Me too! I owned a black 96 model in Australia. Whooped supersport 600’s and even 1000’s on the tighter tracks. Winton & Broadford circuits in Victoria. Best sounding road bike ever made, in my opinion. Especially with Aussie made Staintunes.
I remember seeing a picture of the JDM version with white frame, red full bodywork & Brembo brakes (& JDM race pipes) it beat 900SS in tests. I really wanted one but had no money. The fact that Neevsey didn't know much about it made me feel really old (cos I am) Always a fan of 'real world' bikes that I guess has evolved into adventure bikes. Bring back the FJ1200 simple & fast. BOOM

I still have a black 1999 TRX, but it hasn't run in years so I'll need to get it looked over by a workshop before I'd ride it again (replace all rubber hoses, head and swingarm bearings, fork rebuild). My TRX is the only bike I've ever held onto after I bought a replacement (2012 FZ1). I bought the TRX new in 1999 and rode it so much I rolled the (metric) odometer over. Mine is almost stock, except I had the standard factory camshafts replaced once the warranty had expired and swapped the front brake calipers for a set of blue-spots. Mine still has the original exhaust cans on it. Where I am (Australia) my TRX has qualified for a type of "classic vehicle" registration this year. The "classic" registration fees are much cheaper than normal, but there are restrictions such as limiting how many days per year I could ride it on public roads. One detail I'd point out to anyone who wants to get a TRX, watch the part of this vid where they start and rev the engine. You'll notice a bit of smoke in the exhaust. TRX's are known to burn off some of the engine oil while they run, so regular checking and topping up the oil is A MUST.
My dad had a TRX and I loved it to bits. Surprisingly comfortable and torque for days. The suspension could really do with an upgrade but other then that an utterly brilliant bike in my book.
Did fork springs and emulators on mine and it transformed it. Forks went from soggy bottom boys to compliant while sharpening up turn in and letting you trail brake.
When i was 7, my Dad got one of these brand new. It had twin racing macron exhausts on it and was the loudest thing i had ever heard as a kid. Still more desirable than the modern twins
I also went immediately stocked when i first saw it on a magazine. I was 19. Got a blue one 2 years later. Had great fun and later donated it to a friend. We are in the progress of rebuilding with TDM900 internals, keeping the 5 speeds.
Great vid. I've always liked the TRX850. So underrated & misunderstood. Also way ahead of it's time as the market's now flooded with larger 270° parallel twins 25 years later. Yamaha could easily bring it back after a moderate refresh & I'd definitely be interested.
I remember when they came out new. They were a showcase for new innovations. 270 degree crank, 5v genesis heads, composite steel tube frame with an aluminium for the swingarm pivot, and the first bike to have the stacked gearbox with the clutch up high.
My stock blue TRX was just months old, when a guy asked me while on a traffic light: "This bike looks great! What motor does it run? Did you build it yourself??" The last describes in one line the splendid DIY racer aesthetics of this bike. Still can't take my eyes of it even when 26 years have passed. It is still a head turner and many people will ask about it.
I remember attending the Yamaha Race School at Cadwell Park with my brother back in the day, and they had these TRX850’s for us to use. We thought they were going to be quite dull compared to our ZXR750’s that we rode up on. They turned out to be brilliant! So light, torquey and nimble and we had an absolute ball! Really underestimated bikes.
Had mine for about 8 years. Although I've seen one or two on the road in that time I've never seen another when parked up. Gets plenty of attention - love it.
My dream bike when they were released in Australia and still my dream bike now. I have a 2002 TDM900 which has an engine derived from the TRX and it sounds glorious and is a brilliant engine. This one is my favourite colour scheme too. I’m in love 😍
That is beautiful. I had a Ducati back when these came out in Japan and remember not liking the idea of them at that time but now I think I prefer this to any Ducati. Congrats on getting this beaut.
Owned mine just over 10 years now, started looking for one when I was 22 after 3 years managed to find red and black one like in this video. (We all know red & black ones are the fastest 😉). I must of owned around 15 bikes in between (sports bikes, gsxr1000’s, zxr’s, etc..) but can’t seem to let go of this one. Think it’s the styling that does it for me, I love how rare the bike is. It’s a good all arounder, I’ve done some big daily miles on it, track days it’s good in the rain. You can even leave it in your garage for a year and it will fire straight back up, nice and forgiving if you haven’t rode for a bit. The TRX is ultra reliable and plenty of parts available if you was to have an off. Mirrors are shocking tho 😂 gsxr mirrors do a better job 😊 not too hard to convert. It’s well worth having one of these as part of your collection, it owes me northing and will only give me my money back if I was to let go. I own 1996 Trx and had for it 2 yrs now , and that brings a smile to my face when I go out. I’ve done the same changed front brakes and brake hoses, also change coolant hoses for black silicone ones. Always have liked them.
I had a 1996 TRX850 that I owned for about 8 years and it was great fun. Put some R1 brakes on it with braided lines, new rear shock, progressive springs in the forks and race cans and it is a hoot!
I had 3 of them simultaneously, 2 running, and 1 in bits. Absolutely loved this bike😁 Going so hard into a corner with the back end wigging under brakes and gas her up just before apex and slide the thing all the way out😂 The most fun bike ive ever owned... A classic in my mind
my first big bike....as a motocrosser doing a 3 day bike rental bike test....then bought one of these....great bike...wobbled about when you pushed it but terrific to learn higher speed fun...
One of the roofing crew turned up to my building site a few years back on a "cafe racer" modified TRX850 and it was the first time I'd ever seen or heard one. Absolutely loved it, and now that I think about it, it probably influenced me to buy my yellow 60th anniversary edition XSR900. Seriously cool understated piece of kit!
I'm in the United States and remember fondly reading stories about that bike. If Yamaha had sent it here I would have likely had one. Still a sexy bike.
I love mine, still have it and ended up buying 2 Ducati's as a result of owning this 'copy' - 95 Monster 900 and 2000 900 Super sport. Also, has 5 valves per cylinder - technology Yamaha sold on to VW/Audi.

Fantastic! I always admired the TDM850, for its looks at least. This was a little bit different with more race-inspired looks. Great-looking engines and no fancy electric bits.
I just got one as my second bike… picked it up today and drove it home across country.. never ridden a twin only racey in-line 4s. Definitely needs a tune and a fiddle but can see potential. Not sure what I want to do with it yet… 25,000 miles all the history. Interesting bike

They were a somewhat cult bike here in Australia. You wouldn't have met a more dedicated bunch of owners. The sound with Staintune pipes was really something to behold. I reluctantly sold mine way back when, and wish I still had it till this day.
Great review. Lovely bike - I had the same colour scheme. One elephant in the room - oil consumption. They are either fine or drink like a fish. Mine was the latter. To the extent that if you were to tour on it, you'd need to take X litres of top up with you - seriously.
I just want to say, you guys are gonna be the reason I buy my first bike. I´m still travelling the world atm but when I settle down and get a house I´m throwing a bike or two in the garage for sure 🤣
Had one on that days. My every day bike. 60 Kilometers each day there and back for work. The whole years. Once in wunter stuck on the highway on icy road. Sold it for a Kawasaki KLR 650. That one saved me on icy roads :-). But never forget the races among friends through the woods of south Germany. Black Forest Rocketeer :D. By the way, best experience on Pirelli Phantom these days.
This was a much better proposition than the TDM. I remember this bike being very niche at the time and not many being seen on UK roads at least. I did look at one of these at a shop, but ended up with a VFR 750.
Good to see you and the TRX on video Justin. With the success of the new XSR900 I think Yamaha should think about a TRX700 and bring back the trellis frame.
Fortnine is great but sometimes the research is somewhat non-stringent. Doesn’t matter much in the grand scheme of things but it is a bit disappointing.
There were aftermarket kits for British twins long before the TRX was thought of. They were possibly the catalyst. But the first production 270* twin. I loved mine, regretted selling it.
The best Ducati ever made! I bought mine 1998 and sold it 2002. Bought it back in 2020 - now it is a keeper. Öhlins shock, Modified stock fork with a custom BMW1000RR cartridge and ISR brakes 320 discs, six piston calipers and radial pump. Runs like a dream and it keep up with much more powerful and modern bikes on track. But effort a bit of manpower. Love it!

A mate had one and run up a heap of miles on it. His then bought a second one ,(swapped the red plastics across and rode that from then on. It was his favorite bike and he had ridden all sorts. Z1300. H2 triple , FZ 750 to name a few. And he was quick on it even at 70.
I had a 98 all red trx850 for a few years, it was my first "proper" bike after my 250cc learner bike. It was a great machine, bog standard apart from the blue spot caliper upgrade and stainless steel Staintune slip ons. Sounded huge. Would set off car alarms at idle. It was comfy and actually handled really well. My main issue was that it really needed a few more hp. I'm a big, heavy guy and the 80 or so hp just really wasn't enough for me. It it had around the 100-110hp mark I likely would have kept it forever.
I had one of these a -96 solid red with silver frame, really liked it although it has cheapish parts. Put Bos slipons and a Dynojet kit on it made 80 hp on the wheel, put the "blue dot" calipers on. Best mod was a cartridge kit in the forks. Had it for 3 years and then got a Ducati 900SSie.
Great bikes! I had one for years that started blue, then lost the fairing for a single round headlight and was, for a time sprayed in blackboard paint and drawn/written on with chalk!
I'm interested in getting one of these! First real motorcycle I rode was a friend's TDM 850 a few years ago, and the engine is indeed special! I reckon the TRX might also be one of the only bikes in this genre with higher Nm than hp 😄
I absolutely loved mine. Not that fast but characterful and so usable. The only down side was the quick wear carbs which then led to quick bore / ring wear. All sorted on the 900 motor but sadly we never saw a TRX900 :(
The TRX850 is one of my favourite bikes that I have never ridden; I wish Yamaha would bring it back with rhe CP2 engine from the MT-07 (perhaps with capacity increased to 750cc), and ABS of course.
@@chrishart8548 850cc would be nice, but I would not buy larger than a 750cc to avoid being pushed into the next insurance band. Where I, live one crown corporation (ICBC) has a monopoly on motor insurance, their insurance rates are linked to engine capacity (E.g., 50cc-110cc, 111cc-400cc, 451cc-750cc, 750cc-1,200cc, 1201cc+).
I worked at a yamaha dealership when this bike came out. It was dreadful. You've done a great job of talking it up. I rode one last year, and it was even worse than the first time I rode one. As for the channel.... Fantastic, keep them coming.

I had a session at Cadwell Park when they were part of the race school. So yes it was a track bike. I loved it, so easy to handle. I test rode one when I got home from a local dealer. Unfortunately it made my back ache. I was very sorry but it was just the wrong shape for me.
Always loved this model, cool style and very under rated. So mad it never came to Canada. 1 day I will import one. I would have searched for the Japan Brembo brakes as an upgrade, but I understand that the R1 brakes were probably cheaper and easier to find. Great video, but I would have liked to see it run with some footage.

I learned to get knee down on one of these. Loved it black with silver frame. Sold it for a TL1000s. Golden years of motorcycling for me.

The blue does look nice on them they also had the option of a nice shade of dark green that I also liked.

In America we got the TDM 850. I knew someone who back in the day yanked the motor and put it in an R7 chassis. It was a very cool club racer.

The tdm850 engine was just a bored out XTZ750 engine so all pre dates the TRX. And the first ones didn't even have the 270° crank

It actually only wobbles when driven slowly..otherwise something is wrong with your suspension!

I had two, both R plates, loved them. One of my was in Practical Sportsbikes, I had it looking sweet and wish I still had it.

Great review. Lovely bike - I had the same colour scheme. One elephant in the room - oil consumption. They are either fine or drink like a fish. Mine was the latter. To the extent that if you were to tour on it, you'd need to take X litres of top up with you - seriously.
I just want to say, you guys are gonna be the reason I buy my first bike. I´m still travelling the world atm but when I settle down and get a house I´m throwing a bike or two in the garage for sure 🤣
Just sold my trixie after 20 years of owning… fantastic bike and I loved it. Just getting too long in the tooth for it nowadays 😢

Had one on that days. My every day bike. 60 Kilometers each day there and back for work. The whole years. Once in wunter stuck on the highway on icy road. Sold it for a Kawasaki KLR 650. That one saved me on icy roads :-). But never forget the races among friends through the woods of south Germany. Black Forest Rocketeer :D. By the way, best experience on Pirelli Phantom these days.
This was a much better proposition than the TDM. I remember this bike being very niche at the time and not many being seen on UK roads at least. I did look at one of these at a shop, but ended up with a VFR 750.
Good to see you and the TRX on video Justin. With the success of the new XSR900 I think Yamaha should think about a TRX700 and bring back the trellis frame.

Fortnine is great but sometimes the research is somewhat non-stringent. Doesn’t matter much in the grand scheme of things but it is a bit disappointing.
Beautiful with all the right ingredients. They can build it again with just modern electronics and emissions, sell by tons.😊

There were aftermarket kits for British twins long before the TRX was thought of. They were possibly the catalyst. But the first production 270* twin. I loved mine, regretted selling it.
The best Ducati ever made! I bought mine 1998 and sold it 2002. Bought it back in 2020 - now it is a keeper. Öhlins shock, Modified stock fork with a custom BMW1000RR cartridge and ISR brakes 320 discs, six piston calipers and radial pump. Runs like a dream and it keep up with much more powerful and modern bikes on track. But effort a bit of manpower. Love it!

A mate had one and run up a heap of miles on it. His then bought a second one ,(swapped the red plastics across and rode that from then on. It was his favorite bike and he had ridden all sorts. Z1300. H2 triple , FZ 750 to name a few. And he was quick on it even at 70.

I had a 98 all red trx850 for a few years, it was my first "proper" bike after my 250cc learner bike. It was a great machine, bog standard apart from the blue spot caliper upgrade and stainless steel Staintune slip ons. Sounded huge. Would set off car alarms at idle. It was comfy and actually handled really well.
My main issue was that it really needed a few more hp. I'm a big, heavy guy and the 80 or so hp just really wasn't enough for me. It it had around the 100-110hp mark I likely would have kept it forever.
back in the day I was on the TRX forum and there was a bit of chat about the emulsion tubes in the carbs

I think the TRX was and is a very underrated bike. Great looks and simple mechanics, in blue with twin blueflame cans yes please.
That thing is absolutely lovely!...soooooo cool! Id daily it LOL, wish we had them in the US.
I had one of these a -96 solid red with silver frame, really liked it although it has cheapish parts. Put Bos slipons and a Dynojet kit on it made 80 hp on the wheel, put the "blue dot" calipers on. Best mod was a cartridge kit in the forks. Had it for 3 years and then got a Ducati 900SSie.
Great bikes! I had one for years that started blue, then lost the fairing for a single round headlight and was, for a time sprayed in blackboard paint and drawn/written on with chalk!
I knew someone that had a matt painted tdm 850 all the fairing was missing and it had a street fighter twin headlights from m&p parts catalogue.
Oh man this has been on my 'must have'-list for ages. Still looking...
And this is the perfect color as well. Oh man, getting the fever again. Really hard to find one... and even harder to find a good one.

First real motorcycle I rode was a friend's TDM 850 a few years ago, and the engine is indeed special!
I reckon the TRX might also be one of the only bikes in this genre with higher Nm than hp 😄
I absolutely loved mine. Not that fast but characterful and so usable. The only down side was the quick wear carbs which then led to quick bore / ring wear. All sorted on the 900 motor but sadly we never saw a TRX900 :(

The TRX850 is one of my favourite bikes that I have never ridden; I wish Yamaha would bring it back with rhe CP2 engine from the MT-07 (perhaps with capacity increased to 750cc), and ABS of course.
Or even increase the capacity to 850
@@chrishart8548 850cc would be nice, but I would not buy larger than a 750cc to avoid being pushed into the next insurance band. Where I, live one crown corporation (ICBC) has a monopoly on motor insurance, their insurance rates are linked to engine capacity (E.g., 50cc-110cc, 111cc-400cc, 451cc-750cc, 750cc-1,200cc, 1201cc+).
I worked at a yamaha dealership when this bike came out. It was dreadful. You've done a great job of talking it up. I rode one last year, and it was even worse than the first time I rode one.
As for the channel.... Fantastic, keep them coming.
The forum is full of people struggling to get them to run properly, me included.

Used to have one back in the day, great bike, recall it being very sensitive to tyres.

I had a session at Cadwell Park when they were part of the race school. So yes it was a track bike. I loved it, so easy to handle. I test rode one when I got home from a local dealer. Unfortunately it made my back ache. I was very sorry but it was just the wrong shape for me.
Always loved this model, cool style and very under rated. So mad it never came to Canada. 1 day I will import one. I would have searched for the Japan Brembo brakes as an upgrade, but I understand that the R1 brakes were probably cheaper and easier to find. Great video, but I would have liked to see it run with some footage.
I was one of those blokes that pointed at your bike at Buckenham and said wow a T rex dont see many of them 👍i was offered a brand new green one for £3999 back in the day why didn't i buy it🤦♂️we do get some rare stuff down Buckenham on a nice sunny Tuesday night i saw a szr660 the other week😃
