or MacDonalds so these cafes were packed out on Friday and Sat nights hence the aptly named Saints and Sinners.
Nice one for including Ronny's cover of "If you want me to stay", produced by Midge Ure and Rusty Egan by the way (3:45 and on). Overall a great bit of history, fascinating!
Rum runner night club in Broad street Birmingham open in the sixties in the eighties Duran Duran used to play there but it knocked down in 1987 to make way a huge Hyatt hotel on the left and Regency wharf on the old rum runner site
Used to go there back in the day on a Monday soul night. Small dance floor, American import music, cool atmosphere what's not like. The posers there to be seen and those into the music who just want to shut up and dance, such good memories. Met my wife there too. I miss those days...
My supervisor at a restaurant I worked at used to work at the rum runner. His name was John Poole or Poulton. He new the boys from Duran Duran. Another couple of clubs were Barbarella flamingos. John was a door man I'm trying to get my head around that.
Cheers Glen... Am now "friends" with John on Facebook and have also joined "The Rum Runner Club" FB page. I have added a few photos to the FB page including the poster that I made for "Gay John & The Dogettes" for their alternative cabaret show that was in November 1983!!... Timewarp doesn't even come close..
Hi Mister Rons, sorry dont have any memory of The Dog-ettes, I did work at The Rumrunner for a year, and I see you knew Polly who was one of my best friends with John, Black Beauty, so we must have crossed paths at some stage....take care
Roger Taylor is the drummer - John Taylor played lead guitar and then switched to bass guitar - Andy Taylor then came in with lead guitar. TAYLOR power!! Wooohoooo!!!!! :)
I used the club late 60s early 70s, took a nice girl their Jo Bird she was lovely.I also met my wife their Gill, it may have an old club but you could still have a good time
Wow! Thanks folks for sharing! It's absolutely brilliant video! I've always imagine how RumRunner would look like, however I have got a video ''Planet earth'' from this club( from 2011's reedition of ''Duran Duran''). I wish I had been there in 80's. It's one of my dream. I'm new romanticer and people don't want to understand it. I was growing up with new wave music in my heart. Now I've learn Rum Runner was a mother- club of almost all british new romantic, not only of Duran Duran! ;)
Would this day and age be able to get these times back must've been fantastic worth spending your hard earned money bring it back now I say we need a new song and it will be done let's see
Peter Mcbride There is actually a monthly club night in Birmingham called 'Only After Dark' which faithfully recreates these nights with the music of the time and people dressing appropriately.
Jon, sorry I thought that may have been "Gay John"!!.. (no offence intended). Lost track of him when I left Brun in 1985... Great times... I still have loads of things from the Runner, including one of the record decks from that era when Dick was the DJ there... Just can't seem to part with them!... All the very best.
Wow!... That's unbelievable... Next time you see John ask him about the night he played The Rum Runner with the Dog-ettes... I took a load of shit from Ray Berrow over booking John that night... But it was well worth it! Great to hear that he is still out & about shaking his stuff. I was known as Jaffa back then & I was the bar manager at the Runner, please do pass on my regards if you bump into him again. Many thanks.
Me imagino a John Taylor recibiendo a los clientes del club en la puerta... Con esa carita tan hermosa... Mmmcosssita más bella!!! Cómo deseo un video para verlo!!!

And I'm due to go in about 10 days time!... There might be 2 renunions this time if I'm lucky. Thanks Glen.
Oooh my aching head!... Yep, Gay John is/was my old friend from those far-off days. Is he the one you said was on Facebook or have I got it all arse-about-face?
@3:58 he had to hide his boots in his bag and wear them outside of the house because his mother thought they were "trouble shoes"! 😂😂😂 Different world, the problems nowadays are very different.

Dirty Marys on the Harley Road being the very very Last Drink Destination!
Can you remember flamingos?
That. Is amazing. You should write a book!! I know I’d read it!
Haha, did you live in Yardley?

Anyone remember that disgusting free Chili at the Rum runner?
Yes my mate dished it out on a Sun night ...What do you mean disgusting????? It was free , wet and warm 😅
DURAN DURAN!!!!!!!!!!!
My favorite part is 1:48!!! My favorite DRUMMER in the world! (Not guitartist!)

1:12 Dancer - Gino Soccio
you're really lucky guy, you know!
@Tonannee Roger Taylor?? Guitarist then bass??? You mean John. Roger is the drummer.
Marc Almond (Soft Cell), not Mark Harmon
