so true, its like if... everyone and their mothers want to be a ninja, the closest thing we have today are spies... and the easiest way to be a spy today is usually in an office of a company getting info for the rival company... so much action, you wont have enough shurikens for every one. i actually did some spy work a while back, and it was mostly sitting in the same place for days at the same time to overhear the conversation of a guy that i had to spy... i literally spent more time listening him saying things that doesnt matter than anything really exciting... now im a gardener and ive got more dangerous missions mowing the grass than spying that guy xD

well, it depends what kind of spywork you did... i wasnt an oficial spy... i was what you could call an informant... but its after all a type of spy that doesnt need much training or study... and not everything in the world of spies is completly secret... for example in argentina theres a famous guy called "the spy" because he used to work as a spy for the government... now that he is not a spy anymore he can say he was a spy without any risk probably because he didnt have to spy on people that would do anything now that they know... when i did my "spy" work... i literally had to spy a nazi old guy that im almost sure is dead now... he was a pilot in ww2... if he is still alive he must be old enough to not know how to find me on the internet... and the only thing i had to do with him was to confirm if he was the nazi pilot someone else was looking for... i did few other jobs but mostly it was getting hired in a company to find files there that i could sell to other companies or small things like that... and since it was in small companies there wasnt even much security... we even shared computers because there were sometimes more people than computers... and other small things like that... now... if i was a cia agent or something like that i would probably say nothing

People will avert their eyes because they want to pay attention to the play. Their brain will blur their figures out, that makes them as close as hiding in plain sight as it gets. Then, in a moment of a lot of action in the play, a ninja could strike, walk away, and already be on his way by the time people actually realize what's going on.

makes sense if it's for some kind of fancy masquerade ball. Lots of important people in elaborate costumes, mingling in a large crowd, sharing the latest gossip. It's would be spy's wet dream. Of course I'd probably go as one of the serving staff instead of an attendee. Rich people never notice the help, especially in a rigid class based society like feudal japan.

Not necessarily fourth wall. Rather a special effect. Comparable to CGI and editing in modern movies.

The kabuki ninja part was so interesting! What a cool concept - get the audience used to something being apart from the show, then when they least suspect it, one the 'props' jumps up and attacks. It's a cool fake out and a fourth wall sort of event, too.

It came from theatre stage hands who dressed in very dark outfits so they could move or animate props and fix issues without being seen and ruining the atmosphere

dark blue is night color. yellow is great for sand. it stands to reason that ninjas used those. we use them today in camouflage. also you should try to have a cover identity when approaching enemy camp and working infiltration or sabotage and not only rely on "how not to be seen" ( or shrubbery tactic)...
It must've been fascinating being the first audience to witness the all black wearing stage hands you knew since forever being ignorable scenery brandish a sword and dramatically "assassinate" the main character. It was probably incredibly groundbreaking and shocking.

I think a game depicting a historical ninja in an open world rpg format would be quite exciting. Especially, with the tension of trying not to get caught, whilst spying and other jobs.

A game where you CAN get accepted and be trained an actual ninja, and have to side with either ninja clan or go completly rogue. You got to participate in a myriad of historical events of feudal Japan, and discover documents and bits of information that could very well fill in not so explained blanks in history, and you do these ninja missions and get more honor and renown with the clan, to the point where you could very well start your own ninja clan!

Wouldn't work. The game where you play as a ninja can't be an open world RPG because ninjas have, you know, specific tasks in specific places. And those tasks probably involve an awful lot of waiting, looking for opportunities, talking and doing things to maintain your disguise. You can't just go wherever you want and do whatever stupid fetch quests you want, it's not how it works in real life. That's why every protagonist in every open world RPG ever is either an outlaw or The Chosen One. Or a witcher, I guess.
The only way that might work is to make a strategy game. Like, a very slow-paced, probably turn-based, with lots of dialogue, complex game mechanics revolving around gathering information and sabotaging stuff while managing your limited resourses and maintaining disguise.
Not only is black more expensive, it's also less stealthy. Dark blue works much better for stealth than black.

***** because black absorbs too much light, and it will look wrong. You need colors that are close to what is found in nature. Although the actual color doesn't matter much in the darkness of night, but something that is clearly brighter or less bright will stand out.

People in Japan did cosplay before it was cool.
One of the things I enjoy on a day to day basis here in Japan is the old ninja dramas on TV, many of which feature ninja wearing very ordinary clothing and effectively blending in as traveling merchants and scullery maids. usually in these shows the only time you see assassins wearing dark clothing and masks, they're usually samurai out for a dishonorable night raid where they're upstanding citizens who don't want to be recognized.
In Akira Kurosawa's film "Kagemusha" (the shadow warrior), there's good example of actual ninja/shinobi: they're the three travelling merchants/peasants who are spying on the Takeda clan from time to time. They look like ordinary, lowly civilians. And that's just all they needed to blend in and be able to do their work effectively.
Do you have a name for these shows? Cuz I'm sure most of the western stereotype on Ninjas actually came from Japanese themselves, i'm surprised that Japan do have accurate depiction of ninjas

Indeed. Ninja were really just "spy samurai" or "spy bushi" if you prefer. Another example besides Hanzo, is Yagyu Munenori. He was a warrior retainer on the battlefield who served the eastern side leading to Tokugawa's victory AND later the head of the Shogun's secret service. If "secret service" doesn't describe "ninja" in this case, than I don't know what does.
Munenori Yagyu was also a renowned kenjutsu master if i remember correctly.
So a ninja's disguise is basically the same as criminals or spies who are disguising as maintenance workers or pizza delivery guys?

Honor is completely irrelevant to the ninjas way, the main motivation of a ninja is money, the pleasure of killing, and revenge.

As it happens I have had some personal experience with Ninja. About twenty years ago my wife woke me up because she heard someone trying to come in our bedroom window. It was a guy dressed up in an all black ninja outfit. I think he was a fake. We lived on Russian Hill in San Francisco which is far from Japan town but contiguous with China town. I think he was really Chinese.
In any case I pulled my revolver and told him I was coming around the corner shooting. He scooted over the fence just like it was 'The Warped Wall'.

Many pirates were actually trained sailors who could certainly fight.
Everybody knows that pirates always wear a woodleg and a hookhand and an eyepatch so they are limited in sight and movement but they can catch weapons with they hooks. And the Parrots from the pirates can distract the ninja :/
Since ninjas were mostly part of the samurai class, and the samurai armies were all well trained and in large numbers. I would bet all my money on ninjas. Unless you took a few unexperienced ashigaru who acted as ninjas against a group of well equipped experienced pirates, I think pirates. But all and all, ninjas were soldiers, and very brutal at that. Pirates were "sea-thieves". So ninjas win.

scholagladiatoria brought me here. Great videos I really enjoy the fact based rational presentation. As a student of Ninjutsu I can say this video is almost 100% what I was taught by my Sensei. It's even incredibly blurry what Ninjutsu is, even as a student of Ninjutsu. Most of all I can say it's a way of thinking, incorporating whatever works. There are no rules, in sparring we are encouraged to improvise and to "cheat". At least I know what I have learned in training isn't complete bunk, I know that training in Ninjutsu can be a very sketchy and inconsistent martial art depending on who is doing the teaching. Even when the classes make trips to Japan to meet with fellow Japanese students it's almost completely unknown what is or isn't original teaching vs modern fiction. Not to mention that we also learn basics in Kendo, Jujitsu, and Karate, which convolutes things even more. At least it's good fun.

Excellent video, really summarizes better than anyone else I've seen on youtube, how the ninja probably existed, what they looked like, what they used, and why. Personally, I think this realistic, down to earth view of them is far more interesting than what Hollywood gives us.

Please investigate the costumes used by bunraku puppeteers. These were used to make puppeteers invisible, and this technique was adopted for popular theater, as audiences were accustomed to thinking of them as invisible. Thank you for referring to this in the last part of the video.

I believe the common conception is that scythes and nunchaku were originally farming tools. And weaponless farmers trained to use them as weapons for when the need arose. Not sure how historically accurate that is, but they certainly like teaching it at certain martial arts dojos.
+TheRainSnake Scythes were used to reap fields. Flails were commonly used in ancient times to beat the grain out of it's envelope.
+TheRainSnake scythes, nunchaku are farming tools. but a skilled assassin could use these as weapons or design weapons to look like these if he wanted to disguise as a farmer; or a strait bladed sword to mingle with other carpentry tools if he posed as a carpenter on a castle or temple construction site. or simply an over the top expensive katana if he posed as a noble traveler (exposure and exageration can also be used as camouflage). think the most simple and obvious way to aproach your target, then the most direct and swift way to its throat and the fastest and unsuspicious way to get out.... put it into practice and, booom : youre a ninja!

From my knowledge, other reasons for ninja wearing the specific colors as was mentioned also had to do with blending into the environment; earth colors being really decent camouflage in more wooded areas and dark blue blending in with the night a better as true black isn't actually seen. Demonic masks could also be used for helping their more "evil" reputations

Your opinion about the interpretation of the syllable „ja“ in Ninja would be interesting for me. I remember „the man of books“ meaning „a man using the scrolls (of the Ninja)“.
There is an theory that sai, kama or chopsticks are weapons that correspond with the infiltration and camouflage methods as they resemble or simply are commonly used tools. A sai resembles a seeding tool and a kama is kind of a sickle to gather the crop. It was not strange to see a person dressed up like a peasant having a kama under his/her belt.

Real ninja vs fantasy ninja
Fantasy ninja is instantly recognized, caught, and arrested. Real ninja is never suspected and takes out his/her target. Real 1, fantasy 0.
As practitioner of Bujinkan Ninjutsu, I have to say: some of the things you mention are due to years of misdirection and misinformation. This was used as a social weapon. Clans would let accusations and speculation blow out of proportion to what they are today. This is where ninja were believed to be tengu then and only legends now.
In kabuki, stage hands wore dark suits which changed sets on stage and and the audience were conditioned to ignore them. When the story needed a person to appear out of no where, an actor would dress as stage hand and attack the actors as a surprise to the audience. Ninja of any era wear common clothing to blend in crowds only at night would there be a need for dark clothing.
We were trained in shuriken, however, they were not star shaped (san shuriken), the bo shuriken was like a small single blade with a weighted blunt end. Unlike normal throwing knives which spin quickly; we had to learn the correct technique so the blade only fliped every 3 ft.
I'm glad you brought up Hanzo. I also learned about him, while he was undefeated in battle, he was finally killed by opposing samurai because he was caught in a bear trap. Hanzo's son heard of his father's death and swore revenge. Hanzo's son and fellow Iga clansmen harassed the local lord's guards at night and spread rumors about Hanzo's ghost returning to get revenge.

Also, little known fact, even though the katana is the sharpest object in the universe and can cut other swords clean in half a ninja sword can actually stop it. What follows after such clash is best described as a singularity of unimaginable destruction, only stoppable by the power of concentrated thought and friendship. (*based on common knowledge of anim... ehm, I mean historically acurate Japanese culture)

you insinuate that samurai and ninja were hard to distinguish. WRONG. Hattori Hanzo was an anomaly. he happened to be a samurai from Iga, home to one of the most famous ninja clans. MOST samurai had no connections to ninja like Hanzo. there WAS a clear distinction between samurai and ninja and Hanzo was one of the very RARE exceptions because he happened to be from Iga.
most ninjas were used as spies. they didn't go around in the ninja suit. they just went around in ordinary clothes to gather intel. the suit is real, but it was only used on rare occasions when ninjas had infiltration, sabotage or assassination missions.
+SVanTha Sorry but you are wrong. Most of what we today call "ninjas" would have considering them selves Samurai or Jizamurai. Poor and rural perhaps (not all samurai were rich nobles) and during a certain time ruled by their own Ikki and not a Shogu, but still Bushi. Many traditional Bujutsu schools has a part that is to be considered Ninjutsu in them even though few were as specialized as the families in Iga and Koga became. Most of the contracts that we know that the families from Iga had was castle infiltration (get in, light the place up, kill as many as you can, create chaos and open the gates for the regular troops) and not spying or assassination even though intelligence gathering certainly was part of the operation.
The best way to see a Ninja is to see it as a Samurai with a special skill-set and a special mindset. Hattori Hanzo as a person was surely rare but his role as a Samurai from Iga with skills in unconventional warfare/ninjutsu was not rare among the warriors from Iga and Koga (they were in fact known for it). So yes it would be hard to distinguish between a Samurai with special knowledge and a Samurai without special knowledge, especially when the former do what it can to confuse and to blend in and both consider themselves Bushi.
sirseigan LOL. ninjas were farmers by day. farming was their main occupation while they learned ninjutsu in secrecy. that's why the term is ninja "village". the Iga ninjas were moved to Edo because Nobunaga had destroyed their lands and villages. even in Edo, they were employed as a security and espionage force, NOT as samurai.
samurais were public officials. they filled all the positions of governance and were forbidden to farm or be occupied in other professions. samurai is a class, a class that does not farm. ninjas were from the peasant class, had villages and farmed. claiming "most" were samurai is hilarious.

Not quite. There is not one single historical account of ninja not being samurai. Of course that does not mean that there weren't, but there is no evidence at all for it. So either they never were commoners (like farmers) or they were real exceptions. Virtually every piece of real evidence there is, points out that ninja were actually samurai.
Farmers had no time to learn to be a ninja nor did they have the time to BE a ninja. They worked a life of hardship and had very little spare time in which they could train or go on a mission. They definitely couldn't afford to stay away from their crops for more than a day, even occasionally.
And yes, there were samurai-farmers, as SirSeigan correctly stated. These were - among other things - called "jizamurai", as he stated correctly.
Before replying and laughing at me too (which doesn't bother me personally, but it would really help you to rethink your position), please look up "jizamurai". Jizamurai were basically "farmers turned into samurai" for one reason or another. Either because the town needed a samurai and there wasn't one available, or because he was drafted to fight in a battle and he was "rewarded" by being elevated into the rank of a samurai.

That does only partially contradict what I said. Yes, there are not a lot of historical accounts. But those that are available do not confirm the idea that "ninja were recruited from the lower class".

Okay so I watched the video and I understand that there's a lot of mixed information out there but I just want to also mentioned that I've also read in the past that the ninja might have worn navy blue rather then black and if so I've also heard that navy blue might have made the ninja harder to spot at night while black might be easier to spot during the night and why is that?

it has to do with how it reflects moon light. your surroundings reflect light since they aren't black. if you wear all black then you will be a void and easy to spot by a sentry. dark navy blue reflects some light but not too much in the same way a black panther does. also there's the cost.
So I guess what your saying is that when the moonlight hits the clothing it reflects as little light on the clothing as possible and as well it's like the Ninja became a chamillion during the night by not being detected at all I'll probably need to do some research of it on the web so I can understand it better.
Sean exactly. The absence of light is just as obvious as the prescience. Its the balance struck between the two that decides, but to be honost I think the colors worn changed with the seasons and environment.
So I guess I got the camouflage concept right but how on earth am I going to find more detailed information on this topic and other stuff on the ninja the main reason that I want to know is so that I can write a fictional novel by portraying the ninja or shinobi in a more realistic way or would I most likely have to rent books at the library instead if it's truly difficult to research the factual info online and it's the same with the Samurai but not as tough to research up but still it's as difficult as it would be when it comes to the ninja anyways the more you tell me the better!
Sean truthfully, alot of what you hear about the methods is crap. The training and history is for the most part good but the methods they used were by large not nearly as complex as people think. Ninja were spies and when needed assassins. If dressing as a gardener got them closer to the target then they did that. If the target frequented a brothel then a kunoichi was sent in. Think of it like this. The ninjas goal is to make you think they are the least likely to be a ninja. Coincidently, its the exact same with the CIA.

Hi Metatron. I studied Matsumura Sato (Okinawa Village Style Karate) for over a decade as a child and I was told that the weapons used we originally farming tools as Okinawans were not allowed formal weapons by the emperor. Would this be true?

There is hardly any certainty about that. Historians still fight about the origins of the Okinawan "weapons".

I read something recently that as a rule the common dress of the ninja was farm-wear, the uniform they did use was blue because it blended with shadows better then black that would stand out.

Hmmm, thus it would make sense to say that "Ninja" was not a specific type of warrior / person but just the denomination for a mission, just like a spy doesn't need to be a professional 007 but it could for instance be a member of a Navy SEAL send on recon mission as well as a simple person told to watch over somebody / something.
Makes a lot of sense as the problem that I have with "ninjas" as a defined type of warrior is that it makes no sense to have a specific type of warrior for hire when any lord could as well make use of any of his samurai at no cost with the added advantage that they were bound to him. And sending ninjas against samurai makes the least sense of all as it presupposes that samurai were stupid.

Yes, that seems close, but they did seem to have "tricks" which were really just guerrilla tactics that were communicated. Plus it seems like the "clan" concept came more from certain men just having the right characteristics to do the job. So, they get a job to do and then maybe focus on getting some trade craft.

But you are disregarding that any weapons were forbidden in public (or owned for that matter) at that time.
Only samurai were allowed to have a sword and even they weren't supposed to carry them oppenly in the public.
That is one reason why you can see them wearing clothes that cover them in most movies. The other is the dramatic effect. ;)
A samurai with a katana would had no problem against somebody with a sai at all.
A normal law enforcer wouldn't normaly act against a samurai. He is beneath the noble samurai.
But if it was the order of the shogun or even the emperor the samurai too would have to obey and not carry his sword in public.
Which happend of course, just remember the last samurai or other movies about that time ;)
But even in this scenario they wouldn't send a person with a sai against a samurai. That would have been foolish..
It is highly unlikely that a sai would have to be used against a katana. No reason for it to happen.

i thought i was clear on the fact that a sai isn't a weapon for war, but more or less just a disarming and detaining tool(often times on a long stick rather than just single hand)(probably called something else but idc)).
i wasn't trying to say a sai is better or even on par with a sword but to say it wouldn't have a chance is over board.
a sai and a short sword might even be a good combo, especially if your goal was to detain some one and not kill them.

But it is a little pointless because a) it is highly hypothetically (fight shouldn't really happen) and b) the very reason why the sai was used is that is a tool to disarm and detain and not to seriously harm.
If the katana hits you even once you are basically beaten. If the sai hits there is a good chance you won't be out of the fight right away.
The real reason why the katana should always win is, that unter the given conditions you are fighting with a defensive tool against a leathal weapon.
And it would be a samurai against a law enforcer. Which would be an equivalent to a black ops soldier fighting a patrolman. A little unfair I would say ;)
So yeah.. a sai can be a very good side weapon. We can see this in the modern use in martial arts.
But under the given circumstances the sai user has no chance against the katana user.
Nobody is saying the sai is inferior in general. you can block a katana decently with a sai and if you have a short sword as you suggested it would be pretty good against a katana in general. But it is a little pointless because it's about the historical use and not how you could use it ;)
+Aaron Light I remember sai being used as either A) disarming weapon or B) Weapon breaking tool, because the prongs could snap the blade in half but I'm a little skeptical about the last one.
Actually the sai must be much older than that, as it probalby originated from around India and spread over Indochina and China to the javaneese and finaly the japanese islands

Good video but your info on Okinawan weapons is incorrect. There are kata for at least sai and tonfa that I know of in Shorin Ryu.
I always thought that sai, tonfa, Kama, and bo were farming tools and that common people could carry because of their trade. Commoners could wield these tools as weapons to protect themselves corrupt samurai. I do understand that modern weapons used in today's martial arts practice have evolved from 400 years ago.

+ wearing pitchblack in the night is actually not the best colour to not be seen. The pitchblack is so dark that it gives away a contrast against the dark sky. Because a completely pitchblack night is pretty seldom. Most of the time you have a bit of light from stars, the moon and torches etc. So black is actually too dark most of the time.
dark blue, dark brown or a dark grey acomplishes "invisibility" far better.

Seen the video, I've got some questions, besides some other things...What are your sources, have you actually studied Kukishinden ryu, are you trying to imply that the Bujinkan invented the ninjato for their needs of training of kenjutsu and other arts ? Ninjato was straight so they could climb with it, fire poisonous needles and blinding powder from it's " saya "..... They didn't use " black karate gi's ", they used " shinobi shozoku " , which I know, isn't a lot different, but yeah, I'll second that, they didn't wear black all the time, and I'll second that they used other varieties of colors......let's say it like this, you get an assassination / spying " contract "....would you wear a hakama ? It would only limit your movement....which is not desirable as you will have to run, jump, climb, swim....have you a proof that Koga ryu and Iga ryu haven't existed ? How come they have the museums ? Nunchaku wasn't a part of the arsenal, true....but all the other were....shuko claws...daisho...bo...naginata...bisento...katana.....tanto...yari....kusarigama....kama....kusari-fundo ( and a shitload of other weapons )...but sai and tonfa were more of a " police " weapon...a sai wouldn't have a chance against a katana ? Sai was particularly used against katana, to trap the blade between it's horns.....but I like " jutte " more ...since no one asked an actual normal question.....answer some of the questions above, and I'll be pleased....
From my own study the Ninja was actually created as a "freedom warrior" so to speak. Sort of how the "maroons" were in the mountainous Hills of desolate Caribbean islands. But anyhow. Already enslaved in the fields under watch by Samurai warrior guards, if I may say so. Clothing and weapons were created from the enslaved field tools originally. Slave field clothing later on dyed, etc, so on and so forth. Remember grasshoppers a slave is as keen smart and wise as display in exposed by his Masters and Masters minions. 101 type-ish!!

Jason Armstrong Anime and manga represent everything in a...exaggerated way, even confusing and fake. In this case, Naruto (even though I like the show) really talked shit about ninjas. They make ninjas seem like good people who protect their homes for love and peace. Well, I can accept if you give supernatural powers to represent a ninja in a story for anime and manga, but you can't forget that a ninja is a mercenary and a killer, probably with no moral concepts.
