I’ve completed 4 marathons and bonked each time because of a failed nutrition plan. I’m one of those people with a sensitive stomach unable to be trained to accept gels, Gummies, sports beans, etc. I experimented for years with different brands, mixes, amounts and each one made me sick. Tailwind has been the best thing yet. I’ve done numerous 100+ mile bike rides with Tailwind without bonking and zero stomach issues. You are spot on with the Tailwind followed by a water chaser😂. Now I’m ready to attempt marathon #5 and I hope that Tailwind will be the salvation of my nutrition plan.
I hope it's exactly what's been missing for you, Cedric! Fueling well definitely plays a big part in feeling strong that last 10k. I always make my super concentrated to get more carbs.
I have a video that's Nuun VS Liquid IV. This was well done Jane. Thumbs up
Hi Suzie - thanks! I think I may have tried Liquid IV once but have never used it in conjunction with running. I will check out your video!
Tailwind helped me finish my ultra. The race aid station just said "drink this!" I went from bonking to finishing 30th. It really helps
It provides a big boost of carbs when you can often stomach only so many gels. Great job on your strong ultra finish!
Excellent video, Jane! I have noticed as I have gotten older (I'll be 60 this fall), I really need to kick up the electrolytes on longer runs, especially when it is warm. I carry some 8 oz bottles in the pockets of my hydration vest (I use just water in the bladder) and have found that dissolving half a tablet of Nuun (I like Citrus fruit flavor) and then adding my Tailwind (number of scoops depends on the length of my run, I have used up to 3 scoops in an 8 oz bottle without any stomach issues) it has given me just the right amount of fuel and electrolytes to keep me from cramping, etc. I like the Green Tea Buzz Tailwind, the flavor seems to pretty tasty even after adding the Citrus fruit Nuun. Anyway, this is what has worked for me, it does make for a fairly concentrated "cocktail", but after I drink the Nuun/Tailwind mixture, I take a sip of water from my hydration pack and swish it around and I definitely don't have that after taste that gels used to give me. Thanks again for the great info and great video! Cheers from Canada, Scott
Hey Scott - your fueling sounds pretty similar to what I ended up doing in my last marathon - I talk about it here around the 15-minute mark: ruclips.net/video/kytXezl1KMw/видео.html Just like you I did 3.5 scoops of Tailwind with 8.5 of water...yes, very concentrated but it worked great! I also took 3 gels which included those electrolyte and caffeine components. And always lots of water, of course! I've never actually taken Nuun during a long run/race, but that strategy of yours makes great sense. Thanks for sharing how you use these two products together to avoid stomach issues (which is so common in distance running!)
Great video. Nuun also has an endurance product for long distance runs.
Yes, I do know that now...I think I didn't realize this when I made this video. Nuun Endurance seems to be a pretty common drink found on race courses, these days.
Thank you Jane. You are such a wealth of knowledge. I never realized i didn't need to be taking both gels and Tailwind during my runs. I still may end up taking gels during my marathon because I dont plannon wearing my hydration vest and my pockets in my shorts can only fit gels. Grandmas does have poweraid Ion4 at every aid station. It is usually mixed very weak though. I started taking Tailwind Recovery immediately at the end of every run over an hour and I really noticed my recovery time speed up.
Thanks so much for the kind words, Dan! I personally take both Tailwind and gels while racing and during long runs, but that's just personal preference. Just gels and taking the water/electrolyte drink on the course is what most people do. I will have to try the TW recovery...have never tried it!
woow. thanks for this video. so clear. I just move to a tropical country and the sweat here is just craaaazy. bought tailwind. gonna try tomorrow on my long run. thaaaaanks❤❤❤❤❤
What did you think of the Tailwind? I had an athlete in Indonesia and I know it was such a struggle for him with the heat and the humidity!!
i don’t drink enough water but the nuun tablets have helped me so much
I agree that it helps! Just a little taste refresher!
This was super interesting! Thanks for your expert breakdown. I always just assumed those powders contained a ton of sugar to make the product palatable lol
Yeah, you literally need the sugar/carbs to keep fueled for endurance. However, I'll have to look into what plant-based runners tend to lean towards! I've cut up dates before and those are great fuel, but I'm wondering how to mimic that 2:1 ratio of glucose:fructose. I'll have to look into it...though maybe you already know the answer!
Love Nuun. I have it after my run. I sweat a lot apparently (didn’t know this until I started running), so electrolytes are a must. I live in The Bahamas so it’s humid and hot. I’ll try Tailwind. Thanks for the video!
Oh man, I would definitely not be acclimated to that type of climate...good for you!! Nuun is awesome!
Irony is , that its during longer events with mandatory kit lists or the absolute logistical need for a running vest / pack ,that I really start to sweat from it being on my back . I often wonder if the supplementary fluids I can carry in the vest are actually negated by the amount of sweat lost in carrying them ?
Wherever possible I prefer to use a waist band stuffed with gels and a drink or even hand held bottle .
As for Tailwimd it works for me without any negative adverse effects I haven’t yet tried Nuun but will give it a try .
Great video .
Hi there - I definitely see what you are saying. I would say part of that depends on the temperature that day as well as if someone is a heavy and/or salty sweater. I personally don't like anything around my waist, but know that works great for some people! Thanks for watching and I think you'll find Nuun or similar is a nice addition to your hydration strategy.
Nice side by side comparison. I'm from the Northwest and I'm visiting some family in Texas for a month right now and am getting slapped around by the heat on my runs. I'm hoping implementing some nuun can help me get my hydration squared back around.
Hey Seth - thanks for watching! I would struggle to acclimate as well! I love Nuun and hopefully it will encourage you to stay hydrated. I also have this running in the heat video in case you would find that helpful at all: ruclips.net/video/58OwwV9QH04/видео.html
Very helpful thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Tailwind endurance during the long-distance events and LMNT for electrolytes (no sugar) to hydrate afterwards.
Love LMNT, too!! I've tried the sample pack and just ordered more, so trying to figure out what will be the right balance to have during this marathon training cycle.
I love the idea of Tailwind - the ease and simplicity of it. BUT, I can never figure out how to know I'm getting the right amount during a run and also how to add it during a run or a race (I'm currently a 4:50 or longer marathoner so I think I'd need to take additional TW with me but unless I am mixing with the right amount of water I just get completely lost on the logistics of using this. Makes sense to mix it up prior on a long run but then I'd need to make sure I'm consuming at the right 'cadence' to get enough fuel at the right time? I'm probably overthinking but I just can't figure TW out. I know people mix it up and then just 'sip along the way' but what if I don't take in enough to hit the calorie goal per hour?
Hi Jennifer - I'm going to be doing a fueling video next week that covers how to tackle nutrition based on number of carbs in a certain amount of time so that people can use whatever nutrition they want. 50g carbs per hour is about the minimum you want to have in a 2+ hour run. Nutritionists will recommend up to 80 or more depending on the person. So for TW, that's 2 scoops per hour. However you end up mixing it, just make sure you're getting in at least all 2 scoops (or more) within each hour. If you put 4 scoops in one bottle, just make sure half that bottle is gone in an hour. Hope that helps!
My favorite flavors are Nuun in Tri-Berry and Lemon-Lime: amzn.to/3cTyd0n and Tailwind in Mandarin Orange: amzn.to/3gIlzCL . I also mentioned Sword (very similar to Tailwind) which I also love in Orange: amzn.to/3zC3Mpc
hI jANE .. iM 67 AND I AM ON DIUERETICs AND I HAVE BEEN DEHYDRATING A WHOLE LOT DAILY . i JUST GOT THE NUUN ,,SPORT ENERGY . i HAVE CONTROLLED BP IS THIS OK TO USE . tHANK YOU SO MUCH .. bE SAFE bOB.
Hi there, Bob! I can't imagine that it would be something you couldn't have, but I definitely don't feel qualified to answer that question for you and would instead recommend you ask your doctor. Thanks for watching!
@@runningwithjane there really is not much caffeine as I look closer. Ty for responding. Stay safe n be happy !! Bob
So does tailwinds have all the needed electrolytes for longruns done by us heavy sweaters?
Hey there - thanks for your question! So, according to their website, Tailwind offers all the electrolytes you need, but as we all know, everyone is different. On a hot day for a long run or marathon, I would personally take at least one specialized gel such as Huma+ gel with double electrolytes to supplement and have salt tablets with me just in case I started to cramp up.
Can you look into Vitargo VS2 by Genr8?
I don't know at all about these products. Perhaps someday I will have the opportunity to check them out.
I have stomach issues as well and need a product that doesnt make my LES worse lol . Its tough trying to get a run in when your stomach is already acting up
Hey there! Sorry to hear you're going through this - unfortunately it's pretty common early on. It's important to train your stomach, no matter what you choose. Start with very small amounts. And before you run, make sure you are eating very easy to digest carbs. Drinkable carbs, like Tailwind, are a great starting point.
@@runningwithjane ivactually just purchased Tailwind , i suffer from GERD, i eat healthy and am not even a bit fat . So when i started feeling symptoms was when i started running more than 4 miles a day. Some studies show those kind of workouts can relax the LES and cause burping ,you can just imagine how frustrating that can be. I run 13 miles 3 times a week so i do in fact need something easily digestable
I hope the Tailwind works for you - let me know how it goes!
@@runningwithjane boy oh howdy!!! Goodness gracious!!! This stuff felt good in my tummy! Haha ,usually with gels i burp when i first take one then i continue burping a bit throughout my 13 mile run. With tailwind i didnt even get that nasty feeling and my recovery isnt bad . Thanks for recommending tailwind ,stay awesome!!!!🖤🖤
@@bikerdude6119 this makes me SO happy to hear! This is exactly the reason I do what I do. Glad the information on the channel could help you have more comfortable and enjoyable runs while also staying well fueled.
