Thanks so much for this technique! Only question I have is when sealing the paper that had the original acrylic on it already dried, and then you pulled the oil stick print over top of it, what would you use to seal that paper once the oil was thoroughly dry?
I have a question - my wife paints with oil paints and we have lots of tubes filled with basic oil paint. Would your technique also work with just applying a few drops of oil paint squeezed from a tube (like we do with acrylics on the plate routinely)? Thank you for sharing this adaptation. Avram
avramrubin1 the question lies in how that Medium needs to be cleaned. If it requires more than simply wiping off with water, as with water soluble oils or using Walnut based oil or baby oil to wipe it off the plate. As in if it requires solvents or turpentine to clean it then I would not use it on the plate. This technique has only been tested with r&f pigment sticks
I have only had success with the oil pigment sticks from R&F Handmade Paints. Materials I expected to work, such as Akua Intaglio DID NOT work at all. As for oil paints, as long as they can be cleaned off the plate without harming it, you can try. But that is why I do it for you. I'm testing more every day. :)
What would you recommend for sealing a print made with the oil pigment sticks? If I understand correctly all embellishments over the print should be oil based products?
Nancy Gray all embellishments over the oil portion of the print would best be encaustic, or oil based products or solvent based products. You would need to refer to the individusl manufacturer's instructions on what they recommend for sealing.
Hi Miss Sally. Great technique I have to try. How long does the print take to dry since it’s oil paint. Are the Gelli prints you used as backgrounds printed with acrylic paint? Also can you you use acrylic paint on top of the oil paint prints? Tfs. Tere
The print is typically dry within a few minutes, as the application of oil paint is so very thinly applied. If you utilize Pebeo Art Markers, Sharpie oil-based or Ranger Archival Inks (also oil-based) to embellish, you have lots of oil-based choices. The prints that do not employ acrylic paint can be used with encaustics as well.
Gel Press Monoprinting Art Products Thanks for responding. I ordered a few of the oil sticks, both dark & light so I can also make your newsprint on the gel press too. Tfs. Tere
Agreed, Glenda. So you are seeing unedited pulls. I would do this on a FB Live - that is how reliable it is! Replicatable techniques are what I like to promote.
Discuss with your attorney for full clarification, but our understanding is that if used in original artwork process it's fine. but you cannot sell prints of the work. only the original artwork.
love the versatility, only..they are extremely expensive. Unfortunately not an option for many of us artists. I do enjoy watching ideas on image transfers, though. TFS.
Are you kidding??? R & F Pigment sticks are $22 for one! $155 for a small set on Amazon! Who do you think spends that kind of money??? I'll try my luck with the paint method!
We will run to our local book store and grab a 2019 issue to give it a try. Cannot speak for publication differences across the years - but at least we will know if current publications work or not. Will let you know!
Oh I want to try this. Thanks for sharing. So creative.

When using Vogue, does it make a difference if you use an editorial page or a page of advertising?
Hi! Would this technique work with, Marabu paintsticks?
Hi, its work with oil colors of the tube??, I don't have oil sticks. Thanks!

Nancy Gray rfpaints.com has great info!
Would this also work with pan pastels?
Does the print have to be sealed in some way?

Wow thanks! Other techniques only work for me 10% of the time.
Glenda Cox agreed. We tend to try and promote techniques that would work in a workshop, retreat setting.

Do you have to worry about copyrights?

RobynL R you just need one, favorite color. And they last a long time!
Sally would this process not work with a photocopy?
Marci JLo Vallun No, it does not. This is about absorption and resist...a specific property of these high end magazine papers and inks.
Gel Press Monoprinting Art Products , thank you Sally🌹
Love you hat
