Erin Moriarty traveled to Stockholm, Sweeden to tell the story of author and journalist Steig Larsson - the man behind "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo."
The books are fantastic. I hated to finish the third one because it meant saying goodbye to Lisbeth Salander. I hope there are two more books. What a sad situation between his girlfriend and his family.
Stieg Larsson didn't die without a will. His will was contested by his father and brother (with whom he reportedly had little contact) who seized control of his property in defiance of Larsson's wishes.
Stieg Larsson, a master of the thriller who thrilled the world with his Millennium Trilogy. His complex characters and gripping stories captivate readers until the end. Lisbeth Salander, his iconic heroine, is a symbol of strength and determination. She fights against injustice and abuse and inspires us to stand up for a better world. Stieg Larsson, your legacy lives on in your stories and in the hearts of your readers. *LOVE FROM INDIA*
WATERSIDE5555. I agree with you 100%: the US version of the movie was not true to the book and overplayed the violence and sex scenes. That's Hollywood for you. :/ The Swedish films were perfection.
Yes, prefer the originals. Gritty and using the true language. I've just listened to the audiobooks, and the Swedish movies are so accurate! The Hollywood version was too slick, and I don't think they did 2 or 3, did they? Craig was a good choice, but the original cast were so realistic.
I feel like his father and brother is covering up the truth on what he was working on. And Eva doesn't want to work with them because she wants to get that truth out. That man knew a lot, and now it's all buried with him.
There are certain neurotoxins, dipped on the end of a acupuncture needle, which could induce a 'heart attack' that no coroner could trace back to foul play... very suspicious
I LOVE the books and films and I'm wary of what hollywood will do but still a bit excited. I'm doing a report for a class on the first book because of Stieg's wonderful work. (6,666 views; sweet.)
The Swedish versions were NEVER in theaters. They were presented as a television series. A Ms. Rapace pronounces her name as an American would Ra-pace--pace as in a step. CBS sent out the junior varsity on this story.
Because it's a more complete cinematic experience packaged and told in a way that is well worth the price of admission. from the amazing original score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (Academy Award winners, btw) to the cinematography that breathtakingly captures the jaw-dropping Swedish land- and city-scapes. The original was just a mediocre made-for-TV movie. However, the Swedish "Let The Right One In" is a haunting dark fairy tale, and the American remake is garbage by comparison.
I know Lisbeth isn’t diagnosed as autistic in-universe and even the other characters don’t know what to conclude on that question, but as an autistic person who also happens to be fascinated by all things Swedish, she makes me feel proud and strong.
@arivas713 Don't expect it to be good as the first three--I believe only his wife can continue writing more books for the millenium series as she knows the backstory of both Lisbeth and Mikeal and knows the precise material that Stieg introduced...His father and brother can't, they didn't have good relationships.
@AL13NM I haven't heard anything about the ending though I could see an improvement in pacing. The ending of the book is slow and all your attention was focused on the climax that just concluded rather than the falling action of loose ends being tied up. The change to Watchmen worked because it raised the stakes and made it seem more like Doctor Manhattan's fault than the graphic novel
I have genuinely never been more pissed at somebody for kicking the bucket than this guy. Had 10 books planned, I would defintely have read another 7 books like the first three.
The American production company that made the film did not steal anything. They paid the Larsson family a considerable amount of money for the rights. We're talking high millions.
@AlbinoOctopus . I'm waiting for the movies. Yes, I was able to acquire the 1st & 3rd book and couldn't put them down. The 2nd book isn't yet available to me. At 1st many people may be put off with the strange names but will get used to them I think, I did.
@AL13NM Yeah I found out about Craig, Fincher, Rezner, and everyone else attached to the project soon after that comment those months ago and now I'm going to lose my mind waiting for it to come out. It looks like it will be even more faithful than the Swedish films
All three books were adapted for a movie series for Swedish television. They aren't perfect adaptations (some liberties were taken) but they're better than the American adaptations of the first and fourth books. The fourth book was dreadful.
I was speaking about the movie. The book I'm jpckecking out right now, but I gotta say, I'm not a fun of the original three. I think Larssen was an inferior, amateur writer; the books are really bad. The movies were OK though.
@@bramblebop1904. I haven't read the originals since I don't understand Swedish. However, the first three book as translated by Reg Keeland were brilliant. Maybe Reg made the books better in English than they were in the original Swedish - I get the sense that he was allowed some latitude in the translations. Maybe the the new translator, George Goulding, did more of a literal translation. But the English translations of first three books were infinitely superior to the fourth. I couldn't even bear to read the fifth.
rumor is that there are 2 nearly completed manuscripts that Eva may attemptto complete but the sad thing is that Stieg hadplans for a total of ten books...I guess some things are better left unfinished and unknown.
drroach912 it doesn't count. I mean it's "canon" but still not made by Larrson, therefore not apart of the actual series. Not saying a series can't continue after an author's passing, but it can't even compare to how Larsson knew and portrayed the characters, cuz he MADE them. So no, I highly highly doubt they will make one
@Dank951 yeah, hopefully they will fix this legal quandary of theirs and his family will get the hell outta the way and let her finish the series. I think maybe it wont be quite the same as if she had his impute but i think this is the closest to what could have been. To think that some tall stairs have robbed us of a literary masterpiece.
I am not sure anyone thinks that. It seems every person I come across that has seen both works thinks the Swedish version is better. A lot of people in the States are superficial and self-hating and think almost everything about their country's pop culture is inferior to the rest of the world. You saying "style over substance" is not really saying anything at all. Americans seem to comprise of Larsson's biggest fan base.
I don't know why he smoked and ate unhealthy foods. His grandfather also died from a heart attack at age 50, and his mother died at a young age from breast cancer and an aneurism. So he already had a bad family history of poor health. So why then add to that with chain smoking and junk food?
I finally got around to reading Stieg Larsson's Millennium books (well, two of the three in their english translations) and I of course sympathize with his crusade against unjustified hatred against women and ethnic minorities (or majorities). His crusade against hatred was limited to right-wing factions. I will remind people that left-wing factions also are dangerous. Left-wing governments like that of Soviet Russia, Red China or North Korea, you see hatred and murder very much used by them.
I understand this woman dated and is a practical widow to him but she should come to terms and says whatever her trauma is. It's not like she has the right to step over the family. Someone has to tell her "sorry but Swenden's legal system gives you no shit if you didn't marry the guy, get over it bitch"
If you want to find out more read these two books. ‘The Tattooed girl....by Dan Burstein and ‘There are things I want you to know about Stieg and me’ by Eva Gabrielsson
I hate the fact that american people thibk its ok to steal an idea for movies from other countries like the spanish movie "rec" or the russian movie "let the right one in" and now I just found out that they're copying the girl with the dragon tattoo? What pisses me off evan more is that americans think that the american version is going to be good...sorry for my annoying rant. I just had to get it out of my system.
You can be sure they paid a trainload of money for the rights, so no one stole anything. I can understand if you dont like american versions though, though The Girl wasn't bad.
IMO, Larsson was writing about his own family in Dragon Tattoo. The part where the rich matriarch is discussing his family of liars, cheats, etc. might be a summery of his own family particularly when it comes to extreme right wing Nazis. From the NY Times, "we have the balls Eva doesn't"

2019, I'm reading once again the girl with the dragon tattoo. Amazing book.
Thanks Mr. Larson
Just got them on audiobooks!
Re-reading this extra ordinary book for the 2nd time. What a superb writer. RIP , sir
So sad!
Oh wow!
Technically he did since the will wasn't witnessed. There is no way to prove he wrote it or that his girlfriend did.
@Anon54387 , they will was clearly written by Larsson. But his estranged father and brother wanted all the money.
It was just a Hollywood version of a Swedish film. I think people don't give the Swedish version enough credit.
Anyone ever wonder what would Steig have written if he where still alive? He's such a great writer.
Stieg Larsson, a master of the thriller who thrilled the world with his Millennium Trilogy. His complex characters and gripping stories captivate readers until the end.

I'm starting it to read it again.

I wonder how the other 7 books would have been about. These books were fantastic!

He never even got to see the success of his stories and how the world became so fascinated with Lisbeth Salander.
My fav book, thank you
I'm really proud to say that I'm Swedish. We have some amazing, creative, people!
Yes, true, humble and individual, idealistic, high vibration.
The Swedish version of was by far the best!
RIP Stieg Larsson you did so much good in your life such a shame that it ended

It's very sinister, sad and mocking that Stieg died just after publishing of Millennium Trilogy.
i think stieg larsson was someone else in the history of writing
I know! His books are so amazing!
i cant believe that a human being wrote those books. i love u stieg larsson, rest in peace :D
I got chills in spine 🥺
RIP as they all say -you left us far too soon
I'm on the second book. Love 'em.
I had a GF who met a Swedish Journo in a European airport. He was fascinated with her Dragon tattoo on her rear midriff
You are so right. I love the Swedish movie more.

They were in theaters here in the U.S.
They were in theathers
So sad. He would've been super rich. Rich beyond belief.
Okay, I have a question. The dutch title of the book makes me think it's a book for women, is that the the case?
I read the girl with the dragon tattoo, it was great book although I started ask a question: is this considered to be a Left Wing novel?
Because it's a more complete cinematic experience packaged and told in a way that is well worth the price of admission. from the amazing original score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (Academy Award winners, btw) to the cinematography that breathtakingly captures the jaw-dropping Swedish land- and city-scapes. how can American news agencies, make everything sound like an ad on TV..
It's tragic!!!
The Swedish film's and the book's are much better in Swedish! :P Love my country! Love to Steig Larsson! :D
Well, yeah, unfortunately we dont speak Swedish.
I have genuinely never been more pissed at somebody for kicking the bucket than this guy. Had 10 books planned, I would defintely have read another 7 books like the first three.
I love the books and comic books and the movies.
hey guys apparently there is a another book in the works. hopefully it will get published.
@AlbinoOctopus .
I envy you just a little. I'm going to try to order the movies since if you have them, then they must be out on DVDs?
The American production company that made the film did not steal anything. They paid the Larsson family a considerable amount of money for the rights. We're talking high millions.
This is absolutly a phenomena...........

it's 2017 and I'm waiting for the other 2

we need to take care of out health for the most. Always!
Why does everyone think the American film version was the best?
Swedish version any day of the week
I don't see any evidence of that...
Will the 4th book be made into a Swedish film???

Nicholas Ward I know this is old but yes they have made a movie. It will be released 2018
Damn Stieg Larson dies but Stephenie Meyer lives.
i hope his larsson's girlfriend isn't bitter about the situation and maybe would release the 4/5th book for the fans.

I agree. I just think the American version was more style over substance. And some people can tell the difference between style and substance.
@Searching4Truth1 THe second book is very slow moving until 400 pages into it !
@AL13NM
Very much agreed
why does hollywood make a bad coppy of a fantastic movie?
Phenomenon I mean
why the fifth one? if theres only 3 and allegedly a fourth one
There's the fifth one, by the same author.
Wow, such an unfortunated story.
"Rapace" is pronouced "Rapas" not "Rapachi"
